GENERAL DENTAL SERVICES FOR ENROLLED CHILDREN
Information for parents about Fluoride Varnish Why do we recommend putting fluoride varnish on childrens teeth? Tooth decay is one of the most common preventable diseases seen in children. Children as young as 12-18 months can get cavities. Cavities in baby teeth can cause pain and even prevent children from being able to eat, speak, sleep and learn properly. Children do not lose all their baby teeth until they are about 12 to 13 years old. What is fluoride varnish? Fluoride varnish is a protective coating that is painted on teeth to help prevent new cavities and to help stop cavities that have already started. Is fluoride varnish safe? Yes, fluoride varnish can be used on babies from the time they have their first teeth. Only a very small amount of fluoride varnish is used. This method of providing fluoride to teeth has been used in Europe for more than 30 years. Fluoride varnish is approved by the FDA and is endorsed by the American Dental Association. How is it put on the teeth? The varnish is painted on the teeth. It is quick and easy to apply and does not have a bad taste. There is no pain, but your child may cry just because babies and children dont like having things put in their mouths especially by people they dont know! Your childs teeth may be yellow after the fluoride varnish is painted on, but the yellow color will come off when you brush your childs teeth tomorrow. How long does the fluoride last? The fluoride coating will work best if it is painted on the teeth 3-4 times a year. Las caries es una de las enfermedades preventibles mas comunes vista en los nios. Los nios pequeos desde los 12-18 meses pueden tener cavidades. Las cavidades en los dientes de leche pueden causar dolor y aun hasta evitar a los nios a poder comer, hablar, dormir y aprender apropiadamente. Los nios no pierden todos sus dientes de leche hasta que tienen como de 12 a 13 aos de edad. Que es el esmalte de fluoruro? El esmalte de fluoruo es una capa protectora que es pintada sobre los dientes para ayudar a prevenir nuevas cavidades y para ayudar a detener a las cavidades que ya hallan comenzado. Es el esmalte de fluoruro seguro? Si, el esmalte de fluoruro puede ser usado en bebs desde que ellos tienen sus primeros dientes. Solamente una cantidad pequea de esmalte de fluoruro es usada. Cuanto tiempo dura el fluoruro? La capa de fluoruro trabajara mejor si es aplicada en los dientes de 3-4 vecez al ao. For children with Medicaid and Childrens Mercy or UNICARE card holders see pages 21-22 of this guide for ride options. Dental Services for Children Age 0-5 Who Do Not Have Medicaid Once your child is enrolled and attending the program, staff will assist you in arranging a dental exam and follow-up treatment. Your Family Service Worker/Family Educator can help you locate a dental provider, make an appointment, and provide the forms needed. If cavities or other problems are found, contact your Family Service Worker/Family Educator for help to arrange dental follow-up at no cost to the parent.

PEDIATRIC DENTISTS WHO ACCEPT MEDICAID/HEALTHWAVE (CHILDRENS MERCY, UNICARE)

Dental benefits are administered by the Kansas Medical Assistance Program (KMAP). To verify coverage of services at dentist offices that are not listed below, or at an office where you are currently a patient, or if you have any questions about what services KMAP will/will not cover, you must call the KMAP Customer Service Center at 1-800-766-9012. The following listing includes the most current information as to the types of coverage each provider accepts. Things to remember: You MUST have your current Medicaid/Childrens Mercy/Unicare Card with you for each visit! Take your I.D. and copies of any other insurance you may have. All dentists require a 24-hour cancellation notice if you are unable to keep the appointment. Be prompt. Take a current list of all medications that your child takes, as well as a list of any allergies or medical problems they may have.

Pediatric Vision Loss For parents with visually impaired children, it can be challenging to find the right services and programs. Consider the information below outlining important information regarding pediatric vision loss. Excellent guidance is available to parents through Families Together, Inc. which provides an information center serving Kansas families with children who have disabilities. The Kansas Association for Parents of Visually Impaired Children (KAPVI) is an organization designed to assist families of children with visual impairments. KAPVI is the Kansas state chapter of NAPVI, the National Association of Parents with Children with Visual Impairments. Additional support can be found through Envision, a Wichita-based non-profit organization whose goal is to provide independence for people who are blind or low vision. If you feel your child has a visual impairment, see a doctor. During the ages of birth through seven years, time is critical 2. Ask other parents, visually impaired teachers and friends who you should see to evaluate your child. 3. Look for a doctor that gives you face to face time, appears, interested, communicates to your satisfaction and has you feeling resolved with the evaluation, communication, care and long term plan. If they dont, change doctors immediately. They are not a higher being. 4. Align yourself with your childrens teachers other parents with visually impaired children and all individuals that teach your child that all things are possible. 5. Remember that the first years of life are critical for good vision and an all-out effort for intervention is extremely important to your childs rest of their life. 6. Just as you would expect in the emergency room, collectively, a team is likely to provide better care than a single person even a doctor.

VISION SERVICE PLAN (VSP) SIGHT FOR STUDENTS is a national program that provides eye care and eyewear for children who have no vision insurance or Medicaid coverage, and whose family meets specific income guidelines. VSP also sponsors a program which provides eye care and eyewear for adults in the same family as a qualifying child in SIGHT FOR STUDENTS. Contact your Family Services Worker or Family Educator for information. MEDICAID Families with Medicaid coverage can contact any doctor on the list provided that takes Medicaid and make an appointment for an eye examination. The physicians office can tell you what Medicaid does and does not cover (services, eyewear, etc.) SEE TO LEARN This program provides one free screening eye exam for children who are 6 months 3 years of age. Parents can call a nearby participating optometrist to arrange an appointment.
