By LOU CHIBBARO JR. lchibbaro@washblade.com About 75 people, including D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray and three members of the City Council, raised candles outside a former Whitman-Walker Clinic building at 14th and S streets, N.W., on Sunday night as part of the citys 26th Annual World AIDS Day commemoration. This day has been a day to remember all those who have been affected by the epidemic and to rededicate ourselves not only to continue the ght against HIV but actually nding a cure, said Whitman-Walker Health Executive Director Don Blanchon, who served as host of the event. On this World AIDS Day we have great hope and optimism that we may see the end of this epidemic in the not too distant future, Blanchon said. In this year we have seen tremendous advances in the ght. Weve seen dramatic improved statistics on HIV/ AIDS in our city. Gray, who pointed to a signicant drop in the HIV infection rate in D.C. over the past several years, said he too is optimistic that a cure for AIDS could come sooner rather than later. Its hard to believe that it wasnt many years ago that we talked about AIDS being a death sentence, Gray said. It is not a death sentence anymore. With the advancement of pharmacology, even those who have full-blown AIDS can live a rich life. As long as the people take their medicine and stay on their regimen they can live a full and rich life, he said. Blanchon said Whitman-Walker chose to hold this years World AIDS Day vigil at the 14th and S Street site because the building at 1407 S St., N.W., was the home of the then Whitman-Walker Clinic during the peak of the AIDS epidemic during the 1980s and early 1990s. He noted that Whitman-Walker Clinic, which has since been renamed Whitman-Walker Health, moved most of its patient care programs out of the 1407 S St. building in 1993, when it opened its Elizabeth Taylor Building one block away at 14th and U streets, N.W. Whitman-Walker continued to operate other programs in the S Street building until 2007, according to WhitmanWalker spokesperson Chip Lewis. The JBC Companies real estate development rm, which purchased the 1407 S St. building along with adjacent properties, last month, installed a

sculptured vertical column called the Pillar of Fire on the sidewalk outside the building. A plaque at the base of the sculpture says its dedicated to the Whitman-Walker Clinic and the many health care workers who served the LGBT community in this building from 1987 to 2008, the early years of the pandemic. D.C. Council member Jim Graham (D-Ward 1), who served as executive director of Whitman-Walker during its years at the 1407 S St. building, called on those attending the World AIDS Day gathering to remember the dedicated people who worked on AIDS-related causes in the early years of the epidemic. Like everybody else who is here, I want to remember. I dont want to forget. I want to really remember what happened, Graham said. And when I was committing to think of the people that I wanted to mention, there became too many names. People who ought to have been with us today are not. Among the names Graham mentioned were Gene Frey, a Whitman-Walker ofcial who died in the mid-1980s of AIDS and for whom Whitman-Walkers Gene Frey Award has been named. Others named were longtime Whitman-Walker supporters and local AIDS advocates Hank Card and Dusty Cunningham, both of whom also died of AIDS. Others attending the vigil were D.C. Council members David Grosso (I-AtLarge) and Tommy Wells (D-Ward 6). Also attending the event was Dr. Joxel Garcia, director of the D.C. Department of Health; and Michael Kharfen, acting director of the DOHs HIV/ AIDS, Hepatitis, STD, and Tuberculosis Administration (HAHSTA). Rev. Courtenay Miller, pastor of Norbeck Community Church of Silver Spring, Md.; and Rabbi Laurie Green of Bet Mishpachah, the D.C.-based synagogue that caters to the LGBT community, led prayers at the vigil.

Progress Along the HIV Care Continuum. The report describes the state of the epidemic, makes recommendations going forward and highlights local successes as well as public-private partnerships. In his remarks, Obama said signicant progress has been made in confronting HIV/AIDS since Congress rst allocated funds to ght the disease in 1983, but certain communities continue to be affected more than others, including LGBT people and those in the D.C. area. Here in the United States, we need to keep focusing on investments to communities that are still being hit hardest, including gay and bisexual men, African Americans and Latinos, Obama said. We need to keep up the ght in our cities including Washington, D.C., which in recent years has reduced diagnosed infections by nearly half. As Assistant to the President on Domestic Policy Cecilia Munoz pointed out at the start of the event, the Centers for Disease Control has reported gay and bisexual men account for two-thirds of all new HIV infections in the United States. Obama said after his remarks that he would sign into law the PEPFAR Stewardship and Oversight Act of

2013, which reauthorizes and extends funds under the Bush-era Presidents Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief to confront HIV/AIDS overseas. The PEPFAR program, Obama said, has exceeded goals set two years ago to help 6 million people across the globe receive treatment for HIV/AIDS by the end of 2013. As it stands, Obama said the program has helped 6.7 million people receive treatment. As part of the related effort to
maintain the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis & Malaria, Obama said the United States will contribute $1 for every $2 pledged by other donors over the next three years, up to $5 billion total. Dont leave our money on the table, Obama said. Its been inspiring to see the countries most affected by this disease vastly increase their own contributions to this ght in some cases, providing more than donor countries do. And that ought to inspire all of us to give more, to do more, so we can save more lives. Other accomplishments Obama touted included an end to waiting lists for drugs under the AIDS Drug Assistance Program. Two years after the Department of Health & Human Services announced that Obama directed $35 million to end the waitlists for federal drugs for HIV/AIDS, Obama said waitlists have since been eliminated. At one time, the need was so great that over 9,000 people were on the waitlist, Obama said. We vowed to get those numbers down, and Im proud to announce that, as of last week, we have cleared that waitlist. We are down to zero. Other initiatives Obama mentioned included old accomplishments, such as the lifting of the HIV travel ban, and new
efforts, including the signing of the HIV Organ Policy Equity Act, or HOPE Act, which enables HIV-positive people to donate organs to others with the disease. Additionally, Obama said early next year the United States would host a meeting with worldwide partners including governments, the Global Fund, U.N.-AIDS, and civil society to sit around one table and develop joint HIV prevention and treatment goals for the countries where we and the Global Fund do business. Well hold each other accountable, and well continue to work to turn the tide of this epidemic together, Obama said. Carl Schmid, deputy director of the AIDS Institute and an attendee at the event, praised Obama for the new initiatives, but said more work is necessary, particularly to address the HIV/AIDS infection rate among gay men. We are not making progress when it comes to gay men and more must be done, Schmid said. We hope that the administration along with the states and community-based organizations follow the strategy and, as was discussed at the White House today, follow the science and the epidemic, and for the U.S., that means a greater focus needs to be on gay men.

