South Africa's first black president and anti-apartheid icon Nelson Mandela has died at the age of 95. Mr Mandela led South Africa's transition from white-minority rule in the 1990s, after 27 years in prison for his political activities. He had been receiving intensive medical care at home for a lung infection after spending three months in hospital. Announcing the news on South African national TV, President Jacob Zuma

said Mr Mandela was at peace. "Our nation has lost its greatest son," Mr Zuma said. "Although we knew that this day would come, nothing can diminish our sense of a profound and enduring loss." Mr Zuma said Mr Mandela - who is known affectionately by his clan name, Madiba - had died shortly before 21:00 local time (19:00 GMT). He said he would receive a full state funeral, and flags would be flown at half-mast. Crowds have gathered outside the

house where Mr Mandela died, some flying South African flags and wearing the shirts of the governing African National Congress, which Mr Mandela once led. The Nobel Peace Prize laureate was one of the world's most revered statesmen after preaching reconciliation despite being imprisoned for 27 years. He had rarely been seen in public since officially retiring in 2004. He made his on Page 3 at the last Continued public appearance in 2010,

South Africa and world mourn Nelson Mandela death

Continued From Page 1
football World Cup in South Africa. His fellow campaigner against apartheid, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, said he was "not only an amazing gift to humankind, he made South Africans and Africans feel good about being who we are. He made us walk tall. God be praised." BBC correspondents say Mr Mandela's body will be moved to a mortuary in the capital, Pretoria, and the funeral is likely to take place next Saturday. 'Bid him farewell' Mr Zuma said in his statement that "what made Nelson Mandela great was precisely what made him human. We saw in him what we seek in ourselves. "Fellow South Africans, Nelson Mandela brought us together and it is together that we will bid him farewell." UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said he was "a giant for justice and a down-to-earth human inspiration". "Many around the world were greatly influenced by his selfless struggle for human dignity, equality and freedom. He touched our lives in deeply personal ways." US President Barack Obama said Mr Mandela achieved more than could be expected of any man. "He no longer belongs to us - he belongs to the ages," he said, adding that Mr Mandela "took history in his hands and bent the arc of the moral universe towards justice". Mr Obama, the first black president of the United States, said he was one of the millions who drew inspiration from Mr Mandela's life. He has ordered that the White House flag be flown at half-mast. FW de Klerk, who as South Africa's last white president ordered Mr Mandela's release, called him a "unifier" and said he had "a remarkable lack of bitterness". He told the BBC Mr Mandela's greatest legacy "is that we are basically at peace with each other notwithstanding our great diversity, that we will be taking hands once again now around his death and around our common sadness and mourning". The Elders - a group of global leaders set up by Mr Mandela to pursue peace and human rights - said they "join millions of people around the world who were inspired by his courage and touched by his compassion". The group's chair, Kofi Annan, said the world had lost "a clear moral compass". "While I mourn the loss of one of Africa's most distinguished leaders, Madiba's legacy beckons us to follow his example to strive for human rights, reconciliation and justice for all." UK Prime Minister David Cameron said "a great light has gone out in the world". Earlier this year, Mr Mandela spent nearly three months in hospital with a recurring lung infection. He was moved to his home in the Houghton suburb of Johannesburg in September, where he continued to receive intensive care. Robben Island Born in 1918, Nelson Mandela joined the African National Congress (ANC) in 1943, as a law student. He and other ANC leaders campaigned against apartheid. Initially he campaigned peacefully but in the 1960s the ANC began to advocate violence, and Mr Mandela was made the commander of its armed wing. He was arrested for sabotage and sentenced to life imprisonment in 1964, serving most of his sentence on Robben Island. It was forbidden to quote him or publish his photo, but he and other ANC leaders were able to smuggle out messages of guidance to the antiapartheid movement. He was released in 1990 as South Africa began to move away from strict racial segregation - a process completed by the first multi-racial elections in 1994. Mr Mandela, who had been awarded the Nobel Prize in 1993 jointly with Mr de Klerk, was elected South Africa's first black president. He served a single term, stepping down in 1999. After leaving office, he became South Africa's highest-profile ambassador, campaigning against HIV/Aids and helping to secure his country's right to host the 2010 football World Cup. He was also involved in peace negotiations in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi and other countries in Africa and elsewhere. 1918 Born in the Eastern Cape 1943 Joined African National Congress 1956 Charged with high treason, but charges dropped after a four-year trial 1962 Arrested, convicted of incitement and leaving country without a passport, sentenced to five years in prison 1964 Charged with sabotage, sentenced to life 1990 Freed from prison 1993 Wins Nobel Peace Prize 1994 Elected first black president 1999 Steps down as leader 2001 Diagnosed with prostate cancer 2004 Retires from public life 2005 Announces his son has died of an HIV/Aids-related illness

The High Court in Suva acquitted a man of raping a girl in Naitasiri in 2012 because of contradictions in the victim's evidence. High Court Judge Justice P Kumararatnam overturned the assessors' guilty verdict in the trial of Sanaila Rakula Tuikubulau because there were contraditions in evidence presented by the victim, creating a "genuine doubt". "The prosecution has failed to prove the case against the accused beyond reasonable doubt," Justice Kumararatnam said. "The evidence of the victim tainted with serious contradictions and omissions which certainly affect the root of the case."

Judge Overturns Verdict, Rape Accused Goes Free

Tuikubulau was accused of raping the girl on January 20, 2012 at Baulevu village. The victim was 16 years and eight months at the time of the incident. When the matter was first reported, she told police that the accused grabbed her, pushed her towards the laundry area where he raped her. Because she was wearing a long skirt, she said she could not run. She tried to scream but the accused had his hand over her mouth. In cross examination, she admitted the accused had proposed to her while they were seating on the steps leading to the washing room where the alleged rape took place. She said she did not raise cries as the accused wanted to speak to her.

Not For Political Gain: Fiji PM Bainimarama Fiji's Prime Minister Commodore service delivery to our customers.
Voreqe Bainimarama denies that efforts and promises his government has done for the country and all Fijians is for political gain. Speaking at the launch of Vodafone's 4G LTE Network, the head of the Fijian Government says it's not some empty gesture, but an attempt to fundamentally reposition Fiji for a better future." He said government's efforts will not only benefit Fijians but also other Pacific Island countries who look to Fiji for leadership and assistance. We want Fiji to become the conduit, Bainimarama said. He said government's vision is to improve people's lives in all aspects hence commended Vodafone Fiji for the achievement describing it as a great leap forward for the country's entire ICT sector. Its barely three months since the 4G spectrum allocation was made. So for Vodafone to fully functioning 4G network in such a short space of time is a genuinely impressive achievement Vodafone Fiji Managing Director Aslam Khan credited team work for successfully rolling out the 4G network saying it was an easy exercise for them because they already had the necessary infrastructure in place. We were always ready. Now with the launch we look forward to enhancing

Bainimarama has assured that customers will experience benefits of the zero duty policy it has placed on smartphones saying a taskforce has been set up to ensure that importers and retailers adhere to directives by imposing reasonable prices on these gadgets. Meanwhile, an expert who has studied autocratic regimes moving towards democracy says the transition in Fiji has a high chance of success if both the government and its opponents have moderates at the helm. Dr Paul Buchanan, who advised the US government on Latin American politics, says the best scenario involves moderates or softliners on each side coming to informal agreements and guarantees before the elections. Dr Buchanan says Fiji is a classic case where government interests have to be guaranteed in the first instance if a successful transition is to occur. The opposition has to bite the bullet and as much as they thirst for revenge and in the cases I am very familiar with, you know were talking the torture and death of family members, you just have to bite the bullet in the interests of achieving a democratic objective and then maybe in ten, fifteen years bring those responsible to justice," Dr Buchanan told Radio New Zealand International.

Yaqona Pounding Caution

WHILE it may be difficult to penalize those who damage road surfaces by pounding yaqona on them, the Fiji Roads Authority is pleading with people to refrain from such activities for safety reasons. Authority CEO Neil Cook said there were penalties available for people who pound yaqona on roads. "The enforcement, however, may be difficult from our perspective," Mr Cook said. "We surely don't want any road damage caused by people who pound grog on the roads. "We are also concerned about the safety of those who use the road to pound grog and that is more important as they put their lives at risk." The Land Transport Authority has labeled such activities a hazard. LTA spokesman Iliesa Sokia said activities to raise funds on the roads had been labeled a road hazard because it directly distracted motorists' visibility, holding up traffic flow and slowing vehicle movement. "A very common site that is very visible almost on all roads in Fiji, especially in major urban areas, is the use of roads as playgrounds and used also for pounding yaqona," he said. "The pounding of yaqona on roadsides is both a safety and a cost concern to the authority and to authorities such as the Fiji Roads Authority. "The LTA warns the public they are putting their lives at risk when using roadside or footpaths to pound grog and play. "Road surfaces also get damaged after continuous pounding, leaving potholes on the roadside. It costs hundreds of dollars to patch up and repair a small pothole."

