The Science of Getting Rich by Wallace Delois Wattles Published In 1910 Preface THIS book is pragmatical, not philosophical

a practical manual, not a treatise upon theories! It is intended "or the men and #omen #hose most pressing need is "or money #ho #ish to get rich "irst, and philosophi$e a"ter#ard! It is "or those #ho ha%e, so "ar, "ound neither the time, the means, nor the opportunity to go deeply into the study o" metaphysics, but #ho #ant results and #ho are #illing to take the conclusions o" science as a basis "or action, #ithout going into all the processes by #hich those conclusions #ere reached! It is e&pected that the reader #ill take the "undamental statements upon "aith, 'ust as he #ould take statements concerning a la# o" electrical action i" they #ere promulgated by a (arconi or an )dison and, taking the statements upon "aith, that he #ill pro%e their truth by acting upon them #ithout "ear or hesitation! )%ery man or #oman #ho does this #ill certainly get rich "or the science herein applied is an e&act science, and "ailure is impossible! *or the bene"it, ho#e%er, o" those #ho #ish to in%estigate philosophical theories and so secure a logical basis "or "aith, I #ill here cite certain authorities! The monistic theory o" the uni%erse the theory that +ne is ,ll, and that ,ll is +ne That one Substance mani"ests itsel" as the seeming many elements o" the material #orld -is o" Hindu origin, and has been gradually #inning its #ay into the thought o" the #estern #orld "or t#o hundred years! It is the "oundation o" all the +riental philosophies, and o" those o" Descartes, Spino$a, .eibnit$, Schopenhauer, Hegel, and )merson! The reader #ho #ould dig to the philosophical "oundations o" this is ad%ised to read Hegel and )merson "or himsel"! In #riting this book I ha%e sacri"iced all other considerations to plainness and simplicity o" style, so that all might understand! The plan o" action laid do#n herein #as deduced "rom the conclusions o" philosophy it has been thoroughly tested, and bears the supreme test o" practical e&periment it #orks! I" you #ish to kno# ho# the conclusions #ere arri%ed at, read the #ritings o" the authors mentioned abo%e and i" you #ish to reap the "ruits o" their philosophies in actual practice, read this book and do e&actly as it tells you to do! The ,uthor /H,PT)0 1 The Right To Be Rich WH,T)1)0 may be said in praise o" po%erty, the "act remains that it is not possible to li%e a really complete or success"ul li"e unless one is rich! 2o man can rise to his greatest possible height in talent or soul de%elopment unless he has plenty o" money "or to un"old the soul and to de%elop talent he must ha%e many things to use, and he cannot ha%e these things unless he has money to buy them #ith! , man de%elops in mind, soul, and body by making

use o" things, and society is so organi$ed that man must ha%e money in order to become the possessor o" things there"ore, the basis o" all ad%ancement "or man must be the science o" getting rich! The ob'ect o" all li"e is de%elopment and e%erything that li%es has an inalienable right to all the de%elopment it is capable o" attaining! (an3s right to li"e means his right to ha%e the "ree and unrestricted use o" all the things #hich may be necessary to his "ullest mental, spiritual, and physical un"oldment or, in other #ords, his right to be rich! In this book, I shall not speak o" riches in a "igurati%e #ay to be really rich does not mean to be satis"ied or contented #ith a little! 2o man ought to be satis"ied #ith a little i" he is capable o" using and en'oying more! The purpose o" 2ature is the ad%ancement and un"oldment o" li"e and e%ery man should ha%e all that can contribute to the po#er elegance, beauty, and richness o" li"e to be content #ith less is sin"ul! The man #ho o#ns all he #ants "or the li%ing o" all the li"e he is capable o" li%ing is rich and no man #ho has not plenty o" money can ha%e all he #ants! .i"e has ad%anced so "ar, and become so comple&, that e%en the most ordinary man or #oman re4uires a great amount o" #ealth in order to li%e in a manner that e%en approaches completeness! )%ery person naturally #ants to become all that they are capable o" becoming this desire to reali$e innate possibilities is inherent in human nature #e cannot help #anting to be all that #e can be! Success in li"e is becoming #hat you #ant to be you can become #hat you #ant to be only by making use o" things, and you can ha%e the "ree use o" things only as you become rich enough to buy them! To understand the science o" getting rich is there"ore the most essential o" all kno#ledge! There is nothing #rong in #anting