THE WHITE HOUSE AMERICAN OR ROMAN?

? Should a Roman Catholic be the head of the government of the United States when the Roman hierarchy has always been opposed to many of our American free-doms? What about a Catholic President? The complacency and misapplied spirit of "tolerance," on the part of many American citizens, has almost become a virtue. "Be careful; don't say anything that would question a man's religion," is the word of the hour in many circles. Yet, there is so much under the cloak of religion (from nudism to Hinduism) it behooves responsible men to remove the cloak and see if all this "religion" is from God or Satan. All one need do is read history to ascertain the fact that Roman Catholi-cism is not exclusively religious, but has always been political in her aims and actions; sometimes more political than religious. NOT VOTING ON RELIGION It must be remembered that in deciding whether or not a Roman Catholic shall be President, is not a matter of penalizing a man politically because of his religion. It is not that America will rise up and cast a vote against a man's religion, but it is a matter of defeating a powerful system, organized in the name of religion, which seeks to overthrow many of our cherished freedoms and ultimately make the church (Catholic) the supreme guardian of the State. Surely, we must recognize the fact that the members of the Catholic Church in America, no doubt, by far the majority, are honest and sincere American citizens who are not fully aware of the designs and aims of the hierarchy with respects to the conflicting issues of Church and State. But, question: What can a private in the army do when an order, or directive, has been handed down by the Commander and Chief, the Generals, and the 2

Admirals? If there is any doubt about what may happen when members of the Catholic Church rebel against the Church and her authority, one need only read history to learn that thousands of Catholics have been put to death because of rebellion against the "powers that be" in the Catholic Church. Heretics (those who rebel, or deny the Catholic faith) may be ordered murdered! No, we would not vote for or against a man just because of his religion, but suppose a man's religious convictions and allegiances involves his fellowman's Constitutional Rights? For example, would American citizens wish to elect the head of Jehovah's Witnesses, a religious sect, much opposed to many civil statutes, as the President of the United States? Would American citizens want to elect a "religious" man, like Oral Roberts, the "fake healer," as the national head of the Health Department? It is not a matter of opposing a man because of his "religion," but the matter of a man's religion influencing him to oppose constitutional rights. There can be no doubt about it, religious convictions may affect ones fitness for civil office, especially the high office of the President of the United States. ROME NEVER CHANGES Rome never changes, she boasts. "All dogmatic decrees of the Pope made with or without his general council, are infallible and irreformable. Once made no pope or council can reverse them. There is no choice left to prelates about enforcing them on the clergy and people . . .". 'Catholic World, June 1871, page 422. "The Pope is the supreme judge, even of civil laws. and therefore is incapable of being under any true obligation to them." Civilita Cattolica, Vol. VIII, page.. 663. "As the true God can tolerate no strange gods, the true Church of Christ (Catholic) can tolerate no strange churches beside herself, or. what amounts to the same, she can recognize none as theoretically justified." PRIVATE BELIEF AND CITIZENSHIP DUTY Senator John F. Kennedy, a presidential hopeful, has attempted to white-wash these issues by stating that a public official can distinguish between his private beliefs and his public duty. "Catholic judges can and do grant divorces every day... even though in private life they may not believe in them," Mr. Kennedy declared. (UPI News Release, March 8, 1960). Surely Senator Kennedy, being a Catholic, is not ignorant of the Roman Catholic doctrine on this issue. I quote from Pope Pius XII, his statement to members of the Tribunal of Rota, November 13, 1949, the same statement reaffirmed before a group of United States Senators, November 17, 1949: "To take a particular case, a Catholic judge cannot pronounce a sentence of civil divorce, when it is a question of a marriage that is valid before God and His (Catholic) Church." Yes, a Catholic judge may pronounce a divorce in cases which the Catholic Church does not consider legal marriages, (nonCatholic), but Pope Pius XII declared no Catholic judge may grant a divorce if it is a Catholic marriage, unless of course, sanctioned by the church. Mr. Kennedy didn't state the fact that the Catholic Church considers all civil marriages, or, non-Catholic marriages, as illegal, or illegitimate marriages. PROTESTANT MOTHERS CONCUBINES "But impious laws taking no account of the sacredness of this great sacrament, placed it on the same level as all merely civil contracts; and the deplorable results has been that citizens, desecrating the holy dignity of marriage, have lived in legal concubinage instead of Christian matrimony" (Pope Leo XIII, Life of Leo, XIII, 332). "The Church does not consider merely civil marriage _4

