NEW YORKS CUOMO OPENS ELECTION YEAR WITH A ROAR, QUINNIPIAC UNIVERSITY POLL FINDS; 2-1 APPROVAL AND HUGE LEAD OVER UNKNOWN CONTENDER
New York State Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who saw his job approval rating drop in Quinnipiac University polls in the first six months of the year, opens his reelection bid with a 62 25 percent approval rating today. This compares to a 53 30 percent approval rating, his lowest ever, in a June 5 survey by the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University. Cuomos approval is up in every region, to 53 37 percent upstate, 62 23 percent in the suburbs and 71 13 percent in New York City. Republicans go from a negative 37 49 percent June 5 to a positive 50 37 percent today. Republican support was key to Cuomos +70 approval ratings during his first two years in office. In an early look at the 2014 governors race, Cuomo tops Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino, a possible Republican challenger, 56 25 percent. Astorino leads 62 23 percent among Republicans while Cuomo takes every other party, age, gender, income and regional group. Gov. Andrew Cuomo has much for which to be thankful. The only thing better than lots of opponents is an unknown opponent. The Democratic governor scores a demographic sweep, except among Republicans, said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. At mid-year, Cuomo was coming off a generally unsatisfying legislative session. His news-making plan to make Roe v Wade part of state law and his anti-corruption efforts didnt go anywhere. Now his job approval as he heads into the election year is healthy and a big majority of New Yorkers think he deserves a second term. -more-

Quinnipiac University Poll/November 26, 2013 page 2 New York State voters say 59 31 percent that Cuomo deserves to be reelected. That includes 81 percent of Democrats, 52 percent of independent voters and 40 percent of Republicans. Cuomo gets a 55 27 percent favorability rating. For Astorino, 84 percent of voters dont know enough to form an opinion. President Obamas Approval President Barack Obama gets a split 47 49 percent job approval rating, near his all-time New York State low of 45 49 percent in an August 12, 2011, Quinnipiac University poll. The president is down 13 87 percent among Republicans and 35 61 percent among independent voters, while Democrats approve 81 15 percent. There is a large gender gap as women approve 51 45 percent while men give a negative 42 54 percent score. Since the healthcare website collapse, President Barack Obama has been going down, down, down in Quinnipiac University polls nationally and in the states. Now hes even struggling to stay above water in true-blue New York, Carroll said. New York State voters approve 60 30 percent of the job U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer is doing and give U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand a 57 24 percent job approval. A total of 50 percent of voters are very satisfied or somewhat satisfied with the way things are going in the Empire State today, while 50 percent are somewhat dissatisfied or very dissatisfied. From November 20 24, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,337 New York State voters with a margin of error of +/- 2.7 percentage points. Live interviewers call land lines and cell phones. The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida, Iowa, Ohio, Virginia, Colorado and the nation as a public service and for research.
