INTRODUCTION TO LAB-VOLT VIRTUAL LABORATORY (LVVL) SOFTWARE


TITLE: FAMILIARIZATION WITH THE METERING WINDOW AND THE DATA TABLE

INTRODUCTION This familiarization exercise consists of a step-by-step procedure that shows how to use the Lab-Volt computer-based Metering window and Data Table. The exercise can be performed using either the actual or virtual Lab-Volt lectromechanical !ystem " M!#. N "$: If you are performing the exercise using virtual EMS equipment, a Mobile Workstation must be installed in the Lab !olt !irtual Laboratory before any other equipment" -. Ma,e sure the &ower !upply is turned off and its voltage control ,nob is set to the . position. /onnect the &ower !upply to a three-phase power receptacle. N "$: When virtual EMS equipment is used, the #o$er Supply is automatically connected to a three phase po$er source $hen it is installed in the Mobile Workstation" 0. /onnect the L1+ &1+ * %2&3T of the Data (c)uisition %nterface "D(%# module to the -4 V-(/ output of the &ower !upply. 1n the &ower !upply' set the -4-V (/ power switch to the % "on# position. 2otice that the &1+ * 12 L D on the D(% module lights up to indicate that power is supplied to the module. 4. /onnect the e)uipment as shown in Fig4&$ 6-6. N "$: %he red terminals of inputs E& and I& on the '(I module correspond to the terminals marked $ith a plus )*+ sign in Figure 1-1.

The Metering window is now ready for measuring parameters in the electrical circuit of Fig4&$ 6-6. <. %n the Metering window' set the meter $ as a D/ voltmeter and meter %$ as a D/ ammeter. Turn on meter &=!$ and set it as an active power "&# meter. Turn off meters -' 0' %- and %0. *efer to the Shortcuts to Meter Settings help topic to learn how to change the meter settings.

6. %n the Metering window' set the continuous refresh mode by choosing the corresponding command in the View menu or by clic,ing the corresponding button in the toolbar. *efer to the !ie$ Menu -ommands help topic to obtain additional information on the manual and continuous refresh modes of the Metering window. Turn on the &ower !upply. 1bserve that meter $ displays the D/ source voltage' meter %$ displays the D/ current flowing in the circuit and meter &=!$ displays the active power dissipated in resistor *$. Decrease the value of resistor *$ by closing the other two resistor switches on the *esistive Load module. +hile doing this' observe that the values displayed by meters $' %$ and &=!$ change to reflect the decrease in value of resistor * $' because the meter displays are refreshed at regular time intervals when the continuous refresh mode is selected. >. %n the Metering window' select the manual refresh mode by choosing the corresponding command in the View menu or by clic,ing the corresponding button in the toolbar. 1n the *esistive Load module' set the resistance of resistor * $ to the value shown in Fig4&$ 6-6. +hile doing this' observe that the values indicated by meters $' %$ and &=!$ do not change to reflect the change in value of resistor *$' because the meter displays are not refreshed at regular time intervals when the manual refresh mode is selected. %n the Metering window' manually refresh the display by choosing the corresponding command in the View menu or clic,ing the corresponding button in the toolbar. 1bserve that this causes the meters to be refreshed so that the values indicated reflect the change in value of resistor *$. $.. Turn off the &ower !upply. *eplace the fixed-voltage D/ power source with a variable-voltage (/ power source as shown in Fig4&$ 6-87

The *ecord !ettings dialog box should be appear. This box allows you to select the parameters whose values are to be recorded in the Data Table window. The parameters measured by the meters that are turned on in the Metering window should be selected in the *ecord !ettings dialog box "a chec, mar, appears beside each parameter selected#. *efer to the Edit Menu -ommands and ,ption Menu -ommands help topics to obtain additional information about data recording and the *ecord !ettings dialog box. /lic, the 17 button in the *ecord !ettings dialog box. To do so' connect terminals 6 and 2 of the &ower !upply to the terminals labeled &*%M M1V * %2&3T $ and - on the &rime MoverDDynamometer respectively. -.. /onnect the T1*=3 and !& D 13T&3Ts of the &rime MoverDDynamometer to the T "tor)ue# and 2 "speed# (2(L18 %2&3Ts of the D(% module' respectively. /onnect the common terminal of the &rime MoverDDynamometer to the common terminal of the D(% module. (lso observe that meter 2 indicates the rotation speed of the &rime Mover and meter T indicates the tor)ue produced by the &rime Mover to overcome the tor)ue that opposes rotation "this tor)ue is mainly due to friction#. --. Turn off the &ower !upply. 1bserve that the tor)ue and speed indicated by meters T and 2 decreases to zero. %n the Metering window' select the manual refresh mode. /lose the Metering window.