Possibly due to the criticism of Sebeliuss initial determination on the issue, a short time later the HHS Center for Consumer Information and Insurance Oversight, which oversees insurancerelated matters, issued a memo that appeared to contradict Sebeliuss interpretation of the Social Security Act. The latter development prompted the AIDS organizations and allied groups to send their Dec. 2 letter to Sebelius urging her to hold rm on her initial determination that the insurance exchanges are exempt from the Social Security Acts ban on drug company subsidies for prescription drug coverage. The D.C.-based national group Health HIV participated in efforts to recruit groups to sign the letter. According to the Wall Street Journal, drug companies spent about $4 billion on copayment assistance programs for patients with HIV and other illnesses in 2011. The paper cited experts in the pharmaceutical industry that said the assistance programs often lowered a patients co-payment from
$250 or more per month to just $5 per month for a prescription drug. Critics of the program say the subsidies often are given for brandname drugs and encourage patients not to request cheaper generic drugs. This forces insurance companies to pay more for the name-brand drugs, resulting in higher premiums for everyone in the long run, critics have said. But in their letter to Sebelius, the AIDS organization ofcials said most AIDSrelated drugs needed by people with HIV are not available in generic forms. [W]e urge you to consider the unintended consequences of suddenly removing industry-provided out-ofpocket assistance for brand-name drugs without generic equivalents from the patchwork of programs that so many people with serious and chronic conditions rely on, the joint letter says. It could potentially threaten access to lifesaving medications for thousands of people living with HIV; bar millions of people with hepatitis C from beneting from the new short-course curative treatment combinations; and keep
countless people with cancer and other debilitating and life-threatening illnesses from the treatment they need to stay alive, the letter says. We fear this will be a major setback to the goals of the Affordable Care Act, it says. HHS spokesperson Mike Robinson said he would make inquiries in response to a request by the Blade for Sebeliuss response to the joint letter by the AIDS organizations, but he did not immediately respond. Were still waiting for a clear determination from HHS, said Carl Schmid, deputy director of the AIDS Institute, one of the groups that signed on to the letter to Sebelius. There have been some mixed signals from the department. Schmid said the drug company assistance programs seek to help people with HIV who are not eligible for the federal-state AIDS Drug Assistance Program known as ADAP, which provides AIDS drugs to low-income people who dont have insurance. Although people being helped by the pharmaceutical company assistance
programs often are employed and have moderate incomes, the high cost of prescription drug co-payments could be devastating to them, Schmid and others familiar with the programs said. Some people with HIV need more than one drug for their treatment regimen, and co-payments under their insurance plans often result in co-payments of more than $200 per drug per month. Dan Mendelson, president of the heath care consulting rm Avalere Health LLC told the Wall Street Journal that the average silver health insurance plan under the Obamacare exchanges has a required annual deductible of $2,500. He told the WSJ that the average deductible for the bronze plans under the exchanges, which are said to be the cheapest plans, is $5,000. Schmid said these costs are often prohibitive for patients with modest incomes. The elimination of the drug company assistance programs under the Affordable Care Acts exchanges would create a serious burden on HIV patients and others who now rely on the assistance programs.
D.C. City Council, a restaurant ownerpolitical activist and ve lesser-known candidates have vowed to challenge his record, among other things, on grounds of ethics and political corruption. Similar to political activists across the city, several LGBT activists told the Blade that despite Grays solid record on LGBT issues they are reluctant to support the mayors re-election bid out of concern that he might be implicated in a two-and-a-half year ongoing investigation by the U.S. Attorneys ofce into Grays 2010 election campaign. Four people associated with the 2010 Gray campaign have pleaded guilty to felony charges stemming from allegations that they helped operate a secret shadow campaign that raised $655,000 without reporting the existence of those funds in violation of campaign reporting laws. Gray has said he knew nothing about the shadow campaign or alleged illegal activity by some of his campaign aides. Among those considered his main rivals are D.C. Council members Jack Evans (D-Ward 2), Muriel Bowser (D-Ward 4) and Tommy Wells (D-Ward 6). Also entering the race last month was Council member Vincent Orange (D-At-Large), who ran and lost his bid for mayor in 2006 to former Mayor Adrian Fenty. Political observers say Wells and Andy Shallal, owner of the local restaurant chain Busboys and Poets who has been a longtime advocate for progressive causes, could attract support from progressive voters because of their outspoken calls for campaign nance reform and stronger ethics-in-government laws. Veteran D.C. gay activist Bob Summersgill, a Ward 3 ANC commissioner and former president of the Gay and Lesbian Activists Alliance, is among the LGBT activists that supported Gray in 2010 but arent supporting him now. Summersgill said hes backing Wells for mayor. All of the major candidates have excellent records on LGBT issues, Summersgill said in response to a Blade survey of the citys LGBT activist leaders. I have largely looked at other issues in deciding who to support. Summersgill and Deacon Maccubbin, owner of the now closed Lambda Rising bookstore and a longtime Democratic

