Late start, youth will challenge Raiders

By KEVIN WANNEMACHER
Sportswriter
HAVILAND Coming off of an out-
standing football season, Wayne Trace will
have to overcome a late start as the Raiders
look to mix youth and inexperience with
veterans returning in the upcoming year.
The red, white and blue do bring back
four letter winners from a squad that was
20-3 a year ago. However, the Raiders also
have to overcome the loss of 40 points from
that squad on a team that averaged only 60
a contest.
Head coach Jim Linder returns for his
sixth season at the helm of the program
with a team that has high hopes but also has
concerns.
Three of the top four returnees enjoyed
success as part of the football team and will
look to carry that success over to the hard-
wood.
After leading the football team at quarter-
back, senior guard Colby Speice (6-3)
comes back at the point for Wayne Trace
after posting seven points a night last year
while dishing out 78 assists and recording
50 steals.
Senior forward Devin Wenzlick (6-2)
also comes back following a season that
saw him chip in three points and three
boards per game.
Junior Jake Arend (6-2) posted 20 steals
and contributed two points and two caroms
a night. Junior Corbin Linder (6-0) also
returns, scoring 11.2 points a season ago
while hitting 62 treys and adding 38 assists
and 41 steals.
We do have a good nucleus back, noted
Linder, who is 51-61 at the helm of the
Raiders. We are going to be young and
inexperienced at some spots and feature
experience and be veterans at others. The

key is being able to mix those things
together and work together as a team for 32
minutes.
Four newcomers to the varsity level are
going to be counted on to provide key min-
utes for Wayne Trace.
Senior forwards Brock Worden (6-1) and
T.J. Blackmore (6-4) move up from the jun-
ior varsity level as does junior guard/for-
ward David Sinn (6-5). Freshman guard
Ethan Linder (6-2) also will see playing
time at the varsity level.
A big concern is how long it takes us to
get our basketball legs, commented the
Raider head coach. Another area is our
post players and how quickly they adapt to
the varsity game. We should be able to be
physical but we have to do it in a smart
way.
We had a very good summer season,
continued Linder. This group really jelled
together very well and the chemistry was
very good. I think once we get past the tran-
sition from football to basketball that this
team has a lot of potential.
Linder does feel though that the Raiders
are very deep and that should allow Wayne
Trace to push the tempo offensively.
When we have the ball, we want to get
out and go, Linder added. We feel like we
have a group of kids that are very good
together and we can play any of them at
anytime. This group is a very close group
and they like to run. We are hopeful that our
depth is able to wear teams down.
We are behind the eight ball a little bit
with the football teams success but its
something we have to overcome, said the
Raider head coach. Our quickness will
allow us to be very aggressive and we want
to control the tempo. We have to use our
depth to our advantage.
Defensively, the red, white and blue will
feature primarily a man-to-man squad.
Wayne Trace could also mix in some zone
defenses as well.
As far as the league goes, Linder feels
Tinora and Edgerton will both be very good
while Ayersville should be much improved.
The Raider head coach is hopeful that
Wayne Trace is in the mix as well.
Edgerton has some very good players
back from a team that was the league run-
ner-ups, concluded Linder. Tinora was
very good last year and they return key
players as well. Ayersville has a nice group
of kids too. Hopefully we fall somewhere in
the race as well. It should be a very good
race for the league title.

