ADVANCED FUNCTION BLOCKS

LESSON 7

This is a series of smaller exercises that incorporate additional controls common to process control. The following exercises will also require more investigation in the on-line manuals on your part to create these function blocks. You may have to adjust tuning parameters to get these blocks to work.

SPLIT [Regulatory control/ Signal distributors] This function block allows an upstream function block to output to two different modules or function blocks. The two outputs can overlap to give a blending of steam and water, if used in that manner. Define the outputs so that MV1 is reverse acting and operates between 0-75% of the SPLIT MV range. Define the outputs so that MV2 is direct acting and operates between 25-100% of the SPLIT MV range.

On-line Manual Question: In the SPLIT Tuning Panel, there is an item called SW, what does it do and what should it be set to output to both PVIs?

RATIO [Regulatory control/ Signal setters] The RATIO block allows the user to define the relation between two flows. In this simulation you will create two PID function blocks, one with a flow of 0-100 GPM, and the other with a flow of 0-75 GPM. Use the On-line Manual to help build this function block and answer these questions. What does the RATIO SV do? Change the Gain in the RATIO block. What happens? Return the Gain to its initial value, and then change the Bias in the RATIO block. What happens?

SIGNAL SELECT [Regulatory control/ Signal selectors] There may be times when a process signal (high/ medium/ or low) is to be automatically selected and displayed. In the following simulation, use the function blocks created in the SPLIT exercise. You will create an AS-H to automatically select the higher of the two PVs and display that signal on a PVI attached to the selector block. What data items must be set to allow the block to automatically select the highest signal?

FUNC-VAR [Regulatory control/ Calculation] The FUNC-VAR function block allows a linearization table to be created for a non-linear device such as a cylindrical vessel. Create the simulation below and enter the data in the chart. On-line Manual Question: Referring to the data below: What does the X register do? What does the Y register do? What does SECT on the FUNC-VAR tuning panel refer to? What must SECT be set to for this block to work?

Enter the following data in the FUNC-VAR tuning panel.

X01 = 0.00 X02 = 12.50 X03 = 25.00 X04 = 37.50 X05 = 50.00 X06 = 62.50 X07 = 75.00 X08 = 87.50 X09 = 100.00

Y01 = 0.00 Y01 = 7.20 Y03 = 20.40 Y04 = 34.80 Y05 = 50.00 Y06 = 65.20 Y07 = 79.60 Y08 = 92.80 Y09 = 100.00

FOUNDATION FIELDBUS I/O - (FF-AI); (FF-AO) The input to the FF-AI block comes from the analog input function block in the Foundation Fieldbus transmitter. Basic settings of the FF-AI block include Tag, Tag Comment, Scale High and Low and Engineering Units. Detailed settings include Tag Mark, Alarm Level, Hierarchy and Security Level. On Figure 1 below FF-AI reflects the AI (Analog Input) function block inside the Flow Transmitter FT100, the PID function block resides in the CPU of the CS 3000 system and the FF-AO reflects the AO (Analog Output) function block inside the valve positioner FV100. On Figure 2 below FF-AI reflects the AI (Analog Input) function block inside the Flow Transmitter FT100, the FF-PID function block and the FF-AO function block reside inside the valve positioner FV100.