Meanwhile, Carpenters Fiji head of retail and marketing, Kuna Sabaratnam said this year would be the sixth year anniversary for them entertaining the Cancer Society by spreading Christmas cheer with them. We want to remind them that they are not forgotten in this festive season and we will surely continue with this tradition, Mr Kuna said. Fijipay, Jan Deadline

Fijis banks are yet to sign up to the National Switch and FijiPay system, with two months left before the government set deadline. Attorney General Aiyaz SayedKhaiyum says all banks and institutions have to connect at the latest by January 2014. He said the government has had a series of meetings with the financial institutions who are aware of the new system whereby all financial institutions and other institutions, who may wish to, including TLTB and FSC, are connected on a common platform, allowing consumers and businesses to enjoy improved electronic services at a reasonable fee. But whether or when the banks will join the system remains to be seen. Requests for comments from ANZ, BSP Fiji and even Fijis central bank were turned down because they said it was a "sensitive issue". Going on to the National Switch is expected to mean some loss in revenue for these financial institutions because on a common platform they will have to charge fees expected to be lower than what they are currently charging customers. Sayed-Khaiyum said the national switch and pay system will ease and reduce the cost of electronic transactions for consumers and businesses. Eventually the idea is to reduce the cost of electronic transaction; we would like to progressively reduce the fee which means you use it [bank ATM card] more frequently so it becomes volume based. In that way you can connect with even more, SayedKhaiyum said. The National Switch will in turn facilitate the FijiPay system. You can have a card where money can be loaded onto your account. Welfare recipients for example need not necessarily open a bank account because money can simply be loaded onto their card and they can through the national switch system access that money through any outlet. They can even access that money through the supermarket using EFTPOS transactions. The new system is being done up by governments ITC department in conjunction with Indian IT company Yalamanchili. Sayed-Khaiyum says the system will be implemented soon.

Family Loses All In Blaze

Bridges around the country, like the road network, have been neglected over the years making it a key component of Fijis infrastructure overhaul. Along with roads and jetties, Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) has been adequately funded through the 2014 budget to continue the maintenance and replacement work on the bridges. FRA chief executive officer, Neil Cook said the significant allocation was for the road works to continue the process of getting on top of the backlog to ensure our bridges here in Fiji are safe and fit for the purpose they are intended for. Highlighting a recent incident where a driver veered off the traffic lane of the Lomowai Bridge in Nadroga, Mr Cook said this serves as a timely reminder to truck and bus operators that weight and A family in Lajonia in Wailevu, Labasa, are still in shock after a fire razed their home to the ground Sunday morning. A family member, Praneel Naidu said the fire started from a rented flat. This is our family home and it costs about $150,000. We were three families living together and the tenant was on a separate flat, Mr Naidu said. We have lost everything, including the tenants flat; there were 20 rooms and it is completely gone. Mr Naidu said they managed to save some things with the help of neighbours, family and friends. The National Fire Authority is investigating the cause of the fire. The firefighters were able to extinguish the fire in the house and stopped it from spreading to the joinery shop, at the time of the fire incident. The families were at home but they managed to get out of their house without any injuries, chief executive officer John OConnor said.

FRA Continues Works On Bridges

other restrictions on bridges are not put in place without good cause. Restrictions are put in place on roads and bridges because those restrictions or limitations are necessary for the safety of the public, Mr Cook said. We urge all road users to adhere to all restrictions and limits placed on roads and bridges, including temporary speed restrictions at construction sites. The Lomawai Bridge can only carry a weight limit of 20 tons per vehicle that crosses the bridge; a measure put in place by the authority after it was discovered that it was in need of serious repair works. Despite the neglect that bridges and crossings in Fiji have faced over the years, we remain committed to have all repair works completed as scheduled, Mr Cook said.

Lawyers, Accountants Laundering Money: FIU Fijis Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) accountants, real estate agents for tax
is tightening anti-money laundering controls on non-financial institutions because of increasing number of money laundering cases involving lawyers, accountants and real estate agents. FIU director Razim Buksh says nonfinancial institutions have become increasingly viable targets for money laundering activity because there has not been much focus on them as opposed to tighter controls in place on traditional financial service providers. We have seen non-financial institutions sector being misused to assist in the laundering of funds, Buksh said. The FIU continues to receive reports on the abuse of the lawyers, evasion and money laundering. Funds from illicit and criminal activities need to be laundered so that it can be used by criminals and that they remain undetected and hidden from authorities. The non-financial institutions provide excellent opportunities to launder funds outside of the heavily regulated sectors. Given the high risks involved, the FIU is calling on the various business heads to be mindful and screen all clients including current clients before engaging them in any and/or further business transaction. The FIU has also taken steps to include the non-financial sector under the antimoney laundering framework.

10-Day Trip Around India For 5 Lucky Couples

Attracting and retaining the best international talent to fill skills shortages in key occupations is critical to Canadas economic success.
- Hon. Jason Kenney, P.C., M.P.
Minister of Employment and Social Development

Five lucky couples will soon be going to India on a 10-days fully-paid allinclusive trip thanks to Courts (Fiji) Limited. Courts representatives presented the tickets the winners of their 2013 Diwali Dhoom Dhadaka promotion at its Courts Mega branch in Samabula. The five couples together with their families will be enjoying India and visiting all sites, cultural tours which have been organised by Glacier Holiday Tours. Winners will be visiting Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, Udaipur, Pushkar, Vrindavan and Mathura. The winners were overjoyed with the win and said it would not have been possible if it was not for Courts. There were two winners from East, two from West and one from North. Courts (Fiji) director marketing, Anil Senewiratne, said they had very good response from their Diwali promotion this year. He said they had over 200,000 coupons

entering their promotion through the automatic electronic means. This meant that purchases at Courts got directly sent into the promotion as entries without having people to fill up the entry coupons physically. The number of electronic coupons increase was a testimony and proof of how well Courts promotions have been accepted by the people of Fiji, Mr Senewiratne said. More for Christmas With Diwali over, Courts is now looking to reward its customers in a bigger way this Christmas. This will be through their Courts Christmas Family Thrills on Wheels promotion. Courts chief operating officer Hamendra Prasad said customers can win brand new 44 Peugeot French SUV. All you have to do is just spend $25 or more for a chance to win, he said. Theres over $600,000 worth of prizes and giveaways.

Fiji Link Hits Skies In 2014

Fiji Airways has announced that its subsidiary airline, Pacific Sun, will be rebranded as Fiji Link in 2014, and unveiled the carriers new livery. Pacific Sun, Fijis main domestic and regional airline, is wholly owned by Fiji Airways, and the rebranding of the airline is the next step in the on-going restructure of the domestic airline group. Fiji Airways Managing Director and CEO Stefan Pichler said: As weve stated previously, Pacific Sun hasnt had a brand alignment with its commercial position since its inception. Following the rebranding of Fiji Airways, we made it a priority to create a new identity for our regional carrier. Fiji Link will fulfill its role as an extension of the Fiji Airways network, carrying our customers throughout Fiji and beyond within the Pacific. Importantly, it will deliver all the Fijian hospitality and warmth customers expect when visiting our region. An internal brand development process resulted in four design and naming options which were then to be voted on by the public and the staff of Pacific Sun and Fiji Airways. The new brand will be adopted in mid2014 after the arrival of Pacific Suns new ATR72 aircraft.

More Local Artisans Receive Fijian Crafted Licences

Shaheem Ali Ph: 778.709.2070

Email: shaheem.ali@2percentrealty.ca Web: www.shaheemali.ca

More of Fijis most gifted mat weavers, masi designers and other artisans have had their work officially recognised and authenticated with the Fijian Crafted brand. The latest group of 39 people received their licence certificates in Nadi from the Attorney General and Minister for Industry and Trade, Aiyaz SayedKhaiyum. The ceremony before the artisans, their families and a large crowd marked the end of the Western Crafts Fair in Koroivolu Park. The Fijian Crafted initiative is part of the on-going Fijian Made" campaign, which is designed to persuade Fijians to buy locally made products and keep the economic benefits in Fiji. The licence holders are entitled to display the Fijian Crafted logo when they sell their works to differentiate them from generic island style products imported from overseas. The Attorney General described the initiative as a celebration of indigenous arts and craft and the artisans who make them that is designed to ensure their continuity into the future and provide sustainable livelihoods for talented Fijians.

He said any international visitor to Fiji could now readily tell whether a particular item was authentic and a true representation of Fijian craftsmanship and culture. The AG urged local artisans not to compromise the authenticity, quality and attractiveness of their work and said top pieces were bound to attract top prices. He referred to a spike in commercial interest in local artisans since the Fijian Crafted program was launched in June. The AGs comments were endorsed by the President of the Fiji Crafts Council, Niqa Tuvuki, who told the gathering that the initiative had led to a surge in sales for those artisans who had been granted licences. She said the Motibhai Group had already bought $4000 worth of works, Tappoos was intending to establish a special Fijian Crafted section in its stores and the work of some of the existing licence holders was already being displayed in several of Fijis diplomatic missions overseas. The Crafts Council chief said the Governments program was deeply appreciated.

Fiji Unplaced, NZ Least Corrupt In Index

Fiji is unplaced in the Corruption Perceptions Index 2013 ranking which says New Zealand and Denmark are the least corrupt. The Index ranks countries by their perceived levels of corruption. The CPI ranks 176 countries on a scale from 100 (very clean) to 0 (highly corrupt), but Fiji is not in the survey because global watchdog Transparency International, which draws up the survey, did not have sufficient, credible sources available to them to rate Fiji. For a country to qualify to be in the survey there has to be at least three credible surveys. Fiji was last included in the CPI in 2005 where it was placed 55th out of the 165 surveyed. Meanwhile, in the Global Corruption Barometer 2013 (GCB) which was released in July by the Transparency International Secretariat in Berlin, Germany it outlined that majority of Fijians is willing to report or fight corruption. The 8th GCB covered 114,000 people in 107 countries including 1000 Fijians on views and experiences of corruption. 97 per cent of Fijians interviewed said ordinary people can make a difference in the fight against corruption. In addition, 99 per cent of Fijians said they were willing to get involved in the fight against corruption, while 97 per cent of people said they would report an incident of corruption. Commenting on that survey, head of Pacific Regional Work Glen Raynor said while most Pacific Island countries may not be listed on the CPI, "people in Pacific Islands are the most likely in the world to fight corruption." New Zealand and Denmark are tied for first place in the survey, with scores of 91 out of 100 in the latest ranking. Finland and Sweden were joint third and Norway and Singapore are joint fifth. Australia is in the ninth place. Papua New Guinea, the only Pacific Island country noted in the survey, ranks 144 alongside Iran, Nigeria, Cameroon, Ukraine and Central African Republic. Overall, Transparency International says while a handful performed well, none of the 177 countries covered in the index recorded a perfect score. The report further said that more than two-thirds scored less than 50, which it described as "disturbing". The rankings were put together after going through a four-stage process, using data from 12 different organisations that measure public sectors around the world. The organisations are the African Development Bank, the Bertelsmann Foundation, the Economist Intelligence Unit, Freedom House, Global Insight, International Institute for Management Development, Political and Economic Risk Consultancy, Political Risk Services, the World Economic Forum, the World Bank and the World Justice Project.

