Welcome to Professional Development in Digital Citizenship

COURSE DESCRIPTION This online course is designed to introduce educators to the basics of digital citizenship. Participants will gain knowledge of the nine elements of digital citizenship, and be able to implement digital citizenship policies and practices in their school districts and classrooms. Upon completion of this course, participants will have a clearer understanding of how digital citizenship can be employed in their educational settings to better facilitate the proper use of technology. INSTRUCTOR Tarena Ruff, MA Technology Coordinator Cell Phone: (305) 432-7350 Email: tr01388@georgiasouthern.edu or truff@mdc.edu TARGET AUDIENCE This course is intended for K-12 educators, school administrators, postsecondary school faculty and department heads, and any education professional preparing to integrate and incorporate technology in an online and/or face-to-face educational environment. TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS This course is administered entirely online, so it necessary to have the proper technology to access content, communicate with the instructor and peers, and submit assignments. To participate in this online course, the following are required:

Desktop and laptop computer updated operating system (Mac OS or Windows 7) Internet access (broadband recommended) Updated web browser (i.e. Internet Explorer, Firefox, Google Chrome) Word processing software (i.e. Microsoft Word)

PRE-REQUISTITES This course requires basic knowledge of how to use a computer, access the Internet, open web browsers, navigate web pages, and install web browser plugins.

STANDARDS Participants of this course will be able to demonstrate the following NETS for Teachers standards, taken from the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) http://www.iste.org/standards/nets-forteachers. Promote and Model Digital Citizenship and Responsibility Teachers understand local and global societal issues and responsibilities in an evolving digital culture and exhibit legal and ethical behavior in their professional practices.

4a. Advocate, model, and teach safe, legal, and ethical use of digital information and technology, including respect for copyright, intellectual property, and the appropriate documentation of sources 4b. Address the diverse needs of all learners by using learnercentered strategies providing equitable access to appropriate digital tools and resources 4c. Promote and model digital etiquette and responsible social interactions related to the use of technology and information 4d. Develop and model cultural understanding and global awareness by engaging with colleagues and students of other cultures using digital age communication and collaboration tools

GOALS By the end of this course, participants will be able to:


Define the nine elements of digital citizenship Understand the purpose of identifying the nine elements of digital citizenship Develop an acceptable use policy (AUP) that meets the needs of their learning institution

Communicate policies and procedures on the use of technology to administrators, educators, students, and parents. CREDITS Upon satisfactory completion of all assignments in this course, participants will earn a three (3) professional development credits.

EVAULATION Evaluation of your performance in this course will be based on the following:

GRADING CRITERIA Participants will not receive a letter grade in this course, but your overall performance will be evaluated based on the following point system: 100 90 points 89 70 points 69 0 points Above satisfactory Satisfactory Unsatisfactory

INTERACTIONS Interactions with the instructor and your peers will be conducted entirely online. You may post questions about the course on the message board contained in the online course management system. There will be three (3) online presentations that you are required to attend, and you are expected to post on the weekly discussion topics. EXPECATIONS Class participation Participants in this course are expected to participate in the weekly online topic discussions, the three online presentations, and offer helpful feedback to their peers. Time management This is a self-directed course, so we are expected to practice self-discipline, and schedule the appropriate time needed to successfully complete the course assignments. The instructor urges you to keep with the readings so that you do not fall behind. Late assignments will be accepted at the discretion of the instructor. Late assignments are subject to a 2-point deduction. Academic Honesty Integrity and honesty are the pillars of any institution of higher education. Therefore any plagiarism or cheating on any assignment, quiz or exam will result in total points lost for that particular assignment. A second violation will result in a grade of unsatisfactory for the course. Violation of these acts is serious and can result in your inability to receive professional development credits for the course.