to get rich! The desire "or riches is really the desire "or a richer, "uller, and more abundant li"e and that desire is praise #orthy! The man #ho does not desire to li%e more abundantly is abnormal, and so the man #ho does not desire to ha%e money enough to buy all he #ants is abnormal! There are three moti%es "or #hich #e li%e #e li%e "or the body, #e li%e "or the mind, #e li%e "or the soul! 2o one o" these is better or holier than the other all are alike desirable, and no one o" the three - body, mind, or soul - can li%e "ully i" either o" the others is cut short o" "ull li"e and e&pression! It is not right or noble to li%e only "or the soul and deny mind or body and it is #rong to li%e "or the intellect and deny body or soul! We are all ac4uainted #ith the loathsome conse4uences o" li%ing "or the body and denying both mind and soul and #e see that real li"e means the complete e&pression o" all that man can gi%e "orth through body, mind, and soul! Whate%er he can say, no man can be really happy or satis"ied unless his body is li%ing "ully in e%ery "unction, and unless the same is true o" his mind and his soul! Where%er there is une&pressed possibility, or "unction not

per"ormed, there is unsatis"ied desire! Desire is possibility seeking e&pression, or "unction seeking per"ormance! (an cannot li%e "ully in body #ithout good "ood, com"ortable clothing, and #arm shelter and #ithout "reedom "rom e&cessi%e toil! 0est and recreation are also necessary to his physical li"e ! He cannot li%e "ully in mind #ithout books and time to study them, #ithout opportunity "or tra%el and obser%ation, or #ithout intellectual companionship! To li%e "ully in mind he must ha%e intellectual recreations, and must surround himsel" #ith all the ob'ects o" art and beauty he is capable o" using and appreciating! To li%e "ully in soul, man must ha%e lo%e and lo%e is denied e&pression by po%erty! , man3s highest happiness is "ound in the besto#al o" bene"its on those he lo%es lo%e "inds its most natural and spontaneous e&pression in gi%ing! The man #ho has nothing to gi%e cannot "ill his place as a husband or "ather, as a citi$en, or as a man! It is in the use o" material things that a man "inds "ull li"e "or his body, de%elops his mind, and un"olds his soul! It is there"ore o" supreme importance to him that he should be rich! It is per"ectly right that you should desire to be rich i" you are a normal man or #oman you cannot help doing so! It is per"ectly right that you should gi%e your best attention to the Science o" 5etting 0ich, "or it is the noblest and most necessary o" all studies! I" you neglect this study, you are derelict in your duty to yoursel", to 5od and humanity "or you can render to 5od and humanity no greater ser%ice than to make the most o" yoursel"! /H,PT)0 6 There is A Science of Getting Rich TH)0) is a Science o" getting rich, and it is an e&act science, like algebra or arithmetic! There are certain la#s #hich go%ern the process o" ac4uiring riches once these la#s are learned and obeyed by any man, he #ill get rich #ith mathematical certainty! The o#nership o" money and property comes as a result o" doing things in a certain #ay those #ho do things in this /ertain Way, #hether on purpose or accidentally, get rich #hile those #ho do not do things in this /ertain Way, no matter ho# hard they #ork or ho# able they are, remain poor! It is a natural la# that like causes al#ays produce like e""ects and, there"ore, any man or #oman #ho learns to do things in this certain #ay #ill in"allibly get rich! That the abo%e statement is true is sho#n by the "ollo#ing "acts7 5etting rich is not a matter o" en%ironment, "or, i" it #ere, all the people in certain neighborhoods #ould become #ealthy the people o" one city #ould all be rich, #hile those o" other to#ns #ould all be poor or the inhabitants o" one state #ould roll in #ealth, #hile those o" an ad'oining state #ould be in po%erty! 8ut e%ery#here #e see rich and poor li%ing side by side, in the same en%ironment, and o"ten engaged in the same %ocations! When t#o men are in the same locality, and in the same business, and one gets rich #hile the other remains poor, it sho#s that getting rich is