A church service was held at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital auditorium in Suva to launch the hospitals week-long 90th anniversary celebrations. According to the hospitals Medical Superintendent, Jemesa Tudravu, the celebration will showcase to the public how much it has grown over time. The public is the major stakeholder of the hospital and we want to show them the range and type of services that we now provide from the basics that we started with in 1923, Mr Tudravu said. He said the hospital stands to serve a population of 379,917 and employs more than 1200 people.

CWM Hospitals 90th Birthday

The hospital also serves as Fijis major teaching ground for doctors, nurses, paramedics, etc. The hospital will also be hosting public lectures during the celebration. An open day was also be part of the celebrations. Guest speakers were former senior staff of the hospital who shared their experiences and the history of the hospital. There were guided tours within the hospital showcasing our very high-tech and advanced equipments. The celebrations ended at Sukuna Park in Suva.

So it's the holidays, and you're responsible for the main dish. Don't worry; you're only five steps away from serving the perfect bird at your big feast. Read on to learn how to cook a turkey. Step 1: Thaw it. If using a frozen turkey, thaw in its original plastic wrapper in the fridge. Allow for five hours per pound, or per 500 g. Quicker method: Cover the turkey with cold water (the sink is a good place for this), and change with fresh cold water every 30 minutes; allow one hour per pound (500 g). Step 2: Season it. Prepare the turkey by removing giblets and neck. Rinse and wipe the cavity; sprinkle with salt and pepper or stuff lightly using skewers to

fasten skin over the cavity. Step 3: Roast it. Place turkey, breast side up, on rack in roasting pan. Brush with melted butter or oil. Tent loosely with foil. Roast in 325F (160C) oven for about 20 minutes per pound (500 g) or until juices run clear when turkey is pierced and when thermometer inserted into thickest part of thigh registers 180F (82C) for a stuffed turkey or 170F (77C) for an unstuffed turkey. Remove tent for last hour of roasting. Step 4: Cover and leave it. When turkey is done, transfer to warm platter. Tent with foil and let stand for 20 to 30 minutes. This allows time for juices at the surface of the bird to distribute evenly throughout the meat. Step 5: Carve turkey. Eat and enjoy!

The largest consumer class action in Australian history began in the Federal Court in Melbourne Monday as 38,000 ANZ customers appeal over the bank's fees. Maurice Blackburn is taking the action on behalf of ANZ customers, with the court set to examine whether the fees are fair or whether they are excessive and therefore illegal. A High Court decision last year paved the way for the trial in the Federal Court. Maurice Blackburn has the financial backing of publicly listed litigator IMF. Andrew Watson, the head of class actions at Maurice Blackburn, says the fees are not an accurate reflection of the costs faced by banks when customers are caught out. "The fees range, but $25 to $35 is the sort of range for fees that are imposed, so you might be a dollar over on your account or a day late in your payment and the banks will slug you with a fee that's out of all proportion to what it costs them for that minor transgression," he said. "We think its worth [in total] about $50 million, but overall we're running a case for 170,000 bank customers against eight major banks, and that's worth about $220 million." Mr Watson says this is the first of the cases to go to trial. "It's been a long, hard fight over the

ANZ Class Action: 38,000 Customers Take Bank To Federal Court Over Fees
last three-and-a-half years," he said. "We've been to the High Court and back, and now it's time for ANZ bank customers to have their day in court. "The fact that the banks have dropped some of their charges is a good thing and to be welcomed, but even then, some of those fees are still too high and are still the subject of this action." ANZ customers hope to win back overdue fees Fork lift driver Tim Hardman is one of the 38,000 people to sign up to the class action. The 34-year-old was an ANZ customer for six years, during which time he racked up more than $700 in fees. "Most of my bills were set up with direct debits, just the same as your wages go in as a direct credit," Mr Hardman said. "Yet the ANZ likes to process their withdrawals first, and then they like to process their deposits later in the day. "Quite often as much as I tried to line up my direct debit payments with when my pay goes in, there were a few times where it was only a matter of hours when my account would be overdrawn to pay a bill and then my wages goes in later that night, yet the ANZ likes to charge people overdrawn fees, or honour fees, as they like to call it." Mr Hardman says he is hoping to get most of his money back through the class action. "I feel it's unreasonable and unsubstantiated for banks that make billions and billions of dollars profit every year to then charge the average customer $30 a pop in some cases for a simple overdrawn amount which could only be overdrawn for two or three hours," he said. "Thousands of people are standing up together to say: 'Listen banks, this is just ridiculous'. Australians should be proud to say: 'This is enough'. "So if we all stand up and say this isn't right, then maybe we'll get something done." Bank fee challenge could have wide implications Dr Wayne Courtney from the University of Sydney law faculty has been monitoring the case since the High Court ruled last year that the bank fees are open to challenge. He says the court case has caught the attention of other large companies. "I know at the big end of town, some of these large institutions [are] quite worried about the effect it has on the certainty of contracts," he said. "If you say X company who provides power wants to charge, say, a $20 admin fee when the bill's paid late, I think that's created some concern at that end of town because they're now worried about whether they can justify those fees.

"So I think it has the potential, I suspect, to reform some sort of structuring of fees in consumer contracts generally." Dr Courtney says the outcome of the case could have an effect on the contracts of other companies. "For a long time, large institutions engaged very capable lawyers to draft around certain basic protections the law provided in respect of charging very large amounts of money when a consumer or some other party to the contract happened to breach the contract," he said. "What's really got people interested is together with these sort of High Court developments last year, plus this new legislation, it opens up a lot more of that sort of stuff for challenge. "And I think on one side you've probably got the consumers groups saying: 'Great, we're sick of being charged these ridiculous nice round number fees for no real reason'. "[Against that] some of these large institutions at the big end of town, they're quite worried about the effect that has on the certainty and predictability of their contracts." ANZ declined an interview request ahead of class action. The Australian Bankers Association said it was inappropriate for it to comment, because it has not been involved in the case.

Japanese Man Switched At Birth Wins Lawsuit Against Hospital After Life Of Poverty
A 60-year-old Japanese man switched at birth says he would like to "roll back the clock", days after winning a lawsuit against the hospital which mistakenly cast him into a life of poverty. The man, who has not been identified, told a packed Tokyo press conference that he was shell-shocked when he learned the truth, saying his life would have been starkly different. "I've wondered 'how on earth could this happen'? I couldn't believe it. To be honest, I didn't want to accept it," he said. "I might have had a different life. I want [the hospital] to roll back the clock to the day I was born." A Tokyo district court ordered the hospital to pay 38 million yen ($408,000) in damages over its 1953 blunder which saw the man switched with another baby boy who was delivered just 13 minutes later. It is not clear if the hospital, which has not commented on the bizarre case, will appeal. The man, an unmarried truck driver, would have grown up as the eldest of four brothers in a wealthy family where siblings enjoyed a lavish lifestyle including private tutors. Instead, he was raised on welfare by his non-biological mother who also supported older siblings after her husband passed away. The family had few frills in their oneroom apartment except for a radio, according to the man who studied at night school while working in a factory. "It was like she was born to experience hardship," the man said of the woman he knew as his mother. The man has been helping take care of his non-biological brothers, one of whom suffered a stroke. The decades-old mistake was uncovered when the wealthy family's three younger brothers had DNA testing done on their oldest sibling who looked nothing like them - after their parents died. They checked hospital records and confirmed the identity of their biological eldest brother last year, whom the men have since met. The four are now working on building a relationship to make up for lost time.

Baby Elephant Sanook Died Accidentally While Playing With Favourite Toy, Melbourne Zoo Says Sanook, the 11-month-old Asian elephants."
elephant calf that became one of Melbourne Zoo's most popular animals, has died after becoming entangled in a favourite toy. In a statement released, the zoo said CCTV footage revealed Sanook's death was the result of a tragic accident. "The CCTV footage shows that at 7pm while playing with the tire, Sanook managed to maneuver it in an unusual way that caused his head to become caught," Melbourne Zoo director Kevin Tanner said in the statement. "This placed pressure on his neck and would have prevented him from breathing. Preliminary post-mortem results confirm this as the cause of death." Pointing out that tires are "commonly used around the world in zoos as an approved form of enrichment for elephants", the statement said the toy was one of Sanook's favorites, as it had been for his sister Mali and brother Ongard. However, Mr Tanner added: "To our knowledge no such accident has taken place previously in any zoo with

He said the accident has left the zoo's keepers, vets and other staff devastated. Sanook lived up to his name Sanook's arrival was well-publicized, with more than 4,000 Victorians voting online to name the baby elephant, according to the Zoos Victoria website. Sanook, which means fun-loving and cheerful in Thai, was the overwhelming favourite, it said. "He is cheeky, confident and loves a bit of fun so I think Victorians have chosen his name well," Victoria's Minister for Environment and Climate Change, Ryan Smith, said at the time. Sanook, who would have turned one in January, was the third birth since the arrival of three young elephant cows from Thailand in November 2006, as part of a new Regional Cooperative Conservation Breeding Program for the endangered species. He weighed 131 kilograms at birth, grew quickly and remained "active and confident, just like his siblings", the website says. Sanook's death prompted a flood of condolence messages on social media.

