Discrimination in the Work *lace Discrimination can be expressed in many different ways, which no matter what can be very hurtful to a person. Discrimination itself means making a distinction in favor of or against, a person or thing based on the group, class, or category to which that person or thing belongs rather than on individual merit (definition , . -ne way of expressing discrimination is denying one a #ob because of his.her race or gender, or treating others unfairly because of his.her race or gender. Discrimination can lead to /uitting a #ob, and possibly doing something harmful to oneself or to the aggressor. Different ways of discrimination occurs very often in the workplace. 0irst, sex discrimination against women1 because men are the more dominant figure in today s society they receive more #obs, than do women. Secondly, there is age discrimination against both the young and old people in finding or having a #ob. 0inally, the disabled are sometimes not able to receive a #ob because of their disability. Discrimination will

probably always be in the workplace. !n the workplace it is much harder for women with the same education and experiences as men to earn the same #ob position. $ost of the time if a woman gets a #ob above a man, she will receive a much lower salary than the man would receive if he had the same #ob. Others argue that women should simply be given greater opportunity to work less than a full-time schedule since they are being paid wages equivalent to part-time work for full-time employment (Pay Equity, par 2 ! "omen are also faced with se#ual harassment, a form of se# discrimination in the workplace. 2n employer may hire a woman for a #ob that she is not capable of because the employer wants a woman to be there. This, often times may lead to sexual advances by the employer or co3workers. 2ll employers have a responsibility to treat and pay women, what they deserve with respect. 2ge discrimination is mainly aimed toward the older (&4 5 and younger (6(36) people in their early teens. $any 2mericans have been fired, forced into retirement, or turned down from a #ob due to their age. -lder age employers are discriminated against in the workplace because of appearance and their ability to do the work re/uired is believed to slow. +mployers are more likely to hire a person who is much younger and more attractive than an elderly person. 2lso, employers want to employ people who are able to do the work re/uired. This is another way in which older people are discriminated against even though they may be very capable to do the #ob. The 2ge Discrimination in +mployment 2ct (2D+2 allows workers to sue employers who they think fired them simply because they were too old (+xecutive summary, par ( . +mployers are also more likely to higher a significantly younger person because he.she will work for less money than an older person. +mployers discriminate against the young by not hiring them because of the stereotypes that society puts on youth because of a few irresponsible ones. 7ompanies discriminate against people with disabilities because they look at the disabled as if they cannot do anything to help themselves. +mployers deny work to the disabled because they believe the disable employee will be too slow, and other employees will bring trouble on the disable person. Society often believes that a disabled person will not be able to survive in a world, which can demand more than they can handle. !n 6'&( to end discrimination the +/ual +mployment -pportunity 7ommission (++-7 , based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin in employment and to promote programs to make e/ual employment opportunity a reality. The ++-7 has since become responsible for ending discrimination based on age or disability (+/ual +mployment. par6 . Discrimination, no matter what kind, is something that unfortunately, most people have to deal with at some point in their life. !f it s not sex, age, or a disability that is stopping an employer from hiring a person than it could be anything. !n any case it is still not fair to anyone trying to find a #ob. +veryone deserves an e/ual and fair opportunity at employment.

Discrimination can perhaps be better understood when analogi9ed with cancer. Discrimination, like cancer, kills humanity. Discrimination, like cancer, comes in many specific forms. 2nd each form of discrimination, like cancer, must be recogni9ed treated with specific and focused efforts. The purpose of this paper is to show that when we recogni9e the differences between racial and gender discrimination we validate history and are more aptly able to end the current oppression of racial minorities and women. Ten years ago one of the most exclusive golf and country clubs in 2merica, Shoal 7reek, admitted its first black member after controversy surrounding the club"s racial exclusionary policies nearly derailed the club"s coveted plans to host the championship tournament for the *rofessional :olf 2ssociation. Today, the ;ational 7ouncil for Women is waging a similar war on a different golf and country club. The ;ational 7ouncil for Women discovered that 2ugusta ;ational golf and country club, a privat ... <acial discrimination allows the police to profile and beat black and =atino men without fear of repercussions.

The rich old codgers at 2ugust ;ational have a constitutional right to assemble, regale each other with politically incorrect #okes and bitch about the money ;>2 players make. -ftentimes, that"s not the case when it comes to race. :ender discrimination prevents women from getting e/ual pay for e/ual work. >ut it"s not silly to discuss the best way to go about curing the different forms of discrimination. ;ow, ! don"t want to be misunderstood, ! don"t necessarily believe that racial discrimination is worse than gender discrimination. Women3only health spas populate our rich suburbs. Which brings me back to the ;ational 7ouncil for Women, they"re arguing that 2ugusta ;ational needs to open its membership to women primarily for the same reason it welcomed a black member, for the same reason golfers and ma#or corporations turned against exclusionary Shoal 7reek. !n attempting to gain support for their current endeavor the ;ational 7ouncil for Women asks, ?Do they (2ugusta ;ational have different standards for sexual discrimination versus racial discrimination@? ?Do the practices and policies on sex and race discrimination differ@ . !t"s the e/uivalent of *resident >ush sending ground troops to Dallas looking for -sama >in =aden. Thus far, The ;ational 7ouncil for Women is elated with its progress. !n addition, The ;ational -rgani9ation for Women also re/uested that 7>S refuse to televise the tournament at 2ugusta ;ational. We"re an overwhelmingly heterosexual society.
