History of Eurocodes

CC504 DESIGN OF STEEL STRUCTURE

TOPIC 1 INTRODUCTION TO EUROCODES

PSA/JKA/CHIA/CC504

PSA/JKA/CHIA/CC504

Have been in development since mid 1970s. By March 2010 the Eurocodes are mandatory for European public works. Replace the existing national building codes published by national standard bodies (e.g. BS 5950). Each country is expected to issue a National Annex to the Eurocodes which will need referencing for a particular country (e.g. The UK National Annex).

What are the Eurocodes?

Design codes comprising 10 design standards, EN 1990 EN 1999 For the design of buildings and other civil engineering works Produced by the European Committee for Standardization, CEN.

Aims of Structural Design

FUNCTION- Satisfy the clients needs. Must fulfill its intended function SAFETY - possibility of collapse must be remote ECONOMY - economic to construct and maintain AESTHETICS - pleasing appearance

Uncertainty in Structural Design

Action (Loading) Strength of Material Structural behavior - cannot guarantee a structure will be absolutely safe, but only that the risk of failure will be extremely small. This is achieved by introducing safety factors into the design calculations

Actions
Actions acting on the steel strucutre may be divided into : (i) Permanent action (Gk) effect due to gravity such as self load of strucutre member, floor slab, finishing, etc. (ii) Variable action (Qk) effect due to the movement in the building such as people, equipments, movable partitions, traffic, etc. Values adopted based on the observation and measurement and normally less accurate than the assessment of permanent actions. (iii) Wind action

Principles of Limits State Design

There are TWO limit state design in EC3 : 1. Ultimate Limit State
Associated with collapse (yielding, buckling, overturning, etc.) or with other similar forms of structural failure DESIGN ACTION = 1.35Gk + 1.5Qk

2. Serviceability Limit State

Deflection and vibration must be limited to avoid adverse affects to the appearance, impaired use of the structure, discomfort to the occupants and damage to finishes and contents of building. Deflection based on UNFACTORED Qk