Party supporter, said they are backing Wells, among other things, because he has taken the lead in speaking out against political corruption and pushing for campaign nance and ethics reforms. Other prominent LGBT activists who backed Gray in 2010 said they remain strong supporters of Gray and plan to work to help the mayor win election to a second term. Ive been waiting to see what the mayor was going to do, said gay Democratic activist Lane Hudson. Now that hes announced he will seek re-election I am 110 percent in support of that. Hudson added, I think hes probably the most competent mayor we have ever had. He understands the D.C. government better than anyone that I know. He has been accessible and hes a hard worker. On LGBT issues, Hudson said of Gray, Theres never been anyone whos had
a better record on LGBT issues in D.C. politics. Others backing Gray are D.C. transgender activists Jeri Hughes and Alexandra Beninda, who called Gray the nations most supportive mayor on transgender issues. Hudson, Hughes and Beninda each said the fact that Gray has not been implicated in wrongdoing related to his 2010 mayoral campaign leads them to believe Grays long-stated assertion that the wrongdoing took place without his knowledge or approval. Barrie Daneker, treasurer of the Gertrude Stein Democratic Club, the citys largest LGBT political group, and John Fanning, a Ward 2 gay civic activist, are among a sizable number of LGBT activists backing Evans. The two note that Evans strong support for LGBT rights dates back to the beginning of his tenure as a Council member 20 years ago. Christopher Dyer, the gay
Democratic activist who served as director of the citys Ofce of GLBT Affairs under Mayor Fenty, is among the LGBT advocates backing Bowsers mayoral bid. Veteran gay activist A. Billy S. JonesHennin is among those who remain undecided in the mayoral race. I believe Gray has done a credible job as mayor, Jones-Hennin told the Blade, however, the cloud of his 2010 election woes is still lingering. Im impressed by the campaign of Bowser. One of the lesser-known mayoral candidates, Reta Jo Lewis, a former State Department ofcial, has said she is a strong supporter of LGBT rights. The positions on LGBT-related issues among the remaining candidates that took out petitions to get on the Democratic primary ballot for mayor couldnt immediately be obtained. LONG BEACH, Calif. A new program called the ADAM Project (Alcohol and Drug Advocacy for Men) offers substance abuse counseling and HIV prevention outreach to Latino and black gay and bi men ages 18-29, the Long Beach Press Telegram reports. Its based at the citys Gay and Lesbian Center and is one of several nonprot resources there that assist people who are HIV positive and work to prevent future infections. In Long Beach, about 90 percent of HIV and AIDS cases are in men who have had sex with other men, 67 percent are people under the age of 30 and 73 percent are Latino or black, according to 2011 Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services data, the most recent year for which numbers are available, the article noted. In a survey of 400 gay Latino and black men in Long Beach, ADAM Project workers found about 70 percent of the men said they had used illegal drugs in the past 30 days and more than 60 percent said they had unprotected sex with a man, John Kirby, director of development at Behavior Health Services (which partners with the Center in the effort), told the Telegram. He wrote the proposal that led to a ve-year, $2.5 million federal grant that funds the project. For 2011, 157 new HIV infections and 46 AIDS diagnoses were reported in Long Beach, compared with 127 new HIV infections and 46 AIDS diagnoses in 2010, the Telegram reports.

ating that space. In a country like Belarus, where nongovernmental organizations are required to register with authorities, LGBT activists face discrimination, threats and other abuse at the hands of the police. Just this year, Ihar Tsikhanyuk, an openly gay man and LGBT rights activist, was physically and verbally abused by police after he tried to register the Human Rights Center Lambda, an NGO that supports the rights of LGBT people in Belarus. Not long after rst registering the NGO, Ihar was taken from the hospital where he was being treated for a stomach ulcer to the police station. There police ofcers repeatedly punched and taunted him, demeaning him for being gay and threatening him with more violence. When police ofcers returned Ihar to the hospital, he asked for his injuries to be documented but the hospital staff refused. Those responsible for beating and threatening Ihar Tsikhanyuk have yet to be held accountable. Other activists connected to the Human Rights Center Lambda also remain at risk of further threats and abuse due to their sexual orientation or gender identity and continued LGBT activism. When silence accompanies abuse, it both condones and perpetuates the violence. Other human rights activists in Belarus face similar harassment and intimidation from authorities. While it is important to recognize that LGBT activists are not alone in the crackdown on freedom of expression and freedom of assembly in Belarus, the unique reality faced by LGBT activists targeted for their identities matters. Most people have, at some point in their lives, felt isolated or alone. For some, this alienation is brief and a community or individual embraces that person and changes their life. But imagine that you are isolated from other individuals or communities who share your
identity. LGBT people in countries like Belarus are trying to create that space to demonstrate to themselves and others that they are not alone. Every person has the human right to a life of dignity free from discrimination, but this is a distant reality for many who face grave personal risk just for expressing their identity. This year, Amnesty Internationals Wright for Rights campaign is standing with Ihar Tsikhanyuk and the members of the Human Rights Center Lambda. In December we will come together to send messages of solidarity by urging the government of Belarus to initiate a thorough, independent, and impartial investigation into the ill-treatment and threats that Ihar suffered at the hands of police ofcers. Activists like Ihar must be protected from further violence and humiliation. By joining us in writing to the Belarusian government, you can join millions of activists from around the world calling for change, so they too can create welcoming spaces without risk and advocate for their rights. This is our moment to echo around the world that LGBT activists and individuals are not alone.
EMILY MCGRANACHAN is the Social Media Lead for Amnesty Internationals LGBT Rights Coordination Group. This spring she will complete a masters degree in Ethics, Peace, and Global Affairs at American University.