Lady Raiders looking for fresh start
By KEVIN WANNEMACHER
Sportswriter
HAVILAND Lots of new faces will dot
the roster of the Wayne Trace Lady Raider bas-
ketball team, starting at the top as Bethany
Hughes takes over the reins of the red, white
and blue.
Hughes enters her fifth season as a basket-
ball coach but her first as a head coach with an
inexperienced squad. The new head coach is a
former guard at Wayne Trace and also played
collegiately at Mount Vernon Nazarene
University.
The Lady Raiders bring back five players
who played in at least 18 games a year ago, but
Wayne Trace does face some key questions
entering the campaign.
and blue averaged 25 turnovers a
game last season and that has to improve to
become more competitive.
We have worked a lot on fundamentals this
year, noted the first year head coach. Our
ball handling has gotten much better but we
also still have a lot of improvement that we can
make yet.
Wayne Trace also must do a better job of
putting up points when the opportunities arise.
One thing this year is we want to push the
ball up and down the floor as much as we can
and hopefully that leads to quality scoring
chances for us, commented Hughes. We
have size which should allow us to be able to
rebound the basketball and we need to follow
that up by running the floor effectively.
A trio of seniors lead the list of returnees for
Wayne Trace.
Forwards Sylvia Young (6-3) and Lauren
Speice (5-11) along with guard/forward
Brenda Feasby (5-9) all will be asked to step
up their roles this year.
Weve got a good group of kids back that
have been very receptive to what we are trying
to do and they have worked extremely hard,
Hughes continued. They have done a great
job of catching on to what we are trying to
implement so far.
Young averaged six points and four
rebounds a contest last year while Feasby
chipped in four points and three caroms while
posting 42 steals. Speice, who suffered a sea-
son-ending knee injury in the fifth game last
year, posted eight points and eight rebounds a
night in the limited action.
Senior guard Madison Poling (5-6) also
comes back for the red, white and blue. Poling
played in 18 games a year ago and will be
asked to step into the point guard slot this sea-
son. Sophomore Shayna Temple (5-10), who
chipped in four points and four boards per
game last year, also will see action at the point.
Both Madi and Shayna will serve as point
guards for us, Hughes noted. They have
improved their skills but they also know they

HAVILAND With four district qualifiers
returning, the Wayne Trace wrestling team
carries high expectations into the 2013-14
season.
The red, white and blue brings back 10 kids
who posted double digits in victories last year
and six that recorded at least 20 wins on the
season.
Topping the list of returnees is sophomore
George Clemens at 106, who was 46-3 a year
ago and set school records for consecutive
victories (43), most wins in a season and best
season winning percentage.
Junior Tyler Showalter also comes back fol-
lowing a year that saw him post a 37-12
record to go along with breaking the school
record for takedowns in a season with 88.
Showalter will be in the 138 pound weight
class.
Senior Dustin Taylor, at 113, was 33-15 as a
junior and took sectional runner-up honors.
Other top grapplers coming back for the
Raiders include juniors Matt Baxter (120),
Zaine Cotterman (132), Jacob Dingus (145),
Josh Reel (152), Riley Moore (220), Daron
Showalter (182) and Justin Pierce (195).
We have a lot of wrestlers with a lot of
experience returning, noted Raider head
coach George Clemens. We are returning
four district qualifiers and a pair of state qual-
ifiers with several others who are very talent-
ed as well.
Wayne Trace also brings in a talented fresh-
man class, according to Clemens.
Our freshman group has shown a lot of
promise, continued the Raider head coach.
Newcomers at the ninth grade level include
Ruger Goeltzenleuchter, Caleb Schultz, Rian
James, Brandon Laney, Chance Elliott and
Sam Nickols.
Senior Jake Gerber is out for the first time
as well for Wayne Trace and is joined by sen-
ior Jacob Schlegel.
Junior Carl Elliott returns as well after win-
ning seven times last season.
Bottom line is if all of the kids come out
and stay healthy, we should be a very compet-
itive team, Clemens added. Our depth
should be a strength for us.
I am very excited for this season, con-
cluded the Raider mentor. I believe we have
the potential to have a very successful year
and be very competitive in both our league
and sectionals.

Raiders connected on only 34 percent of their
field goal attempts last season as a squad,
including 18 percent from beyond the arc.
I think a concern is just our outside shoot-
ing, noted Hughes. Its an area that we need
to become more consistent at as a team. We
dont have that great individual shooter, but we
need to be able to find a way to make shots as
a group.
Defensively, the red, white and blue will
play man-to-man primarily with some zone
mixed in at times throughout the season.
However, Hughes wants to keep the Raiders
aggressive.
We will play man defense for the most
part, the Raider mentor stated. We want to
keep them active and keep them focused. The
girls have been very aggressive this year and
we dont want to take that away from them.
But we have to be smart about it as well.
Finding the right chemistry is a key for us,
concluded Hughes. The girls are still learning
to play together and how to work with each
others strengths. Communication is going to
be a big key to our success on the floor.
season for the most part, stated the rookie
head coach. With putting in a new offensive
scheme, they have adapted to it and have got-
ten better each week. The big thing is that it
will be an ongoing process and the girls have
to understand that and continue to improve
with it.
Hughes also feels the Raiders should be able
to utilize their quickness and size to allow for
some transition points in the coming season.
Our quickness is one of our strengths this
year, Hughes said. But we have to use it
effectively as well. We have good size on top
of that.
Senior Danielle Kortokrax (6-0) and sopho-
more Estie Sinn (5-10) also will see playing
time at the forward positions.
Our depth should allow us to be able to
rotate girls in and out and keep people fresh,
added the former Raider standout.
Senior guard Brooke Wilcox (5-8), junior
guard Leah Sinn (5-6) and sophomore guard
Stacy Flint (5-7) are expected to get playing
time as well.