'Agitated' Man Stabs Three People At A Melbourne Mosque

One person is dead and two others have been injured in a "horrific" stabbing at a mosque at Dallas, in Melbourne's northern suburbs. Police say a group of elderly men and women were meeting at the Broadmeadows Turkish Islamic Cultural Centre when a 22-year-old man tried to get inside. Detective Senior Sergeant Stuart Bailey, of Victoria Police, says he was in an agitated state. "Three people in that mosque tried to prevent him from entering. They are all in their 70s," he said. "The male has produced a knife and has stabbed all three of them." When a police sergeant arrived on the scene he was assaulted by the man. "Fortunately for police the critical incident response team (CIRT) were also nearby and attended. They

deployed capsicum spray which didn't stop the offender," Detective Senior Sergeant Bailey said. The man then ran off into the mosque carpark where he was tasered. It took six of the CIRT members and two uniform police officers to finally subdue the man. A Glenroy man in his 70s was killed in the attack. Two others were injured. Both are in a stable condition. The suspect was also taken to hospital. Police say the man had been at the mosque the previous day. Detective Senior Sergeant Bailey says there were a large number of witnesses and police are trying find out what prompted the attack. "It's an horrific attack on three elderly gentlemen just trying to go about their normal business at the mosque," he said.

Police say speed played a role in the one-car crash that killed The Fast and the Furious actor Paul Walker in California. Walker, 40, was a passenger in the red Porsche that crashed into a utility pole and burst into flames in the city of Santa Clarita last Saturday (local time). He had been in the city attending an event for his charity to raise money for people affected by Typhoon Haiyan, which hit the Philippines last month. "Speed was a factor in the solo vehicle collision," the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said in a statement. Deputy Mark Pope says the accident is under investigation and he does not know how fast the car was going. The Los Angeles Times has identified the driver as Walker's friend Roger Rodas, 38, who owned Always Evolving, an auto dealership and racing services company. The sheriff's department would not confirm that, and Always Evolving could not be reached for comment. The company has posted a message on its Facebook page saying: "Thank you

all for your condolences and prayers while we mourn the loss of our loved ones." Walker's career began on the small screen, with roles in shows including The Young and the Restless and Touched by an Angel. He rose to fame after starring in the 1999 hit film Varsity Blues, but is best known for starring as undercover agent Brian O'Conner in a string of the Fast and Furious movies. He appeared in all but one of the six movies in the series as one of the leading protagonists, along with Vin Diesel and Michelle Rodriguez. Filming was still ongoing for the latest film in the series, Fast & Furious 7, which was expected to hit cinemas late in 2014. Media site Gulf News last month reported Walker and other actors were due to film scenes of the movie in Abu Dhabi in January. His other film credits include Pleasantville, Into the Blue, She's All That and Takers. He is survived by his teenage daughter Meadow.

In a first, an Indian-origin doctor in the US has performed a unique "lifesaving" heart procedure - that involves injecting the patient's own stem cells into the organ - on Hollywood actor Ernie Lively. Amit Patel from the University of Utah performed the historic procedure on Lively - 'Gossip girl' actress Blake Lively's father - using new technique of retrograde gene therapy on a human heart to repair damaged muscle and arteries. The 66-year-old actor has credentials that include a long list of TV and film appearances, including Passenger 57 and the Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants. He had suffered a massive heart attack in 2003, which left him functioning on half a healthy heart. As time

marched on, his ejection fraction the measurement of the percentage of blood leaving the heart each time it contracts - continued to decline. Lively connected with Patel, director of Clinical Regenerative Medicine and Tissue Engineering and an associate professor in the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the University of Utah School of Medicine. Lively became a patient of Patel's in February, when Patel saved Lively's life after a complication with an angiogram left the actor with a severed aorta and problems with his coronary arteries. This month, Lively got his wish when he became the first patient in the world to undergo retrograde gene therapy at University of Utah Hospital, a novel procedure designed to deliver stem cells to the heart to repair damaged muscle and arteries in the most minimally invasive way possible. Patel started investigating cell and gene-based therapies for the treatment of heart disease 12 years ago, but only recently received FDA approval to try the therapy on Lively. The first successful procedure was performed on Lively on November 7. "It's incredible. Imagine having a heart procedure that can potentially regenerate or rejuvenate your heart muscle -- and it's done as an outpatient procedure," said Patel. Patel uses a minimally invasive technique where he goes backwards through a patient's main cardiac vein, or coronary sinus, and inserts a catheter. He then inflates a balloon in order to

block blood flow out of the heart so that a very high dose of gene therapy can be infused directly into the heart. The unique gene therapy doesn't involve viruses (a rarity for gene therapy, Patel notes) and is pure human DNA infused into patients. The DNA, called SDF-1, is a naturally occurring substance in the body that becomes a homing signal for a patient's body to use its own stem cells to go to the site of an injury. Once the gene therapy is injected, the genes act as "homing beacons." When the genes are put into patients with heart failure, they marinate the entire heart and act like a look out, he said. "I woke up this morning and told my wife, 'I haven't felt this good in years," said Lively after returned home where he is recovering.

Beatle John Lennon's School Indian Magazine Editor Arrested Detention Files Sell For $15,000 Each In Sexual Assault Case: Police
Detention records describing Beatle John Lennon's schoolboy misdemeanours have fetched about $15,000 each in an online auction. The two documents, from 195556, outline the wrongdoings of a 15-year-old Lennon during his time at Quarry Bank High School for Boys at Liverpool in north-west England. Within the files, teachers describe Lennon as a "class-clown" and a "nuisance" who showed "just no interest whatsoever". He was punished for "shoving" and "fighting" in class, as well as "sabotage". On two occasions, the Beatle accumulated three detentions in the space of a single day. The files relate to when Lennon was in Class 3B and Class 4C, from 19 May to 23 June 1955 and 25 November 1955 to 13 February 1956, respectively. One year later in 1957, Lennon met Paul McCartney and they went on to form the Beatles. Their first hit was in late 1962, with the song Love Me Do. The records were rescued by a teacher who had been asked to burn the contents of a storage room at the school in the 1970s. The BBC reports that the teacher tore the sheets from a book to retain as a keepsake, after he noticed the name "Lennon" atop some of the pages. The teacher gave away some sheets and others were destroyed, but these two pages have survived. Lennon's close school friend Pete Shotton, who wrote a book about the star's life, authenticated the documents. Each document sold for 8,437 pounds ($15,000) in the auction held by TracksAuction.com, a firm based in north-west England.

Indian magazine editor Tarun Tejpal top Indian news magazine editor has been arrested in the state of Goa over accusations he sexually assaulted a young female employee, police said. Tarun Tejpal, the 50-year-old founder of investigative news magaine Tehelka, was taken into custody by police at the crime branch office in Goa's state capital of Panaji. "Mr Tejpal has been arrested," a police officer investigating the case told reporters on condition of anonymity, adding he was likely to be produced before a magistrate last Sunday. A crime branch official and other leading media outlets also said Mr Tejpal had been detained. Earlier in the day, a district court turned down a bail plea that Mr Tejpal moved apprehending arrest. His lawyer Geeta Luthra said her client would not immediately challenge the court order denying the journalist bail. "We are not appealing against the order. Our client is cooperating with the police in the investigations," she told reporters outside the court. Ahead of his court plea, Mr Tejpal was questioned by Indian police over allegations that he sexually assaulted a journalist working for Tehelka in a hotel elevator in Goa during a magazinesponsored event earlier this month. "We have joined the investigation started by the (police) crime branch. We will continue to do so," Mr Tejpal said. Tehelka is an investigative magazine responsible for some of India's hardesthitting journalism about abuses of power, corruption and violence against women. The magazine has reported forcefully on gender inequality in India recently, highlighting police and judicial insensitivity to rape victims as well as the misogynistic attitudes of many Indian men. The publication has since been accused of hypocrisy and trying to cover up a serious crime after staff were sent an email last week saying Mr Tejpal was stepping down for six months for "misconduct". Mr Tejpal, also a famed novelist, has denied the sexual assault allegations. The alleged victim, who quit her job at the magazine after the scandal broke, said in a statement Friday she was fighting to preserve her integrity. Mr Tejpal, who initially apologised for what he called "a bad lapse of judgement", later termed the incidents "consensual" and "fleeting". Under a new rape law passed by parliament following the rape and murder of a woman on a New Delhi bus last year, Mr Tejpal could be jailed for 10 years if found guilty, lawyers say.

It was decided by everyone that the groomsman Ruan should pay the newlywed couple 20,000 yuan, to which he replied that he wasn't the one who had done something wrong and that he didn't have any money. The couple later took the matter to police, but a county-level court ruled that the groomsman was not guilty of rape.