Watching the 50-year-old CBS black and white broadcast from 1963, the weekend when Kennedy was assassinated, made me realize how different those times were. I remember vividly the nation and much of the world standing still for those four days. I watched as leaders of 80 nations including General Charles De Gaulle and Emperor Haile Selassie walked behind the caisson carrying President Kennedys body from the White House to St. Matthews Cathedral. I was struck by how the event was reported. We were able to actually watch much of what was happening without the constant chatter of an annoying anchorperson. Pictures were allowed to speak for themselves.
Plan to raise D.C. minimum wage too high, too fast will reduce jobs, hours

Local business groups, owners of both small and sizable businesses, and District residents have indicated support for an increased D.C. minimum wage. A hike in the current $8.25 per hour, one dollar higher than the federal minimum and already among one of the higher rates in the country, is not in question. What is at stake is whether an increase will be reasonable and responsible. On that score, the rst of two required D.C. Council votes on Tuesday afternoon unanimously approving a super-minimum wage hike fails. The legislation, advanced by lead sponsor Vincent Orange, provides for a threeyear phase-in beginning with a hike to $9.50
in July of next year, adding one dollar in two subsequent annual increases to reach $11.50 per hour on July 1, 2016. The rate would then stabilize, increasing commensurate to the consumer price index. To the overwhelming relief of tipped workers, the Council preserved the current applicable wage system specifying an employer-paid $2.77 per hour base pay and requirement that any differential in baseplus-tips and the minimum be guaranteed by employers in the rare instances that combined wages do not exceed it. Employees earning tips had worried that an increased base pay would reduce customer tipping and cause significant reductions in income. Tipped workers were also concerned that bars and restaurants would be forced to reduce both staffing and hours to accommodate the extraordinary costs of a higher base pay. Surprising to most, only approximately 4,000 of 745,000 employees at District businesses are paid the minimum wage. This modest 0.05 percent increases by an estimated 3,000 paid below the proposed rate when implemented, according to Council Chair Phil Mendelson. Contrary to public perception, few of these are bar and restaurant workers, where wages above the proposed level are com-
monplace. Fast food outlets, some national retail corporations and local community small businesses are thought to employ most of the small number earning less than $11.50 per hour. D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray reafrmed his support for a minimum wage increase in a letter to the Council immediately prior to the vote, smartly supporting a staged increase to a sensible $10 rate with no automatic trigger in subsequent years. Gray had also previously requested the Council support his plan for an immediate three-month study of the scope and impact of an increase to best determine a rational amount without deleterious effects. Council members, however, werent interested in facts or gures despite Grays pledge to provide them with data as acquired. Understanding implications would not require implementation delay. Instead, Council members are intent on forging ahead in an all-too-familiar acthastily worry-about-it-later manner, offering mutual self-congratulation for preliminarily approving the nations highest rate. Absent negatives at specic wage levels, mandating a much higher so-called living wage would be possible. Undisputed, however, are counterproductive rates caus-
ing economic harm. The math is no mystery. If a small business employs 10 full-time workers, the annual payroll increase from the current rate to $11.50 an hour is $71,500 in annual base costs alone. For many owners, that exceeds protability and their salary. Available solutions are reducing the number of employees or, to maintain stafng exibility, reducing hours or both. For some retailers and fast food franchisees, customer service automation is increasingly attractive. Ask CVS about selfscanned checkout, or the 7,000 McDonalds locations in Europe already utilizing ordering and payment kiosks. Blithely increasing the minimum wage too high and too fast causes low-skill employment to stagnate or suffer reductions in a city graduating only 59 percent of high school students and with high adult unemployment. No one should be surprised that a Council comprised of those with no practical private sector experience, real-world business operation or responsibility for meeting payrolls would place smug satisfaction ahead of those in need. The working poor and unemployed lowskill workers who desperately need smart leadership from elected ofcials will pay the price for this foolishly cavalier behavior.

We often say if we have to work too hard or think too hard about it, we must be going about it the wrong way. Often well just go with what ows the most naturally. This has been a philosophy that has held true in other areas of our career as well. Certain songs will just click faster and every once in awhile we have to really push for something but often theyre the ones that arent really well received. Weve just found that to be a kind of rule almost. BLADE: Do you all write? ELLIS-HENDERSON: (Lead singer) Nini (Camps) and I are the primary songwriters but were a band so we all have a part in it. Again, weve been together so long now, I almost know instinctually what Cathy (Henderson, Ellis-Hendersons sister) and (drummer) Dena (Tauriello) will bring to it. But yes, technically Nini and I hole up in a room, then we bring it to the band and the band takes it to the next level. BLADE: By now weve seen out singers be out in every way possible from coming out late in their careers, being out right from the start and every step in between. How calculated was the handling of that early on in the band? ELLIS-HENDERSON: In the earlier part of our career, we were often methodical
about trying to keep it on the inside. I never was comfortable with trying to keep it quiet because wed always played gay bars and anybody who paid attention knew it. But there were some in the band at the time who felt in the 90s, that it would be pigeonholing ourselves to be more out. We had some straight people in the band at the time and some members who felt pretty strong about that. I never really felt that way and I always knew our strongest support came from the lesbian and gay community. Then over time, the band has shifted members. I started a family and have a wife and kids so I cant really live my life in the closet. We say now the music and the band are pretty much an open book. Were here, were gay and were proud and we feel that goes hand in hand with being in a band. I know there are some artists who feel differently and thats ne. Everybody has their own approach. Some feel its not their place to try to change hearts and minds but I feel we have a bigger role and thats something we can all contribute to. BLADE: So it just kind of worked out that all the current members are lesbians? ELLIS-HENDERSON: Nini has been with us since 2008 but Cathy and Dena and I have been together almost 20 years. Cathy and I started the band and maybe ve years after that, Dena joined
us and has been with us about 15 years. Nini and I were always writing together and she toured with us some and was like an honorary member in some ways for a long time, back when we did some shows with the Bangles. But shes been ofcially with us about ve years. BLADE: That Was the Whiskey got some strong attention this year. Was that from an album or is it slated to be on one? ELLIS-HENDERSON: It wasnt and heres the thing and we are literally still in talks about this but we are discussing whether we want to ever release another album. Were seriously thinking about just offering a different download every other month and kind of making that our business model. Even with big acts like Miley Cyrus and Katy Perry who are on these huge major labels, they have these huge hits that everybody downloads and its like nobody even cares anymore about the rest of the album. I mean thats what the numbers are really showing. The whole industry is in disarray so were thinking of changing our business model and thinking this could be something we could be really successful at just going one song at a time and make each one an event.

