The Aerial Optical Cables, OPGW/OPPC

Design and Manufacture
A wide variety of aerial optical cables is offered by nkt cables to provide most economic as well as highly customised solutions. Supported cables types are: Optical Ground Wire (OPGW) Optical Phase Conductor (OPPC) Metallic Aerial Self-supported Cable (MASS) Stainless steel tube with integrated optical bres Aluminium-clad steel or galvanised steel strands Aluminium or Aluminium-alloy strands

Stranded Tube Design and Central Tube Designs

nkt cables OPGW/OPPC designs are based on highly reliable and robust stainless steel tube technology. The stainless steel tube is either stranded in the rst layer of OPGW/OPPC (Stranded Tube Design) or placed in the core of cable (Central Tube Design).

Stranded Tube OPGW Design

Materials
OPGW/OPPC of nkt cables are made of materials dened in international standards: aluminium and aluminium alloy: e.g. AL1, AL2, AL3 aluminium-clad steel: e.g. A20SA, 27SA galvanised steel: e.g. ST1A, ST4A Central Tube OPGW Design

Stainless Steel Tube with integrated optical bres

As manufacturer of stainless steel tubes for our OPGW/ OPPC and for other applications, nkt cables is able to provide the right tube in best time. Each tube is lled with a thixotropic lling compound and hermetically sealed to provide best protection of enclosed optical bres. On request, we can provide the stainless steel tube covered with aluminium foil.

Optical Fibres
nkt cables integrates optical bres based on standards of International Telecommunication Union (ITU) e.g.: ITU-T G.652, Characteristics of a single-mode optical bre and cable ITU-T G.655, Characteristics of a non-zero dispersionshifted single-mode optical bre and cable Other optical bre types can be offered upon request.

VALCAP Grid Monitoring for Overhead Lines

Today ampacity of your grid is restricted by thermal limits based on xed and standardised parameters with high safety margins. It is not possible to control grids dynamically and in real time. With VALCAP you can maximise the efciency of your existing grid: continuous temperature monitoring and evaluation of the actual environment conditions along overhead lines and power cables allow you to decide precisely how much load your grid can transport safely. Our VALCAP system will even do more for you: with its intelligent software companion ADAPPRO you get information of expected future loads, for every day and every hour. So you can pro-actively manage the energy load transmission of your grid. It can be used on existing lines as well as for solutions based on phase conductors with integrated optical bres OPPC. For more information please request the brochure VALCAP Grid Monitoring and Rating.

The quality of the bre optic protection decisively inuences the systems reliability and long-term stability. The selection of the respective bre optic joint box technology for aerial cables has a decisive inuence on the performance and service reliability of the entire communication system. nkt cables is one of the very rst and most experienced OPGW/OPPC cables and Fibre Optic Joint Box manufacturer. With our excellent products for OPGW as well as OPPC, you will benet from our long-term experience and sophisticated knowledge as bre optic aerial cable and bre optic accessory manufacturer.

OPGW Joint Box

With our new universal splice closure VALCONNECT, nkt cables offers a highly exible and universal OPGW closure for OPGW and MASS cables of all diameters from 9 mm to 28,6 mm. The installation set of this Hood Joint covers all parts and adapters that enable to mount all wellknown OPGW designs. A quick, effective and therefore cost reduced installation on site is guaranteed with our new universal hood joint concept called VALCONNECT. A new casting solution and connectors with variable inlet diameters result in having less single parts to assemble on site and on the other hand, a sophisticated adapter concept makes our new Hood Joint become an all-rounder. At the same time all our outstanding features of nkt cables Hood Joint technology, like high tightness and extreme mechanical resistance have not been changed. The new universal Hood Joint of nkt cables includes all well-known advantages of nkt cables OPGW bre optic accessory technology.

Design
The bre optic joint boxes of nkt cables perfectly protect optical bres from water and humidity by providing an extreme high tightness class of IP 67. By the use of aluminium cast housing, a maximum mechanical protection surrounds the sensitive optical bre connections.

Installation and Services

Taking care
is the driving force of nkt cables activities in this eld. Starting at the earliest stage of your project, we are focussed on your benet, to provide your tailored solutions just to what actually is needed, to assist in modication of existing systems, always keeping an eye on most feasible technical and economic solutions. In this way nkt cables can efciently contribute to reliability and longevity of your electricity transmission and distribution system.

Engineering Works
The services of nkt cables include various tasks beginning with consultation of the clients. Design and calculations are made to prepare a solid basis for the selection of optimum solution. The success and acceptance as high-tech partner based on customer-specic and economical solutions in creating optical cables and their accessories. Customised and economical solutions are engineered by highly experienced staff using state-of-the-art software for construction and design, calculations of sags and tensile loads as well as the nkt cables' high-standard test labs for tensile and routine tests including a climatic chamber. Making use of nkt cables expertise and engineering assistance already during the design phase, is the rst step to nalise a successful project.

Installation Works
Installation works including splicing of nkt cables OPGW Joint Boxes, OPPC Termination Units and OPPC straight Joints can be provided by excellent partners.

Supervision
From the beginning of OPGW/OPPC manufacture in 1989, nkt cables has supervised the installation of their optical cables on site and consequently has also carried out the assembling of nkt-accessories, e.g. OPGW joint boxes and OPPC Termination Units in substations. Nowadays, most of our customers carry out the abovementioned assembling by themselves or they assign a local installer as subcontractor. If necessary and required, nkt cables will support and supervise the installation of optical cables and the assembling of accessories on site.

Training
We carry out staff training for installation of OPGW and OPPC as well as the assembling of accessories. This assembling training will be performed at nkt cables in Cologne. For nkt cables it is important to keep a close contact to our customers and to make sure that our accessories will be well-installed on site.

Type Testing
All our OPGW/OPPC have passed respective type tests. Comprehensive type test reports are available and can be mailed upon request.

Routine Testing
Inspection of incoming raw materials according to the manufactures Quality plan Optical bre attenuation coefcient at operational wavelength Cable design Quality of cable surface Lay length of armouring Diameter of cable Diameter of cable components Mechanical and electrical cable component characteristics

Factory Acceptance Test (FAT)

In view of providing proper transparency of the test results, all our customers are free to witness these tests being properly carried out at nkt cables facility. Typical tests: Design Visual inspection of the cable elements Lay length of armouring Diameter of cable Weight of cable nkt cables has its own tensile test laboratory for tensile tests performed on OPGW/OPPC as well as optional temperature tests carried out in a climatic chamber. nkt cables has a completely computer-supported test eld where the environmental effects can be simulated and their inuence on the bres can be observed and recorded. The test eld is used by development and quality department. It consists of a tensile test machine with a span length of approx. 50 m. In addition to the mechanical parameters tensile load and cable elongation , the optical parameters bre attenuation and bre strain are continuously observed during the whole test cycle. To full requirements of customers with extreme winter periods, nkt cables is able to carry out temperature cycling tests down to -60C. The test samples, optical cables on drums (OPGW/OPPC) including their accessories (Metal Hood Joints, Termination Units, etc.) are tested in a climatic chamber. In company-own testing facilities, we conduct, among many other tests, quality inspection tests in accordance with IEC 60 794-4.