Asparagus is a member of the lily family which includes leeks, garlic and onions. It has a spear top with bud-like, compact and pointed head. Perhaps it may surprise you that there are a few hundred varieties of asparagus but only a small number is edible. Although it's available all year round, asparagus usually is most found and best in spring and is harvested when it is about 6 to 8 inches tall. The variety we eat is usually green or greenish purple in color. There is also a white variety which is grown underground to preserve its delicate flavor. But these sunlight-deprived stalks also lack the goodness of chlorophyll. Asparagus is expensive compared to other more common vegetables simply because it is harvested by hand. Nutritional Benefits Asparagus is an alkaline food which is rich in protein but low in calories and carbohydrates. It is an excellent source of potassium, folic acid, vitamins A, C and K, and traces of vitamin B complex. A good source of dietary fiber, asparagus

Mistakes You Make While Running

Here are some running mistakes you probably didn't know you make
which can cause you pain. 2. Inward knee collapse Many people often face the problem of knees, which collapse inward when they run. This is caused by weak gluteus muscles. Remember, when you run, your knees are supposed to stay in line with your hips. However, if your hip muscles are weak and don't support your body weight, the weight will go to your knees and cause them to bow inward. To rectify this, you need to do exercises to build up the posterior gluteus medius and the gluteus maximus two key muscles in your butt. 3. Running on your fore-foot although you're a rear-foot runner Are you a rear-foot runner or a fore-front runner? Rear-foot runners strike down harder on the rear part of the feet, while forefoot runners strike down harder on the front part of their feet. While neither running style is better than the other, the impact forces may be different between the two running styles. Rear-foot runners usually tend to have a higher amount of force exerted on their feet when they run as compared to forefoot runners. The problem with forefoot running sometimes is that many people don't have strong enough feet to support their weight. So if you're planning to change to forefoot or barefoot running, make the progression gradually so that you can increase the strength of your foot. 4. Over-swinging Do you swing your arms wildly when

When you run, it's obvious that you can't see yourself. Unless, of course, you're running next to a full length mirror. Therefore, it becomes difficult to see if your posture is correct. Have you suddenly started getting back pain? Are you running correctly? Here are five of the most common issues runners patients face... 1. Asymmetrical running pattern This means landing harder on one side of the body than the other and is one of the first things you need to recognise. Listen to the sound of your running. Airplane Seat Sizes Reduced By Three Centimetres

Old standard used to be 46 centimetres across If you plan on catching a flight to hang out with your relatives over the holidays, prepare to scrunch! Seats on airplanes are getting smaller. The old standard used to be a comfy 46 centimetres across, but the latest batch of Boeing 777s now uses 43cm seats. A 3 centimetre difference might not sound like much, but it allows airlines to squeeze an extra seat into each row, which means they can stuff dozens more passengers onto every plane. Its just the way the economics in the industry work, Brad Davies with Virtually There Travel tells the media. Once the plane takes off, there is no advantage to having empty seats. With that in mind, theyve reconfigured aircraft to accommodate as many people as they possibly can. Davies says this means comfort will come with a price for travellers. Theyll be having a bargain basement seat, and they have different names for it, like slim line or economy seats, he explains. Theyll also have the opportunity to sell you for a few dollars now to sit in the emergency row or in business class. He says having more seats on a plane could also lead to lower fares.

Wireless Code Gives Customers New Rights

New caps on excess data and roaming fees are now in effect
Cellphone customers will get caps on their excess data and roaming fees and other new rights starting December 2, under the CRTC's new Wireless Code of Conduct. The code, which will apply to all new contracts signed starting Monday and to all contracts by June 3, 2015, allows customers to cancel contracts at no cost after a maximum of two years. It will allow individual or small business wireless customers to: Cancel a new contract and return the phone at no cost (provided customers stay within usage limits) within 15 days if they are unhappy with the service. Refuse changes to key terms and conditions of their contract, including changes to services and prices for those services, for the duration of their contract. Get a plain language summary of their services, including information on when and why they may be charged extra. Receive a notification when they are roaming in a different country, with rates for voice services, text messages and data usage. Cap excess data charges above their plan limits to $50 a month. Cap roaming fees at $100 a month. Get their phone unlocked after 90 days if it was discounted in exchange for a fixed-term contract or immediately if the device was paid for in full. Have service suspended at no cost if the phone is lost or stolen. Pay no extra charges for a service described as unlimited. The code also limits cancellation fees less than two years into the contract: For customers who received a discount on their device from their carrier in exchange for a fixed contract, the maximum cancellation fee is the value of the discount, and the cancellation fee should be reduced an equal amount for every month of their contract they have already completed. For those who did not receive a subsidized device, the maximum is $50 or 10 per cent of the minimum monthly charge for the remaining months of the contract. The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission has launched a cancellation fee calculator on its website to help customers figure out allowable cancellation costs for their circumstances. Customers concerned about whether their carrier is abiding by the wireless code should first try to resolve the issue with their wireless provider, the CRTC says. If that doesn't work, they can complain to the Commissioner for Complaints for Telecommunications Services. Higher prices possible During a live online chat with CRTC chair Jean-Pierre Blais, organized by the CRTC Monday, some participants expressed concern that wireless providers were hiking prices to compensate for the fact that three-year contracts are no longer allowed. Blais responded that the CRTC believes that letting customers renegotiate their contract at least every two years will have a positive effect on competition. In the past, consumer advocates and smaller wireless carriers had argued that competition was being stifled because many customers were locked into three-year contracts and faced huge cancellation fees if they broke those contracts to switch to another carrier. A group of carriers is appealing part of the wireless code, but the CRTC says the entire code will nevertheless apply to consumers for now. Rogers, Bell, Telus, SaskTel, Manitoba Telecom Services and other carriers are challenging the application of the code to all contracts by June 3, 2015. At that time, there will still exist some three-year contracts, signed by customers in exchange for a discounted device before December 2, when the code officially went into effect. Customers in those contracts would be free to cancel their contracts on June 3, 2015, even though the subsidy on their devices wouldn't be paid off in full, the carriers argue, leaving the wireless companies on the hook for the remaining balance. The Federal Court of Appeal has agreed to hear the challenge.

The Bank of Canada is not expected to move interest rates higher or lower when it announces its trend-setting rate. But economists say central bank governor Stephen Poloz could say something that affects the value of the Canadian dollar. The loonie has been drifting lower for days, dropping to below 94 cents this week. At least one analyst, Bank of Montreal chief economist Doug Porter, says Poloz may issue a statement that suggests the weakness of the currency is not unwelcome. The banks policy rate has stood at one per cent since September 2010. Canadians can expect modest increases in food prices next year, but prices for staples like cheese, eggs, milk and frozen vegetables may decrease, a new report says. The annual Food Price Index report from the University of Guelph in Ontario predicts food prices will rise between 0.3% and 2.6%. The prices are being kept under control because of new competition in food retailing such as Target entering the Canadian market and selling groceries

which has led to a price war, researcher Sylvain Charlebois said in a release about the index. For 2013, "we actually underestimated the impact of the competition in the market," he said. Fish and seafood prices are expected to increase the most, between 3% and 5%, as consumers and retailers press fisheries to adopt sustainable practices. Charlebois said consumers will likely see higher prices for healthier and ethical products because of higher demand.

A woman who so severely neglected and starved her grandson that he wasted away and died in her care began testimony at a coroner's inquest Wednesday by denying she was responsible for his death. When Jeffrey Baldwin died in 2002 at age five, he had withered away to the weight of a baby, unable to lift his own head, the inquest has heard. His grandmother, Elva Bottineau, who had custody of Jeffrey and his three siblings, kept the boy and one of his sisters in a cold, fetid room, where they slept among their own waste. Before Bottineau began her testimony, coroner's counsel Jill Witkin reminded her that she was not allowed to undermine the findings of fact the courts made in convicting her of second-degree murder. Jeffrey was chronically starved and he died because Bottineau failed to give him the necessary food and medical treatment, Witkin said. "I disagree," said Bottineau, shaking her head. The short, stout woman with long grey hair dyed maroon and wearing a flowery T-shirt was brought from Grand Valley Institution for Women in Kitchener, Ont., for her testimony, which is expected to last two days. Bottineau requested standing about halfway through the inquest, which began in September, and coroner Peter Clark ruled that standing must be given to anyone with a "direct and substantial interest" in an inquest. Her testimony will be restricted so that she cannot try to reargue her conviction, though some of the lawyers involved in the inquest have questioned whether, with an IQ of 69, she will be able to follow instructions. A lawyer for Jeffrey's surviving siblings read a statement from them Wednesday, saying they are doing

well since being removed from the "horrors" of Bottineau's house and now have loving, supportive foster parents. They have grown up in separate homes but have regular contact, often having dinner at each other's homes and going on an annual camping trip, said lawyer Freya Kristjanson. "Despite their horrific early upbringing, the children have all made tremendous gains and are getting on with their lives," she said. "The siblings will always be impacted by their experiences. However, their resiliency is truly inspiring." The eldest sister is now in university, the sister who shared a room with Jeffrey and much of the same neglect and mistreatment is a "kind, gentle and courageous" girl in high school hoping to go to college and Jeffrey's younger brother is a "bright, humours and strong-willed," boy who also dreams

of going to college, Kristjanson said. Bottineau wept on the stand as she recalled her own troubled upbringing and how her mother and stepfather forced her to drop out of school in Grade 9 to help care for some of her 15 siblings. Both Bottineau and her partner Norman Kidman had previous convictions for child abuse when they were granted custody of Jeffrey and three siblings something the Catholic Children's Aid Society only discovered in its files after Jeffrey's death. The family's caseworker has testified that she had no concerns about Bottineau, who she thought was a reliable pillar of support when compared to Jeffrey's often-volatile teenage parents, so she never conducted any records checks on her or Kidman. Had those checks been done, workers

would have found a disturbing history of child abuse. After Bottineau's first baby died of pneumonia in 1969 doctors found multiple untreated fractures and she was convicted of assault causing bodily harm. Two different psychological evaluations cast major doubts on Bottineau's ability to care for children. Bottineau then had two more children, who were made Crown wards following a severe beating by Kidman that landed them in hospital. He was convicted of two counts of assault causing bodily harm. Those two children later alleged horrific abuse and neglect, including being tied to their beds and locked in dog crates. After those two kids were removed from the home, the Catholic Children's Aid Society supervised Bottineau's care of her and Kidman's three daughters for a time. There were records of abuse investigations in the following years, including allegations made about some children Bottineau cared for as a foster "day mom." Meanwhile, city of Toronto workers planned Wednesday to replace a tree planted in Jeffrey's memory in Greenwood Park that was recently vandalized. A bench that was part of the memorial for Jeffrey was also to be returned to the park after being refurbished. The CCAS has implemented many changes since Jeffrey's death, including various iterations of record-keeping systems, but a CCAS manager has testified that gaps still remain. The coroner's inquest is not looking to assign blame, but rather is exploring systemic issues surrounding Jeffrey's death. The jury can make recommendations aimed at preventing such situations in the future.