not, primarily, a matter o" en%ironment! Some en%ironments may be more "a%orable than others, but #hen t#o men in the same business are in the same neighborhood, and one gets rich #hile the other "ails, it indicates that getting rich is the result o" doing things in a /ertain Way! ,nd "urther, the ability to do things in this certain #ay is not due solely to the possession o" talent, "or many people #ho ha%e great talent remain poor, #hile other #ho ha%e %ery little talent get rich! Studying the people #ho ha%e got rich, #e "ind that they are an a%erage lot in all respects, ha%ing no greater talents and abilities than other men! It is e%ident that they do not get rich because they possess talents and abilities that other men ha%e not, but because they happen to do things in a /ertain Way! 5etting rich is not the result o" sa%ing, or 9thri"t9 many %ery penurious people are poor, #hile "ree spenders o"ten get rich! 2or is getting rich due to doing things #hich others "ail to do "or t#o men in the same business o"ten do almost e&actly the same things, and one gets rich #hile the other remains poor or becomes bankrupt! *rom all these things, #e must come to the conclusion that getting rich is the result o" doing things in a /ertain Way! I" getting rich is the result o" doing things in a /ertain Way, and i" like causes al#ays produce like e""ects, then any man or #oman #ho can do things in that #ay can become rich, and the #hole matter is brought #ithin the domain o" e&act science! The 4uestion arises here, #hether this /ertain Way may not be so di""icult that only a "e# may "ollo# it!This cannot be true, as #e ha%e seen, so "ar as natural ability is concerned! Talented people get rich, and blockheads get rich intellectually brilliant people get rich, and %ery stupid people get rich physically strong people get rich, and #eak and sickly people get rich! Some degree o" ability to think and understand is, o" course, essential but in so "ar natural ability is concerned, any man or #oman #ho has sense enough to read and understand these #ords can certainly get rich! ,lso, #e ha%e seen that it is not a matter o" en%ironment! .ocation counts "or something one #ould not go to the heart o" the Sahara and e&pect to do success"ul business! 5etting rich in%ol%es the necessity o" dealing #ith men, and o" being #here there are people to deal #ith and i" these people are inclined to deal in the #ay you #ant to deal, so much the better! 8ut that is about as "ar as en%ironment goes! I" anybody else in your to#n can get rich, so can you and i" anybody else in your state can get rich, so can you! ,gain, it is not a matter o" choosing some particular business or pro"ession! People get rich in e%ery business, and in e%ery pro"ession #hile their ne&t door neighbors in the same %ocation remain in po%erty! It is true that you #ill do best in a business #hich you like, and #hich is congenial to you and i" you ha%e certain talents #hich are #ell de%eloped, you #ill do best in a business #hich calls "or the e&ercise o" those

talents! ,lso, you #ill do best in a business #hich is suited to your locality an ice-cream parlor #ould do better in a #arm climate than in 5reenland, and a salmon "ishery #ill succeed better in the 2orth#est than in *lorida, #here there are no salmon! 8ut, aside "rom these general limitations, getting rich is not dependent upon your engaging in some particular business, but upon your learning to do things in a /ertain Way! I" you are no# in business, and anybody else in your locality is getting rich in the same business, #hile you are not getting rich, it is because you are not doing things in the same Way that the other person is doing them! 2o one is pre%ented "rom getting rich by lack o" capital! True, as you get capital the increase becomes more easy and rapid but one #ho has capital is already rich, and does not need to consider ho# to become so! 2o matter ho# poor you may be, i" you begin to do things in the /ertain Way you #ill begin to get rich and you #ill begin to ha%e capital! The getting o" capital is a part o" the process o" getting rich and it is a part o" the result #hich in%ariably "ollo#s the doing o" things in the /ertain Way! :ou may be the poorest man on the continent, and be deeply in debt you may ha%e neither "riends, in"luence, nor resources but i" you begin to do things in this #ay, you must in"allibly begin to get rich, "or like causes must produce like e""ects! I" you ha%e no capital, you can get capital i" you are in the #rong business, you can get into the right business i" you are in the #rong location, you can go to the right location and you can do so by beginning in your present business and in your present location to do things in the /ertain Way #hich causes success! /H,PT)0 ; Is Opportunity Monopolized? 