consistent shooting the basketball. The Lady

New Archer coach optimistic about season
By JOE SHOUSE
Sportswriter
ANTWERP A new coach will be
on the sidelines guiding the 2013-14
edition of Antwerp Archer basket-
ball, but according to the coach, there
will be little change when it comes to
the style of play.
Last years varsity assistant, TJ
Hammer, was named head coach fol-
lowing the resignation of 13-year
veteran coach Scott McMichael at
the close of last season. The Archers
finished the year 15-10.
Hammer has five years experi-
ence as a varsity head coach with two
years being at Montpelier and three
years at the helm at Edon.
The new coach returns five players
from last years varsity roster includ-
ing starters Derek Smalley, Trenton
Copsey and part-time starter Kaden
Brumett. Also returning who gath-
ered varsity minutes last campaign
are Colton Stout and Garrett Jones.
The balance of the varsity will
include Sam Williamson, Eric
Miesle, Tyler Messman, Matt
Reinhart, Joe Buerkle, Josh
Longardner and Jeff Coleman. Eight
seniors, one junior, and three sopho-
mores make up this years team.
Antwerp is such a great school
with great kids. The transition from
an assistant coach to head coach was
an easy one, plus off-season work-
outs in the summer went well. I guess
the only difference is that I dont
sleep as much now, Hammer said
with a laugh.
When assessing his team, the head
mentor feels that from top to bottom,
he has 12 guys who can shoot the ball
very well.
We will be fine in that area, but
one of our weak areas will be in the
paint. We will need consistent play at
the post away from the basket, said
Hammer.
Overall, Antwerp will be a man-to-
man defensive team and on occasion
will run a 1-3-1 zone. Our defense
will be similar to that in the past. We
pride ourselves in our defense and we
will continue to guard very well. If
we guard, we will compete, said
Coach Hammer.
Hammer will be looking to senior
Derek Smalley to run the offense.
Smalley, the second leading scorer
from last year, will be one who
Hammer feels will bring success to
the program this year. Smalley, who
injured his knee during the football

season, is coming along slowly.
We hope to have him in the line-
up for our scrimmage on Nov. 23. Its
been a little difficult practicing
Trenton Copsey, the lone junior who
stands 6-foot-4, has worked hard in
the off season and will need to carry
the load in the paint according to
Hammer. Trenton can step out and
play outside but with his height we
will need him around the basket.
Also vying for a starting spot are a
trio of players including Garrett
Jones, Colton Stout and Joe Buerkle.
All three have been very competi-
tive in practice and its been a good
battle between the three, said
Hammer.
Eric Miesle, Tyler Messman and
Matt Reinhart all seniors will all
have playing time this year.
Miesle is a combo player who can
play at a couple of positions and
Messman will bring a lot of energy to
the game at the guard spot. Reinhart
knows all five spots and is a great kid
to have on the team, Hammer said.
Along with Smalley, Miesle is out
of practice due to a concussion but
hopes to be cleared and ready to go
on opening night.
Splitting time with the junior varsi-
ty will be a couple of sophomores in
Jeff Coleman and Josh Longardner.
Its only November and we have
a long way to go, but like any year
we feel we will compete against
every team on their schedule. Our
goal is to work hard and win the
GMC, concluded Hammer.
The Archers open on the road on
Nov. 30 at Paulding followed by a
road game on Dec. 6 at Fort
Jennings. The first home game will
be Saturday, Dec. 7 against Fayette.