The organization will provide a bank of phone numbers with voicemail to agencies that work with homeless and unemployed people. Users will be able to check their messages from any phone. Consumers Push More Than Cosmetic Changes To Chemical Makeup Of Toiletries

An environmental group has ranked Canadas five largest cosmetics companies based on potentially harmful ingredients in their products. The report from Toronto-based Environmental Defence says the big five all have issues with chemicals that could be harmful to human health, but some are doing better than others. And it says public pressure is beginning to exert influence on the ingredients companies use in everything from shampoo and moisturizers to toothpaste and deodorant. Citing publicly available information and using a basket of five common products, Environmental Defence looked for what it called the toxic 10 10 chemicals that have faced international scrutiny for their proven or potential health hazards. The study ranked Proctor and Gamble best among Canadas big five cosmetics companies, followed by Johnson and Johnson, and Unilever. Estee Lauder and LOreal rounded out fourth and fifth place, respectively, principally because they did not publicly post policies on eliminating toxins such as triclosan and phthalates from their products. The good news is that some companies are listening to the growing concerns from their customers about the risks of these chemicals, Maggie MacDonald of Environmental Defence said in a release. Others need to take the old saying to heart the customer is always right and act to remove harmful chemicals. Procter and Gamble announced in September that it would eliminate triclosan, a commonly used antibacterial agent, and phthalates from its personal-care products in 2014. Johnson and Johnson committed in 2012 to remove triclosan, phthalates, formaldehydes and parabens from its adult toiletries and cosmetics. Wal-Mart Stores, meanwhile, announced this fall that it would be working toward reducing chemicals starting in January, and promises a public report in two years on how it has fared. Health Canada and Environment Canada proposed in 2012 that industry should voluntarily cut the amount of triclosan it uses, particularly in personal-care products that tend to get rinsed away into lakes and rivers. A Health Canada study found triclosan is harmful to the environment, but safe for humans. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is currently reviewing the safety of triclosan, with a report expected imminently. Concerns have been raised that the widespread use of triclosan may be triggering hormonal changes, or causing anti-microbial resistance that could lead to super bugs. Phthalates are a family of chemicals commonly used as plasticizers, used to help make plastics flexible. They also help make soaps, cleansers and perfume adhere to skin and are commonly found in synthetic fragrances. Studies suggest that when ingested, phthalates could cause reproductive and developmental abnormalities in young children.

Tim Hortons Boss Accused Of Cheating Filipino Workers For OT

MLA Mabel Elmore, who has met with Kibanoff and Pepito, says their story is all too common among foreign workers in Canada. "They are dependent on their employers. They often don't know their rights," Elmore said. "They are reluctant to raise concerns because they don't want to lose their jobs and be sent back, and I understand that was a very consistent threat against these workers." Kibanoff left her job at Tim Hortons in June, but said she's still haunted by the painful memories. "It feels like even if I'm not working there anymore he can still try to threaten us through other people that he knows," she told CBC News. Pepito also quit, and filed a complaint with the B.C. Employment Standards Branch. The couple said that, since then, they've been harassed and intimidated, and that their friends who still work under Pelletier have asked them to withdraw the complaint. Head office investigating When reached by phone Wednesday, both Pelletier and his wife said this was the first they had heard of the allegations. However, documents obtained by CBC News show an internal investigation into Pelletier is already underway at the head office of Tim Hortons. "This matter has been brought to our Two former employees of a Tim Hortons in small-town British Columbia say their employer took advantage of their status as temporary foreign workers to cheat them out of overtime pay, and to pressure them to keep quiet about it. Heidi Kibanoff and her boyfriend, Richard Pepito, say Pierre Pelletier hired them and other Filipinos under Canada's Temporary Foreign Worker Program to work at the Tim Hortons in Fernie, where they often put in long hours. The pair allege that Pelletier often made sure that the overtime that was paid came back to him in cash. "He will issue a cheque to us and then what he wants is you cash the cheque, and after you cash the cheque you give the money back to him," Pepito said. Kibanoff told CBC News about how, on pay day, Pelletier would drive her and other employees to the bank and waited while they cashed their attention. We are treating it seriously and are currently conducting a review in full cooperation with B.C. Employment Standards," Tim Hortons's corporate office said in a written statement. Pelletier is also accused of charging employees the processing fees for renewing their temporary work permits. According to regulations, the employer is responsible for paying those fees. The B.C. Employments Standards Branch said the investigation is ongoing. A hearing date has been set for February, which won't come soon enough for Kibanoff and Pepito. "It's not even the money anymore," Kibanoff said. "We don't even care about that, but I think that it's more than a strong case than what we're emotionally dealing right now. Like, it makes us feel unhealthy, stressed, exhausted, depressed."

Compact-to-mid-size crossover vehicles like the Chevrolet Equinox have, in a lot of ways, become the family sedans of today. That's because tey offer up more of what matters to parents and familieslike plenty of flexible seating and cargo space, plus impressive maneuverability and reasonably good fuel efficiency. Among them, the 2014 Chevrolet Equinox is one of the better picks; whether purposed for carpool duty, weekend family getaways, or commuting and errands, it's fully up for such versatile usewith an affordable price, a spacious interior, plenty of safety and tech features, and more refinement than you might expect. With crisp, somewhat sporty styling, and proportions that line up partway between Chevy's trucks and cars, the Equinox looks like it should: handsome but inoffensive. Inside, the look is a little jazzier, with vents flanking the radio and climate controls and more of the look that Chevrolet cars have recently been given. Our recommendation for most Equinox shoppers remains the fuel-efficient (and lower cost) four-cylinder models. With 182 horsepower, the 2.4-liter four idles smoothly, albeit with a somewhat clattery direct-injection sound, and once underway it's agreeable and unobtrusive. The combination comes with a stellar 32-mpg highway rating, too. The Equinox doesn't track as confidently on the highway as we'd like, but this is first and foremost a family vehicle. Yes, the 3.6-liter V-6 is strong and smooth, but it's also far thirstier in real-world driving -- and frankly more than most cost-conscious moms and dads are going to need. The 2014 Chevy Equinox feels designed for the ins and outs of family use, from the seating layout to the up-close details. There's an excellent carlike driving position, while the cross-stitched dual-tone perforated leather in top LTZ models feels quite luxurious. Back seats have enough space for two adults to sprawl out into, with decent legroom, and the seatbacks are adjustable for rake. And there's space for smaller items, weekend finds, and grocery bags between the two deep cargo wells in back, the deep center console, the retractable cargo cover, and stretchy net. The Equinox has been a consistent top performer in crash-tests and safety ratings. It hasn't yet been tested in the new Insurance Institute for Highway Safety small overlap frontal test, but it's been named an IIHS Top Safety Pick and it's earned top four- and five-star results from the federal government. Four-wheel disc brakes. StabiliTrak electronic stability control, head-curtain side airbags, and pelvic/ thorax seat-mounted bags are all included as standard equipment in the Equinox, a rearview camera system is offered in most models, and lane departure warning and forward collision warning alert systems are standard in the LTZ and optional on the LT. Unfortunately neither of those systems completely makes up for one Equinox inadequacy: The thick rear pillar can make outward visibility challenging. Considering its very affordable pricing, the 2014 Chevrolet Equinox has a very impressive set of the features that matter to price-conscious parents. There's a solid, effective set of connectivity and infotainment features, plenty of traditional convenience features thrown in, and even some optional high-tech active-safety features if you're willing to add a little to the bill. GM includes a touch-screen audio system with a USB port across most of the lineup, and the voiceactivated, touch-screen-based MyLink Connectivity system is an option. The MyLink package includes smartphone connectivity, integrated Pandora and Stitcher app compatibility, and handsfree controls. For 2014, the Equinox LTZ model gets new chrome-clad wheels, while there are a couple of new exterior colors for the lineup.

Canadian residents may also be asked to help the criminal justice system by sitting on a jury. To sit on a jury, you must be a resident of the province where the court case is being heard and also be at least 18 years of age. Rules about juries vary among provinces and territories. Human rights Canadian citizens and residents have rights It is important for you to learn about your rights and duties in Canada. You should also know how important

the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms is to what we believe and how we live in this country. The Charter protects your rights The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms is part of Canadas Constitution and protects you from the moment you arrive in Canada. It sets out the values that Canadians live by and describes the kinds of personal human rights and freedoms we can expect in this country. Some of those rights and freedoms include: The right to life, liberty and personal security Freedom of conscience and religion Freedom of thought, belief, opinion and expression, including freedom of the press and other media Freedom to hold peaceful meetings Freedom to join groups Protection from unreasonable search or seizure and unjustified detainment and imprisonment The right to be presumed innocent until proven guilty The right to retain and instruct counsel (a lawyer) without delay The right to a fair trial, through due process of law

The right to equal protection and benefit under the law, without discrimination Rights come with responsibilities People who live in Canada are expected to understand and obey Canadian laws, allow other Canadians to enjoy their rights and freedoms and help preserve Canada's multicultural heritage. It is also important for Canadians to become informed about politics and help to improve their communities and the country. Citizens of Canada have other rights and freedoms, such as the right to vote in elections. To learn about these rights, see the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Rights for all Canada does not tolerate abuse In Canada, abuse is a very serious offence. Violence toward any person man, woman or childis against the law. In serious cases of abuse, officials may take away children in danger or help a spouse or sick or elderly person who is in danger. Women have rights In Canada, men and women are equal. The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms states that they have the same rights. Discrimination against womenwhich includes unjust treatmentand violence toward women are both against the law. Welcome Back was touted to be the comeback film of the evergreen on screen couple Amitabh and Rekha. However, Anees Bazmee recently revealed that both the actors have been replaced by Dimple Kapadia and Naseeruddin Shah. Revealing about Dimple's role, the director stated that this will be her first attempt at comedy and she will be playing the role of a rich and glamorous

lady where she will be sharing the screen space with Nana Patekar and Anil Kapoor in the first half and with Naseer in the second. Naseer has supposedly replaced the late Feroz Khan from the prequel who played the don RDX in the film. Welcome Back will star John Abraham and Shruti Haasan in the lead and the second schedule of the film is slated to go on floors in Dubai this month.

