Now known as the Byzantine empire, the eastern half of the Roman empire survived until A.D. 1453. The emperor Justinian tried to reconquer areas of the western empire that had been lost.
The Byzantine empire declined slowly as parts of it were conquered by Slavs, Arabs, and Turks.
