O3b Networks approach

O3b Networks is creating new opportunities for mobile network operators and wireless ISPs by introducing a new MEO (Medium Earth Orbit) satellite network that makes 3G or WiMAX wireless backhaul over satellite a protable and efcient solution. For higher capacity wireless backhaul, especially for 3G and WiMAX rollouts, O3b Networks low-cost, low latency services will allow telcos and ISPs to offer affordable, high-speed Internet access services effectively bridging the digital divide between developed and emerging markets. Gilat Satellite Networks new line of MEO VSATs and gateway components is designed specically for O3b Networks MEO satellite network. The O3b Networks system offers ber performance over satellite, at prices comparable to ber in developed regions. By allowing direct connection between tier one ber networks and 3G Cellular/WiMAX towers, or directly connecting your towers with your core network, the O3b Networks system will change the economics of telecommunications infrastructure in the worlds fastest growing markets for communications services.

The challenges of 3G cellular backhaul

Widespread demand for cellular broadband is motivating mobile operators to roll out countrywide networks. It is estimated that backhaul capacity for cellular networks will need to increase four times to accommodate the demand for 3G services. Operators are however faced with a large initial capital outlay primarily due to the high speed transmission backbone required. Many regions in developing countries remain beyond the reach of terrestrial infrastructure as costs become all the more prohibitive to extend services to those communities. Most of those areas are simply beyond the reach of terrestrial infrastructure. GSM Voice backhaul over satellite has proven to be a cost-effective alternative when using robust compression and bandwidth sharing techniques. However, 3G/Wimax demands many times the bandwidth and implementation has thus been very challenging due to the associated space segment costs. Operators also have concerns about the network delays introduced by transmission times to geostationary satellites.

O3b Networks MEO satellite constellation transparently connects multiple Node B (BTS) Stations to RMCs and also allows RMC to MSC connections via satellite without changing the interface at either end. This enables cellular operators to quickly expand their wireless broadband services, even to previously unserved areas, without the dependency on line-of-sight microwave links. Service activation and ground equipment is scheduled for late 2010. The O3b Networks solution includes: Gilat 3G MEO IDU at each site Gilat 3G MEO ODU with unique dual self-pointing antenna O3b Networks satellite constellation Central Redundant Gilat hub at the operator MSC or at an O3b Networks Gateway facility

Lower latency for better performance

Newer 3G protocols (EVDO Rev. A/LTE/HSDPA) all have improved their latency by 5-10 times. With O3b Networks, operators can keep this important advantage because the system natively offers low latency performance. Low latency of less than 65ms for voice and video transmissions allows for centralization of core networking equipment. The network can support many topologies to eliminate double hops for trafc. This brings new efciencies for the network while improving the quality of the voice transmission. Even if the signal traverses a double hop, to the O3b Networks gateway and then back, the shorter uplink to a MEO satellite means that the total round trip takes no more than 130ms fully within the requirements for ITU voice signals and cellular broadband backhaul.

Transmission capacity without the complexity

The O3b network provides quick, anywhere connectivity. Meeting the high quality standards of mobile operators, Gilats 3G MEO terminal is an easy to install, exible solution with central control and real-time management. Extending services to accommodate higher trafc loads can be done as subscribers demand more from the network without having to visit any sites. O3b Networks could, for example, steer an additional spot beam over an area with existing coverage instantly doubling the capacity without requiring additional terminals. Expanding coverage across larger geographical areas, across countries, or multiple islands, can be done quickly and economically since additional sites require minimal additional infrastructure and almost no backhaul transmission planning. The O3b Networks satellite constellation will enable Mobile Data, Video and Voice services with capacities that far outstrip microwave & leased line whilst removing the need for Fiber or terrestrial back-haul infrastructure.

Bandwidth on Demand
As opposed to traditional satellite solutions such as SCPC, which occupy permanent bandwidth regardless of actual trafc, Gilats 3G MEO terminal uses Bandwidth on Demand (BoD) to dynamically allocate bandwidth. The result is signicant space segment savings and more efcient utilization as the geographic demands on your network shift from tower to tower. The bandwidth controller, located at the Gateway, continuously monitors trafc generated by each terminal, allocating bandwidth from a common pool to each 3G MEO VSAT according to real-time demand. Second and third bandwidth controllers, along with added space segment capacity can easily be added to double or triple the capacity to your system as your subscribers increase. Using BoD presents a major advantage over traditional satellite technology, which uses a predened busy hour to determine permanent bandwidth required to ensure satisfactory service. BoD results in up to 80% savings in space segment usage.

With O3b Networks the cost of deploying a new 3G site using satellite backhaul is signicantly lower than the traditional GEO satellite backhaul. The cost of the O3b based 3G site will be comparable to that of microwave based backhaul without line of sight constraints or the need for proximity to ber infrastructure

Network simplication centralized core

Multi-Country mobile operators can use the O3b Networks Satellite system to simplify the network architecture into a single core and then mange base stations across borders. The switching and routing intelligence of mobile infrastructure is moving steadily to the edge of the network. When this is combined with O3b Networks unique ability to backhaul aggregation nodes to switching centers (with ultra low latency) the economic advantages of a centralized, single core network architecture in multi-country mobile operations yields a signicant OPEX advantage. The O3b Networks satellite system heralds a previously unavailable opportunity to consolidate your assets into a single core network.

Summary - next generation backhaul for 3G systems Microwave radio-based network connections Special events and emergency coverage
Mobile Operators that need to provide additional coverage and capacity for special events often have to conduct timely and expensive line of sight surveys, lengthy planning, testing and integration to offer services in a relatively small commercial window. In many cases, the pressure to provide the additional capacity is to reduce churn, increase brand awareness and with minimum overall commercial benet. With O3b Networks and Gilat you can instantly add capacity virtually anywhere on new towers within the coverage area with no line of sight surveys or other restrictions. This reduces the operational burden of setting up for special events but also allows the operator to deploy the system at short notice where services have been interrupted or in the event of a major outage such as natural disasters etc. As Mobile Operators continue to enrich the users experience with higher data rates in WCDMA, CDMA, & WiMAX the requirements of Aggregation Nodes are becoming increasingly diverse with multiple client interfaces, trafc types and increasing bandwidth. With link capacities scaling from 1Mb to 10Gb, the O3b Networks satellite system enables mobile operators to upgrade the backhaul to match the high bandwidth access network. This unique advantage will allow Mobile operators to avoid the severe bandwidth and line of sight limitations of microwave, aggregate more trafc and reduce the number of aggregation nodes in the network. O3b Networks and Gilat continue to work with Mobile Operators all over the world that are planning to offer higher access speeds and extend the geographic reach of networks to enable more access for the Other 3 Billion.