ANGELA PEOPLES
How long have you been out and who was the hardest person to tell? Ive been out since 2009. I came out to my friends and my older sister rst. The hardest people to tell were my parents. I knew they would love me no matter what but I was scared that I would be disappointing them. Whos your LGBT hero? Audre Lorde Facebook post or Tweet? A picture of me at one of my oldest friends wedding. If your life were a book, what would the title be? Trying Not to Trip and Fall If science discovered a way to change sexual orientation, what would you do? I would be outraged that research dollars were being spent on such a ridiculous project and probably organize a campaign targeting the homophobic group or individuals funding the effort. What do you believe in beyond the physical world? I believe in a loving, gracious and just God. Whats your advice for LGBT movement leaders? I dont presume that Im in a place to give anyone advice. I would thank them for their commitment to our community and to progress. I would ask that we continue to be bold and challenge ourselves to make our movement more inclusive and safe for all people particularly trans people and LGBT people of color. What would you walk across hot coals for? Hot coals? Wow, sounds fun. What LGBT stereotype annoys you most? I am generally annoyed by gender binary stereotypes period, that goes for gay and straight folks. I think we put too much emphasis on what it means to be a man or a woman. Whats your favorite LGBT movie? Saving Face Whats the most overrated social custom? Greeting cards. I prefer a nice note. What trophy or prize do you most covet? Ive recently gotten more into running. In 2014 Id like to run in more races and collect a medal for a half marathon. What do you wish youd known at 18? That I was gay. Why Washington? I came to Washington because I wanted to effect policy change and be among people who share my passion for politics and progress.
Whats Washingtons best nightspot, past or present? Im more of a lounge or karaoke kind of girl but my fave party spots are MOVA ladies night on Wednesday and Peach Pit 90s dance party. Describe your dream wedding. Normally I would say on a beach with a small group of friends and family but sand and I dont get along that well. So, lets say a small ceremony with friends and family overlooking a beach. What non-LGBT issue are you most passionate about? Education, particularly higher education. I believe that education can be a great equalizer in a world where so many outside factors can pre-determine a persons access to opportunity. I am committed to creating sustainable models for quality and affordable education for all. What historical outcome would you change? I dont think I would change anything. Even though there have been a number of tragedies throughout history, you never know how one event might impact another in the future. Whats been the most memorable pop culture moment of your lifetime? I cant speak for an entire lifetime but the life and death of Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston are very memorable for me. Whitney and Michael were a huge part of my life growing up and I think they really helped to shape what it means to be an artist and a pop culture icon. On what do you insist? Authenticity and love. If nothing else we must be real with others but more importantly with ourselves. Its certainly not always easy but if we can all come from a place of authenticity and love then we can get through even the toughest challenges. What was your last

