Foreword
This book is a declaration to the authenticity of distance attunements. am a li!ing e"ample of such a process being a #eiki $aster of %sui #eiki #yoho& 'ayashi& and (aruni (i. find myself in this place through no actual physical intent on my part& but through a series of life changes that propelled me to this certainty. n $ay )*** my sister contracted bacterial meningitis and +as not e"pected to pull through. She +as in hospital for o!er , months +ith her head packed in ice under a fan to try to halt the spread of the disease. At the same time had lost touch +ith an old friend +ho had mo!ed to -rance some years pre!iously and +as in!ol!ed in something called #eiki. n desperation sent an email to her +ith the ne+s& and recei!ed an immediate reply that #eiki +as being sent by herself& her husband and friends. This +as follo+ed up by numerous emails from the .istant 'ealing Net+ork +ith +ords of comfort / beaming healing to my sister. -rom that day a change came o!er my sister and she appeared to rela" and be free of torment for the first time. Subse0uently& +as attuned to #eiki one and t+o by distance& so that could focus this +onderful energy and gi!e hands on healing direct. This channeling of e"traordinary energy +as felt as a physical reality by my sister and she has reco!ered to lead an almost normal life& albeit +ithout balance or hearing. and physical disabilities as part of his 4ob. $ost of my family ha!e been attuned and the effect of #eiki spreads and gro+s like a luscious plant. Susan and (aren ha!e in fact ne!er met physically but through their #eiki On group ha!e managed to reach out and touch thousands of people5s li!es in a dynamic and positi!e manner +hich is irrefutable. ntroduction
The A!sui"Twoey@
On September 33& 3888& the duo of (aren Smith of -rance and her student and friend& Susan 1osco of the %nited States& began teaching an alternati!e healing method called 9#eiki9 to a 0uickly gro+ing class of students. 'o+ did they coordinate their teaching from t+o different continents: ;ia the nternet. 1elo+ is the story of ho+ t+o like/ minded +omen found each other& and came to build a successful class in alternati!e healing by spanning the globe electronically.

t +as <uly 3888& and the sub4ect being discussed on the *3Angels nternet discussion group +as #eiki. So no+ you ask& 96hat is #eiki:9 #eiki is a system of healing +hich uses %ni!ersal Energy to heal and energi=e our bodies on physical& emotional& mental and spiritual le!els. This healing therapy +as de!ised in the early 38**=s by a <apanese man by the name of $ikao %sui. Practitioners of the system are >attuned= to channel a higher fre0uency energy to their recipients to assist them in healing themsel!es and others. %sui is thought to ha!e called his healing system >%sui teate=. 6e understand that it +as his student 7hu4iro 'ayashi +ho ga!e the name >#eiki= to the system. On a mid summer e!ening se!eral years ago& Susan 1osco found herself lamenting to the other group members that she +ould like to learn #eiki& but at the time& there +as no affordable local outlet for her to learn the methods pertaining to that energy therapy. She found her email posting ans+ered by (aren Smith& and before long a beautiful friendship and e"citing ne+ partnership had been born. Karen recalls: On $onday <uly 38& 3888 read this message on a spiritual chat list / 9 +ould lo!e to run out and begin in #eiki& but guess the cost and not kno+ing a nearby teacher is holding me back a bit.9 $y immediate thought +as& 9 could help her9. That>s ho+ met my dearest friend& and reiki sister Susan. This +as to be the first of many reiki distant attunements sent all around the +orld. t +as ob!ious from the discussions on other nternet reiki groups that 0uite a fe+ #eiki $asters ?as those +ho teach #eiki are usually kno+n@ +ere no+ attuning by distance& something pre!iously only gi!en hands/on. t +as a logical progression gi!en that +e kne+ healing +ould tra!el +ell through time and distance. disturbed to see that some masters +ere sending out attunements +ithout pro!iding the necessary teaching and preparation& conse0uently lea!ing students to do their o+n research. felt that this +as an irresponsible practice& so had to make certain that Susan +as +ell informed and prepared. Our attunement connection +as inspiring and encouraging& and left me thinking about the ne"t step. Should start a distant teaching group for #eiki: realised it +ould be a considerable commitment as had to make certain that the students recei!ed the best training could pro!ide by distance. $y +ork +ith the .istant 'ealing Net+ork ?+++.the/dhn.com@ pro!ed 4ust ho+ many people had faith in reiki& and benefited from recei!ing healing through distance. 6asn>t it no+ the time to make reiki freely a!ailable to enable more people to heal themsel!es and others: dithered. 1ut then one night recei!ed the push needed. One of the reiki attunement groups had mails from at least t+o people +ho had 4ust recei!ed a distant attunement but had no idea +hy they +ere feeling moody& depressed and tearful. No one had e"plained about the possibility of deto"ification +hich can occur after attunement& and +as !ery distressed for them. After +riting in +ith some ad!ice& immediately +ent to Aahoo groups and opened a reiki teaching group of my o+n. called it #eikiBOn because that is the trigger ad!ise all my students to use to open their reiki channels. 'a!ing taken the plunge no+ needed some friends to come in and support me. +ent back to the lo!ely >*3Angels= list +here had met Susan& and asked both her and the list o+ner $argie to 4oin me. They did& and soon others began to find us. Susan trained up to become a #eiki teacher herself and agreed to 4oin me as moderator of our group. This all happened in 3888 and our list has no+ gro+n to +ell o!er )C** students& all of +hom can recei!e a free attunement into both le!els 3 and ) %sui #eiki. #eiki On (aren Smith #eiki Teacher in the lineage of %sui/Sensei. Susan continues: One of the first things (aren and had to decide upon +as the format +e should teach in. There are many options +hen teaching #eiki& but +e decided that it +as less confusing for ne+comers to energy +ork& to teach a basic %sui type reiki& but to also gi!e a nod to the other energy techni0ues already in use by many +ho come to #eiki On to learn. t +ould ha!e been nice to point at a curriculum and say& 9This is ho+ and +hat %sui taught& so let>s learn it this +ay.9 1ut not much documentation of methodology is kno+n to e"ist from %sui himself. 6e began using Takata/based techni0ues of #eiki training simply because they +ere +ell kno+n at the time& since it +as Takata +ho brought the practice of #eiki to the +estern cultures !ia 'a+aii. 1ut +e soon came to reali=e that the most commonly accepted original %sui techni0ues seemed to come from 'ayashi& Takata>s teacher& +ho had trained under %sui for some time. 6e decided to focus on the