Young Lady Archers look for improvement
By JOE SHOUSE
Sportswriter
ANTWERP Head Coach
Kevin Taylor describes the 2013-
14 edition of Lady Archers basket-
ball as young but athletic.
Coming off a disappointing 4-20
campaign, Taylor feels his Lady
Archers are much improved, but
will have to work as a team to
experience a level of success. The
Lady Archers graduated three sen-
iors off their team from last season
including leading scorer Alexis
Jones, Avrial Sawyer and Chay
Jackson.
Taylor welcomes five players
back who saw considerable play-
ing time including a trio of sopho-
mores in Avery Braaten, Annie
Miesle and Audrie Longardner.
Also returning are junior
Cheyenne Miller-Sweet and lone
senior Kaiya Jemison.
Joining the varsity squad will be
Kiana Recker, who played junior
varsity last year, and freshman
Peyton Short.
The seven-player varsity squad
will also have junior varsity play-
ers added on a game-by-game
basis. However, Taylor has yet to
determine who will play both jun-
ior varsity and varsity.
We have improved since prac-
tice started. We have already
scrimmaged against a couple of
teams and we are getting better,
said Taylor.
Looking at his teams strength,
Taylor feels they will be solid at
the defensive end, but may have
trouble scoring consistently. Like
most years, we do not have much
height but we have good speed. If
we can come up with a couple of
consistent scorers we should be
competitive, said Taylor.
Taylor feels Jemison can be an
offensive threat with 10 to 12
points per game and Short adding
seven or eight. If we can get those
two to be close to double figures
and then rely on the rest of the
scoring by committee, we should
have our chances to win our share
of games, he said.
Part of the committee Coach
Taylor will look to is Braaten, who
is the teams best shooter, and for
leadership Coach Taylor is still
searching for that important ele-
ment, although he is hoping
Miller-Sweet will develop that role
and own it as the season progress-
es.
My three freshmen from last
season (Braaten, Miesle and
Longardner) gained valuable expe-
rience and they need to transfer
their athletic ability into a more
consistent year. We will be more
team-oriented this year and will
compete for 32 minutes. he said.
Numbers are up this year, which
is a good sign for Antwerp Lady
Archer basketball.
We have 15 girls playing in the
program, which is four more than
last year. We wont have to watch
the number of quarters they are
playing in a junior varsity game in
order to make sure they are eligible
to play in the varsity game. This
year should be better all around,
said Taylor.
Antwerp will open on the road
for their first three games: at
Delphos Jefferson on Nov. 23; at
Paulding on Nov. 26; at Edon on
Dec. 3. The Lady Archers will not
play before the home crowd until
Dec. 5 when they host Kalida.

Antwerp wrestling continues to make strides
By JOE SHOUSE
Sportswriter
ANTWERP At first, the third
year for Antwerp Archer wrestling
looked promising with the poten-
tial of having the entire team return
due to no seniors on the 2012 ros-
ter. Unfortunately for head coach
Jeremy Kosch, several wrestlers
did not return and three wrestlers
moved out of the district.
We were hoping to have every-
one back but we picked up some
new wrestlers and were able to fill
some of the gaps, said Kosch.
However, there are a few return-
ing Archers who Kosch feels can
have some success and make some
deep runs in the season tourna-
ments as well as the state tourna-
ment.
Senior Colton Hall will be the
first Antwerp graduate to work
through the wrestling program.
The senior captain will wrestle in
the 152 or 160 weight class.
Colton has really turned the
corner by working hard. Hes one
of the team leaders and should do
very well come tournament time,
said Kosch.
Junior Jarrett Bute will be
wrestling heavyweight and Kosch
feels Jarrett has state tournament
possibilities. Hes the leader of
our program. As a two-time district
qualifier and statistical leader for
two years he has done so much for
Antwerp wrestling, Kosch said.
Also returning will be junior
Jordan Laker and sophomore
Austin VanAtta. Lake wrestles the
220 weight class while VanAtta
will be at 170 or 182 weight class.
Jordan had his ups and downs
last year and will need to be more
consistent while Austin looks to be
much improved over last season,
said Kosch.
The mentor is expecting big
things from sophomore Justice
Clark, who will wrestle at 145 or
152 this year. Last year was
Justices first year wrestling, but he
is looking real good in practice. He
is a very strong and quick athlete
who has worked very hard, said
Kosch.
Logan Shaner is only a fresh-
man, but Kosch is very high on his
potential. He was the junior high
conference champion last year and
will wrestle at 113 or 120. I am
really excited about Logans abili-
ty and we are expecting big things
from him.
Rounding out the squad are
Ashley Pratt and Mariah Elkins.
These two have never wrestled
before, but they are working hard
and we will just have to wait and
see how they adjust and progress,
said Kosch.
We obviously will not do all
that great in dual meets because we
dont have the numbers. There will

