Grooves from A to Z
Grooves von A bis Z ist eine Zusammenstellung von
26 verschiedenen afrikanischen und lateinamerika-
nischen Rhythmen. Es war meine Absicht, die poly-
rhythmische und melodische Essenz dieser
Ethnorhythmen in mglichst komprimierter Form
darzustellen.
Das moderne Schlagzeug bietet hervorragende
Mglichkeiten, mehrere Rhythmen gleichzeitig zu
spielen. Persnlich finde ich es sehr spannend,
Perkussionsinstrumente zu imitieren und aus die-
sen Bausteinen komplexe Grooves zu entwickeln.
Das schult die Koordination und die Fhigkeit,
mehrere Rhythmen gleichzeitig zu hren und zu
spielen. Und man kommt auf andere Ideen ! Die
melodischen Mglichkeiten des Schlagzeugs sind
zugegebenermaen eingeschrnkt aber nicht gleich
null. Deshalb finde ich es wichtig, diesen Aspekt
des Instrumentes maximal auszunutzen. Grooves
von A bis Z gibt hierfr viele Beispiele.
Bei der Auswahl der Grooves bin ich so vorgegan-
gen, dass ich konsequent jedem Buchstaben des
Alphabetes einen Rhythmus zugeordnet habe. Das
erscheint zunchst etwas ungewhnlich, hat
jedoch den Vorteil, dass man auch einige recht
exotische Rhythmen bercksichtigt. Bei einigen
Buchstaben musste ich schon eine Weile suchen,
bis ich fndig wurde. Generell habe ich wenig
bekannte Ethnogrooves bevorzugt, weil mir dies
spannender erschien als auf Altbekanntes zurk-
kzugreifen. Man findet aber auch einige weit ver-
breitete Rhythmen wie Songo, Rumba und
Comparsa.
Diese hbsche kleine Sammlung interessanter
Grooves aus dem Bereich der Ethnorhythmen gibt
es als Gratis-download nur auf meiner Website. Ich
mchte jedoch in diesem Zusammenhang auf ein
Projekt hinweisen, fr das ich Untersttzung ben-
tige:
Unter der Rubrik Cabo Verde berichte ich ausfhr-
lich von meinen derzeitigen Aktivitten auf den
Kapverdischen Inseln, der erstmaligen
Dokumentation der verschiedenen Rhythmen in
Schrift, Bild und Ton. Das Projekt zieht jedoch
immer weitere Kreise und hat mittlerweile auch
Auswirkungen auf bildungspolitischer Ebene. Auf
den Kapverdischen Inseln gibt es so gut wie keinen
organisierten Musikunterricht. Das war in der
Vergangenheit auch nicht notwendig weil die
Menschen in Ermangelung anderer
Freizeitaktivitten eben gemeinsam musizierten.
Grooves from A to Z is a compilation of 26 afro-
and latinamerican rhythms. The intention was to
show the polyrhythmic and melodic essence of
these traditional rhythms in compressed and short
exercises.
The modern drumset is an excellent tool for play-
ing more than one rhythm simultaneously.
Personally, I like to imitate the rhythms of percus-
sion instruments on the drumset and to combine
these elements in complex grooves. This approach
is very beneficial for the drummers coordination
and his ability to hear and play different rhythms
at the same time. And it gives you fresh ideas !
The melodic possibilties on the drumset are limi-
ted but not non-existent. Therefore, I find it very
important to develop this aspect of drumming as
far as possible. Grooves from A to Z gives the
drummer many examples for this.
I choose the rhythms by assigning them to the let-
ters of the alphabet. At first glance, this appears
strange but the advantage is, that you have to
include also many not so well known rhythms. For
some letters, it was not at all easy to find an
interesting rhythm. As a rule, I preferred little
known rhythms. This appeared to me more intere-
sting then to fall back on standard rhythms.
Nevertheless, the drummer will also find some
popular rhythms like songo, rumba and comparsa.

In this context, I would like to talk about a pro-
ject, that needs your support.
Im currently involved in an important project on
the islands of Cape Vert. It is our aim to document
for the first time all the traditional rhythms of the
islands.
Meanwhile, this project has also stimulated discus-
sions about the situation of musical education on
the islands. In former times, people joined for
playing music together because there were little
other possibilities for recreational activities.
Nowadays, even in Cape Vert they have television
and computer games and the old ways of cultural
transmission seem to fade. The department of cul-
ture knows about this situation and is concerned,
too. However, Cape Vert is a poor country and
there is little money left for cultural and/or edu-
cational projects.
In So Filipe, the capital of the island of Fogo,
there is a public school with more than a thousand

Einzug gehalten und die traditionelle Form der
Weitergabe ihrer Musikkultur ist empfindlich
gestrt. Das ist auch den verantwortlichen Stellen
nicht entgangen und auch der Wille, daran etwas
zu ndern, ist vorhanden. Allein, es fehlt an den
finanziellen Mitteln.
Dringend bentigt werden Instrumente aller Art
und natrlich Geld. In So Filipe, der Hauptstadt
der Insel Fogo, gibt es ein groes Gymnasium mit
ber 1000 Schlern. Dort mchte ich zusammen
mit einheimischen Musikern eine Musikschule auf-
bauen, fr die ich hier um Untersttzung werbe.
