Kreg Joinery - How It Works

Kreg Joinery is an incredibly fast, strong, and simple way of joining wood. It essentially involves drilling a hole at an angle into one workpiece, and then joining it to a second workpiece with self-tapping screws. While it may seem simple, the technique is revolutionary because when youre done assembling, theres no need to leave your joint clamped up for hours, glue is completely optional, and since youre only machining one workpiece there are no frustrating alignment problems to deal with. Kreg Joints are so simple they y can be built in just a few easy steps!
Specialized Drill Bit w/ Stepped Pilot Tip
Drive.
With the pocket-hole drilled, the second step is to connect your workpieces together with Kreg specialized self-tapping screws. Clamping the joint ahead of time ensures that it will stay in place as you drive the screws. Again, there is no need to drill a pilot hole into the second workpiece at all; simply clamp the two pieces together using either the Kreg Face Clamp or Right Angle Clamp, and drive the screws to secure the joint. No complicated alignment and no waiting for the glue to dry!
Drill.
The rst step is to drill pocket-holes in your rst workpiece. A pocket-hole is created with a specialized drill bit that features a stepped pilot tip. The step of the bit creates the at-bottom pocket, which seats the screw, while the tip creates the guide-hole for the screw to follow as its driven into the second workpiece. The at step created by the bit ensures that the screw head seats rmly in the bottom of the hole, resulting in an incredibly strong and tight joint. Each Kreg Jig features lifetime-guaranteed hardened steel drill guides which guide your bit at a precise angle as you drill the pocket-hole. The angle of the pocket-hole is optimized for strength and exibility across a wide range of material thicknesses, and ensures that your screw always exits at the center of the workpiece.

Kreg Screws include many features which make them uniquely suited for use with Kreg Joints:
Case-Hardened Steel: Constructed from industrial strength, case-hardened steel which is designed not to break, even in the hardest woods. The large washer head of these screws is designed to seat rmly in the bottom of the pocket for maximum joint strength. Half-Threaded Shank: This ensures that the threads are primarily in the second workpiece, preventing the threads from working against each other and pushing the joint apart as the screw is driven. Self-Tapping Tip: Eliminates the need to pre-drill holes in the second workpiece. The self-tapping tip of each screw drills its own hole as its driven so the wood does not split even in extremely hard woods such as hickory and oak.
Kreg screws are available in a wide variety of lengths, as well as coarse and ne thread types, depending on the type of wood you are working with. (see more on page 17)

To drill the pocket-hole, simply place the workpiece in the Kreg Jig , clamp it down using the built-in toggle clamp, adjust your depth and drill the hole! For panel joints, you put one hole about every 6-8 inches, for rail/stile joints you put two holes evenly across the joint depending on the width of the workpiece. The Kreg Jig features three uniquely spaced holes so you can nd just the right spacing for your workpiece.

Head Style
Unlike basic dry-wall screws with wedge-shaped heads prone to splitting wood, Kreg Screws feature large at heads designed to seat rmly in the bottom of the Pocket-Hole. This dramatically improves overall joint strength and prevents the wood from splitting. Available in two styles
Thread Style
Kreg screws are available in three different thread styles all featuring a self-tapping tip. This allows the screw to drill its own hole while being driven eliminating the need to machine the second workpiece, and preventing your wood from splitting.
Composition

Our zinc coated screws are recommended for a wide variety of indoor projects where exposure to moisture is not a signicant concern. Blue-Kote screws are the best choice for the majority of indoor and outdoor applications. Blue-Kote screws feature 3 anti-corrosion layers making them perfect for a variety of outdoor environments. Our stainless screws are specially designed for maritime applications, excessive exposure to salt water, and other exceedingly corrosive environments such as ACQ treated lumber.

These Washer Head screws are the recommended screw for the majority of applications. The large head provides maxium surface area on the head of the screw, helping to ensure the strongest joint possible.

Length
The most important part of choosing the right screw for your application is selecting the correct screw length. As a general rule, we suggest using the following screw lengths when joining like material thicknesses, such as 3/4 to 3/4 material. The fully threaded design of most standard screws can actually push the two workpieces apart when being tightened down. The unique design of Kreg Screws eliminates this problem and ensures the joint pulls tightly together.

MITER ATTACHMENT
Our Perfect Miter attachment is designed to support the mitered end of a board so that the sharp point of the miter is not damaged while cutting. The attachment also allows the mitered end to be measured off two points of contact instead of the toe of the miter, creating increased accuracy. A slot is machined into the attachment which enables it to be attached to the Production Stop or Swing Stop with a simple carriage bolt (included).
PRODUCTION STOP
Our Production Stop is built for a rugged shop environment. Dual lens cursors on both sides of the stop allow it to be easily used on either side of the blade without re-conguring. This stop also drops onto both the Top Trak and Heavy Duty Trak from the topside, allowing it to be quickly removed and repositioned without sliding to the edge of the trak section.

C Trak Clamp This inexpensive and versatile clamp works great in a variety of applications. Fits the Mini Trak, Top Trak or HD Trak. You may also mount the clamp to a piece of wood by drilling a 1/4 hole and then countersinking a 7/16 hole for the bolt head. When mounting the clamp on any of the tracks, be sure to have the base of the clamp seated on the track to avoid pulling the track out of the work surface. For most clamping applications, we suggest using two clamps to keep the workpiece from rotating.

Contains four T-slots which accommodate the head of a standard 1/4 hex bolt. A 1/2 recessed indentation runs along the top and frontside of the trak for easy application of a self-adhesive measuring tape (sold separately).
