Dear friends, I want to talk about ghati lagna in my first technical post on this list.

INTRODU TION The classic !"rihat #arasara $ora %astra! written by %age #arasara millennia ago is considered to be the most authentic te&t in 'edic astrology. In that te&t, %age #arasara defined some special lagnas (e.g. hora lagna and ghati lagna). $e also mentioned that !bha*a chakra! (house chart) can be prepared by taking these special lagnas as the first house, +ust like in the case of lagna. $e did not mention more on the use of these special lagnas, but he defined them and mentioned the abo*e (that houses can be found taking these special lagnas as the first house) *ery early in the book, making one think that these are *ery basic and important concepts. ,any contemporary 'edic astrologers do not employ special lagnas, but I found *ery interesting correlations when I used them. O,#UT-TION .ind the time of sunrise on the day of birth. There is a contro*ersy regarding whether sun/s center should be on the eastern hori0on or the upper tip of the *isual disk representing %un, at the time of sunrise. I still need to do more research on this, but I use the upper tip (not center) and that/s what I recommend. .ind %un/s longitude at the time of sunrise. 1hatilagna (denoted by 12 in the rest of this article) will be at that position at the time of sunrise and it will mo*e at the rate of 34 degrees per 56 minutes. .ind the minutes elapsed since sunrise. ,ultiply that number with 7 and di*ide it by 6. The result gi*es the mo*ement of 12 since sunrise, in degrees. -dd it to %un/s longitude at sunrise (in degrees) and e&punge multiples of 384 degrees. The result is the longitude of 12. 9ou can find its position in all di*isional charts, +ust like for planets and normal lagna. U%: 1hatilagna can be used as lagna in all charts. 2agna stands for physical self and matters of rele*ance to physical self in the physical world. -rudha lagna stands for the manifestation of self in the material world and it deals with materialistic things to a large e&tent. 1hatilagna stands for self, with stress on achie*ements, fame, power and authority. ;e ha*e to +udiciously use all these lagnas. -N :<-,#2: ;hen I stood first in my state with the record score of the decade in higher secondary school e&ams, I was running Taurus dasa, Taurus antardasa as per =alachakra dasa. .or

In my D>56 chart, lagna is in 1emini. %o Taurus is ?5th. ;hy did Taurus dasa bring me academic distinction@@ One can say that 2ibra, twin of Taurus, is the 7th house (which stands for distinction, fame and success in competition) and so Taurus ga*e its result. That/s true, but there is a more compelling reason. 1hatilagna in my D>56 is in apricorn. Taurus is the 7th from itA "eing the 7th from 12, which is more important than normal lagna when dealing with achie*ements, Taurus ga*e academic achie*ementsA $owe*er, being the ?5th from lagna (physical self), it has to gi*e the results of ?5th house in physical terms. "ut, remember, we are dealing with D>56 here, the chart of learning and education. %o Taurus (?5th house with lord in the Bth from lagna) dasa and antardasa ga*e a big change of place for education. In the same antardasa, I was selected in the entrance e&am of IIT (Indian Institute of Technology) and went to ,adras. To sum upC Taurus is the ?5th from lagna (physical self) and its lord occupies Bth (in D> 56, the chart of education). %o Taurus dasa and antardasa resulted in a change of place (for education). $owe*er,from ghatilagna, Taurus is the 7th house and its lord occupies 5nd and it resulted in success in competition and academic distinction (which are better represented in the bha*a chakra of 12 rather than that of the normal lagna). ;ith e&perience, you may appreciate the resolution gi*en by *arious di*isional charts and *arious lagnas. :ach chart has a purpose and each lagna has a purpose. 2ife is *ery complicated > it has many many degrees of freedom. The degrees of freedom a*ailable with +ust the rasi chart and normal lagna are insufficient to model life. ;e need all these charts and lagnas to model life. -NOT$:R :<-,#2: -mitabh "achchan, India/s most successful film star, has lagna in rasi chart in -Duarius. ,ars owns ?4th and he occupies Eth. It doesn/t suggest a career in films. #arasara prescribed dasamsa (?4th di*isional chart, denoted by D>?4) for profession and achie*ements. In D>?4, "achchan has #isces lagna and ,ercury and ,ars in ?4th. It again doesn/t strongly suggest a career in films. Now let us look at ghatilagna in D>?4. 1hatilagna in D>?4 is in apricorn and its lord %aturn aspects it from ancer. ,oon occupies 12. %amasaptaka of ?st and Fth lords from 12 suggests a popular person, especially because %aturn (significator of popularity among masses) is in*ol*ed. Now look at the ?4th from 12. It is 2ibra and it is occupied by 'enus and Rahu. %o 'enus causes a powerful ,ala*ya yoga from 12 ('enus is in a Duadrant in his moolatrikona). This strong 'enusian influence on the ?4th from 12 suggests a popular career in entertainment. 'enus is in a lunar constellation and that adds to it. Rahu/s presence with 'enus may be a hint at the angry young man image he had and the hard roles he played.

,ercury is in ?4th in D>?4, but ,ercury/s 'imsottari dasa took his career to lows. ;hy@@ "ecause ,ercury is in the ?5th from 12 in D>?4A ON 2U%ION I suggest that ghatilagna should be used along with lagna, atleast in rasi chart, D>?4 chart and D>56 chart. -ncient Indian sages were brilliant and they ga*e us all these tools. In the last few centuries, se*eral of these tools got lost.
