Program Overview

The University of Florida, College of Veterinary Medicine, and the Maples Center for Forensic Medicine, in partnership with the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), offers an online 5-course, 15-credit graduate certicate program in Veterinary Forensic Sciences. The only graduate certicate of its kind, this program emphasizes the application of forensic science and medicine to veterinary medicine and animal-related crimes, including animal cruelty cases. Participants will gain the forensic expertise necessary to help solve cases involving animal cruelty and to better ensure justice for animals through the legal system.

Courses
Animal Crime Scene Processing (3 credits) Understand the procedures and protocols used when processing an animal crime scene and various types of associated evidence. Scientic and Legal Principles of Forensic Evidence (3 credits) Learn the relevant aspects of the principles of evidence in a legal investigation including the fundamental concepts of evidence, burden and standard of proof, judge and jury, types of evidence, witnesses, and degrees of certainty. Cruelty to Animals and Interpersonal Violence (3 credits) Understand the relationship between cruelty to animals and interpersonal violence. Discover partnerships and intervention programs involving humane societies, social service providers, veterinarians, and the legal system. Veterinary Forensic Pathology (3 credits) Interpret injury patterns and cause, manner, and mechanism of death. Learn about the pathological documentation required for crimes involving animals and about interacting with the legal community. Forensic Entomology (3 credits) Learn proper techniques for the documentation, collection, and preservation of entomological evidence, as well as how to calculate a minimum postmortem interval from entomological evidence.