be several weight classes we will
not have a wrestler. But individual-
ly I think Hall, Clark, Bute and
Shaner can have some success in
tournaments.
With three years under his belt,
Kosch sees the wrestling program
making strides.
Wrestling isnt new anymore
here at Antwerp. We have some
experience and we are not starting
at ground zero. The ones we have
want to be here and they are work-
ing extremely hard, he said.
Kosch attributes the continued
interest and improvement in
wrestling to the wrestling club for
kids age 5 through sixth grade.
This is a great opportunity for
youngsters to be introduced to
wrestling at an early age. Right
now, we have about 25 kids in the
feeder system and in January we
hope to pick up another 20-25
kids, said Kosch.

A new look, lots of talent should drive Panthers
By JIM LANGHAM
Sportswriter
PAULDING For the first time
in several years, the Paulding
Panthers will not be a team charac-
terized by lots of height up front.
However, head coach Shawn
Brewer still feels that talent com-
bined with some solid upperclass-
men will make his team a threat at
any time in the Northwest
Conference.
Last seasons team came on
strong at the end of the season to
finish with an overall record of 16-
7 and 5-4 in conference play.
One of the big challenges early
this season will be finding the 35
points lost by the graduation of
Neil Roehrig, Lance Foor (leading
scorer at 15.7 ppg. and All-District
Seven and All-Northwest
Conference), Kaleb Clemens,
Steven Strayer, Trey Schroeder
and Logan Doster.
Thankfully, the Panthers are
returning a solid core in seniors
Kyle Kauser (10.3 ppg. last sea-
son), Julian Salinas, Guy Harder
and senior point guard Quentin
Vance.
Promising newcomers who
should add leadership by way of
their class include seniors Gerod
Harder, Javier Gonzales and Kaleb
Hernandez, junior Treston
Gonzales and sophomores Alex
Arellano and Corbin Edwards.
Even though we only have four
lettermen returning from last year,
we will play eight upperclassmen
that we feel very comfortable
with, observed Brewer. With the
addition of two sophomores to go
with the rest of the team we have
some nice athletes than can play
several positions.
Our team cohesiveness should
be a positive for us as they work
together to become the best team
possible, continued Brewer.
Defense will be a strong point for
this squad; having several different
players being able to lead us offen-
sively in scoring will take the pres-
sure of any one individual night in

and night out.
Brewer sees one of the chal-
lenges as lack of height, a sticking
point that could hurt if the team
gets into foul trouble.
Adjusting to the type of defens-
es that we want to play will come
with time as they get used to
them, Brewer said. Finding con-
sistency on the offensive end of the
floor early in the season will be
important for us to get off to a
good start.
Once adjustments are made,
Brewer feels that the overall sea-
son outlook for the team is very
promising.
If we stay healthy and work
really hard, I feel like we will be a
strong team again, Brewer said.
We have some nice pieces in
place offensively that we will try to
take advantage of and score some
points. The boys have put in a lot
of time into their game honing in
skills and hopefully their hard
work will pay off.
Conference-wise, Brewer sees a
lot of young talent in several teams
such as Spencerville. The two
teams that have the most experi-
ence and will be tough to defeat
will be Crestview and
Lincolnview.
We think we should be near or
at the top when everything plays
out and competing for a confer-
ence championship is very impor-
tant to us, Brewer said.

