About Metroparks
Metroparks of the Toledo Area is a regional system of premier natural, historical and cultural parklands. A public agency serving Lucas County, Metroparks maintains parks and conservation areas totaling 11,000 acres. The park districts mission is to enhance our quality of life and inspire preservation efforts in this and future generations.
Hours of Operation
All Metroparks open daily, 7 a.m. until dark. Admission: Free. Other hours and fees apply to specic attractions.
Programs
Metroparks programs and activities encompass a wide variety of interests related to the park districts purpose. Programs are open to everyone. Children must be accompanied by adults unless noted as a drop-off program. If you have a disabling condition and would like information and support for accessibility to programs, services, facilities or applying for a job at Metroparks, call 419-407-9701.

Metroparks Trails
Trails in each of the Metroparks offer a variety of distances and experiences, from winding dirt paths through the woods and prairies, to hardsurface all-purpose trails suitable for bicycling and skating. Oak Openings Preserve also has horse trails.

NEW! Teen Camp (Ages 13 to 16) Nature Camp graduates asked, and Metroparks could not say no teen camp is back for 2014, and better than ever! Participants spend the week taking an in-depth look at the unique habitats of Metroparks, learning about the important roles of keystone species and developing teamwork and leadership skills. Pack a lunch and reusable water bottle. Fee covers all other equipment, eld trip transportation, one snack per day and a t-shirt. Fee: $140 ($112 Metroparks Members) Reservations Monday to Friday, June 23 - 27, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Side Cut Metropark, Lamb Center NEW! Art Camp (Ages 8 to 14) Nature is the greatest artist of all. At this special camp, use natural materials and nature as inspiration to create your own works of art. Campers appreciation and understanding of nature is sure to evolve during a week exploring arts connection to the environment. Each day features a new theme making this a great experience for children who enjoy art, nature, history and the outdoors. Wildwood Preserve is home-base with exciting trips planned to Secor Metropark and more. Bring your own lunch and water bottle. Equipment, supplies and eld trip transportation are provided. Camp Expedition (Adults) Ever feel a little jealous when sending the little one off to Nature Camp? Not this summer go on your very own adventure at Camp Expedition. Spend the week learning some fundamentals of environmental science, and explore Metroparks like never before. Camp specically focuses on the ecology of the Oak Openings Region. Adults from all educational backgrounds are welcome. Pack a lunch and reusable water bottle. Fee covers equipment and a t-shirt. Different parks each day. NEW! Family Camp: Fun the Whole Family Finally, the whole family can enjoy the Nature Camp experience together. Family Camp days are jam-packed with the perfect mix of educational and recreational activities. Campers spend time with both the family and other campers of similar age. Stay late on Wednesday for an evening around the campre and lots of nighttime fun. Fee covers all other equipment, one snack per day and a t-shirt. Please register all participants. Campers must be at least ve years old. Overnight Camp: Fun For Everyone For the busiest beavers out there, Metroparks crammed a whole lot of Nature Camp fun into an overnight expedition. Take a weekend getaway to the new White Oak campground located in beautiful Oak Openings Preserve. Metroparks naturalists lead canoeing, geocaching, hiking, ghost stories, smores and much more. Come alone, with a sweetheart or the whole family! Maximum 32 people, 8 tents, individuals under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Overnight Camp begins at 4 pm on Saturday and ends at noon on Sunday. Camp takes place at the White Oak camping area of Oak Openings Preserve. Saturday dinner and Sunday continental breakfast provided. Bring a tent, equipment and sleeping bag (Limited camping equipment available to borrow). Please register all participants. Spend an afternoon with Maumee Valley Adventurers each week in January, February and March at Wildwood Preserve or Oak Openings Preserve. Hike or ski at 1 p.m., weather permitting. Local Historical Conference Opportunities for networking will leave participants with ideas to engage, educate, empower and take your organization to the next level. Wee Workshop (Ages 3 to 5) Wee Workshop is a handson nature experience designed to cultivate childrens love for the outdoors and includes a craft, story time and a nature walk. Register child only. In this new program series, teens will learn the basics of keeping a nature journal. This rst installment focuses on observing trees. Participants will explore nature photographer Ian Adams exhibit, Trees: A Photographic Celebration, and then venture outside to observe and sketch the beauty of Secor Metroparks trees in the winter. The Owl & The Woodpecker, photographed by Paul Bannick Award-winning photographer, environmental conservationist and author Paul Bannick uses stunning large format photographs to examine the intertwined life histories of owls and woodpeckers and the unique role they have played in dening and enriching their often-threatened habitats. Trees: A Photographic Celebration by Ian Adams Ohio photographer and author Ian Adams is featured with an exhibit from his latest book, Trees: A Photographic Celebration, that takes viewers through the seasons and pairs his | 14 | unique photos with favorite poems and quotations about trees. A View From The Light: Nature Photography by Maggi Dandar Maggi Dandar captures the beauty of light through her award winning, evocative photos. A favorite participant in the NCNPs annual Celebrating Nature through Photography Contests, Maggi was invited to exhibit a selection of her favorite images. The Nature Photography Center will close starting in March for several months while the building and surrounding grounds undergo a major transformation. Stay tuned for more details.