2+ man is kept poor because opportunity has been taken a#ay "rom him because other people ha%e monopoli$ed the #ealth, and ha%e put a "ence around it! :ou may be shut o"" "rom engaging in business in certain lines, but there are other channels open to you! Probably it #ould be hard "or you to get control o" any o" the great railroad systems that "ield is pretty #ell monopoli$ed! 8ut the electric rail#ay business is still in its in"ancy, and o""ers plenty o" scope "or enterprise and it #ill be but a %ery "e# years until tra""ic and transportation through the air #ill become a great industry, and in all its branches #ill gi%e employment to hundreds o" thousands, and perhaps to millions, o" people! Why not turn your attention to the de%elopment o" aerial transportation, instead o" competing #ith <!<! Hill and others "or a chance in the steam rail#ay #orld= It is 4uite true that i" you are a #orkman in the employ o" the steel trust you ha%e %ery little chance o" becoming the o#ner o" the plant in #hich you #ork but it is also true that i" you #ill commence to act in a /ertain Way, you can soon lea%e the employ o" the steel trust you can buy a "arm o" "rom ten to "orty acres, and engage in business as a

producer o" "oodstu""s! There is great opportunity at this time "or men #ho #ill li%e upon small tracts o" land and culti%ate the same intensi%ely such men #ill certainly get rich! :ou may say that it is impossible "or you to get the land, but I am going to pro%e to you that it is not impossible, and that you can certainly get a "arm i" you #ill go to #ork in a /ertain Way! ,t di""erent periods the tide o" opportunity sets in di""erent directions, according to the needs o" the #hole, and the particular stage o" social e%olution #hich has been reached! ,t present, in ,merica, it is setting to#ard agriculture and the allied industries and pro"essions! To-day, opportunity is open be"ore the "actory #orker in his line! It is open be"ore the business man #ho supplies the "armer more than be"ore the one #ho supplies the "actory #orker and be"ore the pro"essional man #ho #aits upon the "armer more than be"ore the one #ho ser%es the #orking class! There is abundance o" opportunity "or the man #ho #ill go #ith the tide, instead o" trying to s#im against it! So the "actory #orkers, either as indi%iduals or as a class, are not depri%ed o" opportunity! The #orkers are not being 9kept do#n9 by their masters they are not being 9ground9 by the trusts and combinations o" capital! ,s a class, they are #here they are because they do not do things in a /ertain Way! I" the #orkers o" ,merica chose to do so, they could "ollo# the e&ample o" their brothers in 8elgium and other countries, and establish great department stores and co-operati%e industries they could elect men o" their o#n class to o""ice, and pass la#s "a%oring the de%elopment o" such co-operati%e industries and in a "e# years they could take peaceable possession o" the industrial "ield! The #orking class may become the master class #hene%er they #ill begin to do things in a /ertain Way the la# o" #ealth is the same "or them as it is "or all others! This they must learn and they #ill remain #here they are as long as they continue to do as they do! The indi%idual #orker, ho#e%er, is not held do#n by the ignorance or the mental sloth"ulness o" his class he can "ollo# the tide o" opportunity to riches, and this book #ill tell him ho#! 2o one is kept in po%erty by a shortness in the supply o" riches there is more than enough "or all! , palace as large as the capitol at Washington might be built "or e%ery "amily on earth "rom the building material in the >nited States alone and under intensi%e culti%ation, this country #ould produce #ool, cotton, linen, and silk enough to cloth each person in the #orld "iner than Solomon #as arrayed in all his glory together #ith "ood enough to "eed them all lu&uriously! The %isible supply is practically ine&haustible and the in%isible supply really IS ine&haustible! )%erything you see on earth is made "rom one original substance, out o" #hich all things proceed! 2e# *orms are constantly being made, and older ones are dissol%ing but all are shapes assumed by +ne Thing! There is no limit to the

supply o" *ormless Stu"", or +riginal Substance! The uni%erse is made out o" it but it #as not all used in making the uni%erse! The spaces in, through, and bet#een the "orms o" the %isible uni%erse are permeated and "illed #ith the +riginal Substance #ith the "ormless Stu"" #ith the ra# material o" all things! Ten thousand times as much as has been made might still be made, and e%en then #e should not ha%e e&hausted the supply o" uni%ersal ra# material! 2o man, there"ore, is poor because nature is poor, or because there is not enough to go around! 