Mini Lesson Planning Tool for Integrating Technology Title of Lesson: Recognize and Name Letters B, C, & D Curriculum/Content

Area: Reading Grade Level: Kindergarten PURPOSE/OBJECTIVES: The student will be able to 1. Recognize the letters b, c, and d in print and with foam letters. 2. Name and trace the letters b, c, and d. CURRICULUM STANDARDS: (Reading) Demonstrate understanding of the organization and basic features of print. Recognize and name all upper- and lowercase letters of the alphabet. [RF.K.1d] ACTIVITIES: Engagement: - TTW give the student an overview of what they will be doing and tell him that they are going to talk about the letters b, c, and d. - TTW play these YouTube videos on the iPad: ABC Song: The Letter B, B is For Boogie by Storybots; ABC Song: The Letter C, Crazy for C by StoryBots; and ABC Song: The Letter D, Dee Doodley Do by StoryBots. Teaching: - TTW pull up the Penultimate app on the iPad and show the page with pictures of bats, candy and a dress. TTW ask the student what each picture is, write the word next to each, and then have the student use his finger to underline the letters b, c, and d in each word. Opportunity for Practice: - TTW open the ABC Tracing app on the iPad and go to the page for letter b. TTW ask the student to touch a color on the left side and then use his finger to trace all the upper- and lowercase Bs on the page. TTW tell the student what sound the letter b makes and then say a word that starts with that sound. TTW ask the student to think of a word that starts with the b sound. (Repeat the same process for letters c and d, allowing the student to pick a color and trace the letters.) Assessment: - TTW pull out the letter chart and matching foam letters for b, c, and d. TTW hold up each letter and ask the student to say each letter and its sound and then place that letter in the correct place on the letter chart. TTW complete the Recognize/name letters portion of the checklist. - TTW ask the student to hand her first letter b, then c, then d. TTW complete the Hand correct letter to teacher portion of the checklist. Closure: - TTW pull up the ABC Tracing app on her iPad again and go to the blank drawing page. TTW ask the student to pick a color and draw a B with his finger. TTW then ask the student to name a word that starts with that letter. TTW prompt the student if needed and then write that word on the page. TTW ask the student to underline the letter B and then erase the page. (Repeat this process for letters C and D.)

Answer the following questions: 1. Do I know how to use the technology tool(s) that will be used by my students? Yes. I practiced using this technology and made sure that everything worked correctly before giving the lesson. 2. What technology skills do my students already have that are needed for this lesson? This student already knows how to use his finger to write on the iPad and open and close apps. 3. What technology skills will they need to learn to complete this lesson successfully? This student will need to learn how to navigate and use the app called ABC Tracing.

4. What is the appropriate setting for this lesson (classroom, lab, library, home)? Is this setting available for my students to use? Any setting is appropriate for this lesson, because

the iPad is portable. For this lesson, the student and I sat at a table in the hallway so that he would not get distracted by the classroom noise. This student has cochlear implants. 5. What tools and resources will I need? (List of all Web sites, specific software and hardware, and other needs.) I will need an iPad, YouTube, the Penultimate app, a picture of a bat, candy, and a dress pasted onto a page in Penultimate prior to the lesson, the ABC Tracing app, an alphabet chart with foam letters kit, and the Recognizing and Naming Letters Checklist. 6. How much time do I need to allow for this lesson? I will need to allow 30 minutes for this lesson. 7. Who can help me with the planning and/or implementation of this lesson? My cooperating teacher (a resource teacher) can help me with the planning and implementation of this lesson, because she knows the student well and knows what he needs to work on. She can help me redirect the student if he gets distracted during the lesson. The students classroom teacher may also help with the planning of this lesson, because she knows what the student needs to work on and has materials for me to use if I need them. 8. How will I assess the students learning? I will assess the students learning by completing a checklist on his ability to recognize and name the letters b, c, and d (the checklist is posted below). The student is expected to complete the items on the checklist with 100 percent accuracy in order to master the skill.
