Than Doan Professor Steven Hall English 1010-009 11/27/2013 Position Synthesis of Energy Drink Today, a lot of energy

drinks appear on market such as Red Bull, Rock Star, or Monster. People who consume it, they dont really know what inside of these drinks are? And what is going to happen after they drink it. Energy drinks are unnourished fluid, it has a lot of bad and unknown ingredients which are risky and threaten to your health. All those kinds of drinks are making you weak instead of healthier, and it can be a drink that poisons to peoples health. However, we should to take a big distance from these drinks and ask yourself what effect do energy drinks can influence to peoples health. In the article Health Effects Of Energy Drinks On Children, Adolescents, And Young Adults by Seifert. She stated most of ingredients in energy drinks are caffeine, sugar, calories, guarana, taurine, ginseng and so on (table 2, Seifert). I wonder that all ingredients in energy drinks are bad or good. Many studies have shown that most of ingredients in energy drink are bad. These ingredients come with many health problems like diabetes, cardiac abnormalities, or mood and behavioral disorders and so on. Especially, Caffeine, the most commonly used psychoactive drug worldwide (page 9, Seifert). Caffeine is majority ingredient in energy drinks; also it can make people nervousness, irritability, anxiety, paralysis, blood pressure, sleep disturbances and etc. Same to Seifert, another article Energy Drink Alert by Crane, I agree with Cranes claim that Caffeine is as harmful in coffee as it in energy drinks. Although caffeine can definitely keep you awake, it can also upset

your stomached, cause your heart to race and make you feel jittery and anxious. These are also negative effects that caffeine can impact on people. My view is that caffeine can make our brain dull and less memory. Because, according to Cranes argument that caffeine is harmful as in coffee. If we consume a lot of coffee in a day or every day, it can have a big impact on the body and influence to the brain. According to Seifert Physiologically, caffeine causes coronary and cerebral vasoconstriction, stimulates skeletal muscle, has cardiac chronoscopic and inotropic effects and reduces insulin sensitivity, (page 9, Seifert). Surely, if we consume a can of energy drinks, consequence all kind of diseases can happened to you, for instance we might have stroke, blood pressure or might be death. Also, if people use these drink constantly, their bodies will absorb lots of death energy ingredients, instead of healthier, they more likely close to an end. In addition, We couldnt find any evidence to support claims that energy drinks have any beneficial effects, says Dr. Steven Lipshultz, a pediatric cardiologist (page 2, Crane). In another article by Carolyn Roy Pediatric Points she explains that Energy drinks may add to the already epidemic problem of childhood obesity due to the sugars, calories and sweeteners energy drinks contain, (page 1, Carolyn). Carolyn is right that sugar in energy drinks can make children at higher risk of obesity. In Alexanders article The sugar content in energy drinks ranges from 21g to 34g per 8oz, and can come in the form of sucrose, glucose, or high fructose corn syrup, (paragraph 6, Alexander). With the amount of sugar in energy drinks, children can have many health problems like obesity, dental issue and many diseases relate to sugar. Not only caffeine is a bad ingredient, but Taurine is another bad ingredient in energy drinks as well. Taurine may cause increase in stroke volume by suppressing sympathetic nervous stimulation and influencing calcium stores in cardiac muscle (page 11, Seifert). Moreover, other energy drinks ingredients; such as gaurana, calories, ginseng, yohimbine also

