Research Summary

Opinion Statement: I believe this article was quite interesting because it very to the point so it was helpful that it was quite factual. Being so it helped clarify some facts that I already had previous knowledge on and it informed me that more hospitals are recogni ing the problem with an increase in inductions and trying to stop them.

!oint ": #uring the past $% years the amount of inductions has very significantly increased. &hey used to be about one in every ten births and now they have risen to one in every three births. 'hile there are medical reasons for inductions such as hypertension and diabetes( the rise has been due to mothers choosing induction for the reason of convenience

!oint$: Inductions can pose serious health risks for both moms and babies. 'omen e)periencing labor through elective or medical inductions are at a much greater risk of cesarean sections which is ma*or surgery. Because of these +c,sections+ women are at a greater risk for complications associated with abdominal surgery( such as bleeding( adhesions( abnormal placenta implantation in future pregnancies( and infection.

!oint -: &o reverse the trend of induced labors many hospitals and health care systems are implementing new policies that encourage spontaneous labor since there are no research studies that show that elective inductions are as safe for mothers and babies as spontaneous labor. Researchers found that after these policies were implemented overall induction rates declined and spontaneous labor rates increased.

!oint .: !ositive health outcomes for infants were attributed to the implementation of elective labor induction policies. &here were lower rates of /eonatal Intensive 0are 1nit 2/I013 admissions( decreased still births( reduced meconium and amniotic fluid aspiration( increase in one, minute 4ppearance( !ulse( 5rimace( 4ctivity( and Respiration 24!54R3 scores( decrease in infants with one or more neonatal complications and a decline in prematurity rates

!oint 6: 4n increase of spontaneous labor occurred when inductions were postponed or avoided. Induction policies allow nurses to implement evidence, based practice and improve health outcomes for mothers and their newborns. 7ospitals with induction policies will improve the quality of their services and positively affect the safety of the women and infants they serve

4dditional Info: I have witnessed several births with an induction and several without and the women who were induction patients often had a much longer labor and were more tired at the end because of the very long process.
