SUMMARY: One fine morning in the month of January 2013 we formed a team of four students named team TEAM LAKSHYA to participate in SAE NIS EFFICYCLE-2013, with a purpose in mind to design and fabricate an efficient three-wheeled electric human powered vehicle. All the team members were assigned multilateral goals so as to allow every member to participate in versatile manner and equally learn all the aspects of designing and fabrication. The vehicle frame has been designed keeping in mind the factors such as strength, comfort, overall cost, ease of maneuverability and safety of the driver. The frame has a unique double rod design to distribute the load and provide strength. The vehicle has two 26 * 1.5 inches tire rim set in the front and one 28 * 1.5 inch set at the rear; the selection is done keeping in view the Indian roads. It is provided with disc brakes on the front wheels and rim brake at the rear. The front driver controls the vehicle. We have used single speed sprocket at the wheels to provide a consistent speed and torque to satisfy the driver requirements. The size of tire gives a shorter turning radius to the vehicle. The designing is entirely carried out in Dassault’s Solid Works.

INNOVATIVE FEATURES:

Double head tube design of the frame to provide strength, which holds the heavy load of drivers and 50 kg, sand bag as well as reduces vibrations. Variable thickness tubes to satisfy different load distribution on the vehicle. It reduces the weight and cost of the vehicle. It increases the speed of the vehicle. Suspension System The vehicle has separate fork suspension on front wheels, with a shock absorber at the rear wheel to increase the riding comfort. Shield We are trying to add a protective covering on the fairing to protect the front driver from any kind of driving intrusions such as rain, dust etc.

COMMERCIAL VIABILITY:

Easy handling: for people of all age groups. Older people can comfortably drive in recumbent position and can also avoid pedaling as per choice.

Easy steering: Lesser weight, higher strength and hence easy to steer in crowded areas in day to day life, and also suitable for long distance rides with minimum effort. The vehicle is provided with articulated steering mechanism for the rear driver.

Comfort: The recumbent riding position reduces strain on the body, making it particularly suitable for long rides and touring. It can be very easy on the neck, wrists, hands, arms, shoulders, lower back, and ischial tuberosities ("sit bones"), foot rests for front driver,

Lesser Effort: power available from both the drivers reduces the net effort from each driver during covering a given distance

Versatile application: means of transport in short duration, healthy source of recreation.

Low maintenance cost and compact structure

Eco-friendly vehicle: causes no pollution and hence does not harm the environment.

Health: helps in maintaining a good health and fitness for office and school goers. Regular cycling maintains proper body weight and optimum blood pressure.

Accessories: the vehicle is provided with a music system, a tool box, first aid box, a lock, a water bottle mount, adjustable seat, speedometer, alternator, battery etc. Aesthetic looking partial fairing

ASSUMPTIONS:

The designing was started assuming following points:

Tandem Tadpole configuration is selected as it provides high speed, light steering, and easy pick up, maneuverability.

Frame design is double-headed tube design and the distance between the two tubes is more than 3 inches to increase the strength.

The design is prepared keeping in mind the standard parts available in the market like front wheel forks, tires.

An ideal frame can be prepared only if sum of resultant loads balance each other.

BASIC DESIGN PROCEDURE:

First of all appropriate space is allotted to different load entities such as drivers, batteries and sand bag. Next the frame is designed such that the load is supported without failure. Double head tube design is applied to

provide stability, strength, light weight design, and high speed. We also kept in mind the dimensions of the standard parts available such as tires, shock absorbers. Vehicle is given single wheel drive at the rear wheels.

We have designed a rear wheel drive; i.e all the power generated will be transmitted to the rear wheel. This is done in order to balance out the loads being carried by front and rear tires, while the front wheels sustain the steering loads, the rear wheels sustain the acceleration. It also helps in better acceleration on slippery roads. In

the above figure the power from the front sprocket (blue in color) and the power from the rear sprocket (Pink colored) are given to the rear wheel. This mismatch in speeds of two drivers is handled by a free wheel in between the two sprockets; the drive from motor (orange colored) is given directly to the rear sprocket. A is a lot of experimentation still going into the transmission system and there may be certain changes during actual implementation.

STEERING DESIGN:

A four bar link mechanism is used for steering the front wheels. As per the rules. It is designed to have a shorter turning radius and assists driver’s in cornering.

shorter turning radius and assists driver’s in cornering. METHOD OF IMLPEMENTATION: First of all market survey

METHOD OF IMLPEMENTATION:

First of all market survey was done to check the available parts in the Indian market. A lot of research work was also done on the Internet. After interaction with various suppliers we drafted a conceptual two- dimensional design. We selected a TANDEM TADPOLE configuration since it suited our requirement of an IDEAL FRAME. This was followed by selection of wheel rim keeping in view its aerodynamics. Next we selected transmission system, braking system due to its stable and light weight structure. Since the vehicle was expected to undergo variable stresses we incorporated pipes of various thicknesses.

USP’s In addition to the mentioned features we are incorporating a suspension lock at the rear wheel; this is done in order to increase the acceleration on smooth roads. We are also trying to implement a returnable steering mechanism on the front wheels in order to decrease the maneuvering effort of the front driver.Shock absorber system on all the wheels, semi recumbent driving position guarantees unmatchable drive comfort. The aesthetic looking fairing will hopefully prove to be fruitful in its marketing.

ERGONOMICS AND SAFETY

The vehicle is designed ergonomically for an adult driver of normal height and weight. The front is provided with semi recumbent seating position in order to avoid fatigue even after driving long distance driving while the rear driver is provided with upright position in order to increase acceleration capability. Vehicle is also

well equipped with safety features like disc brakes, horn, belt, light, rear view mirror, shock absorber. Roll over system for each driver.
