Cloud Lesson Plan Name: Victoria Fazio Beieler Subject/Concept: Weather: clouds/ Writing Grade Level: 3rd grade

Date of Lesson: December 03, 2013 Standards/Benchmarks/GLEs Grade: 3 # 49: Describe climate patterns from recorded weather conditions over a period of time (ESS-E-A4). ELA-2-E4: Using narration, description, exposition, and persuasion to develop compositions (e.g., stories, letters, poems, logs) (1, 4) OBJECTIVES: TSW identify the different types of clouds from different PowerPoint presentation examples. TSW take a nature walk outside of the classroom and will identify the different types of clouds in the sky. TSW create a fictional short story about one of the clouds from the nature walk. INTRODUCTION/ANTICIPATORY SET/SET INDUCTION/FOCUSING EVENT/MOTIVATION/ENGAGEMENT: TTW state the objective of the lesson, which is identifying the different types of clouds. TTW present a short PowerPoint presentation on clouds. PROCEDURES/CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT/EXPERIENCES/ACTIVITIES: Instructional Input/Procedures: 1. TTW ask the students what a cloud is (a visible collection of particles of water or ice suspended in the air, usu. at an elevation above the earth's surface). 2. TTW ask what the most common cloud types are (cirrocumulus, cirrus, altocumulus, altostratus, stratus, cumulus, stratocumulus, and cumulonimbus). Guided Practice/Activity: 1. TTW display and read several examples of the different cloud types. 2. TTW ask the students to identify the type of cloud (calling on students who raise their hands). Transition Statement:

TTW tell the students that they are going to be famous explorers and have to document their adventure. INDEPENDENT PRACTICE: 1. 2. 3. 4. TTW take class on a quick nature walk. TSW use his/her previous knowledge to correctly identify the types on clouds in the sky. TSW will be responsible for picking out a cloud to write about. TSW will return to his/her classroom to begin writing a short story on their cloud adventure. 5. TSW type his/her finished story on storybird.com. 6. TSW will present his/her project to the class. CLOSURE/QUESTIONING: TTW ask the students what they learned (calling on students who raise their hand). Additional cloud related activities will be provided to early finishers. Repeated directions and individual assistance will be provided for academic needs.