as marriage in any sense" (Penal Legislation in New-Code of Canon Law, 1918, p. 298). "A civil marriage is only licensed cohabitation. There should be no such legal abomination, and the (Catholic) Church should be supreme judge of the marriage relation." Western Watchman, March 28, 1912, a Catholic journal. Could it be that Senator Kennedy repudiates the statement of Pope Pius XII, Nov. 6, 1949, when he said, "A judge may never oblige any person to perform an act contrary to the law of God and of His (Roman Catholic) Church . . . Wherefore he cannot pronounce a penal sentence which would be equivalent to approval of such law"? No faithful Catholic repudiates these declarations of the Pope! Senator Kennedy's double-talk about Catholic public officials distinguishing between private beliefs and public duties will not deceive those who face the facts. Roman Catholicism does not admit many of- the civil rights and liberties enjoyed by the citizens of the United States and will not permit them, if ever she has the power to contain them. VATICAN REPUDIATES KENNEDY'S CLAIM On the date of May 19, 1960, the Vatican boldly asserts that the Catholic Church is in the field of politics and has the "right and duty to intervene" in the political field and guide her membership in their political and civil activities. There can be no misunderstanding of the following quotation, in spite of the claims made by Senator Kennedy that a Catholic may separate his religious obligations and loyalties from his citizenship duties. Hear the quotation! Are you listening? VATICAN PAPER SAYS POLITICS CHURCH FIELD ROME (NYT) Osservatore Romano the Vatican newspaper, Tues5

day stated that the Roman Catholic hierarchy had "the right and the duty to intervene" in the political field to guide its flock. The newspaper rejected what it termed "the absurd split of conscience between the believer and the citizen." However, Osservatore Romano made it clear that its stern pronouncement was valid for Roman Catholic laymen everywhere. It deplored "the great confusion of ideas that is spreading, especially in some nations and also among Catholics, with regard to the relations between Catholic doctrine and social and political activities, and between the ecclesiastical hierarchy and the lay faithful in the civil field."

Senator Kennedy should publicly repudiate the Catholic hierarchy or make a public statement that he, as a faithful member of the Catholic Church, is subject to the Roman hierarchy which publicly declares that she has "the right and the duty to intervene" in the political field and to guide her members in their civil activities as well as religious. This is no new doctrine of the Catholic Church. She has always been political. If given time and opportunity she would destroy many of our cherished civil liberties in America and reduce the American citizenship to a religo-political society in servitude to the pope in Rome. WANT A CATHOLIC PRESIDENT? 1. Would you want a Catholic President when Catholicism claims the "right to use material and temporal means" to secure her complete control over her subjects. 2. Would you want a Catholic President when Catholi cism declares that "her authority is independent of the civil authority of the State. and is of a higher order. Though instituted for a spiritual end, the Church has the right to use material and temporal means to secure that end, and in the use of such means as are necessary she has exclusive authority." (Attwater, A Catholic Dictionary, 2nd ed., revised. The McMillan Company, page 41) 3. Would you want a Catholic President when the Pope claims the Catholic Church has the right to tell her members how to vote and whom they should elect as officials. The present Pope, John XXIII, only recently 6

stated, according to the St. Louis Review, date of Dec. 12, 1958,
"Catholics must unite their strength toward the common aid, and the Catholic hierarchy has the right and duty of guiding them."

4. Would you want a Catholic President when Roman Catholicism affirms; according to the Syallabus of Errors, by Pope Pius IX:
15. "It is an error to say that Everyman is free to embrace and profess that religion which he, led by the light of reason, thinks to be true religion." 55. "It is error to say that The Church is to be separate from, the State, and the State From the Church." 76. "It is error to say that The Abolition of the Civil Power which the Apostolic See possesses, would be extremely conducive to the liberty and prosperity of the Church." 77. "It is error to say that in this age of ours it is no longer expedient that the Catholic religion should be the only religion of the State, to the exclusion of all other cults whatsoever."

