Karin Lord Professor Jessica Camargo English 111 1 November 2013 Joining Business Administration The role of business administrators has changed drastically over the years, allowing people to be more free in choosing the section of business they want to go into. From giant corporations to individually owned business, every operation needs skilled administrators in order to succeed. Based off of thebestcolleges.org business administration is number five on a list from 1-10 for the best college programs, with one being the best. An administrator over sees part of a business such as operations, economics, human resources, logistics, marketing, management and they could even be owners of their own business. Even though individuals can choose which outlet of business administration they want to go into, this profession is ever changing, with a wide range of various job opportunities and always open for advancement. . One major benefit to business administration is the having the knowledge and ability to own your own business. Every successful business creates something of value and the best businesses in the world are the ones that create the most value for other people. Having people constantly surrounding you and supporting you is a plus in anything you do, especially in the business industry. Everywhere you turn there is a new adventure, just waiting to be unraveled. Also if you like working from home, 52% of small business are home-based. The fastest growing sector for freelance business in 2011 included auto repair shops, beauty salons and dry cleaners. The ability to have more control over personal time as well as their business schedules are just two of many reasons people have chosen to operate home-based firms. In addition to the freedom of time constraints, freedom from extensive prices of renting warehouse space or leasing another facility is another attraction of home-based businesses. Another intriguing benefit to owning your own business is that you can actually look at the market and see where it could be going next. You don't necessarily have to stick with the first thing that pops into your head. You have the ability to determine what direction you go in, and you have the supporting evidence to back up your decision. There are some things in life that will never be phased out; such as health care administrators, science, business associates, auto mechanics, pet trainers and that's just to name a few. In Forbes online magazine, Jason Nazar makes light of some very interesting statistics about small business in particular noting that small businesses have generated over 65 % of the newest jobs since 1995. The business field is constantly growing; currently there are almost 28 million small business in the United States and over 22 million of these are self employed with

no additional payroll or employees. With over 543,000 new business starting up each month, over half of those will continue to stay in business at least 15 years or more. Pretty good odds compared to some of the other fields that are out there. (Nazar) Employment growth in the business field is projected to grow 15% from 2010 to 2020. Jobs for facility managers and contract administers are just two of the positions that are expected to be leading positions in the projected growth. The growing market for companies going green will make facility managers one of the higher paying positions over the years, their job is to focus on a buildings energy efficiency and their impact on the environment. Don't expect landing a job to be easy, strong competition for the limited number of higher level management positions will lead companies to hire the best of the best. However, job openings for applicants with the ability to manage a wide range of responsibilities are expected to have greater opportunities for employment. Money, money, money, money- MONEY! (O'Jays, For the Love of Money) Everywhere you go you hear people asking how much something is or what someone spent when they went out shopping with their best friend. Benjamin Franklin stated "Money has never made man happy, nor will it, there is nothing in its nature to produce happiness. The more of it one has the more one wants." and as true as that statement is, there isn't one person in this world that wouldn't agree with him. Money is an important part of why we get a job, whether it be because we have a family to support or if it's just you and your dog- every human being needs money to survive and replenish their basic human needs. Adlai Stevenson Agrees, "Understanding human needs is half the job of meeting them." Everyone is cautious about the amount of money they spend compared to how much they make and they even base what job they get off of the amount of money they are offered. Imagine making $49,200 right out of college, just as an assistant administrator. The lowest making $39,600 and the highest making $61,100 (April 2012 salary survey developed by the National Association of Colleges and Employers). How about if you were making $77,890 per year as an Administrative Service Manager- that equals out to around $37.45 an hour (Occupational Outlook Handbook). There is always room for advancement in most of your larger companies as well, even if you don't start at the salary you would like, just know that if you keep your head in the game and show your boss that you are the best at what you do you could even break through that barrier of the salary you once dreamed of. As Henry Fielding said, one thing you need to be mindful of " Make money your God and it will plague you like the devil." As a current Business Administration Student at Rowan Cabarrus Community College, my personal plan after graduation is to open my own bar. Just as Stan Lee said "With great power comes great responsibility." which is still true for owning a bar. Having your own bar means you have to be extremely responsible and mature. There is a lot that goes into owning your own business; you have to purchase liability insurance, develop a marketing strategy, obtain the proper beer and liquor licenses, ensure you have the proper bar tending tools, secure vendors, determine transportation for intoxicated guests, and most importantly get a security team

together. Nobody said it was going to be easy, but it is possible. With a lot of time and effort this bar will be one of the greatest in the Charlotte region! There is no ceiling in this job, the sky is the limit, but it is up to you to determine how high you want to go. For me, I simply want to be a bar owner with my fianc and make sure that people can drink and have a good time, but at the end of the night they make it home safe. Personally my reason goes beyond the money and fame, but safety. Safety is one thing in my life that is very important and if you think down deep enough there is something inside of you that you can't stop thinking about that is most important to you and you would do anything to achieve that. Go after that goal you have set for yourself or that dream you have been thinking about for the past couple of years. You are young and you have a long life ahead of you, don't let anyone or anything get in the way "If you can dream it, you can do it" my manager always says.