PAULDING The Lady Panthers bring lots
of experience to the court this winter. Seniors
Sierra McCullough, Jerika Bland, Alesha
Simon and Abby Pease are expected to bring
plenty of leadership to the squad.
McCullough, Bland, Pease, and juniors
Brooke Combs and Suzanne Reinhart are all
returning letterwinners.
McCullough, the teams top scorer last year,
is a two-year letterwinner and is a strong out-
side shooting threat. Head coach Lindsay
Schultz noted that McCullough has also been
working on driving toward the basket and ball
handling over the summer.
Jerika Bland has a big task ahead of her as
she will be taking over at the point guard spot.
Bland, also a returning letterwinner, is expect-
ed to help with shooting from the outside.
This is Alesha Simons first full year on the
varsity, commented Schultz. She played var-
sity off and on last year. She is one of those
people that does the little things that no one
sees but that are so important to the game. She
took 13 charges last year. Shes not afraid to
get in there and mix it up.
Abby Pease has two years experience on
the varsity already, continued Schultz. She
was our best post person last year. Even
though she is a little short for post, she plays
as though she were six-feet-tall. She works
hard at all that she does.
Junior Brooke Combs, also a returning let-
terwinner, is expected to start strong offen-
sively and defensively.
She is coming on a lot stronger and is a lot
better, said Schultz. Her defense is where
she improved the most, but she is also shoot-
ing the ball better. She makes really good ath-
letic plays; now we have to decide the best
way to utilize all of that athleticism.
Other individuals with exceptional athleti-
cism include Suzanne Reinhart, a letterwinner
and sophomore Jaycie Varner.
Reinhart has good offensive skills, Schultz PAULDING GIRLS VARSITY BASKETBALL TEAM

said, but she likes Reinhart as one of her best
defenders, a very physical player that will get
assignments guarding the opposing teams post
players.
Varner, who was on the junior varsity team
last year, will be playing some point guard.
She is 5-4, but she jumps higher than that,
said Schultz.
We dont have a real tall team, but we are
working hard on being in a mental toughness
frame of mind, said Schultz. Defense is
something players can work on hard and learn
how to do successfully. Offensively, you have
to have skill but on defense, you just have to
practice a lot and work hard.
One of the biggest challenges so far, said
Schultz, is deciding at any given game what
offense to use.
It depends on what works for the girls at
any game, said Schultz. Its going to depend
on what set works best on any night.
League-wise, Schultz feels that Crestview is
unquestionably the preseason favorite. She
likes the chances of Bluffton. Beyond that,
said Schultz, it is a matter of lumping teams
together; most teams have fairly even compet-
itiveness, said Schultz.
Panther wrestlers look to advance beyond sectionals
By JIM LANGHAM
Sportswriter
PAULDING First-year
Paulding head wrestling coach
Tony Gonzales is confident that his
team is solid enough to give a run
to the Northwest Conference title
and get out of the sectional this
year.
In addition, individually, he likes
the chances of Aaron Mock, the
Deatrick brothers and Cody Jarrell
to have the potential to make a
state run this season.
Taylor Deatrick is a senior and
will rotate competition in the 138
or 145 class while junior Adam
Deatrick is expected to wrestle in
the 170 class. Mock, also a junior,
is squared for the 152 class while
senior Jarrell is expected to wrestle
at the 160 level.
The weight classes are not set
in stone, said Gonzales. I dont
know their exact weights yet. Only
time and effort will prove me right
or wrong as far as their chances of
going to state.
Two other seniors will vie for
winning trophies. Sidney Salinas
will wrestle in the 106/112 spots
while Dakota Valdez will fill in at
the 170 weight class.
From the junior class, Nelson
Foster will wrestle at 120, Devin
Row will compete in the 195 class,
Justen Shepherd will seek to win
from the 285 class and Zack
Wesley will take aim from the 132
class.
Sophomore wrestlers include
Cameron Bronson (106), Ron
Mercer (152), Branson Minck
(120) and Kage Seals (112). Two
freshmen will compete for the
mats, Tyler Nichols at 145 and
Clystal Ramirez at 220.
My wild cards this year are
Kage Seals and Zach Wesley,
commented Gonzales. I believe
they have the potential to go far but
as a first year coach, I will have to
see their match quality of
wrestling.