The makers of "Table No.21", a taut thriller that came out last year and impressed the critics, are planning to come up with a sequel to the film. Producer Vicky Rajani, who had produced "Table No.21", confirmed the report. "Yes, talks are on and the idea has been thrown up to make a sequel. It will be basically based on games, but it will

not be a continuation of the original story. It will be altogether a different story," Rajani said. Rajeev Khandelwal, Tena Desae and Paresh Rawal formed the cast of the original. However, the maker will only repeat Paresh in the next instalment. Rajani said: "The film will see a new cast, but I feel Paresh Rawal will be part of it.

Javed Jaffrey, whose name is synonymous with comedy, will next be seen in Mr Joe B Carvalho starring Arshad Warsi and Soha Ali Khan. The actor is playing the character of Carlos, and will be seen in a quirky avatar every time he comes onscreen. Thats not all, we hear that Javed had to sit for almost four to five hours, only to get his make-up done. Some of his looks in the film are that of an Afro man, a blonde woman, a sadhu baba and a Maharashtrian woman.

Director Samir Tewari said, Javed Sirs characters are a treat to watch. I remember when we were shooting for his sequences, he would take almost four to five hours for his makeup, and once he was ready he would be in character till the shoot came to an end. For example, when we shot the Maharashtrian maid look, Javed Sir spoke to everyone on the set in Marathi with a scary deep baritone, even when he was off camera, which was quite hilarious. It was surely a pleasure to direct Javed bhai.

The Bollywood has come of age and newer things have been introduced. This piece does not intend to be a feminist piece of writing that talks about the lows of being a heroine in Hindi cinema, but a pat on the back of the most commercially viable actress of today, Deepika Padukone, for following the typical Bollywood route to success yet emerging as a 'hero' at the end. It all started with a big bang called 'Om Shanti Om', Deepika beamed her way to stardom opposite Shah Rukh Khan in her debut film. The rest as they say is history. And the year 2013 has been witness to the way things have turned around for her. The actress did four films this year and got a 100% success

rate with all the films getting an easy entry into the Rs. 100 crore club. While many would say the success ' Race 2' tasted could be also credited to the rest of the actors in the mutli-starrer, but soon Deepika silenced her critics with a confident performance in 'Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani'. Her onscreen pairing with ex-flame Ranbir Kapoor worked wonders for the producers and generated a mass interest, something that only a few films have amassed. Dippy's winning streak continued with 'Chennai Express' that hit a double century at the box-office. And like it started, the year ended on a high note for her with Sanjay Leela Bhansali's'Goliyon Ki Raasleela RamLeela' generating a similar response.

What went wrong between the ideal couple of tinselville, Hrithik Roshan and Suzanne Roshan still remains suspense for all but it is almost confirmed that Hrithik is no longer present in Suzannes life. The couple has called it a quit to their 13 year long happy married life. Hrithik and Suzzanne are blessed with two sons, Hridhaan and Hrehaan. The crack in their paradise came in to public glare during Rakesh Roshans last birthday but their marriage was going through a rough patch even before it. The couple is said to be living separately for four months. Off late, it was heard that hunk will move to a new abode and Suzanne will live with the Roshans. Suzanne and Hrithik were not spotted

together for a long time. She did not stand beside Hrithik when Krrish 3 made a grand success and when the superhero left for the US for treatment to cure headache, Suzanne was absent from the entire picture. In fact, a close friend of the hunk accompanied him to the US, informed by Rakesh Roshan. Whats most striking is that the 39-yearold actor will not present at the launch of his wifes luxury concept boutique while close pals of Suzanne insists her to postpone the launch for Hrithik to come back from the US. News is also doing the rounds that the couple is planning to legally end their relationship. They have filed for divorce. Well, we hope the couple sort out their differences and get together.

Best Roast Leg Of Lamb

Tropical White Christmas Cake

Exotic dried fruit makes this even more colourful than a traditional fruitcake. Ingredients 2cups sweetened shredded coconut 1-1/2 cups chopped dried papayas 1-1/2 cups chopped dried mangoes 1-1/2 cups coarsely chopped candied pineapple 1 cup golden raisins 1 cup halved red glazed berries 1 cup coconut rum 2 cups all-purpose flour 2 tsp baking powder 1/2 tsp salt 1/2 cup butter, softened 1 cup granulated sugar 3 eggs 2 cups slivered almonds 1 tbsp corn syrup 12 oz almond paste Icing: 1/4 cup butter, softened 1-1/4 cups icing sugar 2 tbsp whipping cream 1/2 tsp vanilla Preparation In large bowl, combine coconut, papayas, mangoes, pineapple, raisins, cherries and 1/2 cup of the rum; cover and let stand for 1 day, stirring occasionally. Sprinkle with 1/2 cup of the flour; stir just until combined. Set aside. Line two 8- x 4-inch loaf pans with parchment paper; set aside. In bowl, whisk together remaining flour, baking powder and salt. In separate large bowl, beat butter with sugar until light; beat in eggs, 1 at a time. Stir in flour mixture just until incorporated, then fruit mixture and almonds. Scrape into prepared pans, smoothing tops. Set shallow pan on bottom rack of oven; pour in enough water to come halfway up side. Bake cakes in centre of 250F (120C) oven, shielding with foil if beginning to crack, until cake tester inserted in centre comes out clean, 2-1/4 to 2-1/2 hours. Let cool in pans on rack. Remove cakes from pan; peel off parchment. Soak 2 double thicknesses of 16-inch square cheesecloth in remaining rum. Wrap cakes in cheesecloth, then plastic wrap, then foil. Refrigerate for at least 1 month or for up to 3 months. Icing: In bowl, beat butter until light. Beat in icing sugar, cream and vanilla. Brush tops of cakes with corn syrup. On icing sugar-dusted work surface, roll out almond paste to two 9- x 5-inch rectangles. Press on top of each cake. Spread with icing. Cover cakes loosely with plastic wrap and refrigerate in airtight container until cold and firm, about 1 day.

Ingredients 1 bulb garlic, 3 cloves peeled and crushed, the others left whole 1 small bunch fresh rosemary, half the leaves removed and coarsely chopped, half in sprigs zest of 1 lemon olive oil 2 kg quality leg of lamb sea salt freshly ground black pepper 1.5 kg potatoes, peeled and cut in half For the mint sauce 4 tablespoons chopped fresh mint leaves 1 teaspoon sugar 2 pinches salt 1 tablespoon hot water 3 tablespoons wine vinegar Method Preheat the oven to 200C/400C/ gas and place a roasting dish for the potatoes on the bottom. Mix the crushed garlic, chopped

rosemary, lemon zest and olive oil together. Season the lamb with salt and pepper and rub the marinade into it. Place on the hot bars of the oven above the tray. Boil the potatoes, simmer for 10 minutes and scuff the edges. Add the rosemary sprigs and whole garlic cloves, season with salt and pepper and drizzle over a good lug of olive oil. Tip the potatoes into the tray and place under the lamb to catch all the lovely juices. To make the mint sauce, mix the chopped mint, sugar, salt, hot water and wine vinegar. Cook the lamb for about an hour and 15 minutes if you want it pink, or an hour and a half if you want it more well done. Take it out of the oven and cover with tinfoil and leave for 15 minutes before serving. Carve and serve with the potatoes and mint sauce. Tip: Try putting a few parsnips or carrots in with the roast potatoes.