can cause people stroke, abdominal pain, headache, liver damage, kidney failure, agitation, seizures, heart failure and death. However, contrary to those negative effects of energy drinks, Positive effect of energy drinks, by Mets. He argues that there has something good in energy drinks Energy drinks are popular to overcome driver fatigue, said Mets (page 2, Mets). Energy drinks have caffeine, taurine, inosital; these ingredients have a good effect on cognitive performance, attention in driving. For example, a lot of drivers can get tired and easier to sleep in a long distance. They have less attention at night because they feel sleepy and that is easier to make accidents happen. In many studies show that Energy drinks significantly improves driving performance and reduced subjective sleepiness during subsequent driving, (page 7, Mets). Energy drinks can make drivers awake, more attention and more consciousness in driving performance. According to the article Energy drinks improve heart function, study suggests by ESC, it also talks about positive effect of energy drink on body. Energy drinks enhance contractions of both the left and right ventricles, thereby delivering a positive effect on myocardial function, (paragraph 8, ESC) said Dr Cameli. Drinking canned of energy drink can improve heart function and he continues: Our study was performed in young healthy individuals at rest. Future studies need to focus on whether such benefits persist after long term consumption of energy drinks, and what the effects are of consuming these drinks during physical activity. It will also be important to determine which of the effects are induced in patients with cardiac disease to further our understanding of the potential benefits or risks of energy drink consumption, (paragraph 9, ESC). However energy, drinks can have negative or positive effect, but consuming too much canned of energy is not good idea to be healthy. The article Energy Drink Alert, by Crane,

The overuse of energy drink has landed health young people in the hospital, with symptoms ranging from dizziness to seizures. In some cases the drinks have even been linked to death These claim from promoted poison control centers in the U.S. Most likely teens and adults are victims of this. This claim is a fact that people using too much energy drinks will link to death. When you consume energy drinks, your body can be strong and make you feel good or more active but its no longer. After that you might feel tired or ran out of energy because of stopping consume these drinks. People who arent as tolerant of caffeine will be more likely to suffer these ill effects says Bruce. Overuse caffeine not only make you awake or feel strong, but it also cause you headache, feel tired or your heart beat speeding and high blood pressure. Overdose of energy drinks are so much dangerous, I can see that if we multiple time drinking canned energy, we will have multiple time to let diseases are growing in our body. Overdose of energy drinks is one of example that might make people die, but out there lots of people die because of these drinks. Furthermore, most of drinkers use energy drinks to combine with alcohol to get more or less doses or new taste. This is dangerous because energy drinks are not good; these drinks have lots of caffeine and stimulant ingredients. If we combine alcohol-energy drinks together, this is more dangerous than alcohol alone. Because there have more caffeine, so people who drink it will get more caffeine in the body, and it makes bad health. According to WA The Mix with Dangerous Risks: Energy Drinks and Alcohol, it said Physical effects, in addition to impaired judgment, the combination of a depressant and a stimulant can have a negative effect on the heart. Shortness of breath, rapid heartbeat, and heart attacks can result, (paragraph 5, WA). Moreover, people rely on energy drinks in many activities, such as gym, sports, and exercises. But they dont know that these drinks can be poisons that can kill them in many cases.

According to Geraint Three Deaths Linked to Energy Drink. 2 sportsmen have died after drinking the mixing of vodka and energy drinks, one died because of consuming of several cans after intensive gym workout, another 31 year old Swedish victim died after her heart stopped when she danced after drinking two cans of energy. So, all of these victims died just because of energy drinks. Drinking to boost your strength, awaking or having more active, it will link to be death and serious health problems. What about if they didnt consume energy drinks on that day? I think they werent a victim of this. Review again to this article, energy drinks are poisons that took those peoples lives. Same thing to Geraint in many studies and health report FDA has shown that 13 deaths over the past 4 years are linked to the caffeine in 5-hour energy drink. In 2012, 5 deaths of Monster Energy drink, 14-year-old girl who die after drinking two can of energy drink in 24 hours and a young man had heart stop after consuming 8 can of Red Bulls. If more people using canned energy in sport performance or party or just for thirsty, I believe that more people will die and itll become a serious issue that each person should concern and warning our own self to avoid of energy drinks. Energy dinks can influence to people on positive and negative effects. It can help to improve heart function, more attention in driving performance and recover energy in sport. But beside that energy drinks might make people lots of health problem such as paralysis, blood pressure, sleep disturbances, heart attack and so on. So, not because energy drinks can have some positive effects that we can rely on, but we need to avoid of these drinks until it makes we weak or have bad health reports. Therefore, we should to control and restrict ourselves when we use these drinks.