5. Would you want a Catholic to be President of the United States when the Roman Hierarchy declares:
THAT: "The State has not the right to the entire direction of public schools." THAT: The Church has the right to require the State not to leave a man free to profess his own religion." THAT: "The Church has the right to be perfectly free; the right to define her own rights and to define the limits in which they are to be exercised." THAT: "The Church has the right to require the State not to permit free expression of opinion." THAT: "The Church is empowered to grant or take away any temporal possession." THAT Catholicism asserts: "All human power is from evil, and must therefore be standing under the Pope." THAT: "The Pope has the right to give countries and nations which are non-Catholic to Catholic regents, who can reduce them to slavery." THAT "The Pope has the right to annul state laws, treaties, con stitutions, etc., to absolve from obedience thereto, as soon as they seem detrimental to the Church, or those of the Clergy." THAT: "The Pope can release from every obligation, oath, vow, either before or after having been made."

6. Would you want a Roman Catholic President when the Roman Catholic profession of faith, sanctioned by the Third Plenary Council of Baltimore, contains the follow ing' oath of allegiance to the Pope, which supersedes one's oath of allegiance of the United States of America:
"And I pledge and swear true obedience to the Roman Pontiff, Vicar of Jesus Christ, and successor of the blessed Peter, prince of the Apostles." This oath taken in conflict with, and an enemy to, our oath of naturalization. Our United States statutes declares: The alien seeking: citizenship must make oath to renounce forever all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign prince, potentate, state, or sovereignty, in particular, that to which he has been subject." Does not a citizen by birth owe the same allegiance to his country? Is he a trustworthy citizen when he pledges his oath of allegiance to a foreign potentate?

7. Would you want a Catholic President, even though he might take the oath of the President, when the Roman Canon law declares:
"No oaths are to be kept if they are against the interest of the Church of Rome"?

8: Would you want a Catholic President when the Papacy affirms:

"It is quite unlawful to demand, or defend, or to grant unconditional freedom of thought, of speech, of writing, or of worship." Pope Leo XIII.

9, Would you want a Catholic President when Catholicism affirms:

(1). That "Liberty of conscience is a perverse opinion by fraudulent endeavors of infidels. It is a corrupt fountain, a folly, a poisonous error." Civillta Cattolica, series IV, Vol. IV, page 430. (2). That: "The Catholic Press is my voice. I do not say it makes my voice heard, but it is my voice itself," Pope Pius XI, February 16, 1936. (3). That: "The (Catholic) Church claims exclusive jurisdiction over the marriage contract and marital state of Christians in all matters that concern their validity and liceity . . . There is a conflict between the two sets of (State and Church) laws . . . However, the civil power is bound to respect the divine (Catholic) law on marriage, and all civil laws which contradict the divine (Catholic) are necessarily null and void." (4). That: "The civil laws are binding on the conscience only so-long as they are conformable to the rights of the Catholic Church." A text book for Catholic schools by F. X. Shoupe, approved by Cardinal Manning, page 278. (5). That: "Freedom of Worship: The inalienable right of all men to worship God according to the teaching of the Catholic Church." Catholic Dictionary. (6). That: "It would be very erroneous to draw the conclusion that in America is to be sought the type of the most desirable status of the Church (Catholic), or that it would be universally lawful or expedient for the State and Church to be, as in America, disservered and divorced." Encyclical Letters of Pope Leo XIII, page 323.

10: Would you want a Catholic President when Catholicism affirms that the Constitution may be changed?
"Constitutions can be changed, and non-Catholic sects may decline to such a point that the political proscription of them may become feasible and expedient. What protection would they have against a Catholic State? ... It could not permit them to carry on general propaganda nor accord their organization certain privileges that had formerly been extended to all religious corporations, (Church and State by Monsignor J. A. Ryan and F. X. Millar Page 38, 1922; Imprimatur Patrick Hayes, Archbishop, N.Y.)

11. Would you want a Catholic President when Catholicism affirms that all protestants are heretics and here tics may be justly persecuted or put to death?
"Certainly the church does consider Protestants heretics . . . I do not doubt, if they were strong enough that the Catholic people-would hinder, even by death if necessary, the spread of such errors. Fr. Harney (Paulist) 1901, "Heretics mav be not only excommunicated, but also justlv put to death." St. Thomas, 11-11, Q xi, a 3, Catholic Encyclopedia, Vol. XIV. P. 768. "Heresy is an awful crime . . . those who start heresy are more guilty than they who are traitorous to the civil government. If the State has the right to punish treason with death, the principle is the same that concede to the spiritual authority the power of capital punishment over the arch-traitor to truth and divine revelation . . . A perfect society has the right to its existence . . . and the power of capital punishment is acknowledged for a perfect society . . . Now, the Catholic Church is a perfect society, and as such has the right and power to take means to safeguard its existence." Catholic Tablet, Brooklyn, N.Y., November 5, 1938.