The cast of The Lyons. From left are NAOMI JACOBSON as Rita, JOHN LESCAULT as Ben, MARCUS KYD as gay son Curtis and KIMBERLY GILBERT as Lisa.
Sparring Lyons shows some humanity beneath the barbs and jabs
By PATRICK FOLLIARD Ah, the Lyons family. For a second they seem a not-unusual American middle class family: long-married parents, a partnered gay son and a divorced daughter with two young children. But then quickly you realize the subjects of playwright Nicky Silvers black comedy (straightforwardly titled The Lyons), are far from average in fact, they rank rather high on the familial dysfunction scale. Not as bad as the Manson family, but up there. Making its D.C.-area premiere at Round House Theatre, Silvers Broadway hit is in keeping with the gay playwrights tried and true M.O.: gay son protagonist navigating relationships with an unstable sister and selfinvolved mother. This particular incarnation kicks off in a hospital room where father Ben (a terric John Lescault) is dying from cancer while his unconcerned wife Rita (the reliably funny Naomi Jacobson) thumbs through decorating magazines. Eager to redo the living room despite her husbands objections, Rita chirpily reminds him that he wont be around to see the results anyway. Shortly the couple is joined by their adult daughter Lisa (Kimberly Gilbert), an insecure recovering alcoholic, followed by their seemingly composed gay son Curtiss (Marcus Kyd) who comes bearing an enormous peace lily. A visit that should be all about the dying father turns into anything but, soon erupting into an explosion of accusations, revelations and admissions. Throughout it all, Lescaults Ben who never speaks but yells, makes his distaste for Rita and disappointment in Curtis very clear by dropping a barrage of loud and well-aimed F-bombs. Silver jumps to and fro from biting dialogue to poignantly revealing monologues. His fabulously insensitive characters leave a trail of barbs, sarcasm and hurt feelings, but they also show ashes of insight, vulnerability and humanity. While each of the Lyons is
ferocious in their own way, beneath the contempt that holds them together lies some caring. As the good Jewish mother, Rita worries incessantly about her children nding reasonable mates. She also defends her young ercely. When her husband rst guessed that Curtis was gay, he tossed out his young sons Judy at Carnegie Hall album. That move resulted in Rita purchasing a handgun. Skilled director John Vreeke has assembled an exceedingly agile group of actors. As Curtis, Kyd gives a nuanced performance. When with the family, he comes off comparatively restrained. Gilberts wonderfully messy Lisa, lonely but hopeful, is the familys most sympathetic member. But its far from their parents that the siblings reveal the most Lisa more appropriately at an AA meeting. But Curtis lets his guard down looking at apartments with a disarming real estate agent played most affectively Brandon McCoy. The results are disastrous. Silvers characters act out in over-the-top ways (the productions program credits Joe Isenberg with the excellent ght choreography), but in terms of feelings theyre not so out there. Rounding out the talented cast is versatile actor Gabriela FernandezCoffey as a likable hospital nurse who changes from placid to hardboiled depending on the needs of each patient. The production looks just right. Misha Kachmans realistic revolving set doubles as a perfectly nice, standard issue hospital room and a vacant, no-frills New York studio apartment. Feel-good Philomena
Strong Dench performance anchors gay-themed dramedy
By BRIAN T. CARNEY With its winning combination of comedy, moral uplift and righteous indignation, and the surprisingly effective pairing of Dame Judi Dench and Steve Coogan, Philomena is an excellent addition to your holiday festivities. The lm is based on the true story of Philomena Lee (Dench), an unwed mother in Ireland who was forced to give her son up for adoption and to work in a convent laundry to atone for her sins and to reimburse the nuns for their obstetrical care. (The outrageous treatment of women like Philomena is explored in the award-winning 2002 documentary The Magdalena Sisters.) With the help of former journalist and disgraced politician Martin Sixsmith (Coogan), she decides to track down her son. After being stonewalled by the nuns at the convent in Roscrea where Philomena was conned, the unlikely duo travel to Washington to follow up some promising leads. Sixsmith discovers that Michael was adopted by wealthy American parents and ended up as a closeted advisor to President Ronald Reagan. Philomena is devastated to learn that her son died of AIDS, but the unlikely duo decide to track down Michaels friends and family to nd out more about the young man. Their road trip is both sad and funny, bringing together Philomenas amusing observations of American life (she cant wait to watch Big Mommas House on the hotel TV) and the moving memories of Michaels sister (who has been adopted from the same convent), female friend (and beard) and widower. The screenplay by Coogan and Jeff Pope (based on Sixsmiths memoir) deftly weaves together Philomenas sexual indiscretion with her sons repressive politics and closeted life, her unshaken faith in the Catholic Church against Sixsmiths world-weary cynicism and atheism, and her belief in forgiveness versus the unyielding and unchanging judgments of the nuns. It leavens these serious themes with some delicious comic moments Sixsmiths interactions with his editor and former colleagues, Philomenas delights at the perks of traveling on an expense account, and especially Philomena regaling the exasperated Sixsmith with the convoluted plot of one of her beloved romance novels. But despite its many strengths, the screenplay does not fully manage to make the real-life story believable as a free-standing movie. For example, although we learn that Philomena has married and had children and moved to London, we never nd out any details about her adult life. Likewise, we never learn in any detail about the scandal that has derailed Sixsmiths high-ying career. These details could have amplied the powerful themes of redemption, betrayal and secrecy in powerful ways. More seriously, though, the actions of the supporting characters are unmotivated. Michaels widower, for example, goes to great lengths to avoid Martin and Philomena, but we never know why, and Michael himself remains a closeted but pleasant cipher. Despite these aws, the center of this thoroughly enjoyable movie is the stellar performance of Dame Judi Dench. She creates a richly multi-faceted character with great sensitivity and restraint. Her performance is ably echoed by the talented Sophie Kennedy Clark as the young Philomena in well-written ashback sequences. Both actresses bring to vivid life Philomenas sensual delight in the ing that resulted in her pregnancy and the psychic and physical horrors of her cruel treatment by the avaricious nuns, as well the deep belief in the possibilities of human nature that brings about the powerful acts of forgiveness that cap the movie. Dench is also well-supported by Coogan, who is best known for his comic turns in such movie as Hamlet 2, but shines in the more dramatic role of the disgraced politician Martin Sixsmith. As both writer and director, Coogan avoids the sentimental clichs that could have bogged the movie down and fully embraces the less savory aspects of Sixsmiths character to make him a more effective foil to Philomena. Both funny and inspirational, Philomena is satisfying holidayseason cinematic fare. Its playing at Landmark E Street, Bethesda Row Cinemas and other area theaters.

Mamma Mia
Trans star of OWN reality show enjoying spotlight
By JOEY DiGUGLIELMO Mia Ryan is one of the main characters on Houston Beauty, a reality show on the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN). Its set in the Houston-based Franklin Beauty School where owner Glenda Ms. J Jemison runs a tight ship. Mia, a native Texan whos transgender and left a life of escorting, is one of the students working on a cosmetology license. The show debuted in late October and runs through Dec. 14. It airs on Saturday nights at 8 and 10 p.m. We caught up with Mia by phone a few weeks ago to talk about her experience on the show, which lmed in 2012. Shes still in Houston but is taking a break from Franklin to care for an elderly relative. She says shes about halfway through the process of earning her certication, which takes about nine months if one goes full time. Shes 18 now and started transitioning when she was 15. Billed in her media kit as only the third trans woman to have a recurring storyline on a major network TV show, Mia says she didnt seek out the opportunity. She simply learned a reality show was planned at the school at the time she happened to be enrolled there. I went to Franklin in an attempt to better my life and career and the show was just there, she says. I was kind of standofsh at rst. I didnt feel my life was something to be proud of with the things I was doing so it took me awhile to open up. She says the feedback so far has been highly positive. I opened up and allowed my life to be an open book to America, she says. Everyone has been really proud of me and I hope I can possibly inspire someone else. Anybody whos seen the show knows the exchanges have wrought plenty of drama, necessary to sustain any reality show. Her exchanges with Ms. J who has insisted on referring to her at times by the boy name she grew up with have fueled some of the more heated moments. She is a good person but she has some growing up to do, Mia says of the instructor. Shes from the older generation and is just not too fond of alternative lifestyles. Mia says Ms. J did come around to some degree during the shooting, but says there were still tough moments. She had never experienced a Mia Ryan before, she says. I dont know if it was because I was transgender or what. I couldnt quite put my nger on why she treated me differently. Maybe she sensed more expectation in me and so she felt she needed to be harder on me, I dont know. Mia says contrary to assumptions about reality TV, the situations and tensions seen on the show were not rigged. I think any viewer who watches these shows knows these things cant really be faked, she says. Those were actual things that were occurring at the time. It was real and in some ways, it was a lot worse than what you actually see on the show. They had to do a lot of cutting and editing to get it down to an episode, so there was a lot more than what they used. Mia says the outspoken Queensley is the only person on the show shes still in touch with regularly. She plans to continue at Franklin when she is able. Of course I never thought something like this would happen, she says. Id seen transgender people like Laverne Cox (of Orange is the New Black) and Isis King (of Americas Next Top Model) and Ive been truly inspired by those women as well. I always wanted to do something inspiring to help people. I just didnt think it would unfold like this.

