One form of plagiarism is the near fabrication of another persons ideas and then representing them off as ones own. Sometimes on drawing an analogy between two different books it can be seen that where one of them derived inspiration from the other, it still later on gains its own identity. Taking inspiration from other books without stealing their original ideas is not considered plagiarism that is as long as the author agrees that he/she was inspired by them. Contrary to popular belief Divergent is not the complete imitation of The Hunger Games, even though a few ideas are similar. When we compare the two novels we can see that despite Divergent being inspired by The Hunger Games, it still certifies its own identity. Both the novels are set in dystopian societies. The Hunger Games is established in North America, in a nation known as Panem (A1). This nation consists of the Capitol, where Panems government is located, and twelve surrounding districts (A1). Every year two children between the age of twelve and eighteen are chosen from each district after the reaping (an annual choosing ceremony) to participate in the Hunger Games (A1). The Hunger Games is an annual event in which the tributes (participants) must fight to death, until one victor remains (A1). In Divergent humanity has organized itself into five factions, each of which has its own core value (A2). Abnegation (the selfless), Candor (the honest), Amity (the peaceful), Erudite (the knowledgeable) and Dauntless (the brave) (A2). Each year all the sixteen year olds are required to give an aptitude test to determine which faction they would belong to for the rest of their lives, they must also attend a Choosing Ceremony (A2). Near the end of the Dark Days District 13 was cast out of the nation by the Capitol, before which they decided to leave each other alone under the conviction of there being a war otherwise (A1). At the end of the series District 13 tired of the hardships that it has to go through goes at war with the Capitol along with the rebels of other districts (A1). While

Factionless are the people cast out by the five factions because they think these people are not good enough to reside in their factions (A2). For years hatred has been growing inside the Factionless for being exiled from the factions and at the end of book two they attack the factions (A2). Katniss Everdeen the protagonist of The Hunger Games lives a very hard life and started taking care of her family after her fathers death (A1). She is an outdoorsy kind of girl and usually goes hunting and fishing with her best friend Gale Hawthorne (A1). Katniss chooses to volunteer in place of her sister to enter the Hunger Games (A1). During the Games she survives mostly because of the tricks she picked up while hunting in the woods near District 12 (A1). Whereas Beatrice "Tris" Prior the main character of Divergent is short heighted and reasonably attractive (A2). Her family is Abnegation but Tris is always struggling to be as selfless as her family (A2). During the aptitude test Tris gets to know that she is a rare subset of the population known as Divergent (A2). During the Choosing Ceremony she decides to follow her heart and be selfish, hence abandoning her family and joining Dauntless (A2). There is a love triangle in The Hunger Games, Peeta Mellark the other tribute from District 12 and Gale Hawthorne are fighting for Katnisss love while she is undecided about her feelings (A1). She strings them both along and gets Peeta captured by the Capitol, when it turns rogue (A1). On the other hand there is only one guy in Divergent. Tobias Eaton also known as Four is the instructor who trains the new Dauntless initiates, he continuously tries to help Tris through her training (A2). She starts to develop feelings for him and its evident that he also has some sort of feelings for her (A2). They eventually get together and Four is adamant about protecting her from the Erudite not caring about what it means for him. Soon after she learns that he too is Divergent (A2).

With the help of President Coin, District 13s president, an emotionally unstable Katniss decides to save Peeta after finding out that hes being tortured by the Capitol (A1). A rescue mission from District 13 brings Peeta back but Katniss finds out his memories have been tampered with and that he wants to kill her, believing she is an evil mutant made by the Capitol (A1). Katniss becomes even more distraught determines to kill President Snow, the president of Panem (A1). The Erudite decide to kill the Abnegation leaders because they were coming very close to uncovering some secrets which would have caused havoc in their stable society (A2). Tris and Four steal the chip which is controlling the minds of all the Dauntless causing them to harm the Abnegation (A2). Then along with the Factionless they attack the Erudite where they discover some dark secrets and find out that the only way of saving their society and the outside world is with the help of the Divergent (A2). Although some ideas in the books are similar but still the major ideas are completely different. In The Hunger Games there is one plot after another while in Divergent the author builds up the story to one main thing. Both the books along with being wonderfully written have their own identity and are without a question classics of this era. Sources 1. The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins 2.