12. Would you want a Catholic President when Catholicism opposes public schools? "The mission to educate belongs preeminently to the Church. 9

(Catholic) . . . the extent of the church's mission is such as to em. brace every nation without exception . . . and there is no power on earth that may lawfully oppose or stand in her way . . . For the mere fact that a school gives some religious instruction does not make it fit for Catholic students. To be this it is necessary that all teaching and the whole organization of the school, and teachers, syllabus and text-books in every branch be under the direction of the Church . . . and this in every grade of school, not only the elementary, but the intermediate and the higher institutions as well. . . . public or private, not merely in regard to this religious instruction they give, but in regard to every other branch of training."

Encyclical of Pope Pius XI on Education of Youth, December 31, 1929. (It should be observed that hundreds of public schools in America today have already been taken over and are being operated bv the Roman Catholic Church. (V.E.H) 13: Would you want a Catholic President when Catholicism boasts:
"Tell us that we think more of the Church (Catholic) than we do the United States: of course we do. Tell us that we are Catholics first and Americans or English afterwards; of course we are. Tell us, in the conflict between the Church and the civil government we take the side of the Catholic Church; of course we do. Why, if the government of the United States were at war with the church, we should say; 'To Hell with the government of the United States.' and if the church and all the governments of the world were at war, we would say: 'To Hell with the governments of the World.' They say we are Catholic first and Americans decidedly afterwards. There is no doubt about it. We are Catholics first, and we love the church more than we love our own children. "I love the people of America; I love the people of every nation . . . but let the governments of the world steer clear of the Catholic Church, let the emperors, let the kings, and the presidents not come into conflict with the head of the Catholic Church. Because the Catholic Church is everything to all Catholics of the world; they renounce all nationalities where there is a question of loyalty to her. And why is the Pope so strong? Why is the Pope such a tremendous power? Why, the Pope is the ruler of the world. Why? Because he is the ruler of the Catholics of the world and the Catholics of all the world would die for the rights of the Pone. He is the Head of the Church, and they would die for the Church . . . The Catholics of the world are Catholics first and always, they are Americans, they are Germans. etc., afterwards."

CATHOLIC CHURCH POLITICAL POWER Americans must not be duped into the Catholic molds of propaganda that the Catholic Church is non-political. The Roman Catholic Church is a sovereign power, having legislative, executive and judicial powers, including the power of coercion. The ruler of the Church, the Pope. claims sovereignty by divine right, and that he is the heir of a small state, the Vatican State, created by the Lateran Treaty of 1929 with Mussolini. This Vatican State is ruled by the same machinery that rules the religious aspect of the Church. The Vatican State includes 108-acre section of Rome, with extra territorial rights outside of Rome. This Catholic State has a full civil government with a flag, police force, courts and postage stamps. Currency, in the form of gold and silver coins, bearing the effigy of the pope, is issued and some 500 national citizens use Vatican passports when they wish to travel. The Catholic State, the Vatican, has armed guards, and, before 1870, it had a full-grown military establishment. According to the first article of its constitution, this Catholic State is a complete autocracy in which "the plenitude of legislative, executive and judicial power is vested in the Pope." How could any alert citizen consider the Catholic Church nonpolitical? The Hierarchy does not try to bide it! The National Catholic Register, November 22, 1959, in a front page feature article, gave the summary of the annual report of the National Catholic Welfare Conference, revealing, beyond any doubt, the aims of the hierarchy with reference to the political affairs in the United States. Quote: "The increased interest and activity of the Church in the U. S. within the areas of government, social wel 11