#eiki On 1ook 2 1osco& Smith

techni0ues +hich originated +ith %sui and 'ayashi& as they +ere the closest !erifiable techni0ues to the source material. 1ased on this methodology& +e began teaching and attuning to D%sui #eiki #yohoE& +hich may be translated as D%sui spiritual energy/based healing systemD. Fi!en that direction& #eiki On began to flourish under the lo!ing care and guidance of (aren and myself / 9the %sui/T+oey9& as +e came to be kno+n. After a +hile& +e began to hear the same lament from the students / 9 can learn le!els one and t+o #eiki here& but +hat about le!el three:9 So& +e decided to put together a le!el three training program as +ell& +hich +e call #O$P / #eiki On $asters Program. 6e started teaching this le!el for free in a group cyber/class setting& but it became clear that students benefited more from being taught this more intricate le!el of #eiki one/on/ one& +hich also meant a deeper commitment of time from both (aren and myself. 6e mo!ed to a modest fee/based system of one/on/one teaching !ia email for this le!el& and that seemed to address all needs of student and teacher in the best +ay possible. So no+ +e +ere able to co!er the training in the art of #eiki from pre/#eiki& up through le!el three& or 9master le!el9& as it is commonly called. At this point& students are certified to teach #eiki themsel!es. #eiki On Susan S. 1osco %sui lineage #GT

And so #eiki On +as concei!ed as& and continues to be& a discussion group dedicated to teaching le!els one and t+o of %sui #eiki& traditionally an energy therapy +hich is taught in three le!els of skill. Our goal +as to make our list members familiar +ith #eiki practice& +hile incorporating its use into their daily li!es& and their e"isting energy practices. #eiki On has no+ gro+n to include running healing groups both for people and for pets. 6e ha!e a reiki Share each +eek and +e also run e"periments to enhance reiki skills. Each month +e send out a #ei4u empo+erment to all members +ho +ish to recei!e. #ei4u is an energy transmission de!ised from original #eiki techni0ues. Ne+ members feel the +armth and friendliness of the group +hen they 4oin& and here must pay tribute to the +onderful caring #eikiBOnners +ho stay around to share their e"periences. To date& +e ha!e sent out more than H** indi!idual distant attunements. 6e no+ feel that the time is right to share e!erything +e ha!e learnt in order to encourage others do the same and spread the kno+ledge about this +onderful complementary healing therapy. 6e +ould like to +ish you +ell on your path to becoming a practitioner in the %sui System of 'ands On 'ealing kno+n as #eiki.

As an nternet dri!en discussion group& #eiki On is designed as the perfect forum for the practice and confirmation of reiki& and especially distance reiki +ork. A +ide audience of #eiki practitioners has molded #eiki On into a teaching machine +hich +e belie!e reflects an accurate emerging profile of the properties and characteristics of the practice of #eiki. Email& +ith its +orld+ide a!ailability and almost immediate nature& makes it possible to hold con!ersations amongst all list members from !arious backgrounds about the many aspects of reiki and #eiki practice. ndeed it has led to the forging of many long lasting friendships. t has also pro!ed to be a mar!elous +ay to learn +hilst in the rela"ed atmosphere of your o+n home. The !aried topics of con!ersation sho+ many areas of #eiki practice +hich continue to bring discussion and 0uestions. Sharing our kno+ledge and e"perience helps us all to learn ho+ +e may better use reiki to enrich both our li!es& and the li!es of others. A globally accessible discussion group such as #eiki On has its o+n set of characteristics and 0uirks. t=s important for members not to fly off the handle and make assumptions about the intent of a member +hose post +as not understood as +as intended. Language barriers and cultural differences make for discussions +hich can sometimes be !ie+ed as inflammatory& +hen in fact the best intentions +ere originally meant. 6e sometimes find oursel!es stepping in to alle!iate tensions bet+een misunderstood members +ho ha!e taken offense at a comment +hich +as not +ell understood. $ost of the time ho+e!er& members are 0uite respectful of one another and of list eti0uette. 1reaches of protocol are fe+ and far bet+een& +e>re happy to say. As a team& +e ha!e found that our partnership addresses all issues nicely& playing to the indi!idual strengths of both of us. 6e are proud to be amongst the members of our group. They are fine people.

The #Fla$or# o% Reiki at Reiki On

As for e"actly +hat type of #eiki system is taught or discussed at #eiki On& +e +elcome discussion of any types of #eiki that folks find themsel!es in!ol!ed in& but +e limit our teaching methods primarily to an %sui/based system of spiritual healing kno+n as 9%sui #eiki #yoho9 +hich uses both %sui>s teaching& and that of 'ayashi +ho +as both a student and collaborator of %sui>s methodology. Aou +ill see %sui>s original teachings referred to as 9%sui #eiki #yoho9& 9%sui .o9& 9%sui Teate9& and probably others. Aou +ill see 'ayashi>s teaching referred to as 9%sui #eiki #yoho9& 9%sui Shiki #yoho9& 9'ayashi #eiki #youhou (enkyu/kai9& and probably others. These are all terminologies inferred by those trying to study a !ery rubbery #eiki history. t>s dangerous to imply that one particular term is the only correct one. 6e simply do not kno+ the facts in this and many other historical #eiki matters due to a lack of documentation by original teachers of the system.

#eiki On 1ook 2 1osco& Smith

#eiki techni0ues and methods specific to %sui and 'ayashi are currently based on assumption and often conflicting information from !aried sources. The teaching of #eiki symbols is one e"ample of conflict of methodology brought about by differences in teaching methods. Some say that %sui added symbols to his original system shortly before taking 'ayashi as a student. Other sources claim that 'ayashi himself +orked together +ith %sui to incorporate the use of symbols in #eiki practice. t is said that %sui ad!ocated the use of the symbols in treatment& but it is not kno+n +hether %sui e!entually came to attune +ith these symbols or not& either by dra+ing or !isuali=ing them. t is thought at this time that the #ei4u process +as primarily used by %sui to open the attunee gradually to channel #eiki energy& +ithout the use of symbols. 6e kno+ more about 'ayashi>s practices. The attunement methods and #eiki practice +e teach at #eiki On are 'ayashi>s& and they do in!ol!e the placement of symbols +ithin the aura of the attunee. Since 'ayashi +orked together +ith %sui to de!elop #eiki into a more total/body healing therapy ?not 4ust the original spiritually based %sui practice@& +e feel confident that the system +e teach at #eiki On is one that +ould be sanctioned by %sui himself. 6e do not discount the use or !alue of #ei4u& but feel +e are doing a more complete ser!ice to our #Onners by attuning them +ith the symbols they +ill ultimately choose to use or not& and also offering #ei4u attunements& or empo+erments on a regular basis. 6e remain open to the discussion of +hat is currently termed 9e"tras9 in #eiki practice& as +ell. These might include #eiki +ork in!ol!ing crystals& color therapy& mantras& light therapy& essential oils& flo+er essences& and so forth. 6e find that many +ho come to #eiki ha!e an established background in other energy +ork& and +e feel it is in their best interest to help them incorporate the use of their e"isting energy practices +ith that of #eiki.