Classes
Introduction To Taking Great Nature Photos Start with the basics of photography and, in four indoor sessions, work through such topics as making proper exposures, selecting the right lens, compositions, and developing your own style. Taught by Nature Photo Center director Art Weber. First class session concentrates on basic camera operation and elements of proper exposure. Second session: More basics, metering, proper lens selection. Third session: Composition. Fourth: Summary and review, special topics. Nature Shoot: Reptiles This unique session includes a behind the scenes opportunity to photograph species in the Toledo Zoos renowned Reptile House. The program is led by Andrew Odum, the zoos curator of reptiles, as well as an exceptional photographer. Nature Shoot: Birds Of Prey This popular annual program combines tips on taking great wildlife photos with an opportunity to photograph magnicent birds of prey. Metroparks U, a new service learning venture for youth ages 13 to 18, will host work projects and leadership training this winter. All teens who have not yet graduated high school are invited to volunteer and attend. Presentation dates (January 18, February 15 and March 15) include a selection of presentations in leadership, environmental or historical education and are offered at no cost to participants. Counselors In Training
Metroparks is seeking teens ages 14 to 18 with exceptional interests in nature, the environment and youth education to serve as Counselors in Training (C.I.T.s) for 2014 Metroparks Summer Camps. C.I.T.s work with camp counselors teaching campers, playing games, making crafts, fishing, canoeing, swimming and more! This is an excellent opportunity for leadership development, service hours and experience in outdoor education! Informational meetings will be held Tuesday, February 25 and Saturday, March 1. Volunteer Roving Interpreter Orientation Volunteer Roving Interpreter program has begun at Wildwood Preserve Metropark. What is Roving Interpretation? It is the delivery of unique knowledge to park visitors in an informal park setting. The information delivered should demonstrate the educational value of Metroparks and inspire the park visitors connection to preservation, nature and history. Our knowledgeable staff will guide your learning of how to do this. Participating volunteers will be asked to serve as a Roving Interpreter at least 25 hours per year and attend required trainings. Raptor Research Project Raptors are very important indicators of ecosystem health. Attend this exciting 2014 season kickoff meeting to learn about ways to help with the longterm efforts of monitoring breeding raptors in the Oak Openings Region of northwest Ohio. Volunteer Naturalist, Steve Lauer, highlights research ndings, as well as species information and identication techniques. This meeting is strongly recommended for new volunteers interested in taking part in the study, as well as current volunteers that would like a review of the information. New volunteers who wish to participate are asked to attend this meeting and/or the eld training session in March, submit or have on le a current Metroparks Volunteer application, and sign up for at least three raptor bioblitz days in March, April and/or May. Current volunteers are not required to attend a training, but will be asked to sign up for at least three raptor bioblitz days.
