&omputer and 'utomation (esearch )nstitute *ungarian 'cademy of +ciences

The +ystems and &ontrol (esearch aboratory is the leading research center in *ungary in the field of mathematical systems and control theory that represents the *ungarian basic and applied research in the field being on the international level. 1enerally spea$ing, systems and control theory deals with the problems of dynamic modelling, analysis, control and diagnosis of engineering systems constructed by developing technologies, as well as other systems of natural sciences. This discipline is one of the most important fields and has received the most appreciation since the foundation of the )nstitute, being researched by various groups over different periods. 2otivated by the above, our 3mission statement4 is as follows, The members of the Laboratory contribute to the advancement of systems and control theory and to the application of the accumulated knowledge in the field by outstanding basic research that is on the international level. The aboratory has cooperated in widescale international research, and has had well established Hungarian industrial relationships for years. )ts members teach of the latest research results in $ey fields of university education, and promote technology transfer.

Research profile of the Laboratory

Modelling and system identification The class of bounded analytical functions, and the rational functions therein, defined on the complex unit disc play an important role in modelling of linear time-invariant systems. New results have been obtained in the field of (partial) minimal realizations and controller design in both the continuous and discrete time case. inear parameter-varying ( !") models that are based on linear techni#ues have been proposed for solving nonlinear problems by showing that the information about the parametric uncertainty can be embedded into the model and thus can be ta$en into account when designing controllers. %urther results have been obtained in developing the geometrical theory of !" and bilinear systems. Robust and nonlinear control theory The classical notions of system theory, li$e controllability and observability, have been investigated for time-varying nonlinear systems enabling a model with linear structure, for example for affine linear time or parameter-varying ( T)- !") systems with a given structure. The theoretical and practical problems related to the inversion of the system play a central role in the design of nonlinear controllers. The possibilities of (#) !" modelling have been investigated and they have been successfully applied for practical problems. ' weighting strategy has been developed in the *.-/, combined *0-*. and in the loop transfer design methods for ta$ing into account performance criteria and parametric uncertainties. %or the *.-/ design case it has been shown that the performance properties of the controller can be improved by ta$ing into account the real parametric uncertainty, while the conservativity of the control will decrease as compared to that of other robust controllers. 'n efficient reduction method has been proposed for decreasing the order of the obtained high order controller. Modelling and control of process systems ' synergetic grey-box approach is applied to the diagnosis and control of process systems that are $nown to be nonlinear and difficult to handle. This approach integrates the tools and techni#ues of thermodynamics, mechanics, and other engineering disciplines with systems and control theory. The basis of the approach is process modelling and model analysis based on first engineering principles. The following research directions are followed, <. !hysical modelling for control, multi-scale modellingH model simplification-reduction, minimal modelsH model verification and validationH state and parameter estimation. 0. 'nalysis and control of nonlinear systems with smooth nonlinearities, robust and adaptive controller designH model analysis and controller design based on #uasi-polynomial representation. I. ?iagnosis and control of discrete event and hybrid systems based on heterogeneous information sourcesH model-based verification of safety procedures in hybrid systemsH supervisory control. 'pplication area, energy-related, process, bio-medical and #uantum systems.

$daptive and robust identification and control Novel methods have been developed to compute the best achievable controller with the highest #uality for linear systems ta$ing into account both the system dynamics and the constraints. %or this purpose the notion of the optimality limit has been introduced and its detailed analysis has been performed. The conflicting paradigm of robustness and optimality in control design can be formulated in the form of a *eisenberg product, well $nown from theoretical physics. Signals and systems theory )n recent years we have achieved results in the field of biomedical applications. )n cooperation with !rof. 56nos N7meth at the 8pthalmological &linic of the +emmelweis 9niversity, we investigated the problems of tear-film dynamics, the results of which have been published in the prestigious :ournal Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science (impact factor ;.<=). 't present, we are investigating high precision methods for reconstructing the surface of the cornea in the framewor$ of a pro:ect financed by the *ungarian >ureau for Technological ?evelopment together with the 8phthalmological &linic of +emmelweis 9niversity and the ?epartment of Numerical 'nalysis of the orand @otvos +cience 9niversity where our previous results on signals and systems theory are successfully applied. Fault tolerant and embedded systems with high reliability 8ur ma:or application area of high reliability systems consists of vehicle and traffic control systems. %or road vehicles our activity is carried on in the framewor$ of the Advanced Vehicles and Vehicle rol "nowledge ont! enter at the >udapest 9niversity of

Technology and @conomics. )n the area of aircraft we collaborate with the ?epartment of 'erospace and 'eronautics at the 9niversity of 2innesota, 9+' and with the &. +. ?raper aboratory, &ambridge, 2', 9+'. !ndustrial application of modern control methods 8ne of the most important successes of our aboratory is the 9niversal Test +ystem (9T+), implemented in the (eactor !rotection +ystem of the #a$s %uclear #ower #lant in Hungary. )n the framewor$ of the lifespan extension pro:ect the problems of reconstruction of the control system in the plant have been raised. Therefore, we have started a global review of the controllers in the primary circuit and its identification. 's a first step the pressure controller of the primary circuit has been redesigned, implemented and installed on three units of the plant that has reduced the pressure variations by an order of magnitude, and has allowed the increase of the electrical power of the units by <-0 A.