$any times in the history of #eiki On& +e ha!e been asked +hat reiki books +e +ould recommend for beginning and continuing study. This book +ill pro!ide an e"cellent starting point for any and all +ho +ish to kno+ more about #eiki& and its practice. t is a guideline of ho+ to bring reiki into your life& to ha!e at your disposal an energy therapy +hich may be channeled by anyone +ith the desire to pro!ide healing energy both to themsel!es and to others.

#eiki is an energy therapy +hich complements any and all con!entional and alternati!e medical treatments. #eiki brings healing energy to the sub4ect& clearing and repairing areas +here the energy body is blocked or damaged. This allo+s the sub4ect to heal on physical& mental& emotional and spiritual le!els. #eiki is not associated +ith any religion or belief system& but pro!ides the recipient +ith the type of healing +hich is for their highest good at that time. A built in function of this remarkable energy system is the ability to send healing energy any distance. This makes distant treatments not only possible but e!ery bit as effecti!e as hands/on treatments& and they may be performed +ith or +ithout the conscious attention of the recipient. t is the remote capability of #eiki +hich makes it a perfect healing tool for any and all students +ho sincerely ask to recei!e this healing ability& regardless of their location or pro"imity to the teacher. #eiki may be sent !ia distance +ith only the intent of the practitioner to do so& but it may also be sent distantly +ith the use of one of the #eiki symbols& the 'on Sha Ke Sho Nen. ?P'OTO 'E#E / smsending.4pg@ There are three practitioner>s symbols used in %sui/based #eiki& and one master le!el symbol. Each symbol focuses the reiki energy in a different manner. The first symbol& the 7ho (u #ei or po+er symbol& is thought to Apo+er on@ the reiki& boosting the amount of energy being sent. The second symbol& the Sei 'e (i or mentalGemotional symbol& focuses the energy on the mental and emotional le!els of the recipient>s psyche. The third practitioner>s symbol is the 'on Sha Ke Sho Nen& or time and distance symbol& +hich is used to transcend the boundaries of both time and distance. Once the student enters into training +ithin the third le!el& they are introduced and attuned to the master symbol as +ell / the .ai (o $yo. This symbol heals on soul le!els& blessing and healing +ith .i!ine po+er. $any traditional #eiki teachers teach that the symbols are to be kept secret. 'o+e!er& o!er the years this secrecy has caused a great deal of confusion and misrepresentation of the symbols. $ost contemporary #eiki teachers no+ contend that the symbols +ere meant to be kept sacred& and not necessarily secret. t is felt that respect and re!erence for the symbols +as the original intent of the founding master& $ikao %sui.

7hildren: 'ands on +ork especially& as children may not be ready to accept or understand the responsibility of asking permission before sending& or sending for someone else>s highest good. Perfect for their o+n self treating& reiki +ill help them o!ercome fears& sort out their emotions& heal their bruises& and soothe themsel!es +hen upset. They may also do great +ork +ith animals. Teach them the hand positions& to beam reiki and to send by intent like a prayer. 1eyond that& follo+ the aptitude and understanding of each indi!idual child. 6hen attuning children& it is best if a parent or close relati!e is present& and the attunement is gi!en hands/on. 6atch for signs of ha!ing 9had enough9 during attunement& as children may absorb energy 0uickly and fulfill their needs before the actual attunement procedure is finished. 1e certain that the child +ill ha!e someone to teach and guide them +ith their reiki once they ha!e been attuned. Seniors: People +ho are of a more ad!anced age may find #eiki the perfect complementary health and +ell/being therapy. The time and distance aspects of #eiki make sending to oneself easy / especially for hard to reach areas of the body. 'andicapped: #eiki is perfectly suited for the handicapped. Though emphasis is placed on using the hands and also on using special #eiki symbols& this energy system is guided primarily by intent& so that sending techni0ues may be adapted to include +hate!er facilities the practitioner does ha!e at their disposal. #eiki may be sent through any part of the body& including the eyes& feet& or aura. Animals: $any belie!e that our animal friends are already +ell !ersed +ith energy +ork. They absorb energy 0uickly and already seem to kno+ much about healing +ith energy. 1eha!ioral problems ha!e been resol!ed +hen some animals ha!e recei!ed attunement. .uring Pregnancy: There is much e!idence that recei!ing reiki during pregnancy can help +ith difficult or high risk pregnancies. $any ha!e re0uested and recei!ed reiki for themsel!es or others +ho +anted to assure that their baby/in/+aiting +as as +ell nurtured as possible +hile in the +omb& and that the +omb +as strong and healthy enough to support a risky pregnancy. One such method for sending to a child in the +omb is e"plained in the #eiki #ecipes section of this book. Those -acing Transition: Some practitioners report being dra+n to helping those transitioning through their physical death either because they are presented +ith situations for them to help +ith& or because their dream+ork has presented these types of opportunity. One !ery real case is recounted by a #eiki On member& 7hoon: Some time last year& a guy came to our reiki center and re0uested reiki healing for his mother +ho had been suffering for months on her dying bed& struggling

