Carolino 2012-59026 Geology has been of great help until today whether it is the past or present we want to study. The scope of Geology includes happenings and events dated millions of years ago and up to the recent present. Geology does not only answer questions about the Earth and its landforms, but also tackle life forms that have lived many years ago. Studying minerals such as diamonds and quartz, and their compositions are also included in the science of Geology. How and why volcanoes erupt and erosion occurs, and other related fields can also be answered by studying Geology. The studies involving Earths materials and processes is not only limited to Geology, but is also studied in Chemistry and Physics. Many other branches of Geology can be extracted from it because of its large scope of study. I am currently studying Public Health in the University of the Philippines Manila, and I have taken two Geology subjects. I took Natural Science 4 during my first year, second semester, and based on experience, it was lots of fun. The class had the best meetings during discussions of minerals. We were very fascinated and interested in knowing their components. Since Public Health is a chemistry major course, we easily understood and grasped the lessons concerning minerals. Studying the three types of rocks and being able to distinguish one from another was also fun and interesting. But if there was one topic that caught my interest the most, it would be the Natural Disasters lecture. Our professor that time, Ms. Astrid Gabo, discussed about the different natural hazards that occur on Earth. Such events included earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, erosions, flooding and more. Because my course is concerned with and related to health and medicine, I believe that the topic of Natural Hazards has significance to what I will be in the future. Being aware of the effects and tragedy that these hazards may bring to the public, being able to study them one by one in detail, and being in the know of these events, it will help us, Public Health students and others with courses related to medicine, to know what to prepare for the victims of these tragic events. It will help us to determine what medication, treatment and/or therapy to bring and/or do for the victims. With the aid of Geology, we would be able to prepare beforehand everything that we will need to conduct medical services to towns, cities, and states affected. The Philippines has recently been affected by strong events such as earthquakes and storms. Being able to know what the effects of such events are and what kinds of diseases theyll acquire from the events, students and professionals would be able to prepare the necessities and right medication. An example of this is the recent storm Haiyan (Yolanda) which affected mostly the Visayas area and caused floods in most of Leyte and Samar. Public Health students have been taught of diseases and illnesses that people might acquire from flash floods, and therefore we can prepare the medication beforehand. Illnesses and diseases that people may acquire from heavy floods are severe colds, Pneumonia, high fever, Leptospirosis, to name a few. Because we are able to study Geology and Medication, we are able to help people and prepare the needed treatment to avoid a high mortality rate. All fields of science are significant to our lives. They provide information about the most basic knowledge to the more complex ones. From the tiniest species to the world unknown, from millions of light years to the most recent ones, and from the creation of the Earth to the formation of life, the different fields of science will most likely have the answers to questions

related. Just as how important medicine and health is to mankind, Geology is as important as well. It is significant to each and every one of us because of multiple reasons. Mostly because of the Natural Hazards and the disastrous effects in brings. And for those interested in studying previous life forms, there is the branch of Paleontology from Geology. For those interested in studying minerals, its components and where they may be used, there is the branch of Mineralogy from Geology. For those interested in studying rocks, how they are from, where they are formed, and how the cycle of rocks progresses from one to another, there is the branch of Petrology also from Geology. And the fields of Geology are not limited in this scope only, but there are other more, various fields extending from soil to mountainous lands. Students may find something that might capture their interest in Geology, and thus it is advisable for high school students to have at least one subject concerning the science of the Earth. This way, they are introduced to the field and they will be able to find out more about Geology, its significance to men, and to our everyday lives. Geology has continued to influence and impact our lives through their studies of the Earth that we live in. Without Geology, there wouldnt be findings about the previous land and life forms, studies about minerals that we use in our daily lives, studies about rocks, studies on why earthquakes and other natural hazards happen, their effects on Earth and to mankind as well. For scholars, it is very important to have deeper knowledge on how the Earth has changed through time due to plate tectonics crushing against or away from each other and other topics related. Another fascinating topic of Geology is how the former Earth looks like and how lands have drifted to and from each other, evidences of these happenings are similar soil components found in one country and in another country, and both are from different continents. Being enlightened from these issues and subjects gives us assurance that more mysteries and unknowns may be uncovered. And we owe it all to Geology, we owe it all to Science.