2ature is an ine&haustible storehouse o" riches the supply #ill ne%er run short! +riginal Substance is ali%e #ith creati%e energy, and is constantly producing more "orms! When the supply o" building material is e&hausted, more #ill be produced #hen the soil is e&hausted so that "ood stu""s and materials "or clothing #ill no longer gro# upon it, it #ill be rene#ed or more soil #ill be made! When all the gold and sil%er has been dug "rom the earth, i" man is still in such a stage o" social de%elopment that he needs gold and sil%er, more #ill produced "rom the *ormless! The *ormless Stu"" responds to the needs o" man it #ill not let him be #ithout any good thing! This is true o" man collecti%ely the race as a #hole is al#ays abundantly rich, and i" indi%iduals are poor, it is because they do not "ollo# the /ertain Way o" doing things #hich makes the indi%idual man rich! The *ormless Stu"" is intelligent it is stu"" #hich thinks! It is ali%e, and is al#ays impelled to#ard more li"e! It is the natural and inherent impulse o" li"e to seek to li%e more it is the nature o" intelligence to enlarge itsel", and o" consciousness to seek to e&tend its boundaries and "ind "uller e&pression! The uni%erse o" "orms has been made by *ormless .i%ing Substance, thro#ing itsel" into "orm in order to e&press itsel" more "ully! The uni%erse is a great .i%ing Presence, al#ays mo%ing inherently to#ard more li"e and "uller "unctioning! 2ature is "ormed "or the ad%ancement o" li"e its impelling moti%e is the increase o" li"e! *or this cause, e%erything #hich can possibly minister to li"e is bounti"ully pro%ided there can be no lack unless 5od is to contradict himsel" and nulli"y his o#n #orks! :ou are not kept poor by lack in the supply o" riches it is a "act #hich I shall demonstrate a little "arther on that e%en the resources o" the *ormless Supply are at the command o" the man or #oman #ill act and think in a /ertain Way! /H,PT)0 ? The First Principle in The Science of Getting Rich TH+>5HT is the only po#er #hich can produce tangible riches "rom the *ormless Substance! The stu"" "rom #hich all things are made is a substance #hich thinks, and a thought o" "orm in this substance produces the "orm! +riginal Substance mo%es according to its thoughts e%ery "orm and process you see in nature is the %isible e&pression o" a thought in +riginal Substance! ,s the *ormless Stu"" thinks o" a "orm, it takes that "orm as it thinks o" a

motion, it makes that motion! That is the #ay all things #ere created! We li%e in a thought #orld, #hich is part o" a thought uni%erse! The thought o" a mo%ing uni%erse e&tended throughout *ormless Substance, and the Thinking Stu"" mo%ing according to that thought, took the "orm o" systems o" planets, and maintains that "orm! Thinking Substance takes the "orm o" its thought, and mo%es according to the thought! Holding the idea o" a circling system o" suns and #orlds, it takes the "orm o" these bodies, and mo%es them as it thinks! Thinking the "orm o" a slo#-gro#ing oak tree, it mo%es accordingly, and produces the tree, though centuries may be re4uired to do the #ork! In creating, the *ormless seems to mo%e according to the lines o" motion it has established the thought o" an oak tree does not cause the instant "ormation o" a "ull-gro#n tree, but it does start in motion the "orces #hich #ill produce the tree, along established lines o" gro#th! )%ery thought o" "orm, held in thinking Substance, causes the creation o" the "orm, but al#ays, or at least generally, along lines o" gro#th and action already established! The thought o" a house o" a certain construction, i" it #ere impressed upon *ormless Substance, might not cause the instant "ormation, o" the house but it #ould cause the turning o" creati%e energies already #orking in trade and commerce into such channels as to result in the speedy building o" the house! ,nd i" there #ere no e&isting channels through #hich the creati%e energy could #ork, then the house #ould be "ormed directly "rom primal substance, #ithout #aiting "or the slo# processes o" the organic and inorganic #orld! 2o thought o" "orm can be impressed upon +riginal Substance #ithout causing the creation o" the "orm! (an is a thinking center, and can originate thought! ,ll the "orms that man "ashions #ith his hands must "irst e&ist in his thought he cannot shape a thing until he has thought that thing! ,nd so "ar man has con"ined his e""orts #holly to the #ork o" his hands he has applied manual labor to the #orld o" "orms, seeking to change or modi"y those already e&isting! He has ne%er thought o" trying to cause the creation o" ne# "orms by impressing his thoughts upon *ormless Substance! When man has a thought-"orm, he takes material "rom the "orms o" nature, and makes an image o" the "orm #hich is in his mind! He has, so "ar, made little or no e""ort to co-operate #ith *ormless Intelligence to #ork 9#ith the *ather!9 He has not dreamed that he can 9do #hat he seeth the *ather doing!9 (an reshapes and modi"ies e&isting "orms by manual labor he has gi%en no attention to the 4uestion #hether he may not produce things "rom *ormless Substance by communicating his thoughts to it! We propose to pro%e that he may do so to pro%e that any man or #oman may do so, and to sho# ho#! ,s our "irst step, #e must lay do#n three "undamental propositions! *irst, #e assert that there is one original "ormless stu"", or