bet+een life and death. 'e had heard about #eiki from a friend and decided to gi!e it a try. 'e +ould do anything to relie!e his mother of her pains and to cure her. She +as in a coma and +as suffering from breast cancer that had spread to other parts her body. On the same day& some of the #eiki masters +ent to the hospital to gi!e #eiki to this +oman. The reiki session +ent on for t+o days& and on the third day they recei!ed a phone call from a !ery angry guy. t +as the guy +ho re0uested #eiki for his mother. 'e said that his mother had passed a+ay the pre!ious night& and he blamed the #eiki masters for causing her death. 'e !o+ed to bring the center do+n. 'o+e!er the ne"t day he called again& this time +ith a tone of apology. 'e said that he dreamt of his mother& or rather his mum !isited him in a dream& and re0uested him to thank all the #eiki $asters +ho had gi!en her #eiki. She said in his dream that for a month she had being suffering in e"treme pain and there +as a +hite light she 4ust could not reach or connect to. There +as a barrier and she +as still bound to her physical body& as if some negati!e forces +ere holding her back. The pain +as unbearable to her. The reiki sessions helped her to be freed and be connected to the +hite light. She +as relie!ed of the pain and passed a+ay in peace. 'er son came back to the center +ith lots of gifts and +ords of thanks. Aou and : E!eryone can benefit both from being treated +ith reiki& and also from channeling the reiki energy. Treatments can correct energy imbalance in the energy body& and attunement can bring about permanent benefit& as the energy body is adapted to accept and channel reiki energy. 1oth applications can bring about healing on any of se!eral le!els of our li!es& and +e can bring this same healing to others by becoming reiki& and sharing it +ith others. $any people report the ability to direct energy to do healing& +hether they +ere attuned to it& born +ith it& or other+ise came to do healing +ork. 1ecoming attuned to reiki +ill pro!ide you +ith a slightly different +ay to use healing energy& in that you +ill be channeling an e"istent energy& instead of building up your o+n energies& and passing them on to others. There are se!eral benefits to healing using a channeled energy / you ne!er deplete your o+n energy +hen sending& you channel pure energy and not energy +hich is fla!ored +ith your thoughts and moods& and you yourself +ill recei!e healing as you channel the energy. #eiki +ill also protect you from taking on the characteristics of the dis/ease of the sub4ect being treated& as +ell.

There are many !ersions of the #eiki story depending on the source of the information you choose. The traditional history +hich most people are familiar +ith is that as told by 'a+ayo Takata& an 'a+aiian student of the %sui lineage& +ho introduced #eiki to the +estern +orld. This story tells of .r. %sui searching for the art of hands/on healing by learning 7hinese and Sanskrit to further his research& and tra!eling the +orld. 'e supposedly become a 7hristian as +ell as tra!eling to the %S to study in a +ell kno+n American uni!ersity. The story culminates +ith %sui reaching a satori/like state in +hich he recei!ed the ability to do #eiki& and reali=ed his abilities after performing four reiki 9miracles9. None of this information has e!er been confirmed& so +e think that $rs. Takata may ha!e crafted this story in the form of a parable to make #eiki more palatable in the %nited States& o+ing to a general political distrust bet+een the <apanese and the Americans at the time. Ongoing research is currently being carried out by !arious #eikis +ho talk to or correspond +ith %sui>s sur!i!ing students. %pdated information is al+ays coming through& although it is information +hich has many !ariations depending on its source.

The Origin o% Reiki $ikao %sui ?3LJI/38)J@: #eiki +as disco!ered by a <apanese 1uddhist monk named $ikao %sui sometime in the early )*th century. %sui +as born on 3Ith August 3LJI in the !illage of Taniai in the Aamagata district of Fifu prefecture& (yoto. 'is family +ere follo+ers of Tendai 1uddhism and %sui& kno+n to be a !ery spiritual person& practiced 1uddhism all of his life. 'e had a sister and one brother +ho became a practicing physician. n the early 38**>s& %sui married Sadako Su=uki and they +ent on to ha!e t+o children& a son and a daughter. As a part of his 1uddhist discipline& %sui regularly engaged in meditation. One particular meditation lasted )3 days& and took place on $ount (urama& a sacred place not far from (yoto. t +as as a result of this meditation that he had an enlightening e"perience and >realised= the po+er of the healing system that +as subse0uently called 9#eiki9. 'e found that he +as able to heal others +ithout depleting his o+n energy& something that +as !ery unusual. 'e started by using reiki on himself and his family& and after mo!ing to Tokyo he opened his healing society +hich he called the %sui #eiki #yoho Fakkai. 'e kept notes and +rote a small manual for his students +hich contained a healing guide& meditations& 6aka poetry and the #eiki precepts. #eiki +as taught in si" le!els& numbered in re!erse order so that J +as the lo+est& or 3st le!el as +e no+ kno+ it. Apparently 'ayashi left the Fakkai due to religious principles& as it seems that some of the members +ere nationalists and he himself +as a 7hristian. One +onders if this had any influence on the story that 'a+ayo Takata subse0uently promulgated about %sui being a 7hristian& +hich +as later pro!ed untrue. %nder 'ayashi>s guidance& students could pay for training or +ork in the clinic L hours each +eek gi!ing reiki. After t+o more years of commitment& +hich in!ol!ed assisting 'ayashi in the classroom& the student +ould be taught attunements and allo+ed to teach. 'e or she could copy all 'ayashi>s notes and those of %sui>s that 'ayashi had in his possession. 'ayashi is credited +ith de!ising the system most practitioners are initially taught today& +hich is healing by co!ering the +hole body using !arious hand positions. t is thought that this +as de!ised as a +ay to pro!ide a better flo+ of energy around and through the body& and also allo+ for additional practitioners to be +orking at one time. The method of attunement he used +as based on the #ei4u +hich +as %sui>s method of initiation& although there is some doubt that he +as actually taught this method. One assumes that he de!ised his o+n #ei4u method as he appears not to ha!e recei!ed #ei4u training from %sui. 'ayashi also appears to ha!e charged 0uite high fees for his #eiki teaching& and +orked on the theory that ser!ice +as only appreciated if it had been highly paid for. 'ayashi is said to ha!e been a !ery dedicated man& +ho only spent about fi!e hours each month teaching. The rest of his time +as spent in healing. There are !arious reports of his healings. One student& a man called $atsui& claims that he& his +ife and 'ayashi ga!e healing to a man close to death for nearly se!en hours& after +hich he reco!ered. 1efore his death 7hu4iro 'ayashi had attuned about 3H #eiki masters. One story states that he took his o+n life on $ay 3*th& 38C* using a ritual method call >Seppuku= ?a ritual slitting of the hara@& rather than be called into ser!ice in +artime. One of his master le!el students +as a +oman by the name of 'a+ayo Takata. 'a+ayo Takata ?38**/38L*@: 'a+ayo Takata +as born in .ecember 38** on the 'a+aiian sland of (auai& and as a girl& +orked in the sugar cane plantations. Takata took classes +ith 'ayashi and recei!ed her first le!el attunement from him& follo+ed shortly after by the second le!el. n the late 38,*=s she returned to 'a+aii& and not long after+ards& .r. She conse0uently set up a clinic on the island and began training students herself into the first and second le!els of #eiki. t +asn>t until the early 38H*=s that she taught the master le!el& setting a charge of M3*&*** for the training. Those of us that learnt #eiki prior to 388H& +ere gi!en the #eiki history that 'a+ayo Takata taught. nformation such as %sui being a practicing 7hristian and attending a uni!ersity in the %nited States pro!ed to be myths that +e assume she crafted to make a <apanese healing system more palatable to the %S during and 4ust after 66 . Takata is kno+n to ha!e attuned t+enty/t+o #eiki masters before her death in 38L*& and is supposed to ha!e made them all promise to preser!e the %sui system and teach e"actly as she taught& +ith the same fee structure. .ue to her 'a+aiian upbringing she made the #eiki history more of a parable and is thought to ha!e altered some of the teachings she recei!ed from .r. 'ayashi. She ga!e e!eryone to belie!e that #eiki had died out in <apan due to <apanese #eiki teachers becoming casualties of the +ar& and that she +as the only #eiki master left in the +orld. 1ut #eiki practice has in fact continued in <apan in the same organi=ation started by .r. %sui / the A%sui #eiki #yoho Fakkai@/ +hich still operates in Tokyo to this day. 'o+e!er& for +hate!er reasons Takata made these alterations& it doesn>t change the fact that her method of teaching had been tried and trusted for many years& and +hile many of us ha!e re!erted to 'ayashi>s methods& +e ha!e e!ery reason to be !ery grateful to $rs. Takata for her +ork. After her death& one of her t+enty/t+o masters& ris shikuro decided to ignore the instructions gi!en by Takata to follo+ a high fee based teaching system& and follo+ed her o+n path. She charged a far more moderate fee and sometimes e!en no fee at all. n this present day there are certainly not many masters charging the M3*&*** fee for Shinpiden. Since 'a+ayo Takata died there ha!e been !arious disputes about the sudden emergence of the title 9Frandmaster9 in connection +ith the %sui lineage. 6e no+ kno+ there isn>t and ne!er +as any such formal title& but it +as adopted by Takata>s granddaughter Phyllis -urumoto after her grandmother>s death ?some say it +as besto+ed upon $rs. Takata by her o+n students@. Phyllis -urumoto has no+ adopted the title of Lineage 1earer. 7ontemporary #eiki: n more recent history& other #eiki organi=ations and modalities ha!e also sprung up. Some teachers claim to ha!e channeled energies +hich they then use in #eiki fashion& and !arious of them ha!e been trademarked in order to protect the e"actitudes of teaching that particular system. 1y +hate!er name ho+e!er& #eiki isn>t #eiki unless it is in the tradition and lineage of .r. $ikao %sui. t is up to the prospecti!e student to +ade through all these systems and decide for themsel!es +hich is right for them.