MOVA-based Stonewall Darts gearing up for third season
By KEVIN MAJOROS Registration for the winter season of Stonewall Darts opens Monday and runs through Thursday (Dec. 12). League fees are $35 for returning players and $40 for new players. The League was launched in January when some space in a back room opened up at MOVA Lounge D.C. I was bartending at MOVA when my bosses indicated that something needed to be created for the back room, says Austin Henderson, commissioner and founder. Henderson, who also plays Stonewall Kickball and Stonewall Bocce, went on a road trip to Harrisburg, Pa., and stumbled upon an LGBT darts league. I came back and told my bosses about it, Henderson says. Next thing you know, we launched a league with 72 players. The second season of the League grew to 94 players and the coming season, its third, is expected to cap out at 108 players with six players per team. The players consist of male and female members of the LGBT community and their allies and the League will play on Thursday nights from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at MOVA starting on Jan. 9. Players can join as a six-member team
or sign up as free agents to be placed on a team. The season runs for eight weeks and is followed by the league playoffs. At the beginning of each season, the teams nominate a charity of their choice to be the benefactor of any money raised by the respective teams who make it to the playoffs. At the Mid-Season Social, teams have an additional opportunity to raise funds for their charities. Last summer we had a bachelor and bachelorette auction at mid-season to supplement the money that is raised by the teams in the playoffs, Henderson says. Over the past two seasons, we have raised over $4,200 for charities such as the Trevor Project, Marthas ADVERTISING Table, City Dogs Rescue and the Point PROOF #1 ISSUE DATE: 12.06.13 SALES REPRESENTATIVE: BRIAN PITTS (bpitts@washblade.com) Foundation. DEAR MICHAEL, Is there a way to know when youve met the right person? Im 23 and have been with my girlfriend for ve years, since our rst week of college, and she recently proposed to me. Im really excited, but am also scared to say yes. Shes the only woman Ive ever dated or really had sex with. Im afraid that if I get married to her, Ill always wonder what it would be like to be with someone else, and if I might have an even better relationship with someone else. We really love each other, have a lot to talk about, enjoy the same things and have really good sex. Still, it seems kind of crazy to marry the rst gal Ive been with. There are so many possibilities out there. Sometimes I meet a really cool woman through my work or socially and wonder what it would be like to be with her. But because I met Beth before anyone else, I am with Beth. How can I know if shes the best possible partner for me? And if I am not sure of that, how can I marry her? MICHAEL REPLIES: Rather than looking for the best possible partner, how about picking a person who is imperfectly wonderful? Relationships are complicated and never perfect. The same is true for our spouses. The person with many great qualities is bound to have some notso-great qualities as well, most likely noticed after you have been with her long enough. And keep in mind that your wife will have the same experience of you. Instead of trying to nd a relationship that will give you the loveliest ride possible through life, think of a

