INORGANIC CHEMISTRY SYLLABUS CHEM 107 - COURSE CODE 40720 eee.uci.edu/13f/40720 Fall Quarter 2013 Instructor: Prof.

Matt Law TAs: Lindsay Reinstatler Sam Mann (Remove padlocks to email us.) TEXTBOOK Inorganic Chemistry, 5th Edition by Miessler, Fischer, and Tarr (ISBN 0-321-811054). Older editions are available and may be less expensive to obtain, but you are on your own to translate any differences between the various editions of the book. There are many other excellent inorganic chemistry textbooks. Listed below are a few that you may find useful since they cover the material in greater depth than does the required text.
Gispert, JR; Coordination Chemistry. ISBN 978-3-527-31802-5. Cotton, FA; Wilkinson, G; Murillo, C; Bochmann, M; Advanced Inorganic Chemistry, 6th ed. ISBN 0-471-19957-5. Collman, JP; Hegedus, LS; Norton, JR; Finke, RG; Principles and Applications of Organotransition Metal Chemistry. ISBN 0-935702-51-2. Lippard, SJ; Berg, JM; Principles of Bioinorganic Chemistry. ISBN 0-935702-72-5.

LECTURES MWF 9:00-9:50 am, Social Sciences Hall 100. I will start on time. Be sure to give yourself enough time to get to class before 9:00. If you arrive < 10 minutes late, quietly enter the back of the room and find a seat without disturbing other students. If you are more than 10 minutes late, please skip class that day. Lectures will cover Chapters 4-12 of the textbook. This is a very ambitious schedule. The lectures will be fast paced so you will get the most out of them if you read the chapters in Miessler and Tarr before they are covered in lecture. Studying the book is one of the keys to success in this class. Chapters 1-3 of the book are introductory material that is mainly a review of Chem 1. Chapters 1-3 will not be covered in class; however, you still are responsible for mastery of the material in these chapters. In this course, I will assume that you mastered and remember the material you learned in both the General (Chem 1) and Organic (Chem 51) Chemistry sequences.

LECTURE NOTES PDF versions of the lecture slides will be posted to the class website before or just after each lecture to facilitate your in-class note taking and after-class studying. Since this is the first time I have taught Chem 107, the finished slides will sometimes not be available until just after class please check the class website for the latest (and refresh your browser as needed). Also, do not make the mistake of thinking you can skip lecture just because you can download the slides. HOMEWORK Suggested problems from the 5th Edition will be assigned and answer keys will be posted, but homework will not be collected or graded. The problems are meant to help you learn the material, check your understanding, and prepare for the exams. They may also be reviewed during discussion sections. In addition to these problems, you are strongly encouraged to work more problems from the back of each chapter as you prepare for the exams. DISCUSSION SECTIONS Discussion sections begin the week of 9/30/13 according to the following schedule:

OFFICE HOURS Office hours are valuable time. Please come prepared with specific and focused questions so that we can use the time efficiently. Here is the tentative arrangement for this quarter: EXAMS Our exams will be held in the lecture classroom, SSH 100. We will have a total of three exams: Midterm I (50 min, 9:00 am-9:50 am, 25% of overall grade) Mon. 10/21/13. Midterm II (50 min, 9:00 am-9:50 am, 35% of overall grade) Fri. 11/15/13. Final Exam (120 min, 8:00 am-10:00 am, 40% of overall grade) Wed. 12/11/13. Prof. Laws office hours are Weds 3-4 pm in his office, Natural Sciences 2, Room 2127. Lindsay will be available Thurs 2-3p in Natural Sciences 1, Room 3213. Sam will be available Tues 10:30-11:30a in 3213 NS 1. You can also make an appointment to see either of us at some other convenient time. Please dont wait until right before an exam.

The exams are cumulative and as such are weighted differently. You must take the regularly scheduled exams! There are no makeup exams. If you will be away on an official University activity, you should notify me well in advance (at least two weeks) and be prepared to take the exam early. If you miss an exam for an approved reason, at Prof. Laws discretion the weighting of the final exam may be increased to make up for the missed exam (i.e., if you missed Midterm Exam I for an approved reason, the Final Exam would count for 65% of your grade). There is no extra credit in this class. To each exam, bring a calculator that works, a backup calculator if you might need it, and several #2 pencils and pens. All the exams are closed book, closed notes. I supply relevant formulas and a periodic table on each exam. To receive full credit on any exam problem, you must both show your work and get the correct answer (with correct units and significant figures). If I make any kind of serious mistake on an exam, I will always give everyone full credit for that problem or sub-problem. On all other problems, if you get the correct answer, with your work shown, you get full credit. If your answer is incorrect, even by a minor numerical mistake, then you may get half credit (if you show your work) or no credit. The exam problems are straightforward, but you have to work the problems out carefully, and check your work.

EXAM PICK UP All exams will be scanned and returned to you in Portable Document Format (pdf) files. You will receive an automatic notice from me via EEE that your exam is ready to peruse. We do not have any control over how rapidly the exams are returned. They are usually graded within 3-4 business days (i.e., Wed-Thurs for an exam held the previous Friday). EXAM REGRADING Re-grades will only be performed in carefully documented situations. If you believe there has been an error in the grading of your exam, you must send one of us a written note explaining the error within one week of receiving the graded exam. Exams will be scanned and returned to you as PDF files via EEE. COURSE EVALUATION This course will be evaluated online using the Standardized Teaching Evaluation Form (STEF) that appears in the Schedule of Classes. Use the evaluation to tell us what you found helpful or unhelpful, and why. Your feedback is crucial to help improve the course. ACADEMIC DISHONESTY I have zero tolerance for academic dishonesty. Any student caught cheating on an exam will be rewarded with an F for the course and a letter from me in his/her permanent file explaining the grade. Hardcore cheating may result in expulsion from the University. Please see UCIs policy on academic honesty: http://www.editor.uci.edu/catalogue/appx/appx.2.htm. REGISTRATION AND ENROLLMENT QUESTIONS
