In December 2012, Cyril Ramaphosa was elected deputy president of Nelson Mandela's African National Congress Party, and in turn, of South Africa. The election completed his transformation from anti-apartheid activist and labor leader to businessman to technocrat politician. ANC insiders say it's a job that Mandela always wanted for Ramaphosa, who in the years since the end of Apartheid has become one of South Africa's most successful businessmen. His majority-black-owned Shanduka Group owns stakes in mining entities, financial institutions, McDonald's South African subsidiaries and Coca-Cola bottling plants. In December 2011, China Investment Corporate purchased 25% of Shanduka for $245 million. Ramaphosa first came to prominence in the 1980s as founder and promoter of the National Union of Mineworkers, created to improve the rights of black African workers. In 1991, at age 39, he was elected secretary general of the African National Congress and was the main negotiator with the National Party during the transition to democracy. After less than three years in parliament Ramaphosa resigned in 1997, first joining New Africa Investments and then starting the Shanduka Group. His wife Tshepo is the sister of fellow South African tycoon Patrice Motsepe.
