HELP STOCK THE GREEN MOUNTAIN CHRISTMAS GIFT ROOM AT THE CHRISTIAN CENTER
Green Mountain Christian Center announces the Sixth Annual Green Mountain Christmas on Dec. 20 and 21, at Green Mountain Christian Center (GMCC), 440 Main St. Bennington,Vermont. The plans include the Gift Room for Parents in Need, gift wrapping, and crafts for the children, Christmas music, cookies and refreshments, and other Christmastide activities The Gift Room for parents in need is at the center of the activities. Green Mountain Christian Center will do its best again this year to fill the toy gap, but we will obviously need help. You can donate toys or cash to help stock the GIFT ROOM where parents in need can select presents for their children ages 10 and under. Thanks to the generosity of many businesses and individuals in this community, Christmas 2012 was a huge success providing local parents with gifts for their children. We were able to help over 250 parents with toys for approximately 500 children from throughout the Southwestern Vermont region, Bennington, Pownal, Woodford, Shaftsbury,Arlington, Hoosick Falls,White Creek and others. Given the continued economic difficulties we expect the need has increased, so we are planning to assist 200-300 parents (500-600 local children). Donations can be mailed or delivered to Green Mountain Christian Center, 440 Main St. Bennington,VT (office in rear). The office is open Tuesday,Wednesday & Friday 9 am to 3:30 pm and on Monday & Thursday 9am to 12 noon. Parents in need should call the Green Mountain Christian Center office at 802447-7224 for a reservation before December 21, 2013.

YOUTHBUILD PROGRAM BENEFITS FROM FUNDS RAISED BY HUDSON RIVER COMMUNITY CREDIT UNION As part of its ongoing Community Heroes Campaign, Hudson River Community Credit Union (HRCCU) recently presented a check in the amount of $250 to Youthbuild, a program sponsored by the Troy Commission on Economic Opportunity. Each month, HRCCU chooses a local not-for-profit community organization and donates five dollars for each new member that joins or existing member that upgrades a service. To date, HRCCU has donated thousands of dollars to local organizations. In YouthBuild programs, low-income young people ages 16 to 24 work full-time for 6 to 24 months toward their GEDs or high school diplomas while learning job skills by building affordable housing in their communities. Emphasis is placed on leadership development, community service, and the creation of a positive mini-community of adults and youth committed to each others success. Students may earn AmeriCorps education awards through their homebuilding and other community service. At exit, they are placed in college, jobs, or both. Hudson River Community Credit Unions mission is to improve the well-being of members and their families by providing quality financial services with the best overall value. Hudson River Community Credit Union has five branches located in Corinth, Glens Falls, Hudson Falls, Troy and Cohoes. The Credit Union is a not-for-profit financial cooperative owned and governed by its members. Anyone who lives, works, worships, attends school or businesses and other legal entities located in Warren, Washington, Saratoga and Rensselaer Counties or the Towns of Cohoes, Watervliet and Green Island and their family members are eligible to join the credit union. They have awesome hickory products which include two different hickory syrups, hickory salts, hickory elixir, tea, gift baskets, etc. There is no other company in New York that produces these types of products and only a handful in the US. They are a small family owned business and they get all products locally. A truly wonderful company to do business with and I highly recommend trying the syrup. They say its a new flavor and I have to agree with them! States Kristina

ON THE FARM
by Andy Manne
An article, "Sisters Return to Farm to Learn About Production," was published in California Farm Bureau's Ag Alert. But that headline is an understatement that belies the real intent of these sistersto one day take over the farm and continue the family legacy. It's the kind of story I hope becomes more common as planning for succession grows to be the norm rather than the exception. After graduating from college, both sisters went to work in agrelated occupations. They said it was this work experience outside the family farm that got them thinking about returning to continue the legacy. This oft-overlooked link is an important component of a comprehensive succession plan. It is best for children raised on the farm to gain experience off the farm working outside the family business. The article also notes: "For her [Becky's] senior project at Cal Poly, she prepared a succession plan for her family, which involved meetings with her grandparents, father and uncle to talk about the future of the operation." If you're struggling with who should start the conversation, follow these sisters' lead: If you're interested in continuing the operation, it's your responsibility to initiate the succession planning process. In discussing the continuing transition, one of the sisters is confident. "I know right now this is where I'm supposed to be," she says. "Without a doubt." If you have children, some things to be mindful of: Don't assume your children aren't interested. Ask them all if they might want a career in farming. Don't overlook or underestimate your daughter's interests or capabilities. Farming is a career founded in desire. Don't dismiss or otherwise ignore your kids' inquires about what might happen to the farm and when. Don't procrastinate. Planning is important. The farm will transition, but the question remains, how? All common sense advice, right? Well, you know what Will Rogers said about common sense: It aint so common.

THE CHRISTMAS ORNAMENT- The Highlight Acting Troupe is proud to present The Christmas Ornament written by Ron LeVan and adapted by Kathryn Capalbo. The show is directed by Kathryn Capalbo with Andrew Osterhout and Steve Salhoff assisting and accompanist Marietta Mitchell. The time is the 1990's, the place is New York City. Everywhere you look is the feeling of Christmas. We bring you the story of Donald and Beverly, two bums, living on the streets who decide to get married. You will meet their fellow friends who will try to help them do just that. Also, there is a story of an orphanage and how the director of the orphanage is trying to help each child feel that they are loved, especially their newest orphan who needs some extra special care. All along the way the story is filled with songs. This show is in special memory of the late Ron LeVan. He loved creating each show but the Christmas Shows held a special place in his heart. Come join us at the Brunswick Grange, Rt.7 and Rt. 142 (behind Stewart's) on Friday, Dec. 6 and Saturday Dec. 7 at 7:30 pm and Sunday, Dec. 8 at 2 pm. Ticket prices are $10 for adults and $5 for seniors and students. We will be collecting food for the Pittstown Food Pantry at each performance. Anyone donating will receive a raffle ticket for a Christmas wreath. For reservations or information please call Tina or Kat at 272-7558.

I can be a little shy at first, but very friendly once I get to know you. I can also be a bit independent as well. I especially love to play with my toys! I do use my litter box appropriately and would be fine as an indoor kitty. I have been fine with other cats here but Im not too sure about dogs. If I sound like the guy for you, please come visit me and give me my forever home! Catrina came to Second Chance Animal Center with her friend Whiskers because their guardians were no longer able to care for them. They are very friendly, affectionate, and playful. They would prefer an indoor/outdoor home, and are fine with younger children, other cats, and possibly dogs. If you think Catrina could be the girl for you please stop by and spend some time with her. Chloe came to Second Chance Animal Center because her previous guardian was no longer able to care for her. Chloe is good with other cats, dogs, and younger children but must be stay inside because she is declawed. Chloe is mellow, independent is would be the perfect lap cat. If you think Chloe could be the girl for you please stop by and visit her.