The ,e$els o% Reiki

An O!er!ie+ n the 6est +e normally teach reiki in three le!els& although in <apanese #eiki there +ere up to si" kno+n le!els and possibly more. Sho/den is comparable to our le!el 3& Oku/ den to le!el ) and Shinpi/den to le!el ,& or $asterGTeacher. $any 6estern teachers +ill no+ combine either ) or e!en all , le!els in one attunement. This system has its supporters& but +e feel that more is learnt and processed +hen a student +orks through the le!els at their o+n speed. This can take from se!eral +eeks to se!eral years. Let>s say you are interested in learning to channel reiki yourself. %sually you +ill start by reading a book or doing a search on the internet. Aou may e!en find your +ay to 4oining a group such as #eikiBOn +here you can ask all those 0uestions and meet like/ minded people +ho are also follo+ing a path of learning. Aour ne"t step +ill be to find a recommended teacher +ho +ill instruct you as to the implications of #eiki practice and attunement. Aou +ill be e"pected to pay a fee& +hich can !ary greatly from teacher to teacher& and you +ill be told +hen the ne"t class +ill be held. The course +ill last a day or possibly a +eekend& and at the end you should ha!e recei!ed an attunement& a reiki manual of instructions& a certificate and your reiki lineage& +hich sho+s ho+ you connect to the originator of the system. f attending class in person isn>t possible& then you can seek a teacher +illing to attune you remotely through the internet. Some +ill charge a fee& +hilst others +ill gi!e the attunement freely. 'o+e!er it is ad!isable to seek a teacher +illing to gi!e you the instruction you need. This& in our opinion& is of great importance. nternet discussion groups can be helpful because there you can ask 0uestions and recei!e ans+ers from a !ariety of e"perienced practitioners. $ost groups +ill pro!ide instruction in their files that can be do+nloaded into a manual. #eikiBOn& the group that +e run& demands that all students pass a small test of kno+ledge before any attunement is gi!en. 6e as the teachers& feel that +e ha!e a responsibility to our students to send them out +ith as much instruction and back up as they need.

,e$el - Reiki This first reiki le!el should introduce the student to reiki and its practice& and sho+ them ho+ to conduct healing on themsel!es and on others. t should also pro!ide a good solid basis of continuing communication bet+een student and teacher.

The most popular >history= in many reiki books is that told by 'a+ayo Takata. $rs. Takata passed do+n the story of reiki in the form of fable or storytelling& as is often done in 'a+aiian tradition. 'o+e!er& this has led to much confusion in other cultures& so the history +e publish is the last factual account kno+n to us +hen this book +ent to print. 'ealing Self and others Aou may be gi!en a diagram of the hand positions to use +hen treating yourself and others. These are guidelines in order to gi!e the student an indication of +here to place their hands in order to treat the body in the most complete +ay. As e"perience gro+s you +ill find your hands guided to +here healing is most needed& but these hand positions +ill get you started. Treatments are al+ays gi!en on a clothed body or in the aura. .eto"ification or cleansing After any healing session or attunement your body +ill make ad4ustments to the energy& and cleanse and clear itself of to"ins. This can be barely noticeable in most cases& but occasionally mood s+ings or flu/type symptoms can occur. As the body ad4usts to this cleansing& symptoms +ill disappear. 1efore recei!ing a treatment the client should be +arned of these possibilities. Treating pets and plants All sentient beings can be treated +ith reiki. Animals are usually most recepti!e to reikiN cats in particular. Plants too can benefit from a reiki >feed= from time to time& and many a drooping pot plant has been re!i!ed +ith a dose of reiki. #ecei!ing the #eiki 3 attunement This is an energetic transmission bet+een teacher and student +hen the reiki channels are opened and a path+ay is cleared& enabling the student to channel reiki themsel!es. f attending a class it is normal for four attunements to be gi!en at stages or inter!als during the class. f gi!en remotely then all four stages +ill usually be sent at once. These attunements can !ary from teacher to teacher and some no+ may only gi!e a singular attunement at le!el one.

