Language Common Core Standards: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.3.5 Demonstrate understanding of figurative language, word relationships and nuances in word meanings. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.3.5a Distinguish the literal and nonliteral meanings of words and phrases in context

Music/ Movement National Standards: 6. Listening to, analyzing, and describing music. 8. Understanding relationships between music, the other arts, and disciplines outside the arts. Procedure: 1. The students will be in a computer lab, or working with iPads if provided by the school. 2. The computers will be an exciting technological addition and will likely grab their attention so no additional task is needed. 3. Ill begin by reviewing what was learned yesterday by calling on students a. Definition of simile b. Example of simile

c. Definition of metaphor d. Example of metaphor 4. Simile looks like smile and we smile at things we like so we know that a simile uses the words: like or as 5. Metaphors are used to compare two things, but dont use like or as. 6. I will play the YouTube video they watched the day before and ask them to pay attention since they will need to know these examples when they start working with the computers. 7. I will explain that they are going to create a list on their paper. They need to find 10 songs that have lyrics that include metaphors and 10 songs that have lyrics include similes. They must also find 3 songs that use the words like or as that are not used as a simile. 8. I will remind them that they need to stay in their seats and there should be no talking since this is an independent assignment. 9. While they are working, I will turn on classical background music to help them focus. 10. Once they have created their lists, they will go back to the classroom (if in computer lab) and will sit in their small table groups of 4. 11. They will each share their favorite song and will decide upon which song is the favorite for the group. We will use these songs as our movement minute. 12. The group that picked the song gets to stand in the front of the room and dance. The other students can either choose to mimic them or create their own dance.

13. When the song is over, everyone will write 4 sentences about something they noticed while the song was playing.