fare, education, family life, youth work, and other fields are highlighted in the annual report to the U. S. Bishops of the voluntary co-ordinating agency, the NCWC. "Presented at the hierarchy's annual general meeting, the reports of the organization's departments and bureaus touched upon almost all facets of the Church. "Of prime importance, the NCWC Legal Department noted, was legislation in such fields as education, taxation, obscenity, immigration, and litigation on a broad range of subjects involving the relationship of Church and State." Could there possibly be any doubt that the Roman Catholic Church is a political organization! In conferences she considers the "activities of the Church in the United States within the areas of government." Such terms as "Legal Department," "Legislation in education, taxation, immigration, and litigation involving relationship of Church and State," can leave no doubt as to the politics of Catholicism. PAPACY AND DICTATORS Our own generations have witnessed the alliance of the papacy with the dictators who sought to conquer the world by bloody conquest. The Kaiser, of World War I. stated, in his Memoirs, Translated by Thomas R. Yboarra. p. 211. Harper & Bros. 1922, that Pope Leo XIII declared to him that, bv war, if necessary, the "Holy Roman Empire should be restored," and to this end "Germany must become the Sword of the Catholic Church." The Kaiser's own words were: "It was of interest to me that the Pope said unto me on this occasion that Germany must become the sword of the Catholic Church. I remarked that the old Roman Empire of the German nation no longer existed, and that conditions had changed. But he stuck to his words." 12

The famous concordant with the whole of Hitler's Germany in 1933 was a definite alliance of the Papacy in the Vatican and Hitlerism.

Hitler was a product of the Catholic Church. He never renounced the Catholic faith, nor condemned the politi-cal aims and aspirations of the Catholic Church. Of his membership in the Catholic Church, he said. "This supplied me with the best opportunity to steep myself in the solemn magnificence of the brilliant feasts of the Church" Mein Kampf. p. 4. In Hitler's Mein Kampf he approves Catholicism's opposition to Protestantism, the infallibility of Catholic dogmas, Catholicism's intolerance toward education, the necessity of blind faith, and the infallibility of the pope. (Mein Kampf, p 293, p 385, p 417, p 507, p 513) In his admiration of the Catholic Church, Hitler prophetically declared: "Thus the Catholic Church is more secure than ever. It can be predicted that, as passing phenomena vanish away, she will remain as a beacon light amid the vanish ing elements, attracting blind adherents in ever-increas ing numbers." It should be remembered that a Catholic priest, "Father Staempfle" actually wrote Mein Kampf. The collusion between the Catholic Church, Hitler, Mussolini, and Franco, now on the pages of history, is in evidence beyond doubt. Can we so easily forget some of the Headlines of the past? The official Catholic biographer of Pius XII, Kees Van Hoek, declared, of the pope, "has always been known for ihis strong German leanings." Article 16 of the concordant between Hitler and the Vatican gives the oath that all German Bishops were forced to take before the Reichstatthalter: "I swear before God and upon the Holy Gospels and promise, as becomes a bishop, to be loyal to the German Reich and the State. I swear and promise to respect the constitutional Government and to have it respected by my clergy." 14

Shortly after this concordant signed by Cardinal Pa-celli, later Pope Pius XII, and Catholic Frans von Papen, Cardinal Bertram of Berlin wrote the following declaration to Hitler: "The Episcopate of all German diocese, as shown by its statements to the public, was glad to express, as soon as it was possible after the recent change in the political situation through the declarations of Your Excellency, its sincere readiness to cooperate to the best of its ability with the new government which has proclaimed as its goal to promote Christian education, to wage war against Godlessness and immorality, to strengthen the spirit of sacrifice for the common good, and to promote the rights of the Church." The Catholic (London) Universe, Aug. 18, 1933. Fritz Thyssen, a rich industrialist, who helped finance Hitler (Thyssen's I Paid Hitler, 1941), testified, in the Swiss Arbeiterzeitung, 1940, entitled: "PIUS XII, AS NUNCIO, BROUGHT HITLER TO POWER," of the Hitler-Vatican Plan. He declared: "The idea, was to have a sort of Christian Corporate State organized according to classes, which would be supported by the Churches in the West by the Catholics, and in the East by the Protestant and by the Army." CATHOLIC STATE SOVEREIGN POWER The well known Lateran Treaty of 1929 between the Vatican and Dictator Mussolini was designed for intolerant world domination by the Catholic Church. This concordant between the pope and Fascist dictator, Mussolini, was actually a collaboration with the Nazi-Fascist dictators. A deal was made between the Catholic Church and the dictators, designed to become the world rulers. Among the royalties received from Mussolini by the Catholic Church were 750 million lire in cash, one billion lire in 'Fascist government stock, a 108-acre section, carved out of the heart of Italy, near Rome, with extra territorial rights outside Rome, the Catholic Church to be the sole Church of the Fascist State, the pope the ruler of the Church by divine right and the heir and head of the Vatican State, the Vatican State being ruled by the same head that rules the Catholic Church, "the plenitude of legislative, executive and judicial power vested in the Pope." It can not be denied that the Catholic Church is a Sovereign Power, maintaining legislative, executive, and judicial powers, including the power of coercion. Some fifty... nations maintain representatives in the Vatican and many American-Catholics are determined once again to send an American representative to the Vatican, which is in violation of the Constitution of the United States government. The pope maintains the largest court palace in the world where he confers titles of nobility, with such papal nobles being entitled to wear uniforms and swords. The Catholic Vatican State has an active diplomatic corps, headed by the Secretary of State. How could any true American citizen swear allegiance to this foreign Vatican-Catholic State? Does America want the White House to be under control of the Vatican in Rome? If America does not open her eyes to the truth that the Roman Catholic Church is a dominant, political power 18