substance, "rom #hich all things are made! ,ll the seemingly many elements are but di""erent presentations o" one element all the many "orms "ound in organic and inorganic nature are but di""erent shapes, made "rom the same stu""! ,nd this stu"" is thinking stu"" a thought held in it produces the "orm o" the thought! Thought, in thinking substance, produces shapes! (an is a thinking center, capable o" original thought i" man can communicate his thought to original thinking substance, he can cause the creation, or "ormation, o" the thing he thinks about! To summari$e this7There is a thinking stu"" "rom #hich all things are made, and #hich, in its original state, permeates, penetrates, and "ills the interspaces o" the uni%erse! , thought, in this substance, Produces the thing that is imaged by the thought! (an can "orm things in his thought, and, by impressing his thought upon "ormless substance, can cause the thing he thinks about to be created! It may be asked i" I can pro%e these statements and #ithout going into details, I ans#er that I can do so, both by logic and e&perience! 0easoning back "rom the phenomena o" "orm and thought, I come to one original thinking substance and reasoning "or#ard "rom this thinking substance, I come to man3s po#er to cause the "ormation o" the thing he thinks about! ,nd by e&periment, I "ind the reasoning true and this is my strongest proo"! I" one man #ho reads this book gets rich by doing #hat it tells him to do, that is e%idence in support o" my claim but i" e%ery man #ho does #hat it tells him to do gets rich, that is positi%e proo" until some one goes through the process and "ails! The theory is true until the process "ails and this process #ill not "ail, "or e%ery man #ho does e&actly #hat this book tells him to do #ill get rich! I ha%e said that men get rich by doing things in a /ertain Way and in order to do so, men must become able to think in a certain #ay! , man3s #ay o" doing things is the direct result o" the #ay he thinks about things! To do things in a #ay you #ant to do them, you #ill ha%e to ac4uire the ability to think the #ay you #ant to think this is the "irst step to#ard getting rich! To think #hat you #ant to think is to think T0>TH, regardless o" appearances! )%ery man has the natural and inherent po#er to think #hat he #ants to think, but it re4uires "ar more e""ort to do so than it does to think the thoughts #hich are suggested by appearances! To think according to appearance is easy to think truth regardless o" appearances is laborious, and re4uires the e&penditure o" more po#er than any other #ork man is called upon to per"orm! There is no labor "rom #hich most people shrink as they do "rom that o" sustained and consecuti%e thought it is the hardest #ork in the #orld! This is especially true #hen truth is contrary to appearances! )%ery appearance in the %isible #orld tends to produce a corresponding "orm in the mind #hich obser%es it and this can only be pre%ented by holding the

thought o" the T0>TH! To look upon the appearance o" disease #ill produce the "orm o" disease in your o#n mind, and ultimately in your body, unless you hold the thought o" the truth, #hich is that there is no disease it is only an appearance, and the reality is health! To look upon the appearances o" po%erty #ill produce corresponding "orms in your o#n mind, unless you hold to the truth that there is no po%erty there is only abundance! To think health #hen surrounded by the appearances o" disease, or to think riches #hen in the midst o" appearances o" po%erty, re4uires po#er but he #ho ac4uires this po#er becomes a (,ST)0 (I2D! He can con4uer "ate he can ha%e #hat he #ants! This po#er can only be ac4uired by getting hold o" the basic "act #hich is behind all appearances and that "act is that there is one Thinking Substance, "rom #hich and by #hich all things are made! Then #e must grasp the truth that e%ery thought held in this substance becomes a "orm, and that man can so impress his thoughts upon it as to cause them to take "orm and become %isible things!