7hakras The use of the chakra system is not part of original <apanese reiki but has been added to 6estern teaching in order to simplify the treatment of the body. 6hilst it is !ery helpful to ha!e a basic kno+ledge of anatomy& many people no+ prefer to +ork +ith the se!en ma4or chakras& as they correspond to the !arious organs and functions of the mind and body. There is more detailed information on chakras in the 9E"tras9 chapter. Frounding #eiki is a po+erful energy and a session of healing or an attunement can cause feelings of >spaciness= and disorientation. Therefore !arious grounding techni0ues can be employed to bring the student back into the >no+=& by reconnecting them +ith the Earth=s energy. There is more detailed information on grounding in the 9Specials9 section. $editation The ability to meditate isn>t necessary to channel reiki& but it is important to one=s concentration and one=s spiritual de!elopment to be able to still the mind and rela" the body. ;arious forms of meditational practice may be taught& and you +ill find some suggestions in the >E"tras= chapter. Ethics of +orking +ith clients This is of prime importance& and students must be a+are of the basic rules of cleanliness and propriety +hen dealing +ith members of the public. n some locations& there are also regulations in!ol!ed +hich you may +ish to discuss +ith clients& and +e go into more detail on this later in this chapter. Fuides The reiki teacher may or may not include discussion about reiki guides& or spiritual helpers in their curriculum. Although not considered to be a part of traditional reiki practice& many feel an indubitable connection to presences +ho seem to guide and protect as they practice their reiki. How do know when it.s time to mo$e to the second le$el) A first le!el reiki practitioner should become comfortable +ith channeling the reiki energy& and grounding e"cess energy& as +ell. The Reiki Symbols

#eiki On 1ook 2 1osco& Smith

))

The origin of the reiki symbols is an issue +hich is shrouded in some contro!ersy. Old reiki legend tells us that the symbols appeared to %sui as a !ision +hen he recei!ed reiki in meditation on $ount (urama. Ne+er history sources close to %sui maintain that the symbols +ere added after reiki had been in use for some time& as a method of training second le!el reiki students ho+ to better focus their intent on the functions that each symbol pro!ides. Symbols are generally besto+ed upon the student for use +hen they are attuned to second le!el reiki& ho+e!er some apparently use them in the first degree le!el& as +ell. Some reiki practitioners use the symbols faithfully +ith each reiki session. Other practitioners consider the symbols to be training +heels ?an e"pression that +e understand originates +ith Fendai $aster 'iroshi .oi@ +hich e!entually they mo!e beyond the need for. $any others continue to utili=e the symbols +hen they +ish& en4oying the ritual of the symbol dra+ing and use. Each reiki practitioner must decide +hat the symbols +ill mean to them in their practice. Traditionally& symbols are placed +ithin the aura of the student +hen sGhe is attuned. Once embedded into the chakras& the three practitioner>s symbols are readily acti!ated +hen the student +ishes to use them. $aster le!el students recei!e a fourth symbol for their practice. The symbols are then used in treatments +hen a particular function of the reiki energy is desired. t is traditionally taught that the symbols are sacred. 6e belie!e this has been misinterpreted to mean that they are also to be kept secret. $any people feel that this secrecy has caused misrepresentations of the symbols o!er the years. ndeed& many reikis find that they ha!e been taught or attuned +ith symbols dra+n differently from tradition& or from those gi!en to other practitioners. Some also say that +hen $rs. Takata initiated each of her students& including masters& she sometimes !aried the symbols slightly for each. 7learly the symbols +orked for all& e!en though there +ere !ariations. -ortunately& since the symbols are not needed to use the reiki energy& this does not hamper one>s reiki practice. The focus of your intent is all that is needed to use the energy of each symbol& +hether it is dra+n the +ay it +as +hen you +ere attuned& or not. As you research reiki you>ll see many different symbols& some said to be reiki& some not. Some of these symbols come from other types of energy therapies. Some of the symbols come from ne+er& different reiki systems +hich ha!e de!eloped since the ad!ent of %sui reiki. The four traditional %sui reiki symbols are sho+n belo+& along +ith a description of their purposes.

How to 1cti$ate the Symbols There are se!eral +ays to acti!ate the symbols. The most important thing to remember is that they respond to your intent to use them. One +ay to use them is to dra+ them out in

This is a nod to established ritual methods& and may or may not be follo+ed by each indi!idual practitioner& as is their preference.@ f you prefer& you can !isuali=e the symbol +hilst holding an image of it in your mind. f you are good at !isuali=ing then try dra+ing it in your mind in !iolet on a +hite background2 or +hite on a !iolet background as both of these are important healing colors. f !isuali=ation is not one of your better skills& do not +orry. Simply intending to use the symbol and seeing it as best you can +ill be sufficient. Some people use the symbols by chanting their mantras& or names& and sending reiki +hile doing this. Again& the rule of three is generally used +hen intoning the symbol names. t is thought that the sound made by speaking the name of each symbol sets up a particular !ibration +hich aids the healing process. Any of these methods may be used alone& or in tandem +ith any of the others. Aour o+n creati!ity may help you find other methods +ith +hich to use the symbols as +ell.