TERRI SCHLICHENMEYER has been reading since she was 3 years old. She lives in Wisconsin with two dogs and 12,000 books. Reach her at bookwormsez@yahoo.com.
Mom always said you were two of a kind. You and your favorite sibling: yin and yang, two halves of a whole. A lot of lm was spent documenting your lives. A lot of memories are shared when you get together. Once upon a time, you knew exactly what your sib was thinking or did you? Read the new book My Brother My Sister by Molly Haskell, and you might wonder. Growing up in Richmond , Va., in the post-WWII years, Molly Haskell, her brother Chevey and their friends enjoyed the same clubs, schools, cotillions and churches. She remembers a childhood of privilege and happiness. Her brother remembers sneaking up to Haskells closet to try on her clothes. Of course, that was unknown to Haskell until years later, when Chevey came to her in New York and told her that hed decided to act on something that had vexed him for decades: nervously, he explained that he had gender dysphoria. Hed been on hormones for months. Years ago, hed thought of himself as Ellen, the woman he knew he was inside. It was something that Haskell never saw coming. Chevey had been married twice. His rst wife knew of his feelings, as did his second wife, but the latter was struggling with acceptance. So, in
fact, was Haskell, though she was also curious to know the particulars. When did Chevey know? (At age 7). How did he decide to do this? (The urge was so strong that he could do nothing else). Why did he wait 50-some years to transition? (Many reasons, including family). He likened his gender to a birth defect. It was time to make things right. As Chevey became Ellen, Haskell mourned the loss of her brother. When Ellen informed the rest of the family of her news, Haskell kept waiting for the sky to fall but nothing happened. Yes, there were slips, gaffes, hurts and a few surprising ATTORNEY AT LAW revelations, but the world didnt end. Lucky for me, says Haskell, my SERVING OUR COMMUNITY FOR 32 YEARS newly minted sister is still the magnicent human being my brother was. Theres an awful lot of poor-me-ing in PERSONAL INJURY PROBATE the beginning of My Brother My Sister; a lot of hand-wringing from author Molly WILLS/ POAs CIVIL LITIGATION Haskell, and too much fretting about how her CONSERVATORSHIPS GUARDIANSHIPS brothers transformation would affect her. 2141 P STREET NW SUITE 103 While some readers might imagine how WASHINGTON DC 20037 theyd feel in the same situation, its pretty E-MAIL steveweinbergdc@aol.com tedious, angst-ridden reading. About 75 people turned out for a candlelight vigil on Sunday to commemorate World AIDS Day.
BLADE: But isnt there something creatively satisfying with a longer-form artistic statement, both for yourselves and for the hardcore fans who do want something to sink their teeth into? ELLIS-HENDERSON: I understand what youre saying, but its just an art form thats practically non-existent anymore. I can feel that way as an artist but I have to be realistic too and thats just the way music is being consumed. I am one of those people who likes to ooh and aah over a tangible product so were thinking about the end of the year, maybe putting out an EP of that years songs. Weve always had a slightly different business model, though. We record our shows and sell them and its just different from the Katy Perrys of the world and these huge artists. Yes, I could sit here and lament the death of the record album and CD and I do, but at the same time I mean even with me, there are only a handful of artists, Shawn Colvin for one, who I want to hear start to nish. I dont really care about Katy Perrys full album. I want her singles though. I think this could be a more interesting way to go than disappearing off the face of the earth for two years. BLADE: How rigid have you found the lines to be in various markets? It strikes me as pretty cool that CMT would play your video. ELLIS-HENDERSON: Yeah, I nd it kind of shocking. Nashville as a rule is still pretty closeted. There are certain artists there whom I know are gay who will intentionally not join us for dinner out there or they just never seem to be able to make it to our show when were in town. There are others who support us wholeheartedly but Nashville is denitely about 25 years behind New York and L.A. and even D.C., you know the more forward markets. Even Atlanta is more progressive than Nashville. I kinda love the contradiction. Heres this really rowdy band and a song about whiskey but in the video, she leaves with a guy and a girl. I love pushing that boundary. I think its changing too. We have people like Kacey Musgraves singing her song about make lots of noise/kiss lots of boys/ or kiss lots of girls if thats something youre into. GLAAD Tweeted about it. It literally gave me chills to see her on the CMAs singing that to the whole country community. I think the fact that shes not gay actually helps. Its one inch closer. BLADE: Is your show at Jammin Java part of a larger tour or do you just go out here and there? ELLIS-HENDERSON: Were kind of on perpetual tour. It goes in spurts. Were raising families, which is really
contradictory to the rock and roll lifestyle, so were always going out in little ts and spurts. Well do some holiday-themed shows since its December. BLADE: Is this show part of that? ELLIS-HENDERSON: Yeah. We have a new Christmas single and well denitely two or three other Christmas songs too. Well give the show a little Christmas twist. BLADE: How long is your show on average? ELLIS-HENDERSON: We do about 80 minutes and play maybe 18-20 songs. Were a live band so were always a little spontaneous. Its always a slightly different show. BLADE: Does Cathy braid her own hair? ELLIS-HENDERSON: She doesnt. Shes got this woman, Nancy, whos been doing it forever. If were going out, she needs like eight hours the day before to get her hair braided. In a pinch or like on really long tours, Ive done it and oh my God, it is a process. Im always thinking, Just get dreads already. If I have to do it, she just gets six or seven big rows. Thats all I have the brainpower to be able to handle. BLADE: If you had to guess, what percentage of the people who come to your shows are LGBT? ELLIS-HENDERSON: Its so hard to say. I kind of always assume theyre gay. Im like, Oh my God, you look gay to me. I would guess about 60 percent are LGBT. In some ways it seems more mixed than ever. But we have a large gay following and I love it. Weve always had that support. Even when we were just a tiny little indie band wed be out in these random markets, these little college towns, and wed have clubs willing to book us on a Tuesday night because there was never a room that there werent 10 or 15 young lesbians who traveled to see us. Thats the great thing about the gay community, we support each other. Then wed have people say, Wow, you got a little crowd even on a weeknight, well have you back and the next time those 10 or 15 would bring a few more so thered be 15 or 20 more and wed have 50. Were so grateful for that support. BLADE: But do you ever fear that that ends up becoming the bands whole shtick, or at least that some will have the perception that thats all youre about? ELLIS-HENDERSON: Not for me. I nd it a blessing and an honor to talk about it and maybe be a role model or an advocate. I love talking about activism, thats why I blog. Its a passion.

REAL ESTATE
By TED SMITH The busy real estate market in D.C. and other cities typically occur in the spring and fall months. After sales peak in June, summer starts slowing down especially August when Congress and most of the rest of town is shut down. But the really slow season for real estate is winter. The following graph shows the average of active listings and sold listings in Washington for the last ve years:
The graph shows the two peaks for active listings (available inventory) in April-June and September-October, as well as the peak for sold listings in June. Sales fall off to a fairly even level from September to November, but begin falling from December down through January and February, when they begin rising through the spring market toward the June sales peak.

The mid-30s siblings have long been a well-known D.C. duo serving as both business operation and beverage program managers and consultants at a number of restaurant and bar hotspots, in addition to bartending gigs. Divergent in appearance and personality, Ari and Micah are similar in their professional commitment to an industry that has been their focus since college. The well-traveled bi-coastal boys grew up spending serial segments of their youth shuttling between parents living in the San Francisco and Washington areas. Outgoing personalities enjoying center-stage soon sparked bartending stints. While studying in southern California, Ari would drive to San Francisco to visit Micah, then at the Academy of Art University and bartending on weekends. Micah would pull me behind the bar, review basic bartending details, and then disappear on a break, Ari recounts, and Id get slammed. But I loved it. Today Ari manages operations and balances the books, while Micah tends to food and beverage menus along with creative details. What motivates these dynamic entrepreneurs is being among highly regarded culinary and entertainment operators in the area. They interrupt each other describing their excitement at being part of a movement to bring Adams Morgan back to life with innovative new venues that residents desire. Theyre on track to soon open a separate third-oor multi-level live music and DJ venue rock-and-sports pub inspired by their German-Austrian heritage, including a replace-enhanced outdoor deck. We saw this location as an opportunity to contribute our passion and commitment to quality craftsmanship in all that we do, joining other businesses in re-dening an area in need of new and appealing concepts, Ari says. Adams Morgan has suffered through hard times, adds Micah, but now is when it can ourish again. The Wilder brothers are proud to be a community asset in that process.
