O3b Networks MEO satellite constellation transparently connects multiple Node B (BTS) Stations to RMCs and also allows RMC to MSC connections via satellite without changing the interface at either end. This enables cellular operators to quickly expand their wireless broadband services, even to previously unserved areas, without the dependency on line-of-sight microwave links. Service activation and ground equipment is scheduled for late 2010. The O3b Networks solution includes: Gilat 3G MEO IDU at each site Gilat 3G MEO ODU with unique dual self-pointing antenna O3b Networks satellite constellation Central Redundant Gilat hub at the operator MSC or at an O3b Networks Gateway facility
Bandwidth on Demand
As opposed to traditional satellite solutions such as SCPC, which occupy permanent bandwidth regardless of actual trafc, Gilats 3G MEO terminal uses Bandwidth on Demand (BoD) to dynamically allocate bandwidth. The result is signicant space segment savings and more efcient utilization as the geographic demands on your network shift from tower to tower. The bandwidth controller, located at the Gateway, continuously monitors trafc generated by each terminal, allocating bandwidth from a common pool to each 3G MEO VSAT according to real-time demand. Second and third bandwidth controllers, along with added space segment capacity can easily be added to double or triple the capacity to your system as your subscribers increase. Using BoD presents a major advantage over traditional satellite technology, which uses a predened busy hour to determine permanent bandwidth required to ensure satisfactory service. BoD results in up to 80% savings in space segment usage.
With O3b Networks the cost of deploying a new 3G site using satellite backhaul is signicantly lower than the traditional GEO satellite backhaul. The cost of the O3b based 3G site will be comparable to that of microwave based backhaul without line of sight constraints or the need for proximity to ber infrastructure
Summary - next generation backhaul for 3G systems Microwave radio-based network connections Special events and emergency coverage
Mobile Operators that need to provide additional coverage and capacity for special events often have to conduct timely and expensive line of sight surveys, lengthy planning, testing and integration to offer services in a relatively small commercial window. In many cases, the pressure to provide the additional capacity is to reduce churn, increase brand awareness and with minimum overall commercial benet. With O3b Networks and Gilat you can instantly add capacity virtually anywhere on new towers within the coverage area with no line of sight surveys or other restrictions. This reduces the operational burden of setting up for special events but also allows the operator to deploy the system at short notice where services have been interrupted or in the event of a major outage such as natural disasters etc. As Mobile Operators continue to enrich the users experience with higher data rates in WCDMA, CDMA, & WiMAX the requirements of Aggregation Nodes are becoming increasingly diverse with multiple client interfaces, trafc types and increasing bandwidth. With link capacities scaling from 1Mb to 10Gb, the O3b Networks satellite system enables mobile operators to upgrade the backhaul to match the high bandwidth access network. This unique advantage will allow Mobile operators to avoid the severe bandwidth and line of sight limitations of microwave, aggregate more trafc and reduce the number of aggregation nodes in the network. O3b Networks and Gilat continue to work with Mobile Operators all over the world that are planning to offer higher access speeds and extend the geographic reach of networks to enable more access for the Other 3 Billion.
