Derik Bracconeri and Zachary Pinto attempt to keep their JENGA tower standing upright during Seneca High Schools Buddies Game

Buddies Game Night
Athlete
shares
tales of
addiction
By NICK COHEN
The Sun
A former college and NBA star
came to the Lenape Regional
High School District last week,
but he did not come with stories
of fame, lavish success and the re-
alization of ones potential. He
spoke of the risks of addiction
and how just a few decisions can
turn a dream into a nightmare.
Once a McDonalds All-Ameri-
can and standout at Fresno State
University, Chris Herren now
spends his time touring the coun-
try warning athletes, students,
parents and whoever will listen
about how it easy it can be to lose
everything to addiction.
I can remember coming into
auditoriums just like this and lis-
tening to someone on stage talk
about the risks of drinking and
drugs and I said Ill never be that
guy. Im ranked ninth in the coun-
try as a high school player. Im a
McDonalds All-American. I had a

as a freshman at Boston College,
Herren said. From there, I took
one line of cocaine as an 18-year-
old in my first month at BC, and it
took me 14 years to walk away
from it.
Before he played his first game
at Boston College, Herren failed a
drug test for marijuana and co-
caine use. Later during his fresh-
man year, he failed two more drug
tests and was kicked off the team
and out of the university. He later
transferred to Fresno State Uni-
versity, and after failing another
drug test and entering a rehabili-
tation facility, he returned to the
team to have a solid collegiate ca-
reer.
A capacity crowd packed the
Performing Arts Center at Chero-
kee High School on Nov. 18 to lis-
ten to Herren present his story.
Herrens extensive visit to the dis-
trict, which included two presen-
tations at each high school as well
as the program open to the public,
was made possible through an
outpouring of donations, as well
as a $29,000 donation from the
LRHSD Foundation. His presen-
tations were a part of the district-
wide initiative DEFY the Issue.
The initiative is a community
coalition involving Evesham,
Medford, Medford Lakes, Mt. Lau-
rel, Shamong, Southampton, Tab-
ernacle and Woodland to educate
families and residents of all ages
about the dangers of illegal drug
and alcohol use as well as to pro-
vide support for young people by
empowering them to defy the
pressures of drug and alcohol
use.
Defy the Issue, a drug- and al-
cohol-free campaign, continues to
be the focus of student-to-student
presentations both within our
schools and with the middle
schools in the eight townships
which we serve, LRHSD superin-
tendent Carol Birnbohm said.
And while it is impossible to at-
tribute it to one thing, we can say
with confidence that the message
is being spread effectively
throughout our community.

County middle school students

using drugs and alcohol has
dropped significantly, according
to the results of a county survey.
About 2 percent of county stu-
dents in grades six, seven and
eight had consumed alcohol dur-
ing the previous 30 days, down
from 6 percent when the survey
was performed in 2011. Herren
was adamant that education re-
garding drugs must begin early.
When I ask children in the
schools I visit to draw a picture of
what a drug addict looks like,
they draw pictures of homeless
people and prostitutes, Herren
said. They see addicts on their
last day, not their first. They dont
know about day one enough. It all
starts with red (plastic) cups.
Herrens message was the
same to parents who believe it to
be OK that their child drinks un-
derage if it is monitored.
Thats how it started for
everybody. Kids dont start by tak-
ing heroin and OxyContin. It
starts by drinking beers or smok-
ing blunts in someones base-
ment. Thats where addiction be-
gins for everybody, Herren said.
Not to mention the obvious fact
that its illegal for children to
drink under the age of 21. How do
you draw lines for your kids if
you make breaking that law OK?
Even though Herren speaks to
thousands of people each month,
he knows his message will go
mostly unheard and his warnings
unheeded. That is why he keeps
his goal for each presentation
much smaller.
I thank God for all of my bad
days because it led me to speak to
hundreds of thousands of people.
I pray each time before I speak to
let me make a difference in just
one persons life today. Just one
person, Herren said. When I re-
ceive an email from someone say-
ing after hearing me speak they
are seeking help, that email
means more than anything I ever
accomplished as a basketball
player.

