Students do this exercise in pairs. Those that finish first can find some examples of the parts of speech in the dictionary. Answers: adjective, noun, preposition, adverb, phrasal verb, pronoun, verb
Exercise 2

This type of passage comes up in the Use of English paper. Encourage the students to actively use LDOCE for checking their work in this exercise, so that they can also see if they have the right form of the word. Ask them to read the definition and examples to make sure the word fits the context. Answers: frightened, according, hatred, struck, speaking, extremely, prisoner, knew
Exercise 3

A word-building exercise, which also suggests a method of storing new language more effectively. The dictionary helps students increase their knowledge of other forms of the given words through example sentences and related entries. Students work in pairs to find the new words; monitor them as they work. Answers for second column: according, hatred, struck, speaking, extremely, prisoner, knew; answers for third column will vary - check LDOCE if necessary. Make sure the students look at the model sentences in LDOCE and understand them before they write their own sentences.
Exercise 4

Students practise the Use of English transformation exercises. Show them how to look up the word they have to use to transform the sentence in LDOCE. Make sure they read the example sentence. Explain how to find the phrase need to do something in the dictionary example - explain that phrases like this in bold show typical grammatical constructions. Answers: 1) He described his wonderful trip to the Caribbean. 2) Our parents wont let us take a boat out on the lake. 3) Theres been hardly any work to do recently. 4) Im not used to having a cooked breakfast 5) Id rather not go out tonight.
