Cities Jesus Visited

1. Bethlehem - Jesus is born in Bethlehem. (Luke 2:4) 2. Joseph takes Jesus to Egypt. City not named. (Matthew 2:14) 3. Nazareth - Jesus, now about 30 years old travels from his home-town of Nazareth in Galilee. (Luke 3:23) 4. Bethany - At the River Jordan, possibly near Bethany-across-the-Jordan, he is baptised by John the Baptist (Mt 3:13; Mk 1:9) 5. He goes in to the Judean Desert or wilderness to face the devil's temptation (Mt 4:1; Mk 1:12; Lk 4:1) 6. Bethany-across-the-Jordan, Bethabara - At the River Jordan near Bethany-acrossthe-Jordan, or Bethabara (Jn 1:28), and according to John's Gospel, Jesus calls his first five disciples (Jn 1:35). These include Philip, Andrew, and Simon Peter all from Bethsaida in Galilee (John 1:44) 7. Cana - Jesus returns north to Galilee with his disciples (John 1:43), and at a wedding in Cana, changes the water into wine - His first recorded miracle (John 2:1) 8. Capernaum - He continues on to Capernaum, on the northern shore of the Sea of Galilee with His mother, brothers and disciples, and stays there a short time (John 2:12) 9. Jerusalem - He travels south to Jerusalem for the Passover - the first one mentioned in the Gospels (John 2:13). There he drives the money-changers from the Temple for the first time (John 2:14). He also meets the Pharisee, Nicodemus (John 3:1) 10. Sychar - Jesus leaves for the countryside of Judea where His disciples baptise believers (John 3:22) Jesus and His disciples continue northwards from Judea (Jn 4:3), passing through the territory of Samaria (John 4:4). Near Sychar, Jesus meets the Samaritan woman at the well (John 4:5). Many Samaritans believe in him (John 4:39), after which he continues on to Galilee (John 4:43) 11. Cana - He reaches Galilee (Mathew 4:12; Mark 1:14; Luke 4:14; John 4:45), and back in Cana heals the official's son who lays sick in Capernaum (John 4:46)

12. Nazareth - Jesus returns to His home-town of Nazareth, and preaches in the synagogue (Luke 4:16). He is rejected for the first time (Luke 4:28) 13. Capernaum - Jesus moves to Capernaum (Mathew 4:13; Mark 1:21; Luke 4:31). According to the Synoptic Gospels, Jesus call His first disciples - perhaps only now to full-time service (Mathew 4:18; Mark 1:16; Luke 5:1). In Capernaum he heals the madman in the synagogue (Mark 1:23; Luke 4:33) and Peter's mother-in-law of her fever (Mathew 8:14; Mark 1:29; Luke 4:38) 14. Jerusalem - Jesus travels from Galilee south to Jerusalem for a Jewish festival possibly the Second Passover identified in the Gospels (John 5:1). At the Pool of Bethesda he heals the crippled man (John 5:2) 15. Galilee - Returning north to Galilee, Jesus heals the man with the shrivelled hand (Mathew 12:9; Mark 3:1; Luke 6:6) and many others (Mathew 12:15; Mark 3:7) 16. Capernaum - (Mathew 8:5; Luke 7:1) Jesus heals the Roman centurion's servant (Mathew 8:5; Luke 7:2) 17. Nain - Jesus continues preaching and healing in Galilee, and in Nain brings the widow's son back to life (Luke 7:11) 18. Gerasenes or Gadarenes - He sails across the Sea of Galilee (Mathew 8:18; Mark 4:35; Luke 8:22) and calms a storm (Mathew 8:24; Mark 4:37; Luke 8:23). Landing in the region of the Gerasenes (Mark 5:1; Luke 8:26) or Gadarenes (Mathew 8:28) in Gentile Decapolis - the Ten Towns or Cities, Jesus heals the madman in the story of the Gadarene Swine (Mathew 8:28; Mark 5:2; Luke 8:27) 19. Capernaum - The Twelve return to Capernaum from their mission (Mark 6:30, Luke 9:10) 20. Bethsaida - From Capernaum, they go off by boat with Jesus to a quiet place (Mark 6:32) near Bethsaida (Luke 9:10). Here he feeds the 5,000 (Mathew 14:14; Mark 6:33; Luke 9:11; John 6:5) 21. Gennesaret - The disciples return across the Sea of Galilee (Mathew 14:22; Mark 6:45), Jesus walking on the water to join them (Mathew 14:25; Mark 6:48; John 6:19). They land near the Plain of Gennesaret and Jesus heals many people there (Mathew 14:34; Mark 6:53).

22. Tyre and Sidon - Jesus retires from Galilee to the region of Tyre and Sidon in SyrianPhoenicia (Mt 15:21; Mk 7:24) where he heals the daughter of the Gentile Syrophoenician woman (Mt 15:22; Mk 7:25). 23. Decapolis - He leaves Syrian-Phoenicia via Sidon for Galilee (Mt 15:29) but travels through the Decapolis (Mk 7:31). In the Decapolis he heals the deaf and mute man (Mk 7:32) and feeds the 4,000 (Mt 15:32; Mk 8:1) The ten Cities of the Decapolis identified by Pliny the Elder are: Gerasa (Jerash) in Jordan Scythopolis (Beth-Shean) in Israel, the only city west of the Jordan River Hippos (Hippus or Sussita) in Israel Gadara (Umm Qais) in Jordan Pella (West of Irbid) in Jordan Philadelphia, modern day Amman, the capital of Jordan Al Husn in Jordan Capitolias (Beit Ras) in Jordan (Dion, Jordan) Canatha (Qanawat) in Syria Arabella (Irbid), in Jordan Raphana in Jordan Damascus 24. Dalmanutha Region - Jesus was asked by the Pharisees and Sadducees for a sign from heaven. Mark 8:10-12. He got into the boat with His disciples and went to the region of Dalmanutha. The Pharisees came and began to question Jesus. To test him, they asked him for a sign from heaven. He sighed deeply and said, Why does this generation ask for a sign? Truly I tell you, no sign will be given to it. 25. Caesarea Philippi - Peter declares that Jesus is the Messiah. Mark 8:27-29. Jesus and His disciples went on to the villages around Caesarea Philippi. On the way he asked them, Who do people say I am? They replied, Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets. But what about you? he asked. Who do you say I am?

Peter answered, You are the Messiah. 26. Jericho - Blind man healed. Mark 10:46-52. Then they came to Jericho. As Jesus and His disciples, together with a large crowd, were leaving the city, a blind man, Bartimaeus (which means son of Timaeus), was sitting by the roadside begging. When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout, Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me! Many rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, Son of David, have mercy on me! Jesus stopped and said, Call him. So they called to the blind man, Cheer up! On your feet! Hes calling you. Throwing his cloak aside, he jumped to his feet and came to Jesus. What do you want me to do for you? Jesus asked him. The blind man said, Rabbi, I want to see. Go, said Jesus, your faith has healed you. Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus along the road. POST-RESURRECTION APPEARANCES 27. Road to Emmaus Luke 24:13-32 Jesus appears to Cleopas and another disciple on the road to Emmaus. 28. Road to Damascus Acts 9:3-6 As he neared Damascus on his journey, suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him. He fell to the ground and heard a voice say to him, Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me? Who are you, Lord? Saul asked.

I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting, he replied. Now get up and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do.
