# Lesson Plan: Pasta Patterns (Preschool) Goal/Rationale: The goal of this lesson is to develop childs knowledge of patterns by having

them create their own patterns out of various types of dried pasta noodles. Patterning is an important skill for children to develop because it helps children develop problem-solving skills using tangible materials, and allows children the opportunity to use their creative thinking skills to create their own pattern. Objectives: Given a small bowl filled with various dried pasta noodles, students will create an ababab or abcabcabc pattern with the noodles. Standards/Benchmarks: (Creative Curriculum): Cognitive development: IILogical thinking, Objective 30: Recognizes patterns and can repeat them. Developmental Prerequisites/Developmental Targets The developmental skills that are necessary for success is some previous experience with patterning, and some observation skills to determine what pattern is being made. Specific area of development that his being targeting: cognitive development, mathematical reasoning

Location/set up/teacher preparation: This activity will take place at one of the group tables. Teacher should assemble 7-10 small bowls filled with dried pasta from sensory table for activity. Instructional Procedures Introduction o Show large notepad of patterns that were created during the previous week. o Say the patterns shown out loud as a group. Teacher stops saying after the first four elements of the pattern, but continues to point to each shape. o Remind students of how the pattern was made and how it repeats o Tell students that they are going to create their own patterns using noodles from the sensory table. Presentation: o Tell students that you will demonstrate what they are going to do. Get down on childrens level at table with pasta bowl. o Have one student pick out a pasta shape from the bowl. This will be the first element in the pattern. o Have a second student pick out another pasta shape from the bowl. This will be the second element. o Set the two pieces next to each other, say you are going to make a pattern with two different shapes. o Pick out a pasta noodle from the bowl that is the same as the first shape and set it down on the table in the pattern line. o Ask students what the next shape should be.

Create the pattern (six shapes laid out) Set behavior expectations for students before passing out bowls Keep your own hands on your own pasta Do not throw the pasta across the table Only the pasta noodles that are being used in the pattern should be out of the bowl When you have created your pattern, raise your hand and wait for a teacher to come talk with you about what youve created. While you are waiting, you can start thinking/making a different pattern. o Pass out pasta bowls to friends that are sitting quietly with their hands in their lap. Discussiontalking individually with students about what they created. o Tell me about the pattern you created. o Effective praise: I can see that you created a pattern using those shapes, and you did a great job using your pasta to create the pattern. Do you think you can make another one with different shapes? o o

Assessment: Informal, observe and take note of childrens success in creating a pattern, note those who struggled or did not create the pattern correctly to work with them individually to be successful. Differentiation: For students who seem to be struggling with the activity, help them start creating a pattern with very obviously different pasta shapes/textures and ask them to finish the pattern independently. If they are still struggling, have them pull out the shapes that are in their pattern from the pasta bowl. For students who have demonstrated they are developmentally ready for tiering, encourage students to create an abcabcabc pattern.

Clean-up/transition: When it is time for the group of students to transition, instruction them to put all of the pasta back in the bowl and bring it up to the teacher before going to the next activity (potty or lunch). Reflection This pasta patterning lesson is not the first lesson that I have taught by myself, but it was the first lesson that I planned and taught by myself. Up until this point, I had only taught the lessons that my CT had planned, and overall I was very happy with how it went. I thought I did a nice job of introducing the lesson and getting student attention, and set behavior expectations that I thought, for the most part, were achieved. If I could go back and do this lesson again, I would be more firm with students who were not following directions or did not do what I asked, and follow through on the consequences that I had stated. I would have also done the transition a little more smoothly from the lesson to the children going to the bathroom or going to lunch, however it is difficult when it is unknown exactly how long getting all of the children through the bathroom is going to take. I also would give students the option to trace their pasta noodles onto a blank sheet of paper as something to help develop

fine motor skills as well as provide another activity to engage students in when they had successfully created their pattern.