the day may come when the White House is no longer American, but Roman, and our long cherished American freedoms and liberties will have vanished away! CONCORDAT WITH CATHOLIC SPAIN Catholic Spain is an ideal Catholic State, according to Pope Pius XII and the Catholic Church. In 1936 Franco rebelled 'against the democratic government, then in power, which dared to abolish the tax exemptions for the vast domains of the pope. The papacy supported Franco with power and millions of dollars, for the con-quest. Thousands were murdered and tortured. The Catholic priests took active part in the bloody battles, murdering their own fellow-Catholic church members because the Pope had given orders. Zacarias P. Carles, director of Spanish Christian Mission, relating his experiences in Madrid when the Franco rebellion began in 1936, declared: .
"In July, 1936, I was living in Madrid. This was the month in which our so-called tragic Spanish war started. On the very first day I went to the British and Foreign Bible Society, of which I was the assistant superintendent. While going to my office I had to pass by a convent. When I was in front of it, I had to hide myself, since from the windows of the Roman church building priests and others with machine-guns were fighting against the passers-by. Many of them were killed by the priests. When men were able to come near the church, it was set on fire and the priests, still wearing their clerical robes, were captured, carrying their machine guns with them. Then they were shot. They were killed, not because they were priests, but because they had been murdering their fellow citizens. "I knew at once that our war had been started with the help of the Vatican. Even the Pope sent $3,000,000 to help Franco. Many Spaniards hate the Roman church on account of her association with the bloody Spanish war. Some Spaniards even hate God, since what they know of God they know only through the Roman church." End of quotation.

FREEDOM OF WORSHIP PROHIBITED IN SPAIN The Concordat between Spain and the Vatican reserves exclusive rights for the Roman Catholic Church, to the exclusion of all other religions. The Constitution states, "No public ceremonies or manifestations will be permitted in any religion other that the Catholic religion." Protestants in Spain can not have churches. They can neither advertise nor hold public religious services. Even if as many as five people gather together in their own private home to worship, if not Catholics, they are subject to arrest! What does the pope think of Catholic Spain? Pope Pius XII conferred on Generalissimo Franco the highest secular decoration bestowed by the Vatican, the "Supreme Order of Christ," December 21, 1953. The democratic government in Spain was overthrown, thousands murdered, thousands subdued to obey the pope in Rome, and the Catholic Church given complete control, without reservation. The Pope's compliment, the highest secular decoration possible by the Vatican! Do you want a Concordat between the Vatican and Washington? Roman Catholicism parades in a cloak of religion, as a religo-political power, seeking to destroy our free institutions in America! CATHOLIC INTOLERANCE PERSECUTION The Christian Science Monitor, Nov. 12, 1950, states, "In Da Aguado Cesanare (Colombia), Protestant Church schools and missions of the missionary confiscated. In the same district, two other chapels and eight churches bombed or otherwise damaged." The Monitor further states, "On orders of the mayor, all Protestants at Toribio Cauca (Colombia), were rounded up, arrested, their Bibles destroyed, and they were forced to sign, under threat of death, a renunciation of Protestantism." In this South American country of Colombia thousands have been murdered who were opposed to Catholicism. 20
