Janet Leahr Collection Development Assignment FRIT 7134 Spring 2012 March 11, 2012

DESCRIPTION OF SITE AND LEARNERS Loganville Christian Academy is a college preparatory K-12 school. LCA was founded in 1998. LCA currently has 584 enrolled students. There are 269 male students and 314 female students. The total student body consists of 8% minority students and 92% non-minority students. LCA hosts 6 Korean exchange students every year. These students are included in the 8% minority figure. Our faculty is made up of 50 teachers of which 2 are of African American
descent and 1 of Jamaican American decent. The lower school (elementary) has 213 enrolled

students, and the upper school, (middle and high) have 317 total students. The schools media centers collection is comprised of approximately 15,000 cataloged items for both upper and lower school. 85 percent of the books in this collection were donated. The upper school media center, until the 2011/2012 school year, has not had a full time media specialist on staff. This collection analysis is the first of its kind at LCA.

The collection development focus for this project is on the economics curriculum. The economics curriculum is taught to high school seniors only. Our high school senior class consists of 29 students. Currently we have no data on free or subsidized lunch programs. After consulting with our school registrar, I found that we have no students currently on any such program. The LCA administration and technology team spent the 2010-2011 school year researching various technology initiatives. The goal of this research was to develop a comprehensive 5 year plan for technological initiatives for the entire LCA community. In the 2011-2012 school year, we added, 40 smart boards, a Mac Lab, and eBook offerings through the media center. In the 2012-2013 school year, we will launch our iLearn program. The iLearn program will require all upper school students to have a laptop device, and all text books will be available in electronic format. The schools major focus on technology was taken into consideration in this Collection Development Plan for the economics curriculum.

LCA is located in Loganville Georgia. Loganville is one of the fastest growing towns in Georgia. Loganville experienced a population growth of over 70 percent between 1990 and 2000. Loganville is located in Walton County. Walton County is 36 miles from Georgias capitol city Atlanta. Walton County is considered a rural county with a reported population of over 83,768. Walton County was named for George Walton who was a signer of the Declaration of Independence, and also a Governor of Georgia. Learner Analysis The Economics course is only offered to the twelfth grade students as a 1 semester course. 2 students are Korean exchange students. There are no remedial or special needs students included in this group. 32 twelfth grade students o 12 Boys (2 Korean) o 20 Girls

CURRICULUM REVIEW A few weeks ago our high school history/economics teacher brought his class into the media center and gave his students an assignment to find 3 items that are scarce in the world, and write a paragraph on each item as it relates to the economy, and common sense approaches to dealing with that scarcity in everyday life. I was challenged to find material in our collection to aid the students on the topic of economics. It was this encounter that prompted me to focus the collection analysis on the topic of economics, and more specifically, scarcity and its effects on our society and economy. I have included in this review the Georgia Public Schools Standards that are similar to the given assignment, as well as a one unit portion of the Loganville Christian Academy Economics Curriculum Guide. I have also included a specific activity from the Economic Theory Unit.

Accessibility of Additional Resources The Upper School Media Centers web site includes links to the local public libraries. We also provide a link to Galileo. Loganville Christian Academy does not have a subscription to Galileo.

COLLECTION REVIEW Direct Collection Examination I started this examination of the economics collection, by using the catalog to identify all titles that pertained to economics in the upper and lower school media centers, because we share a common database. Using a subject search of economics, I found 0 books, videos, or audio recordings returned. My next step was to search the database for books that had money in the subject. The money search returned 8 books of which 3 are included in this analysis. My next step

was to go to the stacks and pull the books that are in the dewy decima l category of the 330s for economics. This task yielded 6 titles. The results of the direct examination yielded 9 titles, the details are listed in the chart below.

Age Analysis The age analysis of the economics titles in our library was disappointing. The average age of our economics collection was 21 years old. This information indicates that the entire economics collection needs to be updated, and increased. Checklists and Catalogs I used the Billings High School Library catalog and found 173 titles in economics. None of those titles were in our catalog. I also searched Folletts list of economics titles, as well as titles that included the word money and found over 100. Several titles from Folletts Title Wave were included in the materials order/consideration file.. Circulation Study Upon evaluation of circulation queries, I found that only 4 books had been checked out. Of the 4 books, only 1 had been check out over the past 24 months. Database queries included the following key words; economics, economy, money. Teacher Interview I interviewed the Economics teacher to inquire about what supplementary materials are being utilized for this course. The teacher informed me that most research is conducted online, and students are charged with gathering information from these sources. Further inquiry also revealed that the class is not using a text book. The teacher feels that the text that was supplied is not useful, and he does not use it. He prefers to find information from various sources which include National Center on Education and the Economy www.ncee.org and Dave Ramseys Personal Finance www.daveramsey.com .

Multicultural and Fiction Resources Related to Economics Upon review of the collection, I found no titles that represented Economic-Fiction, or books that would be classified under Multicultural/Economics, ESOL, or Special Needs. These topics will be addressed in the materials order/consideration file. Summary The information gathered in this review included a teacher interview, a circulation study, an age analysis, a direct collection examination, and a comparison to checklists and catalogs. The data shows very clearly that the Economics collection at LCA is inadequate. These inadequacies include; the average age of the Economics collection is 21 years old, there are no fiction, or multicultural titles in the collection, the collection includes only 9 books. The books in the collection have not been circulated over the last 24 months. Economics is an area of the LCA collection that would benefit from a selection of new print materials, and the addition of eBooks audio books and educational DVDs on the topic.
