Marc Bryan Professor Fran Voltz ENG 1102 22 September 2013 Proposing Option Three Over the past several weeks, the media has been hell-bent on providing us with as much information as possible pertaining to Syria and its housing of chemical weapons. It would seem, at first glance, that only two options for action on this issue are possible. According to our government, we have the authority to subjugate the chemical weapons as we please using the full force of the U.S. military. On the other hand, others are calling for Syria to dispose of the chemical weapons in a timely manner. In either case, useful chemical weapons are being taken out of the hands of the leader of a unitary republic. With all the debate slicing through the country, most people have more than likely lost sight of option three. Option three solves all of the problems associated with the existence of chemical weapons and removes any remaining threat of chemical warfare from Syria. In addition, war in Syria would likely finish as there would no longer be citizens of this country. Forcing Syria to use chemical weapons on itself would not only deter any future problems of chemical warfare from them, but it would also remove the weapons from existence. The fact is that the U.S. does not have the economic base to easily rid the world of this problem. With that in mind, the only option is to force Syria to destroy itself via chemical warfare and let the bordering countries take care of the clean up. Just imagine an American soldier forced to enter a country with chemical

weapons to remove them. The American soldier experiences the wrath of a chemical weapon when his convoy is ambushed and hundreds of soldiers are left in agony to suffer horrible, painful deaths. Why would we as a country use our precious resources to accomplish this task when we could easily blackmail Syria into chemical destruction? Taking action in Syria should be simple and should get the necessary job done. If the U.S. and allies are continually contemplating what should be done, then we are in the wake of these weapons being used on us. We need to take heed of option three for the safety of the rest of the world. Option three solves every problem we have in taking these weapons out of use and still allows the safety of our country. Bashar al-Assad has used chemical weapons on his own country, and expert scientists say that he has 1000 tons of several chemicals used in warfare. Knowing that al-Assad already has the ability to destroy his home country leaves only one option for removing these weapons. In the end, with option three we can rest assured that the weapons will not be used by al-Assad or any other Syrian power. Hundreds of thousands of people have already died or fled the country as refugees because of the civil war in Syria. Option three eliminates the civil war and any problems we may have with Syria. Not to mention, conflict seems to be spreading throughout the region because of people leaving Syria. In option three, we contain the problem as well as eliminate it, providing the U.S. with the safety and security necessary. To reiterate, option three involves using Syrias chemical weapons against itself thereby removing the weapons, the civil war and any resulting problem we might face while saving the lives of innocent Americans.
