Dear Eastminster Family, Have you ever built a house? People that have undertaken that endeavor often describe it as an enormous challenge. Finding the lot, developing just the right architectural plans, putting in a good foundation, framing the walls, and so much more. A thousand decisions lead to a thousand parts, each of which needs to be installed in just the right way for everything to come together to be a home. Baptism is about building lives. Those who think of baptism as a few words and a few drops of water shared over five minutes on a Sunday morning are missing the point. In baptism, God gives you and me the privilege of joining in the most sacred construction project there is: a human life. Thankfully, through Scripture and in Jesus Christ, God provides the architectural plans for everything from a strong foundation to the finishing touches. God delivers the materials needed for construction directly to us. In grateful response for His provision, we seek to carefully shape and mold the lives entrusted to us. Thankfully, even during the construction process our Lord counsels us, guides us, and is with us. Baptism is a life-long process and while it is important to intentionally nurture the children entrusted to us every day, I want to take a minute to say a word about Confirmation, the vital period where students move from the shadow of their parents faith to step forward to claim Christs forgiving love for themselves. Eastminster is approaching Confirmation in a new way that I think is quite good. At the beginning of this past school year, all our ninth graders were invited to participate in a year long process that combined moderate involvement with our Senior High Youth ministry with several special times of teaching and learning. Specifically, in addition to being present for at least half the weekly Sunday School classes and half the weekly Sunday night Youth Fellowship, the students are also asked to participate in three weekend retreats and two service activities. These expectations are modest compared to what is asked of a student involved in band or a sport, but my prayer is that the combination of fairly regular participation in the Senior High ministry along with the intentional weekends away will add up to a meaningful explanation of and equipping for, what it is to follow Jesus Christ as Lord. I especially want to thank the adult volunteers who are giving three weekends serving as leaders of the family groups that offer the students a small group environment for discussion, support and encouragement. As a church family we are blessed by God to participate in His work of building lives by fulfilling our baptismal vows. But we need to do our part. Whether building a foundation for tiny tots or growing teens, or whether detail work or renovation in our own lives, let us serve the One who is the ultimate Architect and Carpenter. See you Sunday,

Eastminster will sponsor a Habitat build in New Orleans in coordination with St. Charles Avenue Presbyterian Church. If youve never been on one of these trips, you might consider this a pilgrimage as well as a Christian outreach project. We stay in a nice hotel, enjoy good Creole cuisine, and assist a needy family in building the first home they will ever own. Our Fellowship Hall - In 1969 Eastminsters Long Range Planning Committee recommended adding a fellowship hall that would provide space for a basketball court, meal accommodations for 400, a kitchen and additional classrooms. Five years later, after discussions of revisions and alternatives, the fellowship hall was approved. The construction contract for approximately $475,000 was awarded, with money from the sale of the manse on Wyndham Road to be applied. Ground breaking occurred in the spring of 1974, and the building was completed in early 1975. In December 1976 it was announced that the building would be renamed Thompson Hall, and it continues to be the site of many activities, including the Sunday Jubilee service.

Youth vs. Parents Flag Football Game A free church-wide fellowship event for the whole family on Sunday, February 3, 2013. All youth and parents are invited! The place to be is Crayton Middle School as the adults and youth compete in a game of flag football. Come cheer on your team! Keep watching for details. The Parents of Teens class welcomes Jack Claypoole as the January 27 Sunday School class speaker, to discuss how parents can help prepare their youth to think before they act, especially as these decisions relate to risky behaviors such as alcohol and drug use. The presentation is open to all (nonmembers welcome) and will begin at 10:10 a.m. in the CLC game room area. Jack, a Midlands native, was formerly in Washington, D.C., Jack W. Claypoole with the Drug Free Communities program at the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy, first as administrator and then as associate deputy director (2006-12). Previously, he was CEO of the Lexington/Richland Alcohol and Drug Abuse Council. A USC graduate, he returned to Columbia in July to become executive director of the Carolina Alumni Association.

Savvy Seniors Say Toss Excess in New Year

Want to simplify your life and get rid of clutter in the New Year? Savvy Seniors will get advice from an expert at their luncheon meeting on Tuesday, January 22, at noon in Thompson Hall. Renee Wright, owner of Estate Sale Service, will offer tips on how to turn unneeded possessions into a tidy profit. She will be accompanied by Hannah Stiles, an Eastminster member and a member of her staff. John Hart will be the new 2013 leader for Savvy Seniors, replacing Sara Davis.
