Composing A Message

Denisha Whiteside Kindergartens/General knowledge

Common Core Standards: Domain: Language and literacy development Strand/Topic: Listening and speaking/Expressive language Standard Statement: Describe familiar people, places, things and experiences Domain: Social-Emotional development Strand/Topic: Self/Peer interactions and relationships Standard Statement: Demonstrate socially competent behavior with peers Lesson Summary: This lesson will be implemented to teach children how to create a story, event or message. During this lesson plan the children will be using Apple iPads to use the Puppet Pals HD application. The Puppet Pals application is a live animation program. The application allows you to animate characters on the screen with your fingers or import pictures of your own. While animating characters with your fingers you narrate your voice into the microphone on the iPads. This application will allow the children to be creative, bring their imagination to life and use expressive language. Estimated Duration: This lesson plan will be a total of 100 minutes long. The activities will have two parts each being 50 minutes. Commentary: The first 50 minutes of part 1 will take place during free choice time and the second 50 minutes of part 2 will take place during group time. I anticipate that trying to keep all of the childrens interest and attention may be hard. I also think some children may have trouble creating the story, event or message using the application. To avoid these things from happening I will have a YouTube tutorial to how to use the application and I will also show the clips that other people created on YouTube.

Instructional Procedures: Day 1: For the first 10 minutes of free choice I will introduce the children will be asking the children open-

ended questions about what they know about composing messages and how using characters, puppets and pictures can be used to do so. The next 30 minutes of free choice I will give the children material such as fabric, paper, glue, scissors, tape, crayons, paint, paint brushes, markers, fire fighter props, doctor props, animal props, hats, boots, police officer props, etc. I will tell the children to dress up as people or animals or create something to wear of their choice for me to take pictures to upload onto the iPad to use when they compose a message using the Puppet Pals HD application. The last 10 minutes of free choice I will take pictures of the children and import them onto the iPads so they can use them as characters when they compose a message on the Puppet Pals HD application. Day 2: For the first 10 minutes of group time I will show the children the tutorial to how to use the Puppet Pals HD application and show them clips that other children have made. The next 30 minutes of group time I will let the children compose a message using the application by themselves or with a classmate. Then the last 10 minutes of group time the children with share their clip with the classroom.

Pre-Assessment: The pre-assessment will be asking the children open-ended questions about what they know about composing messages and how using characters, puppets and pictures can be used to do so. Scoring Guidelines: will be asking the children open-ended questions about what they know about composing messages and how using characters, puppets and pictures can be used to do so. There will be no scoring; the pre-assessment is just to see what the children know and to build on their prior knowledge. Post-Assessment: There will be no post-assessment only the final clip that the children create on the Puppet Pals HD application that will be shared with all the children during group time. Scoring Guidelines: There will be no scoring; the clip created on the Puppet Pals HD application is based on creativity and your own ideas and choices. As long as the child creates a clip to compose a message and use characters, puppets, pictures and talk to do so I will know they understand the lesson plan.

Differentiated Instructional Support To meet the needs of gifted or children who are struggling I can still have them compose a message but instead of using the application have them compose a message on the iPad or paper or draw a picture to represent the message.

Extension For my extension I will create a power point using Google presentation to provide more information on the standards I used in this lesson plan. You can see the Google presentation in my 14/15 assignment. Homework Options and Home Connections The age group my lesson plan is for are too young so instead I will encourage parents to be involved. To get parents involved I will encourage them to compose messages with their child rather its telling a story, reading a book, making a grocery list, writing a letter or card. All the things will help their child develop language and literacy skills and let them be creative.

Interdisciplinary Connections One other content area that the lesson plan can be integrated with is having the children draw or paint picture(s) to compose a message. Another content area that the lesson plan can be integrated with is having the children write a letter, story or card to compose a message. Both of these ideas tie back to letting the children be creative and learning language and literacy skills. Materials and Resources:
