Gay troops face host of new challenges after repeal of Dont Ask, Dont Tell
By CHRIS JOHNSON cjohnson@washblade.com Despite rosy pronouncements from the Obama administration and others about the supposedly smooth transition to open service in the military following the lifting of Dont Ask, Dont Tell, a host of new problems has emerged for gay and lesbian troops. Stephen Peters, president of the American Military Partners Association, said, there are clearly challenges that remain for gay service members following the implementation of open service. These military families are still facing challenges that need to be addressed sooner rather than later, Peters said. A D.C. Superior Court jury began its third day of deliberations on Tuesday over whether a 21-yearold former U.S. Marine should be found guilty of

second-degree murder while armed for stabbing a fellow Marine to death after allegedly shouting an anti-gay slur following an April 2012 altercation. Pfc. Michael Poth, who has since been discharged from the Marines, has been held in jail since the time D.C. police arrested him on April 21, 2012, minutes after witnesses said he stabbed Lance Corp. Phillip Bushong, 23, in the upper chest with a pocketknife on 8th Street, S.E., across the street from the Marine Barracks. Bushong was pronounced dead less than an hour later after being taken to a hospital. An autopsy showed he died of a single knife wound that punctured his heart.

Gay congressional staff member Nishith Pandya, a friend of Bushongs who emerged as a lead prosecution witness, testied that Poth called him and Bushong a faggot while the two stood with others on the sidewalk outside Mollie Malones restaurant and bar as Poth walked by. Pandya, who works for U.S. Rep. Bobby Rush (D-Ill.), told the jury hes gay and that he and Bushong, who was straight, were platonic friends. Mayor attends opening of D.C. Centers new home

D.C. Center earlier this year to jump start the Centers campaign to raise money to complete the renovation work needed to get its new space at the Reeves Center ready for occupancy. Saturdays celebration marked the culmination of a competitive bidding process that began more than two years ago in which the Center submitted a bid to rent space at the Reeves Center under a city program that invited both commercial businesses and non-prot organizations to propose different ways the space in the city-owned building could be used that would benet the city and the community. Gray announced last December that the D.C. Center won the bid after a restaurant that initially had been selected for the space withdrew. I want to thank the mayor and his staff, Sessa said. They have been wonderful to work with. They have been gracious. They have been patient. They have really helped us establish this fabulous space.

Groups pledge $76,000 in donations

Center for the LGBT Communitys grand opening celebration of its new ofces in the Reeves Center municipal building at 14th and U streets, N.W. With Gray and Council members Jack Evans (D-Ward 2) and Jim Graham (D-Ward 1) standing before an overowing crowd in the Centers conference room, Center President and CEO Michael Sessa drew loud applause and cheers when he shouted, Were nally here hooray! Also attending the event were Council members David Grosso (I-AtLarge) and Muriel Bowser (D-Ward 4) and Busboys and Poets restaurant owner Andy Shallal, who donated food from his restaurant. Shallal, Evans and Bowser have announced they are candidates for mayor in the April 1, 2014 D.C. Democratic primary. All three as well as Gray, who has yet to announce whether he will run for re-election, have been longtime supporters of the LGBT community. Gray reiterated statements he made earlier this year that the city will make sure the D.C. Center nds another suitable space in which to move if the Reeves Center closes over the next two

Center with a check for $16,000 to help support the Centers programs. Martin Espinoza of Stonewall Kickball, a D.C.-based LGBT sports league, announced his group has donated $10,000 to the D.C. Center and has pledged $50,000 in contributions to the Center over the next ve years. Bernie Delia, executive director of Capital Pride, the organization that sponsors the citys annual LGBT Pride parade and festival, said Capital Pride has pledged $5,000 to the D.C. Center. Capital Pride rents ofce space at the Center. D.C. Allen, co-owner of the Crew Club, a D.C. gym and spa catering to gay men, said the Crew Club was pleased to have donated $25,000 to the

The Transgender Day of Remembrance really marks another day in the struggle to be able to protect the rights of people who are transgender in the District of Columbia, said D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray. Transgender advocates Earline Budd, Charles Hastings and Jeri Hughes; Wanda Alston Foundation Executive Director Brian Watson; Nico Quintana of the D.C. Organizers of the event honored Gender Rights Maryland Executive Director Dana Beyer, Alison Gardner and her late-husband, Dan Massey. Gwendolyn Ann Smith organized the rst Transgender Day of Remembrance as a way to honor Rita Hester, a trans woman murdered inside her Boston apartment in 1998. The D.C. event was one of dozens of Transgender Day of Remembrance commemorations, vigils and other gatherings held around the world. Those who gathered at the Metropolitan Community Church of Washington read the names of the 12 trans D.C. residents who have been killed since 2000. They also honored known victims of anti-trans homicides from around the U.S. and the world. Each and every one of us is important to our community, said D.C. Fire Chief Kenneth Ellerbe, who apologized on behalf of the department during last years commemoration for the way emergency medical personnel treated Tyra Hunter after a car accident in 1995. She subsequently died from her injuries. Our commitment to each and every one in this city is important. Assistant D.C. Police Chief Peter Newsham highlighted the unsolved murders of Stephanie Thomas and Ukea Davis in 2002 and Elexius Woodland in 2005. He said seven of the 12 trans homicides that have taken place in D.C. since 2000 remain open. The Metropolitan Police Department does not intend to forget these victims or their families, Newsham said. MPD will not be satised until all the people responsible for these homicides are brought to justice. Gray highlighted the passage of the JaParker Deoni Jones Birth Certicate Equality Amendment Act of 2013 that allows trans Washingtonians to legally change their birth certicates without sex reassignment surgery during his remarks. He said no trans Washingtonian has lost their life to violence in D.C. so far this year, but there have been a number of attacks he said should be classied as hate crimes. D.C. Human Rights Ofce seeks partnership with LGBT residents

Palacio says bias complaints, when justied, help entire community
By LOU CHIBBARO JR. lchibbaro@washblade.com Monica Palacio, the recently named acting director of the D.C. Ofce of Human Rights, said she believes the city is a pretty LGBT-friendly place. But in an interview with the Washington Blade she said instances of anti-LGBT discrimination and homophobia continue to surface. She said she plans to continue the work begun by her predecessors at OHR to help eradicate it through a strong partnership with LGBT advocates. Ive been here 23 years, she said in referring to her tenure as a D.C. resident and as an observer of the far-reaching laws adopted by the city to ban discrimination against LGBT people along with other minorities. So there are really good milestones, but are we a perfect city for the LGBT community? No, I dont think so, she said. I think we have work to do. Palacio, an attorney and longtime Latino community advocate, had been serving for two years as director of the OHRs Language Access Program when Mayor Vincent Gray announced on Oct. 24 that she would become acting director at the ofce beginning Nov. 3. In the same announcement Gray said longtime OHR Director Gustavo Velasquez was stepping down to become executive director of the Latino Economic Development Center, a private, non-prot organization. A spokesperson for the mayors ofce said the mayor will send Palacios nomination for the permanent position to the Council shortly. City Hall observers expect the Council to approve the nomination following a public hearing. The OHR, among other things, is charged with enforcing the citys comprehensive Human Rights Act, which bans discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity and expression along with other categories, including race, religion, national origin and sex. The law covers discrimination in employment, housing, public accommodations, credit, marital status and other factors. Elliot Imse, the OHR communications director, said that out of 341 discrimination cases led with the ofce last year, 17 were based on sexual orientation discrimination and two were based on

Gay Libertarian enters mayors race

Gay Realtor and Libertarian Party activist Bruce Majors announced last week that he led papers to run in his partys primary in April 2014 as a candidate for D.C. mayor. Majors, 55, ran last year as a Libertarian Party candidate for the D.C. congressional delegate seat against longtime incumbent Eleanor Holmes Norton, a Democrat. Although Majors lost to Norton by a margin of 88.5 percent to 5.9 percent, he received 16,524 votes, far exceeding the minimum number of votes needed to allow the Libertarian Party to hold a primary in the next D.C. election. Without a primary, independent and small party candidates running in citywide races must obtain 2,000 petition signatures to gain access to the ballot. With a primary, candidates can get on the ballot with petition signatures equal to 1 percent of voters registered with their party. In the case of the tiny Libertarian Party, Majors and other Libertarian candidates expected to run for City Council seats need just two valid signatures to gain access to the primary ballot. Gay couples join D.C. Adoption Day Celebration

Superior Court Chief Judge Lee Sattereld and Family Court Presiding Judge Zoe Bush signed the nal adoption papers for more than 20 proud couples, including several same-sex couples, at the 27th annual D.C. Adoption Day Celebration on Nov. 23. The event, held at the D.C. Superior Courts Moultrie Courthouse, was organized to celebrate the joy of adoption and encourage area residents to consider adopting or fostering a child in the citys public child welfare system, according to a statement released by the court. The D.C. Child and Family Services Agency, which co-hosted the event, has encouraged same-sex couples to consider adopting children in the District. According to the statement released by the court, the CFSA is currently seeking permanent, loving, adoptive homes for 123 children in foster care in D.C. D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton, and CFSA Director Brenda Donald were among those participating in the Adoption Day celebration. Palacio said she was hopeful that the relatively small number of sexual orientation cases led reects an overall decrease in acts of discrimination against gay men, lesbians and bisexual people in the city. She and Imse, however, said they believe the fact that just two cases based on gender identity and expression were led last year may be indicative that there are transgender residents who encounter discrimination but are not coming forward to le a complaint. Whats interesting is that this year were going to have many more gender identity cases than we had last year, Imse said. But weve kind of attributed that to our campaigns to reach out to that community. Palacio said discrimination complaints can now be led with OHR electronically through its website as well as by mail or in person. She said OHR staff members who work as intake ofcers are happy to help someone ll out the appropriate form used for ling a complaint. So please talk to us, she said. Its very important that they come forward and know we will protect their privacy. But they need to come forward and le a complaint. According to Palacio, legitimate complaints of discrimination help the entire community as well as the individual encountering the discrimination. If there is redress, hopefully the employer knows never to do that again, she said. Hopefully the agency knows never to do that again. So it has ripple effects. While ling the complaint is important to the individual we want the change to be systemic and institutionalized.

Gay U.S. ambassador sworn in

WASHINGTON James Wally Brewster on Nov. 22 was ofcially sworn in as the next U.S. ambassador to the Dominican Republic by Vice President Biden. The ceremony took place eight days after the U.S. Senate unanimously conrmed the Human Rights Campaign board member to represent the country in the Caribbean nation. The Senate Foreign Relations Committee in October approved Brewsters nomination. Dominican religious leaders and other ofcials opposed Brewsters nomination because he is gay. Cardinal Nicols de Jess Lpez Rodrguez of the Archdiocese of Santo Domingo in June referred to Brewster as maricn or faggot in Spanish during a press conference in the Dominican capital. Rev. Cristbal Cardozo of the Dominican Evangelical Fraternity and others also spoke out against the nomination. Brewster is the fth openly gay ambassador nominee the U.S. Senate has approved this year.

N.J. waitress allegations questioned

BRIDGEWATER, N.J. A New Jersey couple has denied a waitress allegation that they did not tip her because she is gay. Dayna Morales on Nov. 13 posted a picture to Facebook of a receipt on which she said a customer at the Gallop Asian Bistro in Bridgewater wrote, Im sorry but I cannot tip because I do not agree with your lifestyle. The former U.S. Marine subsequently announced she plans to donate roughly $3,000 in tips she said she received after the alleged incident to the Wounded Warrior Project. The couple asked to remain anonymous and told WNBC they tipped Morales $18. The husband and wife also provided the New York television station copies of their receipt from the restaurant and a credit card statement that shows the charges. Weve never not left a tip when someone gave good service, the wife told WNBC. We would never leave a note like that. Morales maintained she did not receive a tip during a Nov. 25 interview with the New York television station. Gallop Asian Bistros owner and manager declined to comment pending the outcome of an investigation into her allegations.

Court orders marriage license for Illinois couple

Terminally ill woman sought to wed immediately
By CHRIS JOHNSON cjohnson@washblade.com A state court in Illinois has granted a temporary restraining order to a lesbian couple in which one person in the relationship is terminally ill so the two can wed before the effective date of the states recently signed marriage equality law. U.S. District Judge Thomas Durkin, an Obama appointee, signed a proposed temporary restraining order on Monday ordering Cook County Clerk David Orr to grant Vernita Gray and Patricia Ewert a marriage license and register their marriage. Defendant is ordered to issue a marriage license to Plaintiffs upon their application and satisfaction of all legal requirements for a marriage in Cook County except for the requirement that they be of different sexes, and Defendant is ordered to register their solemnized marriage as is presently required for all other marriages, Durkin writes. Durkin adds in his own handwriting that the proposed order will expire on Dec. 9 unless otherwise extended. According to the complaint led on Friday, Gray was diagnosed in 1996 with breast cancer that has since proved terminal as it has metastasized into her bones and brain. She may only have weeks left to live. Even though the Cook County couple entered into a civil union in 2011, Gray and Ewert wish to marry in Illinois before Gray passes away. Erik Roldon, a spokesperson for Lambda Legal, said now that the couple has the temporary restraining order, they could marry as soon as Wednesday. In a statement, Gray expressed tremendous joy that shed nally be able to marry her long-time partner in their home state. I have two cancers, bone and brain and I just had chemo today I am so happy to get this news, Gray said. Im excited to be able to marry and take care of Pat, my partner and my family, should I pass. Gov. Pat Quinn (D) signed into law last week legislation granting same-sex couples the right to marry to Illinois, but that law doesnt go into effect until June 1. Lambda Legal and the ACLU of Illinois led the lawsuit Friday on behalf of the couple to seek immediate action. The advocacy groups joined by counsel at Kirkland & Ellis and Miller, Shakman & Beem asked that the court hear the case on an emergency basis. Camilla Taylor, marriage project director for Lambda Legal, said the temporary restraining order will bring quick action for the two in their remaining days. Vernita is terminally ill and she wishes to marry the woman she loves before she dies and now she wont have to wait another day, Taylor said. These two women, who have loved and cared for each other in good times and bad, through sickness and through health, will get to know what it means to be married. John Knight, LGBT Project Director at the ACLU of Illinois, said the judge issued the order because of the arbitrary nature of the start date of the new law. Their love deserves the dignity of marriage now and there is simply no justication for forcing them to wait, Knight said.

Texas gay marriage ban challenged

SAN ANTONIO Two same-sex couples have asked a federal judge to immediately block Texas from enforcing its gay marriage ban. Mark Pharris and Vic Holmes of Plano and Cleopatra De Leon and Nicole Dimetman on Oct. 28 led a lawsuit in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas in San Antonio that alleges a state constitutional amendment and other laws that ban nuptials for same-sex couples are unconstitutional. Lone Star Q reported the plaintiffs listed Gov. Rick Perry, Bexar County Clerk Gerard Rickhoff and Texas Department of State Health Services Commissioner David Lake as defendants in the motion they led on Nov. 22. Pharris and Holmes and De Leon and Dimetman are among the dozens of same-sex couples who have challenged state gay marriage bans in federal court since the U.S. Supreme Court in June ruled a portion of the Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional.

Football player allegedly stabs lover

BLOOMFIELD, Conn. Connecticut prosecutors have charged a high school football player with murder after he allegedly stabbed his 27-year-old lover to death. The Hartford Courant reported that Tarence T.J. Mitchell, 18, stabbed Ronald Rondale Taylor ve times at his Bloomeld home on Nov. 21. The newspaper reported Mitchell, who was the captain of the Bloomeld High School football team, and Taylor had a sexual relationship for two years. The Hartford Courant cited a police report that said Taylor wanted more than to be friends with Mitchell and the football player sought to distance himself from him late last year. The newspaper further reported that Taylor referred to Mitchell as a Bloomeld gay football player on Facebook and left the post online for ve hours. Taylor allegedly threatened Mitchell with a sword earlier last week. Mitchell remains held on $1 million bail.

Gay mayor-elect vows to clean up Atlantic City

Republican beat incumbent with support from Democrats
By LOU CHIBBARO JR. lchibbaro@washblade.com Don Guardian said he never became involved in politics until recently when he got fed up with how bad things were in his hometown of Atlantic City, New Jersey. Guardian, 60, a gay Republican, ran for mayor this year in the Nov. 5 election. He shocked Atlantic Citys political establishment by defeating incumbent Mayor Lorenzo Langford, a Democrat, in a city where Democrats outnumber Republicans among registered voters by a nine to one margin. I said I thought we needed to bring all of the different groups within Atlantic City together, Guardian told the Blade. And that extended to race, color, creed, national origin, political parties, sexual orientation and gender. For the past 21 years, Guardian has worked as executive director of the Atlantic City Improvement District, a non-prot corporation recently acquired by the state government that provides services to the citys tourism district where more than a dozen casinos and upscale hotels are located. Guardian said he believes he succeeded in dening himself as a good-government reform candidate capable of using his knowledge and experience in running the tourism district to address the longstanding problems plaguing the rest of the city, where most of the residents live. From a city standpoint the services are very, very poor, he said. From not cleaning the streets or replacing lights, paving roads, maintaining parks and playgrounds, cleaning beaches, maintaining the boardwalk services that you would expect from a city to be commonplace are not, he said. And yet we have the third highest budget in the State of New Jersey. Only Newark and Jersey City are larger than us, he said. And we have the largest workforce in the state. Added Guardian, I ran on a platform that I was going to bring those services to the other half of the city that was not receiving them. Pointing to his promise to limit his tenure in ofce to two terms, Guardian said he also ran on a campaign that I needed eight years to clean up this city, to bring development back, to bring housing back, to bring up the standards, to lower taxes and to reduce crime. To the surprise of many of the Guardian under the groups bylaws. I had my eye on this but we were not involved, Angelo told the Blade. But the fact that we have an elected gay Republican is a good thing. While he had few connections with LGBT organizations, Guardian said he supported LGBT equality during his tenure with the Atlantic City Special Improvement District, which he said adopted its own internal non-discrimination policy for LGBT employees. As a longtime member and leader of the Rotary Clubs of Southern New Jersey, Guardian said he and his partner of 19 years, Louis Fatato, used the occasion of Guardians 2005 induction ceremony as district governor of the Rotary International organization of South Jersey to formally announce they had legally led for a domestic partnership. It was great for us to announce it, he said. This was a great day for Rotary and for me personally. I have a domestic partnership and Im also being inducted as a governor of Rotary International. During this years mayoral campaign, Guardian said he expressed his support for same-sex marriage in New Jersey in response to a question presented to him and Langford during a candidate debate. He said that was a national issue and he was a Christian and everybody has their own views, said Guardian. My response was the courts have made it very clear that gay marriage is a civil rights issue and that I would always stand on the right side of civil rights. Added Guardian: In other words, Im not supporting it because Im a gay guy. Im supporting it because the courts have already ruled that New Jersey has to provide gay marriage and that our current domestic partnership is not the same as civil marriage and therefore it had to be changed. According to Guardian, Langford never raised Guardians sexual orientation directly on the campaign trail in his public statements. But Guardian said a letter that the Langford campaign sent to voters urged voters to ask Guardian about his unacceptable lifestyle. Neither Langfords ofce nor his campaign responded to a request from the Blade for comment on this and other issues surrounding the campaign. Similarly, the Atlantic County Democratic Party Chair, James Schroeder, and the countys Republican Party Chair, Keith Davis, did not return calls seeking comment on Guardians election as mayor. Atlantic City is located within Atlantic County. Also not responding to calls from the Blade for comment on Guardians election were spokespersons for Christie.

Also on his agenda, he said, are plans to strengthen efforts already under way to promote Atlantic City as an entertainment and beach destination in addition to its well-known reputation as a center for casino gambling. With many other states legalizing casino gambling, Atlantic City no longer has an East Coast monopoly on gaming, Guardian said, making it essential that the city reinvent itself as a destination with attractions other than gaming. Among the groups that endorsed Guardian were the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, the Latino Leadership Alliance of New Jersey, and the Pakistani-American Muslim Organization of South Jersey. Guardian said rank-and-le Democrats clearly crossed over to vote for him following what he says was an aggressive grassroots campaign in which he knocked on the doors of more than 3,000 homes to listen to what peoples concerns were. Theres no question Democrats and independents are the reason that Im the mayor-elect today, he said. They provided the majority of my volunteers, the majority of the funding. Following a recount and careful examination of mail-in and provisional ballots counted during a 10-day period after the Nov. 5 election, the Atlantic County Board of Elections last week issued its nal vote count in the mayoral race. Guardian received 3,929 votes compared to Langford, who received 3,568 votes, showing Guardian won by a razor-thin 361-vote margin. An independent candidate, John McQueen, received 230 votes.

Although Guardian beat Langford by a close margin, election results show he received 1,032 more votes in Atlantic City than Gov. Chris Christie, who won his statewide re-election bid by a landslide. In Democratic dominated Atlantic City, Democratic State Sen. Barbara Buono beat Christie, a Republican, by a vote of 4,293 to 2,897. In the statewide vote, Christie trounced Buono by a margin of 60 percent to 38 percent, catapulting him into the national spotlight as a possible presidential candidate in 2016. Guardian said that although he has yet to meet Christie, the governor initiated policies in his rst term to boost economic development efforts in Atlantic City. He said he looks forward to an amicable relationship with the Christie administration. Most political observers said Langfords relationship with Christie became strained last year when he and Christie clashed over an evacuation plan for Atlantic City during the onset of Tropical Storm Sandy, which devastated much of the Southern New Jersey coast. Guardian, in describing himself as a political newcomer, said he was unaware of the existence of the Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund, a national political organization that raises money for openly LGBT candidates running for public ofce. Had he applied for and received an endorsement from the Victory Fund, he could have received additional nancial support for his campaign. I have to tell you I was very nave in not knowing there was such a thing as organized gay, lesbian, transgender support, either nancial or otherwise, he said. And so no, I never applied and no one contacted me. Liebman cited testimony by witnesses that Poth became angry over a remark that Bushong made to Poth about an hour earlier when the two Marines rst crossed paths on 8th Street. A police report says Poth told D.C. police homicide detectives after the stabbing that Bushong called him a boot, a slang term used for a Marine just out of boot camp. Call me boots and the ght started, the police report quoted Poth as saying. He was talking shit so I stabbed himI stabbed him because he punched me in the head, the report quoted him as saying. Pandya testied that Bushong never hit Poth. In his closing argument, Liebman pointed to a civilian witness who testied that she saw someone tting Poths description walking along 8th Street saying to himself he was going to stab somebody. Liebman cited testimony by a police detective that Poth told police at the time of his arrest, upon learning that Bushong was being taken to a hospital, Good, I hope he dies. The prosecutor said other witnesses, including Marine guards who were watching Poth walk past them on 8th Street

and nearby streets prior to the stabbing, made it clear that Poth wanted to confront Bushong again and was walking up and down the street looking for him. You dont get to claim self-defense when you proclaim intent to stab someone before you come into contact with them, Liebman told the jury. The law doesnt allow you to use deadly force before you have contact in a selfdefense claim, Leibman said. Poths attorney, Bernard Grimm, told the jury Poth acted in self-defense and that the stabbing came after Bushong and Pandya walked toward Poth at the time of the verbal altercation outside Mollie Malones. Grimm said the jury should be skeptical about Pandyas claim that Poth made an anti-gay slur. Grimm pointed out repeatedly that Poth, who weighs 140 pounds and is ve-feet-seven inches tall, was far smaller than Bushong, who was over 6 feet tall and Pandya, who weighs more than 200 pounds. He said one of several videos obtained from security cameras deployed by businesses along 8th Street suggested that Poth had been on the ground and stood up just before the stabbing. This corroborated Poths claim that Bushong punched him in the head and knocked him down and that Poth stabbed

Bushong in self-defense, Grimm said. Grimm pointed to testimony by a Marine guard who witnessed part of the altercation that Bushong at one point changed directions and followed Poth after the two crossed paths on the sidewalk while walking on 8th Street. The Marine testied that Bushong reached toward Poth and put one hand on Poths shoulder and motioned with his other hand as if he was about to throw a punch. It was at that time that Poth appears to have stabbed Bushong, the Marine said. Leibman and Grimm played video footage from security cameras of several of the businesses along the street, but none of the video footage captured the stabbing. Grimm called Pandyas testimony unreliable, saying that Pandya told police the person who stabbed Bushong was wearing khaki colored short pants when it was clear to all other witnesses that he was wearing blue jeans. He said Pandya, knowing that the stabbing took place after Bushong followed Poth and acted as the aggressor, didnt want police to talk to Poth out of fear that it would become clear that his friend was the instigator of the ght that broke out between Bushong and Poth. He was in it up to his ears, Grimm said. He egged Bushong on.

Grimm also reminded the jury that witnesses said Bushong was asked to leave one of the bars on 8th Street on the night of the incident because he was intoxicated and acting in a boisterous and disruptive manor. Someone said dont let him get near anyone on the street, Grimm told the jury, saying someone in the bar feared Bushong would hurt someone. Liebman told the jury that although Pandya got the clothing description of Poth wrong, his testimony on what unfolded between Poth and Bushong was correct. Mr. Grimm wants you to believe that you cant believe anything that Mr. Pandya said, Liebman told the jury, including Pandyas testimony that Poth used the word faggot to insult Bushong. Mr. Pandya is gay. Do you think he heard that right? said Liebman. You better believe it. He had no reason to make that up. Although Liebman said at a pre-trial hearing in April 2012 that prosecutors considered the stabbing to be a hate crime, the government never formally charged Poth with a hate crime. A hate crime designation enables a judge to hand down a more severe sentence than what is normally required for a particular offense.

Phoenix mayor celebrates pro-LGBT ranking

By MICHAEL K. LAVERS mlavers@washblade.com Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton said extending rights to LGBT residents is good for his citys economy. Were a big city; were a young city; were a city that got hammered during the recession, he told the Washington Blade in an interview this week. I need every single person in my city to have every opportunity to be successful. Stanton spoke to the Blade a day after the Human Rights Campaign released its annual index that ranks cities based on whether their laws and policies specically include sexual orientation and gender identity and expression. It also examined other factors that include whether a citys police department has an LGBT liaison and if ofcials reported 2011 hate crimes statistics to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Phoenix is among the 25 cities around the country that include Philadelphia, Seattle and Baltimore that received a perfect score in the index. The Arizona capital, which is the sixth largest city in the U.S., is one of only eight cities in states without LGBT-inclusive anti-discrimination laws that garnered such a ranking. Its a recognition by me that I want the very best and brightest people to stay here in Phoenix, including our LGBT community, Stanton told the Blade. I want them to make sure they feel fully supported by their city government. Arizona voters in 2006 rejected a proposed state constitutional amendment that would have dened marriage as between a man and a woman. They approved an identical measure two years later. Gov. Jan Brewer in 2009 signed a budget into law that eliminated health benets for same-sex partners of state employees. Lambda Legal and the D.C. law rm Perkins Coie subsequently led a lawsuit challenging the law on behalf of 10 state employees. The U.S. Supreme Court in June declined to hear Brewers appeal of a U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals injunction that blocked the governor from enforcing the benets ban. The Phoenix City Council in February approved a measure that bans anti-LGBT discrimination in employment, housing, public accommodations and government contracts. Stanton also co-chairs a Freedom to Marry coalition of nearly 400 mayors from across the country who support marriage rights for same-sex couples. Companies want to move to or increase jobs in locations where the laws are similar to their corporate policies about supporting all of their employees, including the LGBT community, Stanton told the Blade. For us to be able to retain the best and the brightest and attract the best and the brightest, we have to have laws that say we want the best and the brightest. Arizona Sens. John McCain and Jeff Flake are among the 10 Republicans in the U.S. Senate who voted for a transgender-inclusive Employment Non-Discrimination Act on Nov. 7. Stanton said he is very proud of the GOP lawmakers for backing ENDA and for what he described as their leadership on efforts in support of a comprehensive immigration reform measure that remains stalled in Congress. I cannot believe the House will not take that up, Stanton told the Blade, discussing House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio)s reluctance to allow an ENDA vote in his chamber. ENDA is a no-brainer. Stanton also applauded bisexual Arizona Congresswoman Kyrsten Sinema who represents portions of south Phoenix, Scottsdale, Mesa and Chandler and the city of Tempe. He told the Blade that Sinema was public about her sexuality during the time they worked together when he was on the Phoenix City Council and she was in the state legislature. Stanton said he doesnt give her sexual orientation a second thought. Im proud of her for who she is and how she represents our state, he said. Im proud she represents us in Washington for all that she does, including the diversity that she brings to Congress. Shes an amazing person as people in Washington are learning, but weve known about her here for a long time already.

Dont Ask repeal yields new problems for gay troops

national guard units refusing to process spousal benet applications for troops in same-sex marriages; an Army base having to make special arrangements for chaplains to accommodate a lesbian couple; gay veterans not receiving benets in non-marriage equality states; and the condition for gay cadets at the Air Force Academy, where a practitioner of ex-gay conversion therapy holds a leadership role. Several state national guards continue to refuse to process spousal benet applications for troops in same-sex marriages, citing state constitutional amendments banning gay nuptials. This comes after an edict from Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel saying hes directed the National Guard Bureau to ensure the guards follow Pentagon policy to provide these benets everywhere in the wake of the Supreme Court decision against the Defense of Marriage Act. One state that has received signicant attention is Oklahoma, where Gov. Mary Fallin on Nov. 6 ordered her national guard facilities to stop processing benets altogether and directed all couples gay and straight to federal installations within her state to apply for benets. Oklahoma law is clear, Fallin said. The state of Oklahoma does not recognize same-sex marriages, nor does it confer marriage benets to same-sex couples. The decision reached today allows the National Guard to obey Oklahoma law without violating federal rules or policies. Like other states, Fallin cited a constitutional amendment prohibiting same-sex marriage or conferral of spousal benets to gay couples. In the case of Oklahoma, voters approved an amendment banning same-sex marriage in 2004 by 75 percent of the popular vote. According to the National Guard Bureau, a total of ve states are not complying with the edict: Texas, Mississippi, Georgia, Louisiana and South Carolina. The list omits Oklahoma, but the Guard wouldnt respond to a request for comment on why the state isnt included. These states maintain only the processing of same-sex benet applications is being denied, so once these troops are enrolled in the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System, theyd be able to receive them wherever their assignment. However, LGBT advocates have said participation by same-sex couples in national guard activities, such as Strong Bonds retreats for married couples, is threatened by these states decisions. Although the Pentagon has threatened additional action if these states refuse to comply with the Defense

Department directive on benets, a Defense ofcial wouldnt speculate as to what this action would be. These are federal ID cards paid for with federal funding to provide federally mandated benets, the ofcial said. The Secretary has directed General Grass to resolve this issue with the TAGs. Were not going to speculate on legal options at this time. Some ideas that have been speculated include a lawsuit against these states, deprivation of federal funds or federalization of these guards by President Obama.

Richard Hanna (R-N.Y.) and Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Fla.). In an interview with the Blade, Takano said the legislation is a backup plan should the Obama administration decide it must continue enforcing the marriage state of residency statute even after the Supreme Court ruling against DOMA. We are not 100 percent sure whether the administration will or is able at this point to do that, Takano said. Were introducing this legislation as a backup. Were not nding fault with the administration; its just that it came to the attention of committee staff and the Equality Caucus in the Congress that this is a potential issue, and so we wanted to make sure that we drop along with the necessary Republicans and Democratic co-sponsors. Calls on the Obama administration to stop enforcing the state of residency statute under Title 38 in the wake of the court ruling against DOMA have previously come from Sen. Mark Udall (D-Colo.), who has called on the administration to stop enforcing the statute until a legislative x happens.

Irwin, Portland said, and they were restricted by their religious afliation, they could not move ahead, but they immediately went out to nd someone who could. Still, in a statement from the American Military Partners Association that followed, Halford decried the notion that she and her spouse required special arrangements. It makes the whole thing very awkward and embarrassing, Halford said. Why cant we just be another couple at the retreat, like everyone else? Why do we have to have special arrangements?

Air Force hires ex-gay advocate

Finally, the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., has received criticism after AMERICAblog rst reported that Mike Rosebush, an advocate of widely discredited exgay conversion therapy, was hired by the Academy to oversee its character coaching program. As AMERICAblogs editor John Aravosis points out on his blog, Rosebush served as a clinical member of the National Association for Research & Therapy of Homosexuality, a fringe group that advocates for ex-gay therapy, and as a vice president of the anti-gay Focus on the Family. Rosebushs entire career for the past two decades has been devoted to curing gay people of what he clearly deems a problem, and what his former employers consider an illness and a depravity, Aravosis writes. How then could Rosebush not include a discussion of sexual orientation in his character and leadership coaching at the US Air Force Academy? During a conference call with reporters last week, the Air Force Academy presented three gay cadets at the Academy in an attempt to dispel the notion the Academy fostered an antigay atmosphere. While presenting a general sense of acceptance, the cadets reportedly acknowledged they did face issues at the academy, but they had been addressed. To the consternation of reporters on the call, the Academy wouldnt go into the nature of the issues, citing privacy concerns. The presence of Rosebush at the academy inspired a response from the American Military Partners Association and the Human Rights Campaign, which both called for the removal of the ex-gay practitioner from the school.

Chaplains cant accommodate gay couple

The issue of chaplains not being able to accommodate same-sex couples at Strong Bonds retreats run by the U.S. Army Chaplains Corps for members of the national guard has also emerged as an issue. Last week, the American Military Partners Association issued a news release saying that a lesbian U.S. soldier, whose named wasnt disclosed, and her same-sex spouse, Shakera Leigh Halford, were denied access to a retreat at Fort Irwin in California. After the story generated media attention, the public affairs team at Fort Irwin shot back by insisting the couple wasnt denied access, and instead the chaplains at the base had sought to nd other chaplains to make accommodations. Pamela Portland, a spokesperson for Fort Irwin, conrmed that account for the Washington Blade, saying chaplains had sought to nd an appropriate person to make the accommodation following a Nov. 7 meeting between couples and the commanding general even before the news story broke. Gay veterans not receiving spousal benets

Also gaining attention in recent weeks is the inability of gay veterans to obtain certain spousal benets if they live in a non-marriage equality state. Even though the Supreme Court struck down part of DOMA, Section 103(c) of Title 38 looks to the state of residence, not the state of celebration, in determining whether a couple is married. That means that gay veterans who marry their same-sex partner in one state and move to another that doesnt recognize their marriage cant apply for benets while living in that state. Rep. Russian journalist says politics behind anti-gay crackdown

By MICHAEL K. LAVERS mlavers@washblade.com A veteran Russian journalist said the Kremlins LGBT rights crackdown stems from President Vladimir Putins efforts to maintain his grip on power. Masha Lipman, who was previously the deputy editor of the Russian weeklies Ezhenedelny Zhurnal (Weekly Journal in English) and Itogi, said during a brieng at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Northwest D.C. on Nov. 15 that then-President Dmitry Medvedevs September 2011 suggestion that Putin, who was then prime minister, succeed him sparked criticism within the country. Putin faced direct discontent from the people later that year over allegations of fraud during parliamentary elections. Tens of thousands of people in Moscow, St. Petersburg and other Russian cities protested the contested vote. that Lipman said were designed to send a message to the country that those who challenged him are bad Russians, unpatriotic and immoral. She added Putin also sought to dene his critics as undermining our traditional values. He has to dene what good Russians stand for because his adversaries, his enemies are modernized, she said. Of course good Russians are dened as conservative. It is political conservatism, but increasingly social conservatism as well. Lipman said the Kremlin in the middle of 2012 began to focus more on sex, faith, culture, art and school curriculum. A law that requires groups that receive funding from outside the country to register as foreign agents took effect at the end of 2012. Putin in June signed a broadly worded statute banning gay propaganda to minors that mirrors similar laws that had taken effect in St. Petersburg, Arkhangelsk and other Russian regions. A second law that prohibits same-sex couples and any couple from a country in which gays and lesbians can legally from adopting Russian children took effect in July. Of course the anti-gay legislation comes as a natural element because it is the epitome of social conservatism, said Lipman. The Duma passed the anti-gay propaganda ban unanimously, while polls indicate nearly 90 percent of Russians support the law. This campaign, this shift to social conservatism, has worked well for Putin consolidating a conservative majority, said Lipman. Russian LGBT rights advocates with whom the Washington Blade has spoken in previous months shared similar observations. Polina Andrianova of Coming Out, a St. Petersburg-based advocacy group, said during an August interview she feels the ongoing anti-LGBT crackdown is part of a much wider campaign for the Kremlin to showcase its opposition to Europe and the United States.

Report documents anti-trans violence in Brazil

Gay congressman says problem has long history in country

LAVERS mlavers@washblade.com A D.C.-based international human rights organization earlier this month released a report that documents violence and discrimination against transgender Brazilians of African descent. The Global Rights report includes statistics from the Brazilian Secretariat of Human Rights that indicate trans Brazilians accounted for slightly more than half of the 300 reported LGBT murder victims in the country last year. The group noted an estimated 52 percent of them were people of color. Grupo Gay da Bahia, a Brazilian advocacy group that has tracked antiLGBT violence in Brazil for nearly two decades, said it saw a 21 percent increase in LGBT murders in the country between 2011 and 2012. The organization reported 128 of the 338 reported LGBT homicide victims in Brazil in 2012 were trans. Grupo Gay da Bahia further noted 250 LGBT Brazilians have been killed so far this year. The Inter-American in Brazil that concluded an estimated 90 percent of trans women in the country are functionally illiterate due to discrimination they experienced in the Brazilian education system. A 2012 study from the Latin American School of Social Sciences, which is an intergovernmental initiative that UNESCO founded in the late 1950s, found roughly 51 percent of Brazilians of African descent are functionally illiterate. With a reality marked by multiple forms of discrimination, the LGBT community in Brazil has struggled to ensure that the human rights to life and public policies reach these groups, Naiara Leite of the Odara Black Womans Institute in the city of Salvador said during a hearing on violence against trans Brazilians of African descent that the Inter-American Commission of Human Rights held in D.C. on Oct. 29. Over the last few years, the Brazilian LGBT rights movement has been greatly concerned with the excessive increase of murders and violence against gays, lesbians, bisexuals and most importantly with the increase in violence against trans people. Brazil is among the 15 countries in which same-sex couples can legally marry.

Commission on Human Rights reported 20 trans people were murdered in Brazil in August and September. The Global Rights report also cites additional statistics that show the homicide rate among Brazilians of African descent rose 5.6 percent between 2002 and 2010, compared to the 24.8 percent decline in these crimes among white Brazilians during the same period. The Global Rights report also documents pervasive discrimination against trans Brazilians of African descent in law enforcement and

employment and in the countrys education and health care systems because of their gender identity and expression and race. The organization says Brazilian police frequently force trans women of color to strip naked in public and use racial, transphobic and homophobic slurs against them. The Global Rights report also documents cases where authorities transport trans suspects and detainees in the trunks of police cars and other conned spaces. from each state in the nation on the basis of how inclusive their laws and policies are of LGBT people. These laws and policies include non-discrimination laws, equal employee benets, relationship recognition, inclusive city services and leadership on matters of equality. Twenty-ve cities in 2013 earned a perfect 100-point score with Baltimore among them compared to only 11 in 2012. Baltimores total score benetted from nine bonus points awarded because of the citys strong showing in some areas, such as providing services to vulnerable populations of the LGBT community. Baltimore lost ve points for not having a city contractor nondiscrimination ordinance. I was pleased to see that the HRCs MEI has shown what we here in Baltimore have known for a long time that Charm City is a welcoming and wonderfully unique place for our LGBT brothers and sisters to settle roots, Matt Thorn, executive director for the GLCCB told the Blade. Baltimore has a rich history of LGBT activism, including being one of the rst four cities to open an LGBT Community Center in the country back in the 70s, and Im excited to see what our future holds.

Anti-smoking campaign in L.A. targets LGBs

LOS ANGELES A new anti-smoking campaign called Break Up With Tobacco targeting LGB residents in Los Angeles has launched. Ofcials are hoping to reach a community that has a 50 percent higher smoking rate than its straight counterparts, the Los Angeles Times and other media outlets report. An estimated 20.6 percent of LGB Los Angeles residents smoke, compared to 13.3 percent of straight residents, the paper said. The American Cancer Society reports that 30,000 LGB smokers die each year from tobacco-related causes in the U.S. The article said the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that HIV-positive smokers were far more likely to die from smoking than from AIDS. Members of the Break Up Squad, a group of young men wearing cheeky T-shirts, will spread the anti-smoking message on social media, in gay nightclubs and gyms in the area and more. The article estimates that there are 900,000 smokers in the county, which costs about $4.3 billion per year to treat, the Times reports.

VANCOUVER The Vancouver Coastal Health has launched a new campaign aimed at stopping syphilis among gay and bi men there since rates have reached epidemic proportions and a 30-year high, the Vancouver Sun reports. The sexually transmitted disease is highly contagious. If left untreated, syphilis can lead to blindness, hearing loss, neurological problems and in severe cases can be fatal. Vancouver Coastal Health launched the campaign to urge people in gay and bisexual communities to get tested regularly and practice safe sex, the Sun reports. Statistics show that in 2010 there were more than 1,750 cases in Canada, up from the 177 in 1993, the Sun article noted. Health ofcials say the disease was almost non-existent 20 years ago but shifted into the gay community in the early 00s.

HIV strains resistant to drugs likely to spread

LONDON HIV-positive individuals who have never taken antiretroviral therapy (ART) are the main source of HIV drug resistance among gay men, according to Swiss researchers who published research results in Clinical Infectious Diseases, AIDSmap, a British AIDS Journal, reports. Usually the source of transmitted drug resistance remains unknown. However, it is possible to see if infections are linked or clustered using a technique called phylogenetic analysis, the article said. Participants in a Swiss HIV Cohort Study were therefore linked with samples in a national drug resistance database to see if clusters of HIV infections involving transmitted drug resistance could be identied and if the potential source patients were taking HIV therapy or were antiretroviral nave, meaning they had not. Most people (81 percent) were infected with virus that was resistant to a single class of antiretrovirals, but 11 percent had resistance to drugs in two classes and 7 percent were resistant to drugs in all three main classes of anti-HIV drugs, the article said. Well over half (58 percent) of the participants with transmitted resistance were associated with a transmission cluster where it was possible to identify at least one potential source individual. Of the participants with transmitted resistance and an identied potential source, 86 percent (43 of 50) had at least one antiretroviral-naive patient as a potential source. In contrast, only 34 percent of patients with transmitted resistance belonged to clusters where there was a potential source patient who was taking HIV treatment. Researchers said they believe their ndings demonstrate the importance eartly test-and-treat strategies to prevent transmission of strains that are resistant to ART, the AIDSmap article said.

Anti-gay laws have psychological effect: study

ANN ARBOR, Mich. A new study from the School of Public Health at the University of Michigan nds that states with anti-gay laws on the books have adverse impact on young gay men, particularly in regard to those who wish to be fathers, the Michigan Daily reports. Higher intensity cardio workouts can mitigate holiday indulgences
to one minute maximum. This way your heart rate does not drop and you get a killer calorie burn. Use more, lose more Your circuit should be based on whole body compound movements that incorporate upper and lower body muscles. Remember, the more muscles you use the more calories you lose. You want to use your chest, back and lower body as much as possible because thats where most of your muscles are. It requires more calories and energy to move your big muscles, so focus on that. A few of my favorite whole body exercises are the squat and press, lunge with a curl, spider man push up, step up-curl-press and the pull up with a leg raise. Though these are non-traditional cardiovascular exercises, they engage so many muscles across the body, that youll quickly realize you have entered a cardio workout. Take it up a notch Now, for my over achievers and over eaters out there, its time to step it up. You can get a max calorie burn by adding in high intensity interval training-type exercises within the base of your circuit. More cardio-focused exercises like burpees, mountain climbers, high knee runs and squat jumps can make the difference of 500 or more calories during and after your workout. These high intensity workouts raise your metabolism by making your body burn more calories after your workout. It takes a lot of calories to recover from a beat down like this. The key to making this successful is pushing it to the limit. This is a sprint not a jog, so if your rst half of the exercise is just as fast as your last half, then youre doing something wrong. Set a goal for completing a certain number of reps for an allotted time so you know if youre working as hard as you can. I suggest your max burn circuit includes at least two or three exercises built to get you heart rate into its upper range. With the holiday season in full swing, having a plan to stay in shape can help us avoid big regrets in the new year. Switch your current workouts to more calorie burning circuits and youll get out of this season as a champion, not a casualty.

The key to success is learning how to lean over the side without completely falling off in regard to our tness goals. As my clients go away during this time, I always tell them, Just come back the way (and shape) you left me. I emphasize this because, as my fellow 30 plus-ers may have noticed, its a lot harder to lose the post holiday pounds then it is to keep them off. The key is to stay proactive and you will survive this season without resorting to tacky sweat pants and baggy sweaters. Stick to these tips and youll blast away the calories from Thanksgiving and the rest of this high calorie holiday season. Be a circuit queen One way to mitigate the damage is to step up your cardio. This is the perfect time to tailor your next workouts to be high intensity, metabolic calorie burners which will keep your jeans tting until all the leftovers are gone. For the week following the feast, I recommend switching your workouts to heart racing circuit training, which is training many exercises in a sequence and then repeating that cycle. When setting up a successful circuit, think of ve to seven exercises that use as many muscles as possible and do as many reps as you can for 40-50 seconds. Complete your circuits for three to four rounds to really give your whole body a challenge. A very important aspect to successful circuit training is trying to limit your rest time between exercises

Lawmakers shouldnt fear appointments of those who share presidents views

The minority in the Senate, be it Republican or Democrat, have been afraid of debating presidential appointments to administration positions and judicial openings below the Supreme Court and deciding them by majority vote. After the vote last week to end libusters in these areas there was much gnashing of teeth on all sides. The Washington Post editorial After libuster vote, both parties will face nasty nuclear fallout said, Majority Leader Harry M. Reid (D-Nev.) proved not enough of a leader to resist the naked power grab. American democracy is that much poorer as a result. The New York Times in its editorial Democracy Returns to the Senate said, To-

days vote was an appropriate use of that power, and it was necessary to turn the Senate back into a functioning legislative body. Over the past decade partisanship has reached new levels and political ghts in Congress are now more oriented toward debating philosophical differences rather than looking for compromise that will serve the people well. Many attribute this to the gerrymandering of congressional districts, which created more safe seats for members of a particular party. In the Senate, more politicians get elected with slogans without actually having to discuss what their positions and votes in the Senate will mean to their constituents. Because of the Supreme Court decision in Citizens United, huge amounts of money from both the far right and far left are being poured into campaigns and that often overwhelms any rational debate. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) was able to lead the ght trying to repeal the Affordable Care Act gaining enough support from other Tea Party members of Congress, against the will of many of his Senate colleagues, to close down the government. He was and is still able to disregard the issue of what it means that 25 percent of Texans, his constituents, dont have health insurance and he has no apparent plan to get them coverage. There is enough money pouring into

the right wing of the Republican Party to threaten primaries against anyone who dares speak out against them. There is a willingness to threaten libusters over every political appointee that the president sends to the Senate regardless of their qualications simply to make a point and stymie him. It was with this background that the Democrats in the Senate used rules that they had only threatened to use before and took the action they did to end the pointless libusters. Many share my view of our democracy, which is that we elect a president with the anticipation that he or she will be able to put together an administration to try to move forward the agenda on which they were elected. They should be able to appoint qualied judges who promise to judge cases based on the law but may have a worldview more in tune with the elected president who is appointing them. That has always been the case for Supreme Court nominees but since that is the court of last resort in protecting the Constitution, those nominees will continue to get much more scrutiny and the minority party will still be able to use the libuster to try to stop those nominations should they feel inclined to do so. For many years the libuster was a rarely used threat. We must remember that this was not thought of when the Senate was formed but was added by senators at a later date. It was assumed that it would be seldom used because the members of the Senate, being the more deliberative body of Congress, would also understand the art of compromise. In recent years that has clearly changed and the minority party has tried to have much more sway over the people the president wants to help him/ her carry out their agenda. This has led to gridlock in many areas and openings in the executive branch and on the courts going unlled for months or even years at a time. Just a quick look at the number of cloture votes (a vote needed to end a libuster) shows where we are today. There were 38 in the eight years of George W. Bush and there are already 81 in less than ve years of Obamas presidency. Neither Democrats nor Republicans should fear the appointment of people to the administration or the courts who share the views of the president. That is what elections are for. Should the people not like the direction of the country they will vote against it in off-year elections for the House and Senate and in presidential elections every four years. I would rather trust the people than a small group of radical senators to do the right thing.

Thankful for my gals health on Thanksgivukkah

And grateful for the impact of marriage equality on straight minds
holiday. Who doesnt love to kill two turkeys with one stone. See? Im as crankycrank as Bull OReally at Christmas. Did I already miss his The Pilgrims were so NOT Jewish rant? For weeks, Thanksgivukkah food bloggers have been kvelling about their ingenious sweet potato noodle kugel, horseradish-chive mashed potatoes, pecan pie rugelach and Manischewitz-brined turbrisket with challah stufng. They caution that the turkey skin might have a purple hue. A bi gezunt. Dont worry, as long as you have your health. Truth be told and it so rarely is Im just mad I didnt think of Thanksgivukkah. That and the fact that Fairway is going to be double tsuris. On Manhattans Upper West Side where I live (and yes, Im terribly embarrassed not to live in the uber-coolness that is todays Brooklyn, mea artisanal culpa) Fairway Market is still an impressive geo-locator. It is generally packed, a grocery gauntlet. So when food shopping is my spin on the chore chart, I hop out of bed, slug back a half cup of coffee, pop on a hat, a coat over PJs, maybe brush my teeth, and Im in the produce aisle at 7 a.m. Its just me and the all-night, shelf-stocking crew nishing up their shift. Before the cash registers run out of paper or the bar code readers fail, I am checking out. Ive checked out with these women for 17 years. Im businesslike, amiable, ready with the special store discount card I still use despite NSA surveillance. I compliment new hairdos, ask about their weekends, freak about the cost of things, thank them and wish them a good day. My charm offensive has been effective except for one cashier. Ive thought she must be having a bad 17-year patch, or she has a child with a rare blood disease, or shes homophobic. My gal told me to give it up, yet I kept trying. But last year when I was the designated shopper because my gal was going through breast cancer treatments, I let it go. I didnt have the energy for it. Even if there were no one in her line, Id wait for another cashier. When my gal felt better between treatments and went shopping in full-on Yul Brynner bald, everything changed. The next time I went, the cashier beckoned me to her line and asked, How is your friend? I was so destabilized I could only muster, Stronger every day. When my gal felt better after another chemo, they got talking and she told her that we had just gotten married on our 25th anniversary. When it was my spin on the chore chart again, I shopped early, and was groggily heading to checkout. I saw our new friend, waving me over like she was part of a ground crew guiding a jet into its gate. She was beaming, congratulated me on our wedding and asked after my wife. I didnt explain that I prefer Wi-Fi-hotspot to wife. Theres being charming and being a jerk. As I walked home I marveled at how the legibility of marriage has made us so much more readable for all kinds of scanners. Despite my continued reservations about marriage, My Wi-Fi-hotspot and I acknowledge a different level of understanding from straight people, more light than heat. On this Festival of Lights, I give thanks for my dears good health. OK, it really is easier to just call it Thanksgivukkah.

Sometimes I suspect those who are enthused about the holiday combo are actually unenthused about family visits and thus welcome the two-for-oneness of the

Even turkeys offer a holiday reason to be grateful

Seasonal relief from D.C. Council malfeasance appreciated by locals
ping business mandate or startling social engineering scheme, local life is a bit more pleasurable when theyre not in cahoots. The April 1 D.C. primary election date results in a delightfully shortened intra-party campaign slugfest. Now that D.C. primary elections are required by national law to be conducted more distant from general elections, it provides a truncated campaign season for the gaggle of party candidates in the usually determinative Democratic primary. As a result, there will be fewer encounters with sidewalk intercessors and annoying robocalls, and a smaller number of voter forums with concomitant endlessly repetitive reporting of standard sound bites dutifully crammed into newspaper pages and onto local blogs. Local politicians will continue counting construction cranes, but their lack of selfconsciousness amuses. D.C. elected ofcials and political candidates have an annoying habit of bragging about the number of construction cranes towering above private sector development projects ignoring the fact that they glisten in the sunlight despite continuous enactment of business-halting and job-diminishing legislation. One day one of those cranes is going to swoop down and start scooping them up one-by-one from in front of media microphones and inging them into the Potomac. Prone to measuring the citys increasingly robust economic environment, acknowledging the role of business in creating it becomes nearly inevitable. Not that they wont try to delude themselves or us into thinking theyre responsible for both reason and result, but the reliance of politicians on the achievements of the business community in evaluating their performance has to be a humbling experience for them. Especially among those who believe theyre not actually the reason that development is as hamstrung as it is by their misguided legislative convolutions and burdensome regulatory requirements. D.C. Councilmember Mary Cheh wont be able to launch any mind-numbing new restrictions on local business or personal choice. Although the nanny states local queen bee will have ample time to study trendy restrictions on commerce and personal choice concocted in places like Berkeley and similar outposts of regulatory foolishness, Cheh cant introduce any new bills at least for a few days. Shell soon have time to renew attempts to outlaw tanning for those under 18, mandate commercial signage restrictions to prevent light interference with mating and migrating birds, and a litany of other preposterousness. Council members will have more time to try to gure out how the tipped worker wage system functions and discern a reasonable increase in the local minimum wage. Not only is it well known that Council members have little or no private sector business experience, but they have demonstrated difculty comprehending how things like the tipped worker wage system works. Let alone being responsible for a payroll or creating a real job. They can use the vacation for some eye-popping research and reection. City commissions will soon recommend D.C. tax reforms and regulatory improvements. The D.C. Council can ignore them as easily as the last voter-approved charter amendment, but at least theyll soon have the opportunity to review the hard work of both the D.C. Tax Revision Commission, chaired by former Mayor Anthony Williams, and the Regulatory Reform Task Force. Perhaps lingering holiday goodwill will cheer them into revising tax rates and reforming regulations that overow city holiday stockings with coal each year. It is the season for New Years resolutions, after all.

Glee star in D.C. this weekend with NSO Pops

By KEITH LORIA Although hes regularly seen on television each week as Glees teacher-with-a-heart-of-gold Will Schuester, Matthew Morrison admits his soul belongs to the stage. Ive been on stage since I was 10 years old, doing show after show, and I never knew how much I wanted to be on stage until I was without it, Morrison says. When I got into Glee and started doing lm and TV and I didnt have that interaction with a live audience, I realized how much I truly missed it and its really where my heart is. To appease his thirst for the stage, the Broadway vet has spent the past nine months performing with different symphony orchestras all over the world, and is headed to play the Kennedy Center with the National Symphony Orchestra tonight and Saturday night, in NSO Pops: An Evening with Matthew Morrison under the baton of conductor Steven Reineke. Ive done Broadway my whole career and then the last ve years Ive been on

a television show, so this is my chance to get back on stage, Morrison says. I am looking forward to this the most because I have such a history with the Kennedy Center, after doing a couple of Kennedy Center Honors performances. Having the chance to play with the NSO is such a great thing and Im really looking forward to the shows coming up. The Tony-nominated singer will be singing standards such as The Lady is a Tramp, As Long as She Needs Me and some Broadway tunes that were included on his recent album, Where it All Began. Morrison also plans to bust out a holiday tune or two from Classic Christmas, a six-track EP he released backed by the same 60-piece orchestra that accompanied him on his other album. When we were nishing up Where it All Began, we were done ahead of schedule and we were in this creative, great space so we just decided to do a couple of Christmas songs, he says. Im really proud of it and excited to join the ranks of great Christmas albums out there. Growing up, I listened to Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra and I wanted that same classic feel. I always feel like I was born in the wrong era. Morrison knew early in life that he wanted

to perform and studied musical theater at Tisch School of The Arts in New York, landing his rst Broadway show, Footloose, at age 19. Other shows followed, including The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Hairspray and his Tony-nominated role of Fabrizio Naccarelli in the critically acclaimed The Light In The Piazza. Its the success he always dreamed of. Its a combination of an incredible amount of dedication that you put into your craft, with a lot of luck involved as well, he says. I feel like I worked hard from a very young age and knew what I wanted. I did workshops and other shows, until I got my big break with Hairspray, which was kind of a uke. I was in the ensemble but the guy playing the lead landed a movie, so they bumped me up to Link. Ive been very lucky to have the breaks I have had in my career. Once Glee came along, it completely changed the ballgame for him, opening him up to a more international audience and allowing him to spread his wings and see what opportunities come. Hes proud of the work hes done on the show and the message that has resonated with so many especially those in the LGBT community.

Through the voice of Kurt, I think we saw that rst voice of a young gay person and the experiences that he had to go through in high school. Theres a lot of people telling these kids it gets better, but when you are in it, you dont really see that sometimes, says Morrison, whos straight. I feel it was great for people to actually see him go through the stuff and actually see he went through the trouble and it did get better. I think that character was such an inspiration to a lot of the younger gay audience going through a similar experience. Morrison believes Ryan Murphy and the cast helped make history with the show and its positive vibe will live on for years through DVDs and in syndication. At the end of the day, art and music are the great things that can bring you out of getting bullied. Putting your time and energy into something that is very positive, he says. It has been really groundbreaking and I think a lot of people have had their lives changed by this show. When Glee nally ends after the 2014-15 season, Morrison has no doubts about what hell do next: Im going to go back to the stage, he says. Its been kind of calling me for a while and Im looking forward to jumping back on.

How long have you been out and who was the hardest person to tell? I have been out since my sophomore year in college. Of course it was hardest to tell my family because I grew up in the Bible Belt of the South and they were/ are very religious. Whos your LGBT hero? I love Ellen because shes a proud lesbian but its not all about that. Look at her show and her appeal. Shes someone who came out and is embraced by everyone because shes just an amazing person who also happens to be gay. Thats what I try to emulate.

I wouldnt do anything except ask where the cure for cancer or HIV was because we have bigger sh to fry. I love whom I love and Im happy with it. What do you believe in beyond the physical world? I denitely believe in a God that loves us all exactly how he created us. Whats your advice for LGBT movement leaders? Keep up the ght because things take time. Dont push too hard and dont get discouraged. What would you walk across hot coals for? The chance to see my deceased grandmother again. What LGBT stereotype annoys you most? That gay guys are always weak and feminine. I can change the oil on my car and rotate my tires, among other things. And I carry jumper cables and a tire iron in my trunk. Whats your favorite LGBT movie? Priscilla Queen of the Desert or To Wong Foo. Tough choice! Whats the most overrated social custom? Saying Hi how are you? to someone you dont know. I think its safe to say that you dont even listen to the response and heaven forbid they actually stopped and told you how they really are. I really am a nice person I swear! What trophy or prize do you most covet? The award from my company for the largest event of spring 2012 company wide. What do you wish youd known at 18? That I was worth more than I would ever know. Why Washington? Its such a fascinating place as well as an international melting pot of individuals. Living and breathing history is all around us. It makes you want to do something to be something more.

As a boutique director for high-end jewelry store David Yurman at Tysons Galleria, he doesnt have to show up for work at midnight or worry about door buster sales. We dont have sales but theres a lot of increased trafc and its very busy all weekend, the 31-year-old Longview, Texas, native says. We do about 30 percent of our business for the year between Thanksgiving and Christmas so its just so busy and I feel a responsibility to the store to be there all the time. And with family still in Texas, the tight schedule makes it impossible to get home for Thanksgiving or Christmas. Clay plans a trip in January. Every person in retail feels a little ripped off with the holidays, he says. But in a way you get used to it at the same time too. You cant really hold a grudge because its what you signed up for. We knew this is a given when we got into it. Clay says he didnt necessarily plan a career in retail, having studied lm and TV production in college. He spent four years with Louis Vuitton but says his current employer is much more employee friendly. He manages a staff of 10 and moved to the D.C. area in 2010 with the company. Clay and his boyfriend of four-and-a-half years, John Saldana, live together in Arlington. Clay enjoys running, singing, charity events, movies, hiking and fashion in his free time.

Whats Washingtons best nightspot, past or present? I have to say I love Cobalt and Nellies when Im feeling festive. I will head to Number 9 if I want to have more of a lowkey evening. Describe your dream wedding. The ocean and a beautiful beach, our best friends and family with a beautiful cabana draped with white fabric and covered with white owers. At the end of the ceremony, we would release candle-lit lanterns into the sky at sunset. What non-LGBT issue are you most passionate about? For me, its all about health issues. If we dont have our health, we have nothing. Im passionate about breast cancer, Leukemia and Lymphoma and HIV-related issues. What historical outcome would you change? I wouldnt change a thing because Im a rm believer in things happening because they were meant to happen. Imagine if JFK or MLK had not been assassinated. Not to make light of those tragedies, but one could argue that their legacies had more impact because of their untimely deaths. Whats been the most memorable pop culture moment of your lifetime? The election of President Barack Obama. I know its been a few years, but I couldnt believe that we had an AfricanAmerican First Family. On what do you insist? I insist on honesty, integrity and a sense of decorum. I like to surround myself with people of good character. What was your last Facebook post or Tweet? Who is seeing Beyonc for the second time this year soon? This guy!

Our Heroes exhibit shows AIDS impact on D.C.

By MARIAH COOPER Our Heroes, a community-donated photography exhibit that chronicles the HIV/AIDS history in the District, opens at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library (901 G St., N.W.) Monday and runs through Jan. 5. Our Heroes has been a work in progress since 2002. Nine photographers, all of whom are D.C. residents, have documented notable people and places in D.C.s HIV/AIDS history. The all-black and white photos were displayed in 2006 in a collection of 150 photos. Now, with new pieces added, the collection totals 205 photographs. Biographies accompany the photographs and are all written in rst person. Its as if the people are speaking directly to the visitor and adds a personal connection of past to present. Organizers say its the only photography exhibit of its kind in the United States. Lead organizer Wallace Corbett, a gay man who has been HIV positive since 1989, says Our Heroes aims to archive the HIV/AIDS journey by showing the people whose stories are being told and the places at which these monumental events took place. The variety of the photos makes for a diverse history lesson. We took the time to document a very long and meticulous journey, Corbett says. Some of the pictures are very emotional, some are self-explanatory and some are artistic. The District should be proud that they can go back 50 years from now and understand its journey and who was apart of it, especially for black culture. Corbett says his favorite photograph in the exhibit is of a man pushing his dead lovers body in a cofn over the fence of the White House during the Reagan administration. Along the edges of the photo stand men wearing latex gloves who are afraid to touch the body. It was that mans way of saying to the president this is what is happening in your backyard, Corbett says. If you cant come to the funeral, we will bring the funeral to you. Lead photographer Kevin Kenner, also a gay man who is HIV positive, says the photographs were not all easy to come by. Historical photographs of those who had passed away had to be acquired from family members. There was a verication process to conrm the people had contributed to the citys history in some way.

Some photographs were damaged and had to be replaced. Other photographs were difcult to take such as the one of Enik Alley Coffeehouse, once located on I Street. Since the coffeehouse was out of business and those who had frequented it were long gone, the iconic space that once welcomed LGBT music and literature icons like Essex Hemphill and Michelle Parkerson had been lost. Kenner hopes the exhibit can serve as a reminder of Washingtons past and help young people shape a different future. Hes saddened that some of the people he met and photographed are no longer here. He says his own HIV experience and those of others has taught him to stop living recklessly. He wants to teach young people to be safer about their decisions.

The journey has come a long way but still the HIV/AIDS rate is so high, Kenner says. I see a lot of young people acting unsafe and uncaring about their life. If youre going to do things that are not safe than you have to be an adult and deal with the consequences that come about. We need to teach young people to be safe and hopefully people will be aware this journey is still going on and hasnt ended. The exhibit will be displayed on the lower level of the library. After its run, the library will permanently own the exhibit. Most people have footsteps in the sand and dont understand the importance of the footprints until the water washes over them, Corbett says. This way those footprints are still there and we wont forget where weve been and we can hopefully see where were going.

The conundrum of chance

Team behind hit Normal returns with pre-Broadway D.C. debut
By PATRICK FOLLIARD Do you ever wonder to what extent chance rules your destiny? The new musical If/Then starring Broadway megastar Idina Menzel as a woman on the precipice of a new life does. Not just how chance affects the individual, but also how the ripple effect of our lives impacts in signicant and small ways the fate of those around us. The neatly titled but rather rambling If/Then (currently premiering at the National Theatre before moving on to Broadway) centers on Elizabeth (Menzel), an urban planner in her late 30s. We meet her at a pivotal time after 10 years mired in an unhappy marriage and professional doldrums in Phoenix, Elizabeth returns solo to New York, her city, eager to get her life right. From here, the musical cuts back and forth between two narratives, both possible realities for our heroine. As Beth, she concentrates almost solely on her career; but as Liz, she makes love and family more of a priority. Though very different, neither of these paths is particularly less traveled, nor are they immune from hardship. Even though Brian Yorkeys book with its sometimes confusing parallel stories is cleverly conceived and keeps the audience on its collective toes, the show unfolds unevenly the plodding rst act is followed by a brisker, high drama second. Its most notable achievement however, is the eshed out character of likable Elizabeth. As the data-obsessed but down-to- earth PhD, Menzel, who famously created the parts of Maureen, the wild bisexual performance artist in Rent, and, of course Wickeds green-faced witch Elphaba, gets to show off her considerable acting chops. If/Then reunites Tom Kitt (music) and Yorkey (book and lyrics) and director Michael Greif (the team behind the commercial/critical hit musical Next to Normal). It also brings together a truly stellar, pitch-perfect diverse cast to portray Elizabeths friends and love interests including handsome James Snyder as Josh, a low-key Nebraska

born ER doctor and army reservist. Anthony Rapp plays Lucas, an intense affordable housing activist who earns his living as a barista and is bisexual. And Kates roving-eyed partner Anne is beautifully underplayed by Jenn Colella, who identies as gay offstage too. Jerry Dixon is Stephen, Beths unhappily married boss. Country legend to play D.C. show next week

Those that assume country, bluegrass and Americana artists arent supportive of LGBT rights may not realize that many routinely work to further the cause. Consider 12-time Grammy Awardwinning artist Emmylou Harris, who came to prominence in the Washington music scene, and will soon perform here. Harris has performed and donated auction items to the Human Rights Campaigns Equality Dinners in Nashville and has otherwise lent her voice to furthering LGBT rights. You know, Nashville still has a ways to go there, but were on the move, the legendary artist said in an interview with the Blade. Harris lives in Nashville in Davidson County and says that, Davidson is a little blue county in a sea of red in the State of Tennessee. Harris lent her name to hasten that move just this past May when she joined fellow musicians Big & Richs William Big Kenny Alphin, Mary Chapin Carpenter and Rodney Crowell in co-signing an open letter in support of the now successful marriage equality push in Illinois. Traditionally speaking, country music, arguably more than any other genre, draws its inspiration from that inexplicable conundrum known as the human condition, the letter reads. Songs and stories of love, family, joy, and human imperfection are the root of its appeal. Harris doesnt recall a particular turning point that heightened her awareness of LGBT issues when she lived in the D.C. area but was caught up in the urgency of it in recent years. I was totally not aware of that at all, she says of the discrimination faced by the LGBT community, especially in the 1970s when she lived in the D.C. area. Really it just sort of came to me later in life, the urgency of the situation. You broaden your horizons as you meet people and more people come into your fold as friends. I just believe in equal rights for everyone. Everyone has the right to happiness to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. And, you know, it shouldnt be different for anyone. She was quick to add that she would welcome the opportunity to perform at Capital Pride and other LGBT events. For now, fans can support Harris by

attending her upcoming show to benet Bonapartes Retreat, which she operates from her Nashville home. Named after her beloved dog Bonaparte who died nearly 10 years ago, Harris takes in dogs whose time has run out at Nashvilles Metro Animal Control and houses them in a bunk house in the corner of her small backyard. She relies on support from the greater Nashville community, which pitches in to foster the dogs. We keep them, socialize them and love them until we nd homes for them, Harris said. Key to the success of the retreat are the many fundraising efforts Harris undertakes around the country on top of her regular and busy touring schedule. The show next week is another homecoming for Harris who fondly recalls her years in D.C. and often returns. I was kind of a staple there at Clydes and my mother and I used to shop there at Garnckles, she says of the famed department store that was at the site currently occupied by the Hamilton. Harris says she hopes the Hamilton benet becomes an annual tradition. She also fondly recalls performing at the now defunct Childe Harold bar and restaurant in Dupont Circle, which saw early performances by Bruce Springsteen, The Ramones, Al Jarreau and Bonnie Raitt. Harris laughed when told her name was used for a sandwich at the Childe Harold. Right, well, you know, you get publicity any way you can, a sandwich, or whatever, she said. Now, of course, Harris receives publicity everywhere she goes, and everywhere almost always includes her dogs. During her March show in the D.C. area with Rodney Crowell in support of their album Old Yellow Moon,