&ho Ku Rei 34 &5 ?9choh/koo/reh/ee9@ is the -ocus or Po+er symbol. t is often

abbre!iated as 7(#. 7alled Symbol P3& it represents the element earth& and the physical +orld. <apanese dictionaries define 7ho (u #ei as 9official edict& or command9& as one commands the po+er of reiki into use. t may be seen as dra+ing the po+er from source& and pulling it do+n through the channel& focusing it on the sub4ect. How does Reiki work)

As human beings& our bodies are bioelectric machines naturally emitting an energy field +hich surrounds us in all directions. Some refer to this human energy field as an 9aura9. As it e"tends into our surroundings& the aura not only carries our subtle energies into our en!ironment& but also senses the subtle energies around us. 6e can detect information from the flo+ of this energy on subtle le!els& both consciously and unconsciously. Aou may ha!e done this the last time you 9felt9 that someone had entered the room behind you. t is their energy field you +ere sensing +hen you e"perienced this. $uch of this energy e"change is done through the chakras& +hich may be considered intake and outflo+ !al!es of the aura for the subtle energies. There are se!en ma4or chakras& and many secondary ones& each processing energy at specific energy

fre0uencies. n turn& the fre0uency at +hich energy is processed determines ho+ +e percei!e that energy and the information it carries. The %irst chakra percei!es information sensed +ithin the physical body& i.e. physical pain& shi!ers& balance or imbalance& +ellness& flight or fight& or other physical sensations. The second chakra processes information about the emotional state of the healer and others. The third chakra gi!es us information in an intuiti!e +ay& such as +hen +e think of someone and they then telephone us& or +hen +e feel +e shouldn>t take a particular airplane only to find that it had flight problems later. These are our Dgut feelingsE. The %ourth chakra processes feelings of lo!e that e"tend beyond oursel!es and our immediate family. The %i%th chakra processes energy in the form of sounds& music& +ords& smells& tastes and other sensory perceptions. The si+th chakra pro!ides information in the manner of pictures or !isual feedback. The se$enth chakra processes information as +hole concepts. 6e should note that the aura also has layers +hich correspond to the functions of the corresponding chakra. n other +ords& the first aura layer processes information in a physical +ay& the second in an emotional +ay& and so on. 6hen +e use reiki& +e are applying subtle energies to our sub4ect to balance and restore energy +ithin their aura. Not a belief system& reiki therapy is a !ery real and !ery concrete process. t does not re0uire the sub4ect to belie!e in it for it to +ork. nstead& reiki +ill go +here needed +ithin the energy body of the sub4ect to heal and rebalance energy on physical& mental& emotional and spiritual le!els. 1y balancing the energy body& reiki balances our li!es& allo+ing us to function more fully +ith a rene+ed sense of +ell being. t remo!es blockages of stagnant energy& and rebalances areas of o!er stimulation +ithin the energy field& allo+ing the aura to process energy properly. The aura and the chakras are discussed more fully in chapter three of this book.

each successi!e layer of the aura& e!entually manifesting themsel!es in a physical sense& causing us dis/ease. Through the use of reiki& and the intent to remo!e these blockages& +e may restore the aura to complete health again. t is +hen the energy of our aura is free flo+ing that +e are most connected +ith both oursel!es& and our en!ironment. 6hen energy becomes blocked at any of these chakras& +e lose the ability to process information in the manner associated +ith that chakra in a healthy manner. So& in order to function at the highest le!el +e can& it is necessary to keep all the energy of our aura free flo+ing. This is +here reiki may be used to heal the blockages& and keep us +ell on all le!els of our being.

Scanning
7ontemporary reiki practice often includes checking the sub4ect5s aura for blockages and other areas in need of treatment. Typically& this DscanningE is done by turning on the reiki and passing one5s hands o!er the energy field of the sub4ect& feeling for any inconsistencies +ithin the aura. %sui/sensei asked his students to de!elop 9hibiki9 to sense the 9byosen9 +ithin the aura of their sub4ect. 9'ibiki9 are the sensations that one can feel in their hands +hen sensing inconsistencies in the sub4ect>s aura. 91yosen9 are the inconsistencies that hibiki detects. $uch practice in treating +ith reiki can help to de!elop the skill of feeling for byosen& and detecting it +ith hibiki. Should a blockage or imbalance be sensed +ithin the aura& you may choose one of many +ays to proceed +ith the treatment. Aou can use reiki to blo+ the energy e!en or to blo+ an energy path clear by taking a breath& holding it in to charge it +ith reiki& and blo+ing it into the area in 0uestion. The energy in the sub4ect>s aura may also be pushed& pulled& loosened& scooped out& or charged +ith reiki as you feel is needed. Alternately& reiki may be gi!en +ithout added manipulation of the energy body& trusting that reiki +ill heal for the sub4ect5s highest good. 'ealing re0uests are fre0uently posted at #eikiBOn and members al+ays respond. Not only does the healee benefit& but the students also get good practice and feedback from these treatments.

#eiki Ethics
Our Res'onsibility to Reiki6 t might be said that the practice of reiki is t+ofold: to share healing energy +ith others& and to enable others to do the same if they so desire. #eiki practice is generally di!ided

#eiki On 1ook 2 1osco& Smith

,,

into se!eral le!els of training& the first t+o dealing +ith using reiki on oneself and others& and the ad!anced le!el de!oted to teaching the student ad!anced reiki skills. This includes ho+ to teach reiki& and ho+ to pass the healing ability on to others !ia attunement. The first t+o le!els are generally gi!en to all +ho ask. The third or master le!el of reiki is generally reser!ed for those +ho +ish to heal on deeper& or soul le!els& and +ho +ish to pass on the kno+ledge and healing ability of reiki to others. #esponsible reiki masterGteachers make certain that their students are +ell informed and +ell trained as to the use of reiki& so that the student may put forth a fair and accurate representation of reiki to others. #eiki students +ho are attuned +ithout the accompanying training are more likely to lack the skills to uphold the reputation of reiki. They may do much to heal themsel!es or others& but may not be able to portray and e"plain reiki ade0uately to skeptics and critics. This could potentially damage the reputation of reiki irreparably& as the practice of reiki is still in its stages of infancy. 6hat a shame that +ould be& considering ho+ useful reiki is to e!ery facet of our li!es. Accurate representation of our reiki skill and certification is also necessary to uphold the reputation of reiki in general. t goes +ithout saying that +e should al+ays be honest and accurate in the +ay +e present oursel!es to the public regarding our le!el of reiki and reiki training. Our *+'ectations6 t is also important not to form e"pectations of +hat you +ant reiki to do as it is recei!ed. t is our place to focus our intent to target our sub4ect for the reiki& and to allo+ the reiki to flo+. 1eyond that& +e must trust that reiki +ill do that +hich is for the highest good of the recipient. -or e"ample& +e may +ish that reiki +ould heal our sub4ect of a certain condition or illness& but if the lessons and issues +hich brought about that condition ha!e not yet been resol!ed& reiki +ill allo+ the sub4ect to continue the e"perience of the illness so that the sub4ect may learn from it. f a particular illness is being targeted& then +e may assume that reiki may start by resol!ing the issues and attitudes +hich may ha!e caused it before a cure may be effected. This is not to say that miracles cannot occur +ith reiki. They can& and often do. 1ut to tell our sub4ect that they may e"pect a miracle& only to ha!e them continue to li!e +ith their illness until the primary causes of the illness are resol!ed& +ould be a cruel letdo+n. t may cause the sub4ect ?and anyone they ha!e shared kno+ledge of their treatment +ith@ to lose respect for the practice of reiki altogether. #eiki is meant to be a complementary therapy& to be used along +ith +hate!er health or medical procedures or therapies the sub4ects holds as 9traditional9. 6e may not be sure +hat le!els reiki +ill +ork on first and foremost& so +e shouldn>t predict an outcome for our sub4ect. After all& it is they +ho are healing themsel!es. 6e are only pro!iding them +ith the tool to do so. 6e are only a channel for the reiki flo+.

