Name: W20 Range Designer: Steel Design Team Manufacturer: Steel Design Windows & Doors When: 1980

Country: Australia How: The extremely versatile hot rolled W20 range of sections from Steel Design has been in production for over 50 years and has a proven record of durability with excellent design potential. Very popular with planners and architects the Steel Design W20 range is ideal for your construction needs if you are planning on single glazing or double glazing up to 18mm thick. The Steel Design W20 range is also the best suited range for replacing heritage steel doors, as they feature a very slender profile and an intermediate glazing bar at only 19.5mm visible face which match traditional Georgian or art deco era steel windows and doors in Australia. All glazing beading can be internal or external. Within the Steel Design W20 range elaborate composite windows are fashioned using mullions and transoms to join single units together and tubular, Rectangular or square hollow sections and flat steel profiles can be added for strength or as a feature. All W20 products, including any steel attachments undergo Steel Design's complete corrosion protection process including hot dip galvanised to AS/NZS 4680.

Name: Origami-inspired Prototyping Designer: Otherlab Development Team Manufacturer: OtherLab Date: 2012 Country: California, USA How: The Coherent MetaBeam 400 (Coherent, Santa Clara, Calif.) used by Otherlab mates a 400-W, sealed carbon dioxide laser with a motion system and control electronics. This platform can process most plastics up to about 1.25 in thick and metals of up to about 0.125 in thick, over a 4 ft by 4 ft working area. Importantly, it can cut with a dimensional precision of up to 0.001 in, at speeds up to 2,000 in/min. Cutting patterns are created in SolidWorks or some other application that produces files in DXF, DWG, AI, HPGL, Gerber, JPG, BMP, or TIF format. Otherlab engages in a very diverse range of development tasks; the sealed carbon dioxide laser is capable of processing metals, such as mild steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. The long-wave infrared output (10.6-m wavelength) of the carbon dioxide laser is also strongly absorbed by most organic materials, enabling processing of many plastics, wood, leather, paper, thin films, and foils. Most other industrial laser types, such as fiber lasers or Nd:YAG lasers, output in the near infrared (around 1 m). Most organic materials (especially many transparent plastics) dont absorb well at this wavelength, making it difficult to process them with these other lasers. Otherlab also regularly uses the laser machine to cut metal. A prototype bicycle frame was constructed of several pieces of 16-gauge mild steel. When welded together, these thin pieces curved out of their flat plane to form a rigid, but light, 3D structure. Small locating notches were machined into the parts to ensure the required submillimeter dimensional accuracy when assembling and welding these pieces.

W40 Range Steel Design Team Steel Design Windows & Doors 1990 Australia

Designed in the 1990s as an evolutionary development from W20, W40 offers continuity of style with the same casement perimeter sightlines as W20, but the 45mm deep profiles to permit 20mm double glazing. As most Australian applications have wind loading requirements within the capacity of 4mm glass, the benefits of higher insulation values from a 12mm air space are available. The methods of glazing permit the ventilation and drainage of the glass unit perimeter and gasket glazing can be available. The introduction of the dual weather seals has gone a long way towards the improvements that have been made. Extensive laboratory testing was undertaken throughout all stages of development and improvements in the resistance to air and water penetration are the result. All glazing beading can be internal or external.Within the Steel Design W40 range elaborate composite windows are fashioned using mullions and transoms to join single units together and tubular, rectangular or square hollow sections and flat steel profiles can be added for strength or as a feature. In addition to improved thermal performance, weather tightness is significantly enhanced and fittings can be less obtrusive with the availability of variable geometry hinges, friction pivots and multipoint locking cremone bolts concealed within the profiles. All W40 profiles, including any steel attachments undergo Steel Design's complete corrosion protection process including hot dip galvanised to AS/NZS 4680.