Tabernacle Cosmos have
an undefeated season
The Tabernacle Cosmos, Divi-
sion III girls soccer team, com-
pleted an undefeated season Sun-
day, Nov. 17 by winning the end-of-
season Pinelands Tournament,
defeating Southampton 3-1.
Third- and fourth-grade
girls from Tabernacle, Indian
Mills, Medford Lakes, Southamp-
ton and Woodlands competed in
the league throughout the fall sea-
son.
After going 7-0-2 during the reg-
ular season, the Cosmos, one of
two Tabernacle teams, defeated
an Indian Mills team in the tour-
nament semifinals 7-3 on Nov. 16.
In the finals, the Cosmos' right-
winger Gianna Grasso put home
a goal in the first two minutes of
the game while the Cosmos de-
fense held Southampton scoreless
through the first half.
A penalty kick was awarded
about halfway through the second
half, and Alex Miller scored the
game-winning goal with a kick
just under the cross bar, making
it 2-0.
Southampton surged later
in the second half to draw
within one goal at 2-1, but with
less than two minutes to play
Grasso booted her second goal of
the game clinching the champi-
onship.
All 13 players contributed to
the winning cause either offen-
sively or defensively, including
Alex Miller, Ally Avery, Ally
Evans, Danielle Duff, Emma
Grace Weiss, Emma Lee-Pesotski,
Gianna Grasso, Gianna Tireco,
Jessica Ritter, Jillian Morris,
Lindsey Woodruff, Olivia Termi
and Sophia Adler.
"I've coached for many years,"
head coach Jack Miller said, "but
this was a most rewarding victo-
ry. Not only did we have a lot of
fun and team spirit, but each girl
exhibited the effort and desire to
win."
Miller was assisted by John
Tireco.
The Cosmos and coaches
would like to thank all the par-
ents for their tireless support as
well as soccer commissioner Dave
Curtis and the entire Tabernacle
Athletic Association for the op-
portunity bring home the cham-
pionship for the Tabernacle com-
munity.

The Lenape Regional High School Dis-
trict board members unanimously agreed
former NBA player Chris Herrens multi-
ple assemblies for the school and the recent
community speaking engagement have
been valuable for the community.
According to board member William
Bisignano, students and faculty gave their
full attention to Herren.
You could hear a pin drop when he
spoke. He maintained everyones atten-
tion, Bisignano said.
The board has recently taken heat for
paying Herren for his speaking engage-
ment with the district, Superintendent of
Schools Carol Birnbohm said, however the
money was raised and no money was used
from the budget.
When Chris [Heilig] saw him, he told us
we had to make sure every student saw
him, and we did, Birnbohm said.
Birnbohm recalled a reaction a student
had to Herren, noting the student couldnt
identify her peers issue, which lead to bul-
lying from other students.
It opened up many lines of communica-
tion and types of discussion, even bully-
ing, Bisignano said.
For Birnbohm, it was important for
every student in the school to listen to what
Herren has to say about what hes been
through. He has already spoken with
Cherokee and Lenape High School stu-
dents.
According to the LRHSD website, Her-
ren will conclude his tour of the LRHSD
with student-only presentations at
Shawnee High School on Monday, Dec. 2
and Seneca High School on Thursday, Dec.
5.
In other news:
Lenape and Seneca will pilot an inno-
vative Science, Technology, Engineering,
and Mathematics program beginning in
the 2014-2015 school year, made possible
through a $31,200 grant from Lockheed
Martin Corporation, a district release
said.
The Pathway to Engineering program,
from Project Lead the Way, will be piloted
with ninth-grade students at Lenape and
Seneca beginning in fall 2014, the release
said. The highly competitive program is
designed to attract and retain students in-
terested in pursuing a STEM-related post-

T
he holiday season has arrived.
And that means that many
good-hearted people and organ-
izations will be gathering food, cloth-
ing, toys, money and other items for
those less fortunate.
At The Sun, we want to help make
your event as successful as possible.
But to do that, we need your help.
Many retailers count on Black Fri-
day to help put their business in the
black for the year. If holiday sales are
strong, they have a good overall year. If
sales are soft, they struggle to get by.
The same theory can hold true for
nonprofits and other groups that de-
pend on the publics generosity during
the holiday season to see them through
the rest of the year. People, naturally,
are more giving during this time of the
year. So, in the coming weeks, youll
see bell-ringers, donation drives and a
lot of other efforts to help those in
need.
We salute everyone who holds a
drive to help those in need. But we also
want to help make those efforts as
grand and successful as possible.
To do that, we need to know about
your event well in advance (at least two
weeks is best). We need to know what
types of items you are trying to collect,
who will benefit from the drive, and,
most importantly, how people can get
involved to help you.
Email is the best way to send us this
information, and youll find our news
email address throughout this paper.
Then, after we get your information,
well take it from there. Well get it into
the paper and let everyone in town
know what it is you are trying to ac-
complish and how they can be a part of
it.
Many families are still struggling
with the economy. There always are
people in need.
Let us help you to help them. Send
us your event information and lets
make this a big donation year.
Holiday helpers
Its the season to help others; let us know about your fundraiser or drive
The need is there
From devastating storms to an economy
that still isnt humming along, the need for
donations this holiday period is strong.
Tell us about your fundraising effort or
donation drive, and well tell everyone
else.

This partnership opportunity
provided by Lockheed Martin

Heather Xenakis, Director of

According to the release, the
