Instructions
* Attempt all questions.
* Paper 1 has Two Parts I and II. Each question of Part I carries 2 marks and each
question of part II caries 5 marks.

* Calculators and log tables are not permitted.

PART I
1. Four solid spheres each of diameter 5 cm and mass 0.5 kg are placed with their centers at the
corners of a square of side 4 cm. The moment of inertia of the system about the diagonal of the
square is N 10

, then calculate the value of N.

2. Steel wire of lenght L at 40C is suspended from the ceiling and then a mass m is hung from its free
end. The wire is cooled down from 40C to 30C to regain its original length L. The coefficient of
linear thermal expansion of the steel is 10

/C, Youngs modulus of steel is 10

and radius of
the wire is 1 mm. Assume that L>> diameter of the wire. Then calcualte the value of m in kg nearly.

3. The mass M shown in the figure oscillates in simple harmonic motion
with amplitude A. Find the amplitude of the point P.

4. Calculate the volume of a balloon filled with hydrogen gas, which will be sufficient to lift a load of 25
kg in air. Given that densities of air and hydrogen are 12.9 10

5. A cylindrical vessel of height 500 mm has an orifice (small hole) at its bottom. The orifice is initially
closed and water is filled in it upto height H. Now the top is completely sealed with a cap and the
orifice at the bottom is opened. Some water comes out from the orifice and the water level in the
vessel becomes steady with height of water column being 200 mm. Find the fall in height (in mm) of
water level due to opening of the orifice.

7. 5.6 liter of helium gas at STP is adiabatically compressed to 0.7 liter. Taking the initial temperature to
be T

. Calculate the work done in the process.

8. A point mass is subjected to two simultaneous sinusoidal displacements in x-direction, x

(t) = B sin (et + |) brings the
mass to a complete rest. Find the values of B and |.

9. A silver sphere of radius 1 cm and work function 4.7 eV is suspended from an insulating thread in
free-space. It is under continuous illumination of 200 nm wavelength light. As photoelectrons are
emitted, the sphere gets charged and acquires a potential. The maximum number of photoelectrons
emitted from the sphere is A 10
z
(where 1 < A < 10). Calculate the value of Z.

10. A student performed the experiment of determination of focal length of a concave mirror by u v
method using an optical bench of length 1.5 meter. The focal length of the mirror used is 24 cm. The
maximum error in the location of the image can be 0.2 cm. The 5 sets of (u, v) values recorded by
the student (in cm) are: (42, 56), (48, 48), (60, 40), (66, 33), (78, 39). Find the data set(s) that cannot
come from experiment and is (are) incorrectly recorded.

is trapped inside
a liquid of density (see figure). Assume that the bubble does not
exchange any heat with the liquid. The bubble contains n moles of gas.
The temperature of the gas when the bubble is at the bottom is T

height of the liquid is H and the atmospheric pressure is P

surface tension).

(a) When the gas bubble is at a height y from the bottom, then calculate its temperature.
(b) Calculate the buoyancy force acting on the gas bubble (Assume R is the universal gas constant).

12. A source emitting sound of frequency 180 Hz is placed infront of a wall at a distance of 2m from it. A
detector is also placed in front of the wall at the same distance from it. Find the minimum distance
between the source and the detector for which the detector detects a maximum of sound. Speed of
sound air = 360 m/s.

13. A metal rod AB of length 10x has its one end A in ice at 0C and the other end B in water at 100C. If
a point P on the rod is maintained at 400C, then it is found that equal amounts of water and ice
evaporate and melt per unit time. The latent heat of evaporation of water is 540 cal/g and latent heat
of melting of ice is 80 cal/g. If the point P is at a distance of x from the ice end A, find the value of .
[Neglect any heat loss to the surrounding.]

refractive index

radius of curvature R = 6 cm as shown. Consider oil to act as a
thin lens. An object S is placed 24 cm above water surface. The
location of its image is at x cm above the bottom of the tank.
Then find the value of x.