The &ost6 There are many students +ho are ready& +illing and able to learn all they can about reiki& and also pass that information on +hene!er appropriate. These are the students +ho +ill keep reiki ali!e and thri!ing long after the rest of us are gone. 6hat a disser!ice to reiki +e +ould be doing by setting fees that +ould restrict these passionate students from learning all they can about the practice and passage of reiki. On the other hand& it isn>t unreasonable of a practitioner to ask for compensation for the time they put into their healing sessions and teaching. A modest and reasonable fee +ould seem to be the ans+er. $any practitioners find that also pro!iding a means for financially disabled clients becomes necessary& as +ell. Some barter for their ser!ices& or take a reduced fee. t is in your best interest to +ork out a mutually satisfying arrangement +ith your clientele. The Treatments6 Treatment ethics should include letting your sub4ect kno+ that they shouldn>t be e"pecting a massage& and that they +ill not be touched inappropriately. Let them kno+ that you +ill not be diagnosing their condition& unless you are trained and certified to do so& and specify that you are doing so in addition to the reiki. Encourage your sub4ect to tell you at any time if they are uncomfortable +ith +hat is going on for any reason. 1e there for them after the treatment as +ell& to ans+er any 0uestions they may ha!e about the treatment they ha!e 4ust recei!ed& or any treatment they had in the past. &lient Relationshi'6 t is best to treat your sub4ects as you yourself +ould prefer to be treated. #espect their pri!acy& and keep treatment sessions and information confidential. t is possible that personal information may be re!ealed during healing sessions& or attunement. #emain non4udgmental and respectful of the sub4ect>s information& doing nothing that may re!eal the identity of the sub4ect to others& unless you ha!e asked for& and recei!ed their permission to do so. Appropriate beha!ior +ith our sub4ects is a must& as +ell. Along +ith respecting their personal pri!acy& +e must also respect their personal space. *go6 6e should al+ays remember that being reiki does not make us gods& and our attitudes and demeanor should ne!er reflect anything other than sincere concern for the +ell/being of our sub4ects. As reikis& +e are channels for the subtle healing energies of the reiki system to +hich +e are attuned / nothing more. Anyone +ho +ishes it can be attuned to reiki N it is not a skill +hich places us abo!e any other being.

How do you send reiki #by intent#) All le!els of #eiki can send reiki energy 9by intent9. This means that in order to send reiki to someone near or far& all you need do is fi" in your mind the person& place& thing& or situation that you +ish the energy to be sent to& and reiki +ill go there. Others find it useful to describe reiki use in terms of the +ell/being of our energy bodies as bioelectromagnetic machines. Still others look to+ards 0uantum physics and the theories of non/locality to e"plain ho+ reiki does its thing. (hat is #'ure reiki#) 6hen one refers to 9pure reiki9 it is generally understood that they are referring to methodology used by %sui/sensei himself& and not added on by another. Sending reiki only +ith permission is a sign of respect to+ards the sub4ect>s personal beliefs and +ishes. % reiki is an intelligent energy2 why should use the hand 'ositions) Aou can 4ust turn reiki on& and let it go +here it may. 1ut there are other reasons +hy using the hand positions may be helpful. The basic hand positions allo+ feedback from the different areas of the recipient>s body& allo+ing you to feel +here the reiki is being dra+n the strongest. Aou +ould treat this area by feeding reiki to it until the energy balances +ith the rest of the body>s energy field ?+hich you>ll be feeling because you are treating the +hole body@. This particular aspect +ould be like a hands/on scan of the energy field. Should there be no particular health problems in your recipient& the hand positions +ill treat each group of internal organs separately& to keep them healthy. -or the no!ice practitioner& hand positions guarantee a thorough application of reiki across the energy field and remo!e the physical body of the

Treatments using the hand positions from top to bottom also allo+ for a do+n+ard flo+ of energy and for aura debris to be released. (hat can do to 're'are %or the li%e changing energy reiki brings into one.s li%e) 1ringing reiki into your life may cause a great deal of change in your en!ironment as it raises the fre0uency of the energies +hich you are capable of gi!ing and recei!ing in your energy body The higher fre0uency energy that you +ill then be processing may conflict +ith older& less noble energies +hich pre!iously surrounded you. #eiki +ill s+eep negati!es from your life and at times that can seem a bit disorienting& but +hate!er changes you e"perience +ill come for a reason and ultimately for your o+n highest good. Setting up a practice could be done in many +ays& depending on the circumstances surrounding you and your locale. Aou might decide to offer your ser!ices from your o+n home. Aou might group together +ith other reikis in your area and forming a sort of coalition& or group practice. Aou might offer ser!ices at community e!ents& fairs& or other such places& or you might choose to be a portable reiki& tra!eling to your client>s location for treatment. Ad!ertisement could be done by flyer or handout& by ad!ertising in a local publication& or a +ell/being or alternati!e health publication. Aou could try a mass mail marketing& or nternet +ebsite. Again& choose the methods +hich +ill best suit your indi!idual circumstances. 6hen you are open for public ser!ice& you must ha!e a strong understanding of public +ork ethics& be +illing to keep records including billing& documentation of patients> sessions& and be able to ans+er any 0uestions about reiki and continued treatment.
