Teacher Candidate: Sydney Teal Subject/Grade: Science/Kindergarten Learning Objective:

Lesson # _1_____ Date and Time of Lesson:

The Students will successfully acknowledge that there are differences among a particular type of plant by observing and demonstrating the different types.

Alignment with Standards: SC State Science Standard: K: 2.4 Compare individual examples of a particular type of plant or animal to determine that there are differences among individuals. SC State Science Standard: K 1.1 Identify observed objects or events by using the senses. CC Standard: Fine Arts: VAK-1.1 Use his or her own ideas in the creation of works of visual art. CC Standard: ELA: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.K.2 Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to compose informative/explanatory texts in which they name what they are writing about and supply some information about the topic.

Developmental Appropriateness or Cross-curricular connections: The Cross-curricular connections are Fine Arts and ELA. For the students assessment, they will be drawing three different types of pumpkins. All three will have to have different characteristics. Under each drawing they will have to write one word that describes that different quality. (Green, bumpy, mixture of color, etc.) Assessment(s) of the Objectives:
Lesson Objective(s) Assessment(s) of the Objective(s) 1.Pre-assessment: I will ask my students to describe to me what a pumpkin looks like. I will then describe the different types of pumpkin in my lesson. 2.During Assessment: The student will successfully recall differences among a particular type of plant by observing different types of pumpkins and they will be recorded on a chart. 3. Post Assessment: The students will create his or her pumpkins demonstrating that there are differences among pumpkins, and write the difference that they drew. (If they drew a green pumpkin, they would need to write green under their pumpkin.) Use of Formative Assessment 1. I can use this assessment data to discuss that we are all people, but we are all different. I could use the children themselves as examples to show how we are all different, and then we could list the different traits. This would also be a SSCE standard.

Objective 1: The student will successfully recall differences among a particular type of plant by observing different types of pumpkins.

Objective 2 The student will demonstrate his or her own creativeness by drawing different types of pumpkins.

Accommodations:
For early finishers, I can have them create their own personal pumpkin. They would need to make it the way they see themselves. Then, we could later compare the differences in the class pumpkins. This is where I would tie in the SSCE standard and discuss how everyone is different. For slow paced learners I will have them do as much as they could, then finish it the next day during center time. I will try to incorporate all learning styles. Each child will be able to see the text, see the words written that describe the differences, they will be able to see/feel the differences, and they are going to be creating the differences themselves. There is one little girl who has a physical disability. I will have different types of pumpkins at each table. This allows her to stay in her seat, and draw from where she is.

Materials: The Pumpkin Book By: Gail Gibbons Big post-it note paper Pumpkins (all types) Crayons/Pencil Paper Smart board Video Procedures: 1. What new season did we just start? 2. What are some types of plants that we see during the fall? (Pumpkins) 3. Raise your hand if anyone has seen a pumpkin? Can someone describe to me what a pumpkin looks like? 4. What do we know about pumpkins? 5. Read The Pumpkin Book 6. Ask: what are some things that we noticed about the pumpkins in this book? 7. We will discuss the different characteristics that we noticed about the pumpkins in our story. 8. I will show pictures on the smart board showing different types of pumpkins. 9. I will pass around different types of pumpkins. (Orange pumpkin, green pumpkin, yellow pumpkin, striped pumpkin, tall pumpkin, short pumpkin) 10. After passing around our pumpkins I will chart the differences that we seen as we passed the pumpkins around. 11. I will call on ones who raise their hand to tell me the different characteristics that they noticed. 12. After we list the differences as a whole group, I will dismiss them to their assigned seats. 13. Once in their seat I will pass out the assessment paper. 14. At their seat they have their cup filled with crayons and pencils. 15. The will complete their assessment of drawing 3 different types of pumpkins that they saw that day.

Activity Analysis: Reading The Pumpkin Book, and asking higher order thinking questions. Passing around real pumpkin so that each child can see, feel, and smell the pumpkins. We will make a chart with all of the different traits that pumpkins may have. They will draw three different types of pumpkins to demonstrate their knowledge of differences in a particular type of plant.

Each activity that was done supported the lesson objectives. They all demonstrated that pumpkins come in different shapes, sizes, colors, and textures. Each lesson provided a different form of learning, so each child would receive its type of style of learning. I used the smart board and a video to incorporate technology. I will show a video to introduce the real life differences of pumpkins.
