Student Intern: Karen Bolick 5th Grade Block 2 11:45 1:30 Subject / Content Area: Math Geometry

Date(s) to be taught: 11/4 through 11/8

Common Core/Essential Standards: 5.G Classify two-dimensional figures into categories based on their properties. 5.G.3. Understand that attributes belonging to a category of two dimensional figures also belong to all subcategories of that category. For example, all rectangles have four right angles and squares are rectangles, so all squares have four right angles. 5.G.4. Classify two-dimensional figures in a hierarchy based on properties. Unit Objective: Review basic plan figures and explore the relationship between congruent angles. Assessment strategy: Day 1 Students will complete an exit ticket to show understanding of basic plane figures. The sorting activity will be assessed formally with students showing mastery by attaining at least 85% accuracy. Students will complete a worksheet on irregular polygons General Description of Procedures: Monday 11:45 12:45 Science Quiz 12:45 1:30 Math Intro Shapes & Properties Math Notebook Polygons Make a new section in Math Notebook Sticky Note labeled Geometry Review Power Point - Definitions written in notebooks (modeled on white board 3 columns Term/Looks Like/Details): Point; Line; Line Segment; Angle, Acute Angle, Obtuse Angle; Vertices; Plane Figure; Polygon; Triangle Equilateral, Isosceles, Scalene, Right; Quadrilateral Regular same length sides / same degree angle, Irregular different length sides / different degree angle, Trapezoid, Parallelogram, Rhombus, Rectangle, Square Exit Ticket Sorting Activity (see PDF files) Materials Shape sets, Venn Diagrams, Prompts I will use the document projector to show a Venn diagram and give the parameters such as Quadrilateral and One Obtuse Angle. The students will work in their table groups to select all the shapes that fit either condition and place them in the Venn diagram.
