Formerly, Waltz covered politics, the Governor’s office &
Delaware General Assembly for the Wilmington (DE) News
Journal papers from 1975-77, where he was State Capital
Bureau Chief. He also was a political reporter for the
Champaign Urbana (IL) Courier 1970-75. He hosted 12
Central, one of the country’s first magazine-format public
affairs TV talk shows from 1974-75 for WILL-TV, Ch. 12, and
he is a political columnist for Delaware Today magazine.
Sam Waltz is a VietNam-Era Veteran with service in US Army
CounterIntelligence Corps from 1967-70, where he worked on
domestic civil disobedience issues. With BS & MS degrees in
communications from the University of Illinois, he completed
doctoral courses in public policy at the University of Delaware
from 1975-80. He has served as an adjunct professor at three
universities, Illinois, Drexel and Delaware, where he has
taught since 1988-89. Presently he teaches upper-level
courses in Organizational Behavior & Organizational
Development for the UD Lerner College of Business.
A regional & national small business leader, Sam Waltz
served since 1998 on the National Advisory Committee to the
US Small Business Administration. He chaired Delaware’s
Delegation to the White House Conference on Small
Business, the Governor’s Conferences on Small Business in
1995 & 1997 and the Delaware Leadership Council of the
National Federation of Independent Business 1997–2007.
He has served on the Boards of the University of Delaware’s
Council for Economic Education & Entrepreneurship since
1994, and the First State Community Loan Fund and
Delaware Safety Council since 2005. He served 1996-2002
on the Board of Managers of the Delaware State Chamber of
Commerce’s SBA and the Board of Directors of the Better
Business Bureau of Delaware 1997–2007.
He was 1997-98 president of the Greenville-Centreville Rotary
Club, and he is active in the Rotary Club of Wilmington (DE).
He has served on the Steering Committee for the Delaware
Leadership Foundation Prayer Breakfast since 2001, and he is
Board VP of The Little Sisters of the Poor (DE). Waltz was the
2002 President of the Lincoln Club of Delaware. He chaired
the First Amendment Congress of Delaware in 1991.
The Delaware March of Dimes & American Cancer Society
honored him for his Board efforts in fighting tobacco & youth
smoking. A Vice Chair of the 1986 and 1987 statewide
Campaign Cabinets of the United Way of Delaware, he served
as a trustee of the University of Illinois Alumni Association
from 1991-95, a director of the Delaware State Fair from 1977-
86 and of Central YMCA of Delaware from 1982-86.
Personal interests include historical tourism, Mr. Lincoln, Jeff
Davis, civil war history, whitewater rafting, hiking & jogging,
youth sports coaching, and college sports. A native of a
Central Illinois farm, Mr. Waltz is married to Sandra Bihary
Waltz, a pharmaceutical regulatory exec, and he has three
children, Samuel III (31), Rachel (29) and Andrew (26).
