I will call them to attention once I have the power point set up and the handouts passed out. The handouts are differentiated. Some students receive a list of 8 words. A small group of the students have been struggling with the full lists. They will receive a modified list of only 5 words to know for the week. The students with the modified list understand that not all the words we go over will be on their list. All of the students know to underline the root and circle the prefi es and suffi es as I go over the words. !or the "onors class# we also talk about the part of speech of each word. Good morning, class. Take out a piece of paper and write down all the different prefixes and suffixes you can remember. Well review these before we continue with this weeks root study. I will give students a chance to review. Then# I will write down some of the word parts that they remember. ..5 Ste!s 6=0 min7 .ntroduce students to t8e )ords The root for this week is log. !og can mean word or speech. "t can also mean study, reason, or order. #ometimes, we use this root as a word. $or instance, you can keep a log, or a record of something put into

words. %efore we go over these words as a class, " want you all to underline the root in each word and then circle the prefixes and suffixes. This serves as another assessment of student knowledge. As we go through the words on the power point# I will have student volunteers come to the board and underline and circle the words as appropriate. The first word is apology. The root is log. &"ave students underline this as I underline it on the board$ The prefix is apo and the suffix is y. %"ave class circle these$ 'n apology is a word of regret., or a word of feeling sorry for an error or offense. (emember, when you are studying these definitions this week, choose some key words in the definition to memori)e. What do you think is a key word in this definition* %&ossible answers' (regret#) (feeling sorry)$ #ince an apology is a thing, it is a noun. The next word is apologies. *nderline the root. +ircle the prefi (apo.) This word is a plural version of apology, meaning that it is more than one apology. The suffix of this word, though, is a variation of our suffix s. This time, it is ies. There is a rule that when a noun ends in a y, you change it to ies to make the word plural. +ircle (ies.) What do you notice is different between this definition and the last* %I want them to notice the change from (word) to (words) in the definition# signifying that this word is plural.$ This word is also a noun. +ow, we have the word biologist. *nderline the root (log#) and circle (bio) and (ist.) !og is the root. The prefix of this word is bio. We talked about this prefix at the very beginning of the year. ,oes anyone remember what it means* %,io - life$ This suffix is new, though. The suffix ist means a person who performs an action. ' biologist is a person who speciali)es in the study of life. When we say life, we normally mean life of all sorts of organisms. %iologists study plants, animals, even fungi. This word is a person, which makes it a noun. The next word is geologist. *nderline (log#) and circle (geo) and (ist.) !ike a biologist, a geologist is also a person who performs an action. -owever, in this word, the prefix geo means earth. Therefore, a geologist is a person who studies the earth. Things that a geologist would study are earth.uakes and different land and water features. ' geologist is also a person, so this is a noun. We also have the word logical. *nderline (log#) and circle (ical.) !ogical means reasonable. /an anyone give me an example or another definition of something this is logical* %possible answer' something that makes sense$ !ogical is a word that describes something, which means that it is an ad0ective. 1ur next word is illogical. This word is the opposite, or antonym, of logical. *nderline (log#) and circle (il) and (ical.) il means not. The definition of this word is not reasonable, or something that does not make sense. "llogical is also ad0ective.

We have two more words on our list. "f you notice, the words this week form pairs. 'pology and apologies are similar. 1ne word is the plural version of the other. %iologist and geologist and two different types of scientists. 1ne studies life, and the other studies earth. !ogical and illogical are both antonyms of each other. The last pair on our list is monolog and dialog. 2onolog means a long speech given by one person. *nderline (log#) and circle (mono.) 2ono means one. 2onologs normally happen in plays, when one character talks to the audience. ' monolog is another thing, so it is a noun. 1ur last word, related to monolog is dialog. ' dialog is an exchange of words between people3 or a discussion. "n this word, the prefix di means two. *nderline (log#) and circle (di) and (a.) When you wrote your short stories, you wrote dialogs, parts where two of the characters talked to one another. ,ialog is also a noun. %efore we wrap up our root study, lets review the prefixes and suffixes for this week. %io means life. Geo means earth. "l means not. ,i means two. "st means a person who performs an action. # makes a noun plural. .esson +loser' 's you all know, your homework tonight is to make flashcards of all the words. 're there any words that are still confusing for you 4 that you dont think youd be able to use in a sentence* 1n the same sheet of paper you used for our warm4up, please write down any words that are still confusing for you 4 we will talk more about them this week before $ridays .ui).