At The Movies The Hunger games: Christmas Cheer(PG) *** Catching Fire (PG) *** Downtown Festive Delight! Rabble Rouser! By Robert Waldman
This year make it your year to enjoy the holidays in style. Sure to be a hit with both young and old is the dazzling Christmas display put on by the team at Canada Place. Port Metro Vancouver again comes through with the perfect holiday treat. Community spirit is alive and well at the waterfront at Canada Place where the giant Cruise ship terminal has made way for a newly minted North Pole. From Dec. 1 until New Years Eve folks can participate in a wide array of activities. Get greeted by a forest of nicely decorated trees on route to a spacious ice rink where you can skate. Every activity on this site is free with much welcome donations urged to help such worthwhile charities as the Strathcona Community Center food security for children program. People without skates can rent a pair for only $2. A similar $2 donation for a IDE aboard the always popular miniature By Robert Waldman train ride will have the little ones in stitches. Those donations also help out e west coast railway association. Even the big guy himself, old Santa, will be on hand on weekends for photos and to answer letters. Tradition and spirit are in high gear at those in attendance are sure to marvel at the one of a kind Woodwards window displays. Sit back and gaze at the hand crafted animation scenes complete with moveable parts. Highlights include teddy vp ears at ply, Santa's workshop and the candlestick factory. Sports minded people can also try their hand at curling or simply sample the seasonal food treats. Take lots of photos of the beautiful displays including a giant nutcracker. Above all else just come down for the fun. Take sky train to avoid parking hassles and embrace the spirit of giving with a visit to this indoor winter wonderland. Bows are drawn and the fate of civilization seems on the line in The Hunger Games : Catching Fire. Known as the second instalment in another popular books to the big screen juggernaut this EOne Entertainment release will appeal to the hordes who flocked to the original. Fit for all ages check it out at any Cineplex Odeon Theatre across B.C. Poor Katniss Everdeen. Buoyant Jennifer Lawrence, hot off her stunning work in Silver Linings Playbook, looks dressed to kill (and then some) as heroine extraordinaire Katniss. Grudges die hard and the head of this futuristic society, colony ruler President Snow has set in motion a new survival of the fittest tournament that's stacked against our poor girl. Canadian acting ace Donald Sutherland (M*A*S*H) superbly plays this smug, pompous ass who will go all out to "break" his perceived nemesis. By hook and by crook our Wonder Woman must fend off an array of death traps to at least get her to the third movie. Blessed with an all star cast including hammy as ever Stanley Tucci (the Devil Wears Prada) as play by play commentator and MC extraordinaire Caesar Fickerman and James Bond alumnus Jeffrey Wright ( Quantum of Solace) as a high tech wizard Catching Fire is a lot of fun for its 2 1/2 hour duration. Oh, and let's not forget poor Katniss' boy problems as three potential suitors come a calling and go a hunting with her. Back as puppy dog romance characters are Peeta Mellark and Gale Hawthorne well delivered by Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth. Director Francis Lawrence does a good job showing the sinister side of this society where military rule and conspiracies run roughshod over the populace who just want to survive. Back on board this train to salvation are Woody Harrelson as mentor Haymitch Abernathy and a solid debut by Phillip Seymour Hoffman as a gamesman with attitude. Surprises galore and exquisite costuming enhance this epic in the making whose imaginative creativity will leave you yearning for more.

How To Deal With A Mother-InLaw That Drives You Crazy

There are television shows and major motion pictures to deal with this very situation. The truth is that mother-inlaws are annoying enough once you get married but add a baby to the mix and you just might be pushed over the edge. Still, if you give it time and follow a few simple strategies, you can make things at the very least tolerable. Who knows, after a few years, you might just learn to love her. First of all, understand the situation. Chances are you and your mother-inlaw are strong willed. However, try to see things from her perspective. She loves your spouse and her grandchildren, and wants to be involved in their lives. The one thing keeping her from being the matriarch is YOU. So, perhaps a little jealousy on her part is in order. While you shouldnt simply excuse rudeness or being constantly belittled, you dont have to engage in World War III over something that is obviously childish. If you can be the bigger person and swallow more than you chew you will at the very least put karma on your side. Another rule to dealing with your mother-in-law is to set boundaries in the beginning. Far too many people allow or appoint their mother-in-law to be in charge of the children all the time (as a full time babysitter), and then try to pull back those reins anytime they wish. You cant have your cake and eat it too. If you want boundaries that keep your motherin-law in her familial place, then you have to make concessions on your side as well. Set boundaries by being kind and respectful. Dont demand she stay away, but rather make it clear that you are now your own family and that it needs to be respected. If she is stepping into your ground, make sure to hold your spot as well as you can, without crushing feelings or causing resentment. It is okay to want time with your spouse and your children that doesnt involve the in-laws. In fact, that is just healthy. If your mother-in-law doesnt feel the need to call before she pops

in, or she shows up at dinnertime with sweets for the kids just to make you look bad, choose a time to be clear that this wont work for you. However, you also need to ensure that you allow her to be with your family on her terms as well (At least some of the time). Also, understand that if you share EVERYTHING with your mother-inlaw, you are inviting her into your life. Try to keep your marital squabbles and troubles to yourself. It would definitely be nice to have your spouse on your side when it comes to dealing with your mother-in-law. The most dangerous place to stand is between a mother and child, no matter how old the child is. However, if your spouse doesnt see just how manipulative, conniving, belittling, and annoying your mother-in-law is, you may have to handle it yourself. If you feel that you are being disrespected, it is your place as an adult to stand up to it. Instead of confronting your motherin-law, try to talk to her about it in a kind and respectful way. You may find that her actions are just out of fear of losing her place of importance in your spouses life. Make sure you dont place blame and rather speak from a place of how you feel. This may give her a chance to explain herself as well. Last but not least, give the relationship time to develop. It is annoying to have a mother-in-law that seems to know everything better than you do or who makes it a point to notice every mistake you make along the way. And while you may not want to admit it there are probably many times that she is right and can be helpful to you. Chances are she is not going away any time soon, and you have a choice whether to allow her to make you miserable and angry, or just someone that makes you chuckle and gives you great stories to tell your friends. You and her, both mothers and wives loving the same people, may just have more in common than you know, and as the years roll by, it is these similarities that may bring you together. Then again, maybe they wont.

You are the hottest chick in town and your popularity is at its peak in the college. And when that's the situation, you know how easy it is for guys to fall for you. Socceroos stalwart Mark Bresciano will put his spot at next year's World Cup at risk by appealing a four-month suspension for an alleged illegal transfer. FIFA hit Bresciano with the lengthy suspension and a $1.9 million fine last month, after ruling his move from United Arab Emirates side Al Nasr to Qatari club Al Gharafa was not legal. FIFA has yet to put a start date on the ban while allowing Bresciano the opportunity to appeal, but had he accepted it when notified last month he would have served it before the World Cup begins on June 12. By deciding to appeal the ban, however, Bresciano's future is now uncertain with no known timeframe on the appeal process. Should the appeal be finalised just before June and be unsuccessful, Bresciano would be ruled out of playing in the showpiece event in Brazil. Bresciano's lawyers will this week lodge an application for stay with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), which could potentially clear him to

play for Al Gharafa and the Socceroos pending the final hearing. "We're pretty confident; we wouldn't be appealing if we weren't," Bresciano told News Corp Australia. "It's risky whichever way you look at it, but we've discussed it and in our view it's a calculated risk. "It's not ideal, but I also had to think about missing those four months leading into the World Cup. It could've been done but it wasn't ideal preparation either. "But the biggest factor in this decision is that I am innocent. "We'll wait and see what the CAS decides. If they accept the application for [the] stay I can start playing straight away." One of Australia's best players in the final phase of Asian World Cup qualifiers, Bresciano's spot looked assured as a crucial creative midfielder in coach Ange Postecoglou's World Cup squad. Postecoglou, while not wanting to speculate on the outcome of Bresciano's appeal, said he hoped the veteran would be able to play while a decision was made. "It's more of a concern for the player

than it is for me, I'll deal with what lays ahead and obviously hoping that he'll be available for both March and the World Cup," Postecoglou said. "But at the moment it's all a bit unknown.

"I'm not as close to it as he is. His advisors made that decision. "From my perspective the most important thing is the outcome and until we know the outcome there's no point speculating either way."

Digicel Fiji 7s Emosi Mulevoro was voted as the 'fans' favourite' in the Emirates Dubai Sevens. Mulevoros try on a Pio Tuwai back hand delivery during New Zealands 44-0 semi-final demolition won him the award. "First when I saw Pio was coming alongside me when I intercepted the ball, I passed to him, and then he shouted to call me to come around, Mulevoro told IRB com. "Mulevoro said in Fijian to me to run behind him, so I ran around and I knew he would flick the ball back to me. "I didn't expect it to come behind him like it did, I thought he would pass it in front, but I was very happy to see the ball come out of the back like that - it was perfect timing" With eight different try scorers in their semi-final against New Zealand, Gordon Tietjens' biggest-ever defeat on the Series, a number of tries could have been in the nominee list - but scoring

'stellar tries' was something head coach Ben Ryan had said Fiji would do in Dubai. "I think the coach knew some amazing tries would be scored because we have some players with good skills like Pio and some very wise players. We trust each other, so we are always going to score tries like that and hope for more this weekend," added Mulevoro. "Before we came out from the changing room against New Zealand Waisale Serevi was also giving us advice. It was a good memory for us. "To win our first Dubai on the Series was also a great achievement for us, and it will be unforgettable for all of us. We will try our best this weekend to back up what we did." Each of the nine individual round winners will then go into a final vote at the end of the season for an overall 'fans' favourite try' of the season, which was won by Pedro Leal of Portugal last season.

Digicel Fiji 7s emphatic win at the Dubai Sevens in the United Arab Emirates is a thing of the past. These words were uttered by Isimeli Lesi Korobasaga, the coach of the quadruple British Columbia Sevens champions Burnaby Lighthouse. Korobasaga says Fiji needs to leave behind the Dubai 7s win and get focused for the Nelson Mandela Bay Sevens in Port Elizabeth at the weekend. Fiji has a tough task ahead this weekend. The win has them become target of other great teams, he said. New Zealand that got beat to a pulp is probably itching to have another run at our men. A new venue could spring surprises and Fiji must not let the Dubai 7s get into their head. The proven Fijian 7s coach on the lower mainland says while Ben Ryan has sparked the team with his coaching traits, the players must not become complacent but rather take threats seriously. The players need to top off their fitness. They must maintain the same intensity level that had Fiji end their 15 year Dubai dry run and have confidence, said Korobasaga. He said all eyes will be on New Zealand and its coach Gordon Tietjen, who is probably churning inside out following his sides embarrassing 44-0 defeat in the semi-final, a prelude to Fiji's 29-17 title win over South Africa. New Zealand is a proven 7s team. They must not be taken off the radar. Gordon Tietjen is an amazing coach who would inflict harm if were not cautious. Fiji is drawn in pool A with Scotland, Australia and France.