She recalls that Bonaparte was an incredible travel dog and went everywhere with her. Her one regret during her many years on the road was that she spent many of those years without a dog. When Bonaparte died and Harris eventually adopted Keeta and then Bella, the big black dog that came into my life, they were just great! Fans know that Harris wrote the song Big Black Dog based on her experience meeting and then rescuing Bella from the pound. Listen for her to likely include that song in her upcoming concert. Although her show will take place after Thanksgiving, she says her heart is always full of thanks for the joys she has found in life. As far as music, I think Ive been able to do whatever I want. Ardeo+Bardeo = mixed results

Cleveland Park bistro has new chef, lofty reputation
By JONATHAN HOWARD Ardeo+Bardeo (3311 Connecticut Ave N.W.) is located in the historic district of Cleveland Park and has long been a neighborhood favorite. In November 2010, this modern Bistro and wine bar underwent a major renovation that united the two spaces with a gorgeous 24-seat island bar. More recently Chef Matt Kuhn joined the Ardeo+Bardeo team. Kuhns restaurant career started when he was just 15 years old when he began washing dishes at a small family owned Greek restaurant. He then worked as a kitchen manager in college as he earned his bachelors degree in restaurant management. After graduation he took a position in Lake Placid, N.Y., where he worked under acclaimed chef Brian Moyers. Kuhn was also part of the culinary team at Fig when Chef Mike Lata captured his James Beard Award. Most recently Kuhn was working at D.C. Coast (1401 K Street dominates the space while they prepared our table. We were having a late dinner at 9:30 p.m. so the restaurant wasnt packed but there was still some activity. It felt very much like the popular neighborhood establishment I was expecting. As the ve of us perused the menu, we decided to order a couple appetizers prior to the main dishes and of course, a bottle of wine from the impressive list. For our appetizers we chose the Poutine Fries, which are fries and a pimento cheese fondue. This dish sadly had little more avor then a melted down processed cheese log. We also tried the Southern style Deviled Eggs, which were luscious with caviar, beet mousse and crispy capers. I was hoping to have the Duck Cont Pizza as an appetizer as well, but I was outvoted, although it may have been a better option than the cheese fries. Our entre selection skipped around the menu a bit with some of us ordering salads, some pasta, and some seafood and meat. I ordered the Roman-style gnocchi with a Bolognese sauce and parmesan. The dish was not what you expect from gnocchi but it was a light and uffy dish that I truly enjoyed. The seared Atlantic swordsh with a Meyers lemon emulsion was beautifully cooked and quite tasty. The grilled Moulard Duck breast was perfectly prepared, which is no easy task, however the chestnut risotto was grainy and overall had a displeasing dry and earthy texture. The hand cut pappadelle with braised veal breast was an interesting dish, but instead of the veal being tender, it was chewy and stringy. Overall, we experienced a very mixed meal with some excellent dishes making their way to our table, as well as some sub-standard dishes. Unfortunately, due to the below standard dishes, we all left Ardeo+Bardeo slightly disappointed. Ardeo+Bardeo has a great history and it will continue to serve excellent dishes and be a virtual whos who of Washington, while still maintaining its neighborhood feel. Kuhn has a great deal of experience and I trust that while some of the dishes were misses on this visit, the consistency will improve. Overall, a mixed review on this occasion, but I hope to return shortly and be blown away.

be getting into with me. Im a pretty devoted boyfriend, supportive, show him a great time, etc., and I dont ask for much. Given how important this is to me, I think he should be willing to at least try it. But he says that its a line he wont cross. I tell him that if he wants to keep dating me, he has to be open to this, yet he still wont agree. Outside of this one big issue we have a pretty good relationship, so I think I speak for both of us when I say wed like to stay together. But dont tell him its a deal breaker unless youre certain that it is, or youll simply be using empty threats to get your way. Telling David what is most important to you is very different from telling him that he has to do what you want. The words

may be similar, but if your intent is to yank your partners chain rather than to let him know where you solidly stand, you arent playing fair. If David says no, then youre free to leave this relationship and look for a new partner someone you care for as much as David, but whose sexual interests are a closer match to yours. Of course, there are no guarantees that youll nd this combination. If youd rather be with David than leave him, even if he wont acquiesce, then of course you should stay. But remember that you have made this choice; so griping to David about what youre missing going forward is foul play. Sometimes we get what we want from our partners and sometimes we dont. Thats just how it goes when we pair up with another person who has his own desires and interests. Expecting otherwise, believing that our partner should do what we want when he has a different wish, simply isnt realistic. While you absolutely can ask for what youd like, trying to force the outcome will certainly give you a miserable relationship.

Embrace the clutter before moving on, sanitizing your house
By SUE GOODHART The magazine advertisement is slick and shiny with lots of white space. Eye candy. Spectacular homes and somewhat beautiful real estate agents adorn the pages. We are intrigued by the features of each property and shake our heads at the prices at which they are offered. But do those depictions really reect what we think of as home? As a listing agent, my rst task is to minimize some of the personality of the home I am about to list. We make it appear as if no one really lives there or if they do, they have the perfect life and home decor. We strive to make it show like the magazine ads and the furniture catalogs that ll our mailboxes scrubbing away the dirt and hiding any discord under the rug. People sell their homes for wonderful reasons success in a new business or job, retirement, a new partner in life. They demand a change in space or location to go with their life changes. Moves happen for other reasons,

too, including difcult nancial situations, death, divorce and illness. Whatever the reason, we come in and buff and shine, throwing out problems along with the cobwebs and clutter. That is what makes our job so satisfying and why I am so grateful that as an agent I can be an important part of life changes. So

when you see those shiny pages with free rooms and squeaky-clean kitchens, remember they once looked very much like your own home and were lled with the same joys and sadness that we all experience at different points in our lives. This Thanksgiving, look around at the place you call home and be grateful for the

comfort and shelter it offers. Maybe someday the home on the shiny page will be yours. If not, the one you have even with the clutter is still very special.

New gourmet market offers international foods, specialty items in Dupont

By MARK LEE When a storefront business opened last month on Dupont Circles main thoroughfare, it represented more than a contribution to community commerce. Neighborhood residents Niko and Oana Adamopoulos were continuing family traditions. The Mediterranean Way gourmet market, located two blocks north of the Circle, was borne of the modern young couple missing the products of their life in Greece. They noticed a dearth of food items from the region and were eager to share them. The bi-level shop, at 1717 Connecticut Ave., N.W., features foodstuffs from Greece, Spain, Italy, France and Tunisia, among other countries. Curious passersby drawn inside discover a tasting table of varietal extra-virgin infused Greek olive oils sourced from a small estate in Lakonia, as well as an array of balsamic vinegars. Set up European-style, a welcoming ambience is important to professional nutritionist Oana, who manages daily operations. We want people to feel at home or in the Mediterranean, she explains, and have a chance to explore and ask questions in a warm and natural space. We arent a specialty store, Niko points out, but an everyday place where customers can shop for affordable, highquality and healthful products. Imported cheeses, feta, Serrano ham, chorizo, meats, pastas, honeys, condiments, whole Greek oregano and natural spices, organic nuts, Greek coffee and brass briki stovepots for brewing, Middle Eastern pickles and Israeli couscous are among a constantly expanding inventory of food and pantry items brimming from crate shelving and table displays. A section is devoted to imported personal care products containing mastiha an ingredient also infusing honeys and other food items. Cultivated from mastic tree resin on the Greek island of Chios, the substance has long been heralded for topical skin rejuvenation and culinary benets as a health and digestive aid. small-scale producers supplying local markets in Europe. Many of these family-run sources are personal acquaintances some exclusive to the shop. A selection of Mediterranean sandwiches, salads and heat-at-home traditional Greek meals are also available. Stretching from sunlit windows both back and front highlighting wood ooring, the interior is an inviting environment. A loft-style upper level provides informal seating and features works by local artists and photographers. The front window displays sample gift baskets, stocked with items from specific regions or specially assembled offering a gift option for the kitchen acionado. Born in the U.S. to Greek immigrants, Niko and his family soon after returned to Kalamata on the Peloponnese peninsula of southern Greece. Surrounded by family and friends operating restaurants and shops, Nikos youth prompted his entrepreneurial aptitude. Later returning with his family, Niko studied economics and earned his MBA in international business. He landed in D.C. at the U.S. Department of Labor before relocating to Athens, where he represented artisanal producers of Greek wines and olive oils to commercial buyers around the globe. Niko met Romanian-Greek Oana when she was living in Bucharest. They stayed in touch during her stint managing caf operations in Italys Tuscany region and married on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus. Moving to D.C. two years ago when Niko returned to the Labor Department, they developed their business plan. Niko joins Oana evenings and on weekends at the shop. Niko volunteered in Athens promoting cultural diversity and the rights of HIV, LGBT, and other disenfranchised populations. That experience created a goal of donating a percentage of prots next year to customer-selected human rights organizations.
