outlook
Key changes in this forecast:
> Stronger uptake of smartphone
1
and LTE
subscriptions than in previous forecast
> Notable increase in the number of smartphone
subscriptions in the APAC and MEA regions
> LTE subscriptions forecast has increased
from 1.6 to 2 billion in 2018
By Q1 2013, total mobile subscriptions exceeded
6.4 billion. By the end of 2018, they are expected
to reach 9.1 billion.
Global mobile broadband subscriptions reached
around 1.7 billion in Q1 2013, and are predicted
to reach 7 billion in 2018. The majority of mobile
broadband devices are, and will continue to
be, smartphones. Mobile broadband will gain a
larger share of total broadband subscriptions in
many markets, complementing xDSL in certain
segments and replacing it in others. Mobile
broadband also includes some feature phones.
Mobile devices
Mobile subscriptions are increasing for PCs,
mobile routers and tablets that use larger screen
sizes. They are expected to grow from 300 million
in 2012 to around 850 million in 2018, exceeding
the number of xed broadband subscriptions.
Total smartphone subscriptions reached 1.2 billion
at the end of 2012 and are expected to grow to
4.5 billion in 2018. Today the majority of mobile
subscriptions are for basic phones.
Smartphone penetration will increase rapidly, while
it is estimated that subscriptions for basic phones
will remain high, slowly declining from around 5
billion today, to around 4 billion in 2018. This is
because a large part of the growth in subscriber
numbers will come from the lower-end
phone segment.

Subscriptions are dened by the most advanced technology that
the mobile phone and network are capable of. Lack of 3G/4G
coverage may connect users to 2G networks (GSM, CDMA1X).
Regional differences will be large. In
2018 almost all handsets in Western
Europe and North America will be
smartphones, compared to 40-50
percent of handset subscriptions in
the Middle East and Africa and
Asia Pacic regions.
Mobile technology
Figure 5 illustrates reported
mobile subscriptions categorized
by technology. Subscriptions are
dened by the most advanced
technology that the mobile phone
and network are capable of.
LTE is currently being deployed and
built-out in all regions and will reach
around 2 billion subscriptions in 2018.
These subscriptions will represent the
high-end share of the total subscriber
base by 2018. Rapid migration to
more advanced technologies in
developed countries means global
GSM/EDGE-only subscription
numbers will decline after 2012-2013.
Globally, GSM/EDGE will continue to
lead in terms of subscription numbers
until the latter years of the forecast
period. This is because new, less
afuent users entering networks in
growing markets will be likely to use
the cheapest mobile phones and
subscriptions available. In addition,
it takes time for the installed base of
phones to be upgraded.
Regional growth
Figure 6 illustrates regional mobile subscriptions up until the end of 2018 and shows continued growth.
In APAC this process is driven by new subscribers, whereas in North America, it is based on increasing
the number of subscriptions per individual for example, adding a tablet.
The number of xed broadband users is at least three times the
number of xed broadband connections, due to multiple usage in
households, enterprises and public access spots. This is the opposite
of the mobile phone situation, where subscription numbers exceed
user numbers. In the latter years of the forecasting period, it is likely
that the usage trend for mobile PCs will be similar to xed broadband
usage today, with several users per subscription. This is especially
the case in developing markets where mobile access will be the
main source of internet connection.

The APT700 FDD band plan (698-806 MHz) represents a major opportunity for global spectrum
harmonization for LTE systems, paving the way for ensuring the greatest economies of scale for
devices and capacity for mobile broadband, and for roaming

Adoption of the APT700 band plan by a growing number of countries across the APAC and Latin
America regions confirms the strong momentum

The FDD plan (2 x 45 MHz plus guard band: 3GPP band 28) has attracted the most support

Supporting devices ecosystem for APT700 needs to be developed

Mobile HD Voice: Global Update report

Table 1: 79 mobile HD voice (W-AMR) service launches
HSPA networks except where stated
GSA July 10, 2013

Network aspects
The voice payload for transport in the core network is usually PCM-
coded at 64 kbit/s (ITU-T Rec. G.711). Narrowband AMR is transcoded
to/from PCM but degrades voice quality, adding signal processing
complexity. Analog PCM-based transport cannot be used with W-AMR
as G.711 only applies to narrowband voice. W-AMR must be based on
one of two complementary 3GPP standards: tandem-free operation
(TFO) or transcoder-free operation (TrFO). Introduction of W-AMR into
GSM systems requires TFO, which is part of 3GPP GERAN, which
does not require substantial modification of the core network. W-AMR
and TFO can also be introduced into UMTS. A better option however,
is to use the recommended TrFO. The combination of TFO and TrFO
enables W-AMR calls between all types of 3GPP mobile devices (i.e.
GSM/EDGE and UMTS/WCDMA-HSPA).

Voice for LTE users
LTE systems are all-IP, optimized for data transfer and do not have
circuit switched capability as used on previous technologies for voice
and SMS services. Since voice and SMS generate the majority of
operator revenues globally, voice service is needed for LTE users.
With VoLTE (Voice over LTE: GSMA spec. VoLTE IR.92), subscribers
can use HD voice and other new richer communication services with
LTE smartphones. VoLTE provides voice service on an all-IP network
in a shared resource environment. The operator must have an IMS
core network and the LTE radio access network and Evolved Packet
Core must also support VoLTE, typically enabled by software upgrade.

VoLTE technology is maturing. SK Telecom confirmed 4.5 million
VoLTE subscribers by end May 2013.

More than a quarter of a million files (reports, information
papers, Members papers, etc.) were downloaded in 1 year from
the GSA website www.gsacom.com
The most downloaded resources over the past year were GSAs Evolution to LTE and Status of the LTE Ecosystem reports, which
provide authoritative updates and analysis on network deployments and user devices respectively, and the Mobile Broadband market
update presentations. Technology neutrality including spectrum refarming (e.g. 900 MHz and 1800 MHz bands) are key themes for GSA
and are reflected in several deliverables. Information about the spectrum used for LTE deployments, and subscriptions growth were
highly requested. The development of HD voice services on mobile networks, enabled by W-AMR technology, is another popular topic
for which GSA provides regular status reports.

The website also provides a valuable global distribution and promotion channel to key industry audiences for GSA member companies,
who are able to reach existing and potential customers, partners and policy-makers. Materials from GSA member companies currently
represent around 10% of monthly downloads.